Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:47 AM PDT Working on some tax returns when the IRS-CI walked through our doors and told us to step away from our desks and gather in the lobby. Assuming this has something to do with filing for the Employee Retention Credit incorrectly for clients earlier this year. How should we respond? Do we have to comply with being interviewed? UPDATE: Apparently another accounting firm CEO has some beef with our CEO and put a plug in with the IRS that we were doing all of this sketchy stuff when in fact we were just doing it incorrectly. They are currently interviewing the higher-ups and payroll but let all the bean counters go. [link] [comments]

Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:17 PM PDT Officially resigned today. The Partner I worked closest with was pretty hurt, after discussing me leaving for about a week and him promising all types of changes and only having to work on stuff I'm interested in. Also admitted that the role I'm leaving for is a very good role and if it were someone else he would tell them to go. But the reason he was fighting was because he felt I was selling myself short because I'm the top performer. Just venting 😂 [link] [comments]

2021 A1 Starting Salary Thread Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:41 PM PDT It seems like most starting salaries have been adjusted higher, I've seen the comp threads for individual firms and they usually don't include A1s so I'm curious.

How do I find an accountant who is comfortable working with me... when my business isn't legal? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 02:15 PM PDT I've started escorting and have plans to expand - for example, renting a location for incall. Secondly, my expenses are high enough (make-up, clothing, hotel rooms, traveling, ...) to warrant itemized deduction. Lastly, I'd like to set up a company for this business for all expenses/revenue that pays me out, instead of doing this as a sole proprietorship and it mixing in with my other ventures. There's a few more complicating factors not worth mentioning. So I want to find a local accountant to navigate this. However, accountants don't have client privilege so I'm worried they'd report me to the police, try to hold power over me (blackmail, asking sexual favors, ...) or just reveal details when someone would inquire about me (I have a stalker ex). Even if I don't say what I do, my business expenses make it pretty obvious. And of course, I don't want to be deceitful in case they are uncomfortable with this. While the nature of my work is illegal, I want to do as much as possible above board. I don't have social connections to navigate this. My escorting mentor has a long-time client who does her accounting. While I do have one returning client who is an accountant, I'm not comfortable hiring him. It's too much of a safety risk: he already knows my work persona and then would also know my real name, address, family status and so on. In other words, I'll have to reach out to local accountants. How should I approach an accountant to find one comfortable working with me?[link] [comments]
How did you decide whether you were going into Tax or Audit while in college? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:45 PM PDT If this is applicable to you, would you please share how you determined whether tax was a better fit for you or audit? I'm going to be a senior this year and I plan to get my CPA as soon as I can. I realized that most of the accounting firms ask us to pick an area of specialization, but I haven't even taken an audit class yet. I'm really not sure which one is right for me and I have to start applying for jobs soon. Literally any advice at all would be much appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Has anyone ever been placed on a performance review plan? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 01:37 PM PDT I am slightly shellshocked and still digesting this because I didn't know what I signed until I got back to my desk. Stupid, I know. So, my boss scheduled this meeting to be (I thought) just them and me. No, another higher up was sitting in as well. My boss also mentioned this meeting to me in passing, saying it was my mid year evaluation. This made sense to me at the time because they're currently scheduling everyone's mid year evaluations right now. Anyway, while this boss, higher up and I have previously discussed my performance and areas of improvement, there was never any indication or mention of a performance improvement plan. Not once. So, today, I thought these were just a list of tasks they put together to try to help me improve. I thought that because that's literally what was said. I completely missed the headline at the top of the page. Until I got to my desk. There are definitely all attainable tasks, but the "plan" says they will "review" in 90-days. Should I go to the higher up and explain that I didn't exactly realize what was in front of me..? I'd also kind of like to know if this means I need to be responding to the recruiters in my inbox, but I don't think there's a great way to phrase that. I wasn't previously thinking they'd fire me, especially since we are painfully short staffed and have high turnover, but I guess that's something I need to start worrying about. ETA- I'm also concerned about this being the topic of conversation. It seems any and all news spreads like wildfire here, so I'm highly doubtful that only these two people know. Is 34 years old too old to go back to school for accounting? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:34 AM PDT I just turned 34 years old and never went to college. Immediately after high-school I got my p&c/life & health insurance licenses. I have been off and on working dead end sales roles in the insurance industry ever since. I currently have a wife and a 1 year old. I have been looking at making a career change and was interested in accounting. The plan would be to do two years at a community College that's right next to my house and then finish at a university. I was just looking for some Input on the accounting career field when compared with the age ill be starting. Is there a potential different path I could take under the same rubric? Are there any accounting certifications that you can get for free? Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:41 PM PDT Non native English speaker here. This is most likely a stupid question. Are there any accounting certifications that anyone in the world (ie its open internationally) one can get online for free? By free I mean really free and anyone in the world can apply for it online and get it. And not a scheme where you will do the courses for free but they will charge you a price for the ultimate certificate. Or a scheme where its available to only people in certain countries or where the free certification is a complementary to a paid product. Also by accounting I am including ALL accounting roles such as accounting clerk, bookkeeper, accounting technician, accountant, niche specialties and so on. [link] [comments] |
