Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:29 AM PDT I received my first check and wanted to share! I have been working on a data startup (ProspectDock) part-time in college and just received my first $2000 check as part of a $4000 invoice from customer #1. What started out as a spur-of-the-moment decision to spend a few weekends playing around with a side project has finally turned into an LLC with enough revenue to cover my fixed costs (and time). All in, I've spent ~50 hours from ideation to product design to receiving the first check from a customer. Excited to finally join the community [link] [comments] |
I make $100K+ ARR from my microstartups - AMA Posted: 16 Sep 2021 06:12 PM PDT 👋 Hello everyone, I'm Hari, and I'm a serial Microstartup Maker. In the last 4 years, I made • ✈️ Visa List, an all-in-one visa requirements website for travelers with 300K Monthly Active users • 📁 AnExplorer, an all-one File manager for phones, watches, TV's and tablets on android with crossed 1M downloads recently • 💱 ACrypto, a cryptocurrency app to track and get real-time alerts with 200K downloads • 🖥️ Simple Ops, performance, web vitals and API monitoring tool for websites with 2000 users I started my indie maker journey to become financially independent and travel the world. I had a simple and small goal, build things I wanna use and make $100/day. It started slow, I had started building and improving while traveling, it took a while but I crossed $100, then I crossed $200/day. Then pandemic hit and I went back to $100/day, but after 6 months and building a new microstartup, it slowly picked pace and again crossed $200/day then I crossed $300/day, now I'm close to $400/day and my next goal is $500/day. If the momentum keeps up, I will hit $150K this year. AMA! 😊 And if you wanna know the learning that I share, follow my journey on Twitter [link] [comments] |

Spending $100k for top university to meet people as business owner? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 11:41 AM PDT Hello, In my senior year of HS I started doing marketing for a friend's dad's restaurant. Luckily since I went to a private HS and a lot of families owned businesses, I picked up more jobs. Before I knew it, I was making right under $20k/mo my first week of college. I dropped out a few weeks later. I'm now 21, doing very well, and am starting to work on other projects. My business partner is a columbia grad and all my closest friends go to top universities. They've all said that going to "prestigious" college to solely meet people and network would greatly benefit my life. If I start next fall I'll be 22 and graduate 26. I'm not sure what to do? I have legacy at USC, UCLA, NYU, and UPenn - I did good in school so I'd get in likely no problem, especially if I spend a year at community college and transfer. Not sure if I'd get into UPenn though. Goal would be NYU or USC. I'd pay cash for my education so no student loans - total cost would likely be $75k - $100k. Is it worth it? Long term I want to angel invest/VC. I would solely go to college to meet people and probably study computer science. If anybody could give me input that would be greatly appreciated! What websites do you use that you wish were better? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 11:35 AM PDT Just curious. As a software engineer, I'm interested in websites that have a solid idea, but are lacking in execution. [link] [comments] |
Do these agile retrospectives help improve results? Has anyone tried this with design? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 04:08 AM PDT Hi everyone. I'm the co-founder of small design business and take care of the creative part of the work. My partner is a fan of productivity, and he always looks for ways to improve our work. And it's understandable since he's responsible for client management and everything related to numbers, marketing, and contracts, and he constantly monitors his work to make it more proficient. But now, he insists on integrating the agile approach into my workflow. He heard about agile retrospectives at some management seminar and now requires strict monitoring of the entire creation process and constant analysis of all the shortcomings and improvement of work. To be honest, I have significant doubts that this approach is suitable for designers. All the same, my subordinates are creative people who have big problems with discipline, and much of their work depends on inspiration and mood. When I asked them to comply with shorter deadlines, I received disappointed customers and even more disgruntled employees. And since then, each of my designers is setting his own deadline for the task; I just make sure that they aren't overstretching it and the client is satisfied. I tried to explain to my partner that it's almost impossible to plan the inspiration, but he only sent me a few links on implementing agile in design. He wants me to schedule a retrospective for the ongoing projects to see what can be done better. And although I like to plan the process using an online planner and their colored cards, I have no idea how to improve productivity. Moreover, I have no idea what to discuss at retrospectives if the client is already happy and the project counts as successful. And looking at our work, I can say that we already use an agile approach because the client always takes part in the work. I'd be grateful if you could share any experience concerning the agile method in the creativity area. [link] [comments] |
Does looking for a job is considered as failure for an entrepreneur? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 09:14 AM PDT I have been trying for many years to have any successful business and despite all the efforts nothing is working, and I'm really broke and the idea of looking for a job is a failure to me. I feel like I have failed as an entrepreneur. I remember a quote from rich and poor dad book, it said once you accept being an employee, you have given up the entrepreneur mindset. Any thoughts? I'm really down and since 2015 I had 4 s massive unsuccessful businesses each consumed an intense time, money and effort and failed for a different reason. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:14 PM PDT Hey everyone. I'm UK based and have what I think is quite a good business idea. It's not original, there are a few others across the country doing what a similar thing to what I want to do and I can see they're successful, many have even expanded during Covid. However, no one in my part of the country is doing it and I can see a gap in the market. However, I have no capital or assets and have no idea how I could get it off the ground. I would need about £25,000 for premises and the items I would need to get going. How can I do this? I can see the returns and margins could potentially be good with low running costs, but the initial cash injection is all it needs. Don't think banks would loan to me due to have two young children and nothing to offer as collateral (rent my house). Apologies if this is a common question. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Post your link/idea and I'll create a free video Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:12 AM PDT AI-Generated Human Videos When we carried out this exercise in our private founder's group, the results were overwhelmingly positive. So here we are, trying it at scale to add value to this super helpful community. Producing compelling videos is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. We have seen founders, marketers, and product/communication teams struggle to work with freelancers, digital agencies, professional actors, and voice-over artists. It just costs so much $$$ and time. Furthermore, as the product evolves, the inability to update & incorporate changes adds much more frustration. We are trying to address these pain points by offering free videos (at scale, thanks to our AI buddy). Just share your requirements in the comments below, and I'll get back to you with a video. P.S.: The more requirement context you provide, the better video we can create for you!
Video types you can request: - Explainer Videos - Product Demos/Walkthroughs - Sales Outreach - Customer Support: How-tos & tutorials - E-Learning & Training Modules - Customer Success: Onboarding Videos - HR & Internal Communication
If you'd like to see what kinds of videos you can expect, feel free to check out a sample video on AutoVid.ai ( AI-Generated Human Videos ) Disclaimer: I'm a co-founder [link] [comments] |
Is there a Hacker News for entrepreneurs/business folk? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:10 PM PDT So I've noticed that this subreddit and a few others like it only want discussions and don't want their sub to become nothing but people posting their latest offerings and/or blog posts. But the thing is, I kind of want a place like hacker news or /r/programming that mostly just contains the cool blog posts around this topic. I've learnt so much in tech from reading all those blog posts and it's a really easy way to keep on top of major things. And since I really need to learn a whole bunch about startups and what not, seems like a place like that would be useful. So my question is, is there such a place? If so where? [link] [comments] |
Getting a resale certificate in TN? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 02:07 PM PDT I am getting setup with wholesale accounts and I need a resale certificate. What do I need to get one? Business license, city and county? Anything else? This is just a small side hustle for now, should I go sole P or LLC? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Sep 2021 01:58 PM PDT I have read that most profitable farming in terms of plants, is done in greenhouses. I'm curious if you guys have any input on what kinds of plants I could grow that are profitable in NS, Canada or if you even think it's possible to turn a profit with this low of start-up capital. Posted: 17 Sep 2021 01:50 PM PDT Hi all Finally, we're ready to launch a video discussion chat App for IOS users, what is the best way to acquire the first 100 users to try it? We are quite confident that once we get the first few users to try it, the snowball effect may occur after. Brief about the app: it's an app that can allow you to create a room, add other broadcasters, and start sharing ideas in a more organized way giving each broadcaster time to talk and share his opinion. We are a start-up outside us, and our focus is to get US users first to try it first. We are not willing to do any paid ads at the moment, we only want an organic approach to getting users in. Is there any marketing approach we can try to get in front of our potential users? Appreciate any insight [link] [comments] |
Potentially entering into a partnership. How do I negotiate for what I want? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 01:49 PM PDT Hi everyone. :) Without doxxing myself, I own a company that operates in a niche area of a wider industry. In this niche there are maybe 4-5 companies in the entire country and most of them are sort of antiquated and not interested in scaling at all. It happens that my niche is exploding in popularity and is part of a wider industry in which larger players are starting to take notice of this same niche as potentially being more profitable than the more generalized services they have focused on until now. I have been looking for a larger company with a bigger budget in my industry with which to partner up in a new venture for a while. I've been pounding the pavement, making calls, networking, etc. and it seems to have finally paid off. After months of searching I was able to find one that "gets" what I am doing and has the money and enthusiasm to start a joint venture. They had actually independently tried to break into my market on their own but it's very involved with lots of esoteric laws and procedures to learn so for them it was slow-going. Me coming to them now was really good timing. Our partnership seems equal to me in terms of what we bring to the table. I bring the knowledge of the niche (which maybe less than 10 people in the U.S. are qualified to do, me being one of them), the expertise to provide flawless and quick services, a ready-made and well-oiled team to carry projects to execution of any size. Additionally, I have extensive contacts and have been in my niche for 15+ years. Without me it would be difficult for them to break into this market quickly. In turn, the larger company has the marketing team, industry-at-large contacts, government contacts, and the budget to really scale my (our) business into something big which I lack. The problem is I have never partnered before. I don't really know what I want. Here are some options:
Am I missing anything? Have any of you partnered up with another company/person/firm? If so, how did you divide profits/expenses/responsibilities? Just looking for ideas. [link] [comments] |
Open a secondary business who can run without me Posted: 17 Sep 2021 01:42 PM PDT My first business make around 15 000$ profit on average per month and soon I think I can reach 25 000$. I though of a massage parlor but there are few cons : The thing is that if the business is sucessfull I think the massage parlor can make between 2 000 and 6 000$ without me. I'm asking myself if it's worth taking the risk to sign for 1 year of rent ( it's the minimum in my country most of the time they even ask 3 years ) and start this business. Or should I just focus on developing my first business. It's my first post on reddit and I'm not an english native, [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Sep 2021 01:27 PM PDT Hey guys, I wanted to see if the idea of a hard hat cooling fan was interesting enough that you would actually buy it for work (for outside worker ofc). It would cool your head and neck down using a cooling fan attached to the hard hat. All OSHA requirement would be respected also. Any feedback would be really appreciated. Also, if you guys have some improvement, I would gladly take them. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 17 Sep 2021 08:03 AM PDT After thinking for more than 1 month. I have finally bought a domain and started Finance website. I seriously don't know is this even considered as business. When is it time to call it quits? Posted: 17 Sep 2021 11:46 AM PDT So quick backstory. I'm 21, started a side hustle as a freshman. I have since expanded and tried to provide complementary services but nothing really seems to take off. I don't know if I keep reaching out the wrong audience, too small an audience or whether my marketing is inefficient or do I just need to grow on SM and find clients that way? Do I keep trying and work more on this business? When do you know your venture has failed and it's time to close shop? ETA: I make and sell personalised calligraphy products and have recently started teaching calligraphy as well. [link] [comments] |
Starting out as a Cashew Nut supplier - 1st business. Looking for advice or mentoring. Posted: 17 Sep 2021 07:47 AM PDT Hi all, I've (26M) been lurking on this subreddit for quite sometime and have officially taken the plunge with my 55 year old father to try our hand in the Nuts wholesale business. My father had spent the last 3 years in building contacts and have our first shipment on the way to US. I'm currently working in sales for my 9-5 job and want to use my skills to find possible buyers for my wholesale cashew nuts. This is where I'm facing some difficulties, I've signed up for Tradewheel etc to help find some buyers but we have had little luck so far. I've been scouring online trying to contact buyers who I find on google and found little luck. Does anyone here, who's worked in Imports know how I can find some buyers? I've signed up for some trade expos for the year but open to looking for more. Any advice for a newly started imports business will be appreciated! [link] [comments] |

Developers may need a co-founder in marketing Posted: 16 Sep 2021 11:35 PM PDT I just wanted to remind all of us of the importance of marketing. I chatted with a dev who started web analytics SaaS called Plausible which is now making $456,000 in ARR (annual recurring revenue). Here's a small graph that I made – I think this illustrates very nicely how important is marketing: You can see how Uku was working on the project for 16 months and then when he added a co-founder in marketing, their revenue started growing from $146 MRR to now almost $40,000 MRR.
