Like the title suggests, dad died and he didn't really have his affairs in order. I guess I'm just looking for a roadmap of things to take care of and suggestions of things we might be forgetting. My brother and i are his only two sons, and are therefore next of kin. We've been unable to find any info about any life insurance policies, but we're both fairly sure he had at least one. We're going to meet with the mortuary today, and we talked to the bank yesterday to ask questions and get the ball rolling. We haven't found a will, and we aren't entirely sure he even has one. Probably leaving stuff out, if there's any pertinent info i missed just ask in a comment. Thank you for your help in advance.

Edit: Thank you all so much for the great advice. We went to the mortuary today and settled everything there. I think we've decided to go ahead and get an estate attorney, if nothing else for the peace of mind. If anyone sees anything that hasn't been mentioned already, feel free to leave more comments, the information we've already received has been invaluable to us, as there's really no roadmap to this. Also a huge thanks to everyone who left words of encouragement and condolences, it truly means alot. To everyone else going thru the same thing currently, stay strong. And to everyone else, give your parents a call. Tell em you love em. You never when the last time will be.

Should I buy my childhood home ?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:33 PM PDT

My Grandmother is selling her home for 430k in Maryland, the place burned to the ground a few years ago and is basically brand new. She is gifting equity of 10% to me since I have just graduated and have no money to put down, my salary at my new job is 95k. The mortgage lender worked out that my mortgage would end up being almost $2200. Would it be a good financial decision for me to purchase it ? I'm just looking for advice or reassurance because I'm kind of a Mr.Krabs when it comes to spending money. I don't want to see the property leave the family either, its a great home in a great neighborhood.

    Thanks

Cash App Is Leaving Me Hanging On A Fraudulent Dispute - What Can I Do?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:34 PM PDT

On July 14, I sold an item to someone that I connected with on Facebook Marketplace. We arranged a local meetup and he paid via Cash App and received the product exactly as expected. Everything went smoothly with no issue.

Today (Aug 3), I get a notification that the buyer filed a dispute with his bank and Cash App was removing funds from my bank account to refund the buyer. At no point in time was I notified about a dispute nor was I asked to confirm any details of the exchange. I didn't authorize a refund. By the time I got the refund notification it was already pending from my account.

I contacted Cash App and here's what they said:

Thank you for reaching out. The sender filed a dispute claim with their bank to have the funds returned. A claim typically takes 90 days to resolve.

Since the sender filed the dispute through their bank, we do not have any details to provide. We recommend contacting the sender to discuss this activity further.

Cash App reserves the right to recover funds for a disputed transaction from your linked bank account, debit card, or Cash App balance. If funds are not available, we may debit the disputed amount from your Cash App balance, which may result in a negative balance.

Excessive disputes may lead to account deactivation. To learn more, please visit Square's Cash Terms of Service and Payment Terms.

I contacted my bank (Chase) and they told me that since the transaction had already started they couldn't do anything to stop payment. They also said I should take it up with Cash App. As a last ditch effort I filed an unauthorized charge claim (as directed by their customer service). So the charge might be covered under their fraud protection - though I'm not holding my breath.

So what can I realistically do here? Is it true that any Cash App user/buyer can call up their bank, lie about a recent transaction, and get their money refunded from the seller? I'm dumbfounded that Cash App will be a 3rd party to a transaction but then do nothing when there's a dispute. Each time I talk to them I get the same line.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm losing my mind with how easily this seems to be manipulated.

20 year old with $50k. How should I manage it?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:58 PM PDT

    Current financial standing:

    -$0 debt

-parents support me as they want me to finish school ASAP(I'm grateful otherwise I would not have been able to save up what I have currently)

-no bills except for gas and food

-have an old reliable Honda as my daily that I bought in cash for $3000

-majority of my money is earned from my own work and the rest from financial aid. (Less than 2% are from family )

I have $50k just sitting in my bank and cash. Not sure what I should do with it or the best way to manage it. The only idea I have so far is to max out my Roth IRA , invest 25% on index funds, and other 25-50% in growth stocks. I'd like to say keep 5-10% in cash for emergency & another 5% on money I can spend to enjoy my youth. Any money remaining will be put back into either investments. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

As a disabled veteran I’m really struggling and need advice. Update and further questions

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:43 AM PDT

Hi Reddit, I posted here recently please see the last post for detailed information about my current situation

    here

a summary of medical issues are: partially collapsed lungs, ground glass opacity in lungs, ARDS, 3 breaks in L femur (healing but not fusing back together), 0 degrees range of motion in R foot&ankle, CRPS in R foot&ankle, CRPS in R knee, chronic pain, undetermined back issues (degenerative schmorls nodes and end plate irregularities at multiple mid and lower thoracic levels), PTSD, Depression, GERD, high blood pressure, extremely high resting heart rate, low oxygen saturation (on supplemental oxygen), sleep apnea, in a wheel chair, and probably a plethora of other issues I can't think of.

My doctor has recommended that I file for SSDI ASAP, and that I do not continue working due to my health issues and the health impact from additional stresses caused from my job.

My wife is starting her own childcare program to try to start becoming more of the bread winner, however it won't start until next month and will still not fully replace my income.

I'm at the point that I'm barely doing my job. Due to intermittent fmla I'm approved to work from my home off my laptop, but between medical issues and medical appts, I'm barely doing my job. If I wasn't currently on FMLA I would 100% be fired or "let go". (I'm currently only completing 5-10% of my normal daily workload)

My patient advocate at the VA, along with you all, have advised that I apply for individual unemployability. My wife is taking me to get copies of all my medical records tomorrow to start this process.

After I get the disability increase to 100% or individual unemployability approved, I plan to quit my job, and also apply for SSDI.

I know that I can't be working and apply for SSDI at the same time.

My main question boils down to the VA individual unemployability, since I'm technically still working, will this automatically get rejected/denied?

My savings account officially hit $0 today, I'm behind on my mortgage, and late for several other bills currently.

I already have decreased income due to how little work I'm getting done, but I need what money I am currently making. I can't afford to quit, and I'm not sure what to do.

Any and all advise is extremely appreciated.

Thank you all I'm advance especially those of you who helped me out with the last post and pointed me in the right direction

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

So, what's the advice on cars? Lease or buy used ?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:40 AM PDT

I have about 7 grand saved.

I could buy a used Prius around 140K for 6 grand.

Or buy new for 30K, and spend $420 a month leasing.

Kind of at the end of my rope.

Started doing door dash etc for the past 3 months after work… and spent over 2 K in car repairs….Now it's broke.

I drive a taxi, only make $15 an hour…Looking for better pay

    Any advice ?

If you were given 10k solely for stock investments, minimum 3 years, where would you put your money?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:59 PM PDT

My grandfather is giving me and the other grandchildren $10,000, instead of getting it later, he wants to give it to us now, and watch our investments grow. I know a little bit about investing, but, not much (have a few stocks on Robinhood and some Cyrpto...most of these were on a whim and with little money). I am starting a small business this year and any money is so helpful, I am so grateful! I was thinking to put half in something 'safe' and half in something risky? What would you do?

    Budget the periodicals!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:23 AM PDT

In college, I set aside a few dollars every pay check for my car insurance. When that bill came due, I didn't think about it. It was a good feeling, but I didn't extend that to other areas of my life.

I've turned a page in personal financial comfort by setting aside cash for even the "small things" that I know I'm going to spend money on.

Car registration? I set aside $10 a month, it makes that $120 on my birthday an easy check to write!

Mom's birthday? If I set $5 a month aside, I can spend $60 without it impacting my life even a little bit.

When I first started budgeting, it didn't really make sense to me to budget every line item. Especially things that are only $5/mo but billed at $180 every three years. When that bill came due, it sure was tough to pay.

I've started a spreadsheet for all of these small but reoccurring expenses and dump cash into a separate account every paycheck. It's so much more comfortable than "dipping into savings" to pay for a gift or a regular expense.

Father offered early retirement buyout, then had stroke, can mother take the buyout for him?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:35 PM PDT

My father is a professor at a university. They are offering early retirement buyout offers to faculty at his university. He was considering the most recent offer, but hadnt made a decision.

A couple days ago, he suffered a massive stroke. His prognosis is still unclear, but it is clear that he will not be able to teach again. Can my mother or a power of attorney still take the buyout offer?

Tax Question: Working Remotely Ohio but Company is Based in California

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:46 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Today I received a job offer from a company that is based out of California. Since the pandemic, they have opened up their hiring policy for people to work remotely. I am currently living in Ohio. They said that due to them not being registered in Ohio that they would need to mark me down as if I was a California employee.

From there, at the end of the year, I would need to file a multi-state tax return according to the recruiter. I would be eligible for California OT laws, time off, etc.

All that being said, I know that California has a higher tax rate, but anything else I should be aware of? Will I have to pay state taxes twice or any other costs that I should be aware of?

Best places to refinance student loans?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:32 PM PDT

Hi! I'm 24 and currently a teacher in NJ. I was wondering what are some of the best student loan refinancing programs and your experience with these companies.

I currently owe about $100k in NJClass loans that I would like to refinance. I also pay about $1,500 per month (including both federal and Njclass), which is honestly one whole paycheck for me.

    Thank you for your help!

Is Vanguard good for buying stocks or Fidelity?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:29 PM PDT

Maybe a useless question just curious what people think is easier to use, and if using Fidelity/Vanguard is better than both on Vanguard?

I'm 18 with about $6,000 in my Vanguard Roth IRA, 100% in VTWAX. I've got another $3,000 wasting space in my savings account that I feel would be better put to use in either stocks or ETFs and I'd like to experiment a bit with individual stocks (not spending a lot, I'm more a fan of safe investments) with maybe a few hundred just to test the waters.

Would anyone suggest against Vanguard for stocks? I have a Fidelity account already but it doesn't have my card/bank account accepted yet and I'm so lazy I'd rather make this post than get it verified lol.

Apartments require income to be 3x rent. I make only about 1.5x rent, unemployed. Is it wise to offer 3-6 months payments upfront for a 1 year lease?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:41 PM PDT

The title pretty much explains it. I have plenty in savings to afford the apartment, but it's just the current income coming in that makes me look like a risky tenant. I'd like to find an apartment first then look for a job from there since my search for a job and apartment is pretty wide.

About to contribute more than 19,500 to my 401k but company is refusing to change my contribution amount?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:02 PM PDT

I've tried searching this thread, but haven't found anyone in this scenario. Basically I had a different job for the first half of the year, and contributed just over 11k to that 401k. Now, at my new employer I calculated that I would go over the max of 19,500 if i don't change my contribution amount by the end of August. The first week of July I changed the contribution amount to 0 in my Transamerica account. I also tried to verify with payroll that the amount would be changed in time. They are finally responding to me and claiming the change absolutely cannot go into effect until October 1? How can this be? Won't this be a headache for them and myself come tax time? When I login to my Transamerica account, it shows I changed the amount to zero, so shouldn't it be an easy fix on their end? I'm so annoyed and confused.

Just got into a very minor car accident with a lyft driver. what should i do next?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:43 PM PDT

I'm 19 years old and i just got into a very minor car accident. i was looking off to the side, the cars in my peripheral view started to move, i took my foot off the brake, and i bumped into the car in front of me. thankfully i hadn't picked up speed. my car seemed alright with no marks, but this guys bumper was alright marked and hit all over. there was a small scratch in the possible area my car hit his. he had a passenger with him, because as stated he is a lyft driver. the police weren't called. me and the driver exchanged information, being licenses, phone numbers, and insurance. the passenger was encouraging the driver to get my information, but he didn't seem like he wanted to take action beyond that. i'm practicality at a year in with my driver's license. i live in new york. the insurance is in my mother's name. should i try to contact him to see what he wants to do? is going off insurance an option? the driver said himself he wouldn't want an issue, but he said the customer might be an issue. any help with what i should do next is greatly appreciate.

    Should I sell my home?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:35 PM PDT

Hello all, Should I sell my home? Purchased in 2012, in today's market I have about 100k in equity. I owe 180k on the mortgage. I would not be accepting anything less than 100k over what I owe. After I sell my home, my family and I would move in with my mother in law for at least a year. Ideally I would like to save enough to where I can be my own general contractor and build on a lot. I'm thinking at least another 75k which I can save in a year or 2 or at least half of that and the rest I'd pull from my TSP. I've always wanted to have a larger property so that is the main motivation in selling.

Small 403b withdrawal for debt consolidation - smart or bad idea

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:59 PM PDT

I've recently decided to take a position that is 35 hours a week vs. 40 hours a week I've done my entire career. I'm almost 40, been contributing 7-10% of my paychecks for the last 15 years to a 403b. All I have is a car payment and a mortgage, about 35k and 300k. Without going into too much of my financial situation, I can manage fine but tight for the next 5 years, but was thinking of making an early withdrawal from my 403 to pay off the car and buy an engagement ring, nothing fancy but maybe another 5k. Maybe take out 30k, pay the taxes and penalty, and then I can contribute more to retirement and free up more cash per month. Is this a bad idea or another financial mistake? Thanks for the help.

I think my paychecks are always short

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:13 AM PDT

I have been working for a chain restaurant for a year now, and I can't fathom how my pay is coming out this low every time. I thought my math was wrong, so I ignored the issue as I mostly survive on tips alone. I am paid $10 an hour (just now became 11) as a To-Go worker. I work a minimum of 30 hours each week, and am paid biweekly. My paychecks have never been more than $360, and are more often about $325 (after tax). Can someone explain what has been happening or if it makes sense? I have been saving my clock-out stubs as proof of my hours.

I (25) have credit card debt due to bad food spending/addiction.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:55 PM PDT

So I know that this is all over this sub but I guess now it is my turn. I also hope that I have met all of the rules to post here. I really need this help. I am 25 and have a bachelors in electrical engineering. I live in Columbus, OH so cost of living is high but not insane. I have a full time job and I was door dashing to supplement my spending but I quit doing that since door dash changed their policies. I was engaged for 3 years and moved to Columbus with my fiancé and supported her for several years before we split up this past month. I went thru and documented every monthly payment that I have and put it into a spreadsheet that I will link at the bottom of this. I did not include fuel or food in this spreadsheet and I am looking for any advice that you guys have for me. I am at my limit. I have negative in my bank account and dont know where to start. Thanks in advance and obviously feel free to ask any questions. I know that I have made mistakes in the past and dont want to make them again in the future. would I be better off trying to get a consolidation loan? Should I just pay them off every month and take the time? I am lost as far as what to do.

Should I get a new credit card before buying a car?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:17 PM PDT

So I'm looking to buy a car in the next month and I wanted to take advantage of a good intro offer on a new credit card, since normally I have trouble spending enough to qualify for them. However, my concern is that getting a new credit card will lower my credit score because of the hard credit inquiry and by lowering my average credit age (I have 2 credit cards currently, maybe average age of 3 years). I know it won't decrease much, but I'm trying to get this 0% apr deal, and I want my credit to be in the best shape possible. It's currently at 816 according to Credit Karma. What do you all think?

529 question, one versus multiple accounts

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 06:56 PM PDT

This may be a dumb question, but does having one 529 account earn more money if the money is combined versus having two accounts and the money is split?

For example, 20K on two accounts versus one account with 40K.

I live in a state (TX) where there is no income tax deduction/benefit from having two accounts.

    Thanks!

Currently making 42k in a remote role, should I take NYC job for 60-63k?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:52 AM PDT

I recently interviewed for a role for a nonprofit for 60-63k in NYC. I'm currently working a remote role that pays 20 an hour or 42000, and I live in GA. Should I stay with my current role or take the one in NYC, and is 60-63k enough to live on there? My current role is also a 2 year contract role, so it will end after 2 years, whereas the NYC role is full time with benefits.

It'd be just me, I have no family or kids, so I could rent a 1 bedroom. Thing is I wonder if that's even realistic considering the rent prices. I feel NYC would offer greater opportunity than my small town in GA. I have about 30k saved up and a 7k car loan left, idk whether to just sell my car if I go there, leave it GA with my family, or what? Do I have enough saved up to move and is it feasible to live there on that salary or not even possible?

    I’m thinking about buying a car …

    Posted: 03 Aug 2021 08:21 PM PDT

I'm 18 years old, just graduated from high school, and I'm planning to buy a car within the next year... I'm fed up with walking and relying on others. I won't be attending college this autumn, which will save me a lot of money in the long run... For my first car, I've always wanted a jeep, which cost between $29k and $40k. That's alot of money for me! Friends of mine own used vehicles that break down every other week and require hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in maintenance. I don't want to be in those circumstances, thus I'd rather have a new or barely used car. How should I go about purchasing a vehicle? What are the most cost-effective and convenient ways to own a car?
