Getting bullied out of my own business by majority shareholders - what to do?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:13 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I started a ecommerce (self fulfillment) business 4 years ago with a friend. We sold 20% shares to his father which put them at 60% total ownership together and me 40%. Things went well for 4 years until I went fulltime with the business last year. The two of us are both directors of the company. His father is just a shareholder.

Since going full-time, I have been constantly bullied by the other two shareholders because they say I'm not deserving my wage, doing enough etc when they don't even see all the work I do everyday. I wrote a massive list of all my responsibilities and they decided at the end because I was taking 65% of the profits to pay my wages, they weren't happy with this and want to go back to the two of us working for free during nights, weekends etc.

Now they have decided together they want to close the business down and sell everything up and cash out. I feel helpless because I've put in ~90% of the work over the last 4 years and I don't have the majority of shares to go against them.

I asked to buy their shares out over time but they said they will only accept instant payment, and wanted an inflated sale price for their shares (more money than they would make if liquidated).

I really want to continue to run this business but don't know what to do. If we close down the business, I'll lose our customer base and everything I've worked for.

High Impact Tools and Daily Habits That You Cannot Live Without. Looking for Productivity, Sales, Digital Sec, Health, and more.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 05:41 AM PDT

Fellow founders and entrepreneurs from r/Entrepreneur what are some of the tools and daily habits in your stack that have the most impact on your professional/personal life?

I'll explain. Like some of you I work in the early stage space where time is a scarce and valuable commodity. Time, of course, if not managed correctly will often bring along a wide array of consequences that most of us had to face at some point or another. (stress, fatigue, unhappy clients, total chaos, etc.)

Finding ways to streamline complexity whilst increasing efficacy as human operator is in fact mission critical to juggle work/life balance. (IMO).

That said, these are some of the tools and daily habits that I can't live without:

    Collective - collective.com

    • I love being a freelancer but I hate some of the complexity that comes along with it (taxes, accounting, co. formation, etc.) Collective handles all of that for me.

    Aura - aura.com

    • Had my bank account hacked and identity stolen whilst traveling through the EU last year and it wasn't fun (to say the least). Started using Aura for all things digital sec. and haven't looked back since.

    Obsidian - obsidian.md

    • My new addiction for all things documentation. I was a Notion fanboy for a good while but it seems that the product hasn't made much progress recently when compared to Roam, Obsidian, etc. What do you guys think?

    Rise Science - risescience.com

    • Sleep is probably one of the most important aspects of our life that we tend to completely ignore. (Guilty of this myself). This tool helped stabilize my circadian cycle.

    Phantombuster - phantombuster.com

    • For me, automation is the name of the game. I often use PB to streamline time consuming growth/guerrilla marketing workflows.

    SuperHuman - superhuman.com

    • Great if, like me you also spend most of your days doing email related work. Superhuman removed the need to use 3 or 4 email productivity tools stacked up as it bundles all my must haves (tracks opens, auto responders, canned responses, etc.)

    Fastic - fastic.com

    • Nothing matches internment fasting as a productivity boost. Obviously you don't need an app to fast, but I like to gamify it with a couple of buddies.

    Coursera - coursera.org

    • The quality and diversity of the of the courses available on Coursera is mind blowing. I signed up up a few years ago to spruce up on my Portuguese and ended up taking an additional 2 courses on AI and Game theory. Still spending at least a couple hours every week on it and have taken several other courses since.

    Calm - calm.com

    • I don't know where I would be without daily meditation. Apart from the clarity and mindfulness that it provides, what excites me the most about mediation apps is their network effect . Get all your close ones meditating for a month and see how massively it improves the quality of your relationships.

    Daily habits:

    Dynamic Stretching

    • This could be yoga, foam-rolling, or any other type of myofascial release. If you're spending more than 3h/'day working in front of a screen you should be working on your posture and structural integrity. Trust me, you don't wanna have to deal with hyperkyphosis 10y from now.

    Journaling

    • Writing stuff down on a gratitude journal just ain't for me. I prefer to do a quick 2-4m audio recording session at the end of the day of me just doing a quick post-mortem. The exercise of daily reflection is so underappreciated. Avidly recommend it.

    Pomodoro

    • I cycle my Pomodoro's in a way that allows me to sustain a good amount of highly productive brain cycles per day. For me that means 45m on/15m off X 3 followed by a 30m-60m break. I do this cycle 3-4 times a day.

Your turn. What are some of the daily habits and tools that you can't live without?

Are there ANY entrepreneur vloggers worth following?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:17 AM PDT

I just find it entertaining, motivating and inspiring to watch these guys show snippets of their lives and maybe throw in a few tips or lessons here and there.

And when I mean worth following I mostly mean they aren't full of shit with a fake lifestyle or trying to shove products down your throat. There's gotta be some people out there who genuinely just want to Vlog portions of their life?

For those of you who've ran afoul of your investors or business partners, what were some (non-violent) things they did to screw you over?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 07:57 AM PDT

I've heard some pretty dark tales of deals gone awry, that's been one of the main reasons why I've avoided taking money from outsiders in the past. One including a nightclub owner who fell out with his backers. His investors began sending under age kids to his clubs, paying the security staff to let them in. Eventually his license was revoked which left him in a world of debt. I've heard of another where people were paid to follow a guy and his family round for months to the point he had a nervous breakdown, through 24/7 gaslighting by a group of PIs who'd keep appearing outside his offices and at restaurants where he ate. The kind of tricks that the super wealthy can get up to are pretty crazy without resorting to violence or threats. Just wondered if anyone here had stumbled down that unfortunate path before, would be great to hear your stories.

How do you use google search/scripts to find web pages with specific content/ads that may not be listed on social media?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 12:52 PM PDT

I'm specifically thinking in targeting employment ads that may include keywords such as "Portuguese content writer". Many times small companies may advertise such openings in their career pages and they're not appearing anywhere else, not on LinkedIn nor in any agency page. Would be great to find this kind of opportunities more efficiently, so if you know of a way please do let me know :)

    Thanks guys.

tip: if a company charges you ridiculously high prices, they probably dont actually offer that product/service or they dont want to work with you

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 09:00 PM PDT

    ive seen this happen before:

company charges a super high price for a product or service hoping you'd decline because they dont really offer that product or service or they dont want to work with you for whatever reason. but maybe you accept their fees and proceed

after you agree, guess what? they drop you cold. they ghosted you. they never wanted to work with you (possibly because they do not actually offer it) but merely quoted you to move the convo along and hope you decline, not them decline. thats their goal. but they ended up declining. they ghosted you, they look bad, they were not serious

i was contacting a chinese manufacturer for pet supplies 100 custom pet leashes for $900, or 1 sample leash for $100 (ridiculous rip off)

i took 1 sample for $100. i know its a rip off, but i need samples. samples are key

i tell them i agree to 1 for 100. emailed them multiple times. got ghosted. they simply never had that "deal" in the first place; it was just a convo mover

Should I get my own personal lawyer when setting up a partnership?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 02:09 PM PDT

Long story short - I work on a farm and I've done some home winemaking there. I've been looking into starting a small commercial winery (~1000 cases/year) and my current boss (who's a Silicon Valley type investor that owns the farm) seems on board with the idea and likes what I've come up with so far. I also know another lawyer that may invest as well and possibly be a partner and would be a good resource for the company.

I know winemaking, and I'm pretty confident I can pull off the operations part. But I have 0 experience on the business side, and I know with alcohol in particular the business/licensing/legalities/finances can be complicated. I'm also not really sure if me and my boss are on the same page when it comes to "I want to start this new business with his support, maybe partnership" vs "he should start this new business with me playing some role but probably not owner" and I honestly don't know which option is best for me in the long run either. I definitely want this to be my thing and I've done (and probably will do) all the work, and will have a different location and name. But I also know both of their partnership would be valuable both for running things and financing.

So my question is, should I get my own personal lawyer (outside of the business's legal needs) when it comes to actually setting up the LLC and making any kind of formal arrangements to protect my own personal interests, and if so, when? I know both of these people pretty well and don't think they'd be out to screw me or anything, but I also have no idea what I'm doing on that side of things and life has made me cynical and suspicious. Right now I'm operating off my own research, but I feel like I need someone in my corner who's on a more level playing field with my more business-savvy potential partners.

What Are Your Guiding Principles As An Entrepreneur? Have You Established Any To Follow?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:02 AM PDT

A lot of posts here in this sub deal with burnout, anxiety, frustration. Starting and building something, as is commonly known, can be overwhelmingly frustrating at times.

Living by a set of principles can help mitigate the frustrations and anxieties that will (not if) come from time to time.

What are yours? It would be interesting to compile a community-derived list for entrepreneurs...

I came across a random youtube video reciting 24 principles the old Norse Vikings would recite. Some have clear applications to entrepreneurship (These are from old Norse Poems to give some context):

    1. Be A Person Of Worldly Intelligence If You Desire To Sit With Kings. The Man Who Only Carries The Limited Scope Of His Village Will Be A Laughing Stock.
    2. Travel Far And Wide And You Shall Posses The Secrets Of Man.
    3. When Fear Leads The Way The Destination Is Never Glorious.
    4. As One Candle Can Light Another, So Too Can Greatness Of Mind Be Transferred Amongst Men. To Remain In Solitude Is To Deprive Oneself Of This Kindling.
    5. Take Care With Your Speech; It Can Be The Catalyst For Many Needless Problems. You Never Know Who Could Be Lending An Ear To Your Ramblings.
    6. If You Desire To Claim A Place In The World, Arise Early. The Slothful Wolf Starves And The Sleeping Man Rarely Sees Victory.
    7. Understand A Storm Can Change Its Course Without Warning. Always Be Prepared To Brave A Storm.
    8. Defeat Your Enemies In The Fields Before They Reach Your House.
    9. No Matter How Cautiously You Live There Is No Escaping The Fatal Clutches Of Old Age. So Then, Better To Join The Fray And Fight Proudly For Something Worth Obtaining.
    10. A Good Friend Speaks Truly And From The Heart, The One Whose Speech Is Always Pleasant Cannot Be Trusted.
    11. What Will Be Etched Into History About Your Life? What Legend Will Be Left Long After You're Gone. How Have You Made This World Better? --- Ponder These Questions Daily.
    12. There Is Always A Sage Wiser And Warrior Bolder Than Yourself. Be Careful Not To Become Too Comfortable.
    13. Boastful Thinking And Exclamations Of One's Brilliance Attracts Misfortune Into One's Life. Live Humbly, With Quiet Confidence And Troubles Will Rarely Beset You.
    14. Enemies Often Lurk In The Shadows Around Corners, It Would Be Wise To Check Them Before Venturing Further On Your Path.
    15. Moderate Yourself Ruthlessly, Allowing Greed To Consume You Will Bring Nothing But Sorrow.
    16. The Critical Man Is Quick To Point The Finger And Causes Much Dismay Amongst Others. He Is Unknowing That He Too Shares In Their Faults.
    17. Lying Awake In The Night Battling With Ill Thoughts Offers No Solutions. You Rise Unrested And In No Better Position Than Before.
    18. No Matter If Your Dwelling Is A Fragile Shack Of Sticks And Mud It Is Valuable To Have A Home. Nothing Crushes A Man's Spirit More Than Having To Beg.
    19. Joyous Is He Who Shares In His Riches. The Coward Hoards And Lives In Fear, Rarely Delighting In The Fortune That Seldom Comes His Way.
    20. Do Not Be Ashamed Of Having Simple Clothing, Pay More Attention To Your Hygiene And Demeanor.
    21. Do Not Be Fooled By Money, It Makes The Most Unreliable Friend.
    22. Give Praise For Each Day Regardless Of What Fate Brings.
    23. When The Winds Are Harsh One Should Chop Wood, In Fair Weather Row Out To Sea, In The Romantic Glow Of Candlelight Talk With A Woman. Use A Ship For Travel, A Shield For Defense, And A Sword For Striking. Everything Has Its Time And Place.
    24. Common Sense Is Your Best Friend.

Go 100% business or join yet another 9-5 with somewhat more money?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 10:13 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I have no idea who to turn to and randomly thought I might get some wisdom.

I'll be leaving my current 9-5 job which pays me like 1500$ a month just cause it isn't enough to sustain my current life… marriage, a 3 yo and an upcoming newborn in a month or so.

My business which I ran for the past few years had its ups and downs but as I negotiate a new 9-5 job I found which pays a lot, like 3500$ a month…. All of a sudden my business started to show great signs.

I'm doing media marketing and business services and I had the best month in years… I get excellent leads from ads, the leads are interested in my services…

And no I have like a week to decide on if I join this new 9-5 job which will 100% make me lost customers that need me through the day.

My new job will take most of the most important hours of each day, from 9am to 5pm…. With zero ability to do anything business related.

I closed 2 big customers which will pay pay monthly but will probably leave me since I'll just have to be disconnected from my business as the new boss demands it.

This is a very weird time…. Covid is still weird out here, my wife is 8month prignent and passing this new job is a risk for sure.

My previous job btw did kinda allow me to do stuff for my business here and there… but that's to be over with in the new 9-5 as they are super strict.

Any advises on how to make the right choice?

Edit: didn't tell you my business's income. So it's about 3000$ a month on a good month. Bad month back then was like 500$.

Selling a Shopify store, how to value it?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 05:10 AM PDT

I'm speaking to someone who's interested in buying my Shopify store (tea-related and self-fulfilled).

It has done a modest £3.5k of revenue over the last year, 220 email subs, 1,650 IG followers. I've built quite a unique brand, really good creative assets (product photography, product IP), data based on FB ads tests (all sunk costs). It's in really good shape for someone to pick it up and run with it to give it the love it deserves.

I'm selling as I'm just not spending time on it at all due to other priorities.

How would you go about valuing the business? It also has £1k of stock (at cost price)

Feeling of wasting time when not working

    Posted: 04 Sep 2021 04:08 PM PDT

So pretty much every second that I don't spend working on my business feels like a waste of time. The rational part of my brain understands that working 24/7 is not sustainable, but yet it's weighing somewhat heavy on me. I feel like I have to squeeze as much out of the day as possible. I sometimes don't even feel like I deserve to be doing something "fun" and feel guilty when I'm not spending all my hours working. How do you guys deal with this?

More and more people are thinking about becoming entrepreneurs, but it's clearly not for everyone.

Can these qualities be developed over time? Or is it necessary to already have these qualities in you before you start?

Historical Merchandise Site - Need Feedback

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 08:56 AM PDT

    The Past Amassed

    https://thepastamassed.com/

Idea: I have created a site where I create merch items that feature old; Photo's, Prints, Paintings, advertisements, and documents. 99% of this material is so old that it is in the public domain so I don't have to worry about that, and my sources, my massive book collection and the Library of Congress, are so large that I will never run out of designs. I am going to utilize Print on Demand drop shippers in the beginning and will eventually move to a bulk buy system for popular items.

I also plan to offer a design service for decorators and businesses. Many of these items would be perfect for decorating different restaurants and businesses and I can work with their decorators to get designs that match their vision and give them a bulk rate.

Market: Fans of history, Decorators, Schools, Restaurants/Businesses.

Problem: My main problem is I have never created a website before and I really need some feedback. If anyone could please check out what I have so far and give me feedback that would be greatly appreciated.

I am working on the tags, SEO, and advertising but I have to teach myself all this as I go so it's a work in process.

I've decided I want to start an online shop! Help?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 07:07 AM PDT

Ok! So a bit of back story, I'm a filmmaker. Studied it and have had numerous internships etc... And I finally got a really good job ,but it's only for the next month and a half. But!!! I'll be getting paid a relatively significant amount, way about 20-30k for my month and a bit of work. Epic!

I have an investment account and I generally out money in there in case I decide to uproot my life and vanish lol ,not really. But I have a bit saved up too. But my personal flaw is that I unknowingly spend too much money... Like I'll go out and buy a new pair of shoes or an ice cream and before I know it I'm back to being broke. So! I've wanted to start an online shop for a while and I think this would be the perfect opportunity to finally try.

I'm based in South Africa and I love new stationary, like adore notebooks and pens etc... So I thought I could start an online stationary store for cute but practical stationary. Stuff that would be more popular in South Korea and Japan compared to SA cause through tiktok I've come to realize there are a lot of Anime fans and k-drama fans on this side too.

My second idea was to start an electronics shop, but just sell Xiaomi products, I love the phones and the quality for money as well as how the camera's are probably the best ever created . So I though I could also maybe launch that too?

But yeah, please advise how I can move forward with this.

Here's what I know : 1. I need to go and find suppliers that sell the specific stuff I want 2. Figure out how payment will work i.e. PayPal or whatever else 3. Figure out how to ship to different people 4. Establish a website, get a domain name 5. Start selling and do quality checks

Fiverr client wants me to make a telegram bot to sell cannabis, IDK what to do?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2021 05:08 AM PDT

So I'm new to Fiverr and desperately in need of rating and money, I got this message from a person referencing on of my gigs that he wanted a telegram bot done for selling his products, I was really excited about getting a client until I asked him about the products he is going to sell, they were cannabis and some thc products. As far as I know, recreational use of cannabis is illegal in UK(his country), it's illegal in mine too(India).

Although my services are just making a sort of a shop in which user will get a choice, they will select a product and buy it. There is nothing illegal in what I am doing, but I'm still scared on what to do. I don't want my first income to be something illegal, but on the other hand I don't want to let my first client go, I really need the reviews(and the money!).

Edit: He says he was joking about cannabis, he is going to sell CBD which is legal in the UK.
