    The ups and downs of entrepreneurship... A story and lessons learned from coming back to the ground after recent heights.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:28 AM PDT

    I'll start off by saying that I know maybe 80%+ of business owners were hit bad by COVID and had to deal with a drastic decline in business, but I'm grateful mine did the opposite and hit all time highs during 2020 carrying strong throughout the year. So big props to all of you physical business /restaurant owners that made it through 2020, I hope you all are thriving now.

    Also, for those who have not been entrepreneurs or are not yet seasoned (I'm hardly there), understand that the lows will occur even after highs. You'll eat humble pie right after being on top of the world one way or another.

    So here's my story of how that all played out, I hope you guys find this useful/informative.

    ~~~
    WINNING
    I was making $200-$1000 per day mostly passively, living the 4 hour work week as my website selling digital products and making ad revenue with a subscription on the backend.
    The business just grew and grew, I thought it would never stop.
    I remember on Black Friday, I sent out an email and made almost $1600 within 30 minutes, and then proceeded to sell even more products and have ad revenue on top of that.
    Offers were being made to acquire my business, and I turned them all down, all would have been life changing money.
    I was living an absolute dream, travelled the world, lived in paradise, and I kept thinking I was tripping because damn, this is what I dreamed about when I was broke years ago, I FREAKING MADE IT !!!
    THIS TOO SHALL PASS
    ...Then things turned.
    I forked up big money to an SEO guy in Dec 2020, and it ended up being a huge mistake. The project dragged on for months and eventually failed and I left the guy a bad review and then he proceeded to mess up my website, taking it down from the server that only he had access to and charging all my subscribers out of their billing cycles, causing tons of chargebacks, refunds and general lack of trust in my site.
    To fix this, I had to spend a bunch of money on developers while putting the subscription on hold and continuing to give out free months and refunds as the problem continued.
    I was able to recover an older version of the site which was missing nearly 100 posts that were ranking well on Google, so soon enough, my traffic ended up tanking because of these lost posts in combination with recent Google updates.
    My business declined a bit up until April and then totally tanked since.
    HUMBLE PIE
    So, here I sit and I am looking at about $1000 in profit this month after a loss the previous month, and am still sinking money into technical assistance to getting my business back. I was making more than this 3 years ago when I was just 4 months into my business. 1 year ago today, I was doing about $15K /month. Now my sales, along with my Google traffic, are down nearly 80%.
    To make things worse, this decline timed with racked up medical bills from a surfing injury requiring surgery last year and big L's in the recent crypto craze, so I basically completely ran out of money after having made more money than most people do. I recently overdrew my bank account a few times and borrowed money from friends and family and took out a loan.
    Honestly I can't afford my rent anymore so I'm subletting out my place and living with my parents for a bit again then going off to Bali (it's super cheap there) on a free flight from points I racked up last year on my biz card for the next few months as I work on reviving my business.
    Although part of my downfall was due to this bad contractor, I can do nothing now other than make due with the situation I'm in now. I'm still taking full ownership and responsibility for my business and where it is and where it's going.
    I'm eating humble pie and working the most I ever had for my business and making the least I ever had since it's gained traction.
    LESSONS LEARNED
    Here's a psychological truth that needs to be experienced to be understood fully, but losing money feels way way worse and is a stronger sensation than the highs of making tons of it. Think minus 100 vs plus 10. Or how bad it feels to get stabbed vs how good it feels to get a massage. Sure, it's good to be winning, but you get used to reeling in stacks and become numb to and normalize it, but when you're down bad and losing money it eats at you big time.
    The silver lining is that now I'm laying out a more solid foundation for my business and creating more of a process and tracking and analyzing more data than I did when things were gravy-- when sales are low, I find out where they're all coming from and how to do more of it and how to increase conversion rate, when sales were high, ironically I never took the time to see how I was even doing this, just sort of riding on luck and intuition--so I should in theory bounce back higher than I was before in due time.
    Although I have faith I'll get back to my past highs and go even higher, I have doubts sometimes, thinking it's all gone.
    This is an enormous lesson in patience: I have no idea if I've even seen the lowest lows yet, but this is absolutely the lowest I can afford to before needing a job, something I swore I'd never do again--but...
    Because I was so low on money, I took the first job (a one time gig) I had in years and it was manual labor helping a guy clean his house and doing yardwork (found this gig on Craigslist) and sold a bunch of my possessions.
    So I'm hungry and scrappy again, something that was missing when I was riding high and reeling in dough.
    GRATITUDE AND HAVING SOLID HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF BUSINESS
    Truthfully I was and still am a bit depressed about this, but I'm taking as much action as possible to get back, which is part of why I haven't totally given up or picked up a bad habit.
    The biggest thing that saved me is gratitude for other things in life I have, and life in general.
    I'm so grateful I have the ocean and surfing which my previous business success afforded me the free time to pursue nearly full time to get good enough where I am today. This is something totally unrelated to how much money I make, so I think it's an absolute necessity that entrepreneurs and business owners have some sort of hobby that has nothing to do with business but with a higher force of nature that keeps you balanced. Something like boxing or hiking or drawing or writing or whatever. I don't recommend golfing or road biking or car racing because these are hobbies where you hang out with wealthy people one upping each other. Surfing and boxing etc puts everyone at a level playing field in relation to their skill--money and business success is irrelevant in these contexts.
    I'm still not a slave employee of someone else, I simply hold full responsibility for my actions and my business which I'm choosing to work hard on now, and I'm grateful I'm in this position even though it's not currently profitable--I'm still the owner and creator of a cashflow machine, something some people will never produce in their lives.
    Now, when I run into money in the future, I'm going to cherish it and save more.
    Also, I expect that regaining what I have lost in terms of money will feel just as good as or honestly maybe better than making my very first consistent online dollars.
    NEVER GIVE UP!
    Maybe I'll update you guys later on in my journey if there's interest, and either way, I hope you guys have the strength to continue along with your journey in entrepreneurship if you're struggling in the beginning, middle, or thinking of ending.
    Also, for those of you riding high, don't take it for granted, and develop and foster that healthy hobby that has nothing to do with money ! Don't become a chazzer (Scarface), which I kinda did.
    And most of all, never give up ! This is an incredible opportunity for me to grow as a person and an entrepreneur, and I'm happy that I'm on such an exciting ride :)
    TL;DR:Went from making more money than some people dream of while working very little and travelling to not being able to afford rent, moving back to parents for a bit and taking a manual labor gig and selling possessions to get by after overdrafting my bank account, all within 1 year.
    To survive this, take full responsibility, have a healthy hobby completely outside of business (even when you're successful), and be grateful for everything and never give up!
    edit: not gonna reveal my site for all those asking
    ALSO a Google update contributed to my lowest lows, the contractor wasn't *entirely * to blame.
    addendum: Yes. A simple backup would've fixed the recovering posts issue, but it may not have fixed the script inserted to bill people outside of their cycle--also what the guy did was clever-- I had thought my site was backed up, but it wasn't.
    He suggested I migrate my hosting over to another company which he said he can handle, so although I had access to that server which automatically created backups, he never even moved the site over to that new server and kept it on his own -- he also did web design changes which is why he needed server / backend access and a staging environment etc -- and yes, it was my bad for not checking that the site was actually deploying on the new server I was paying for (another loss in this situation) but I had just trusted and assumed that he had migrated it over to the new server as he said... I guess I forgot about this because I drop things that no longer serve me and are well in the past, of course I now know to not only regularly back up my site but also make sure the site is actually being backed up.
    Losing friendships
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:56 AM PDT
    I started a business at 26 and immediately was pretty successful with it. Within my first year I was off to a 6 figure income. I began noticing my friends behavior changed toward me. At the time I had no idea what was going on. I am not one to brag and remained pretty down to earth during that time. It's not like I was a millionaire. But I now realize nearly all of my friends had jealousy issues because I was making more money than them. 6 years later and I've lost a lot of my good friendships. Part of it is that I have chosen not to invest in the people who don't want what's best for me. A lot of the friendships I had were toxic.
    I grew up in an area where there is a greedy culture (Boca Raton FL) and I think it made a lot of my friends entitled and bitter toward me.
    I wish in my first year I knew it was jealousy causing them to act that way. Because I grew self conscious and wondered why they were starting to dislike me. I tried harder to get them to like me. But I shouldn't have to be something else to have my friends like me. Im far from the top but I understand the saying "it gets lonely at the top". I've learned that when you change, don't expect everyone to remain the same towards you. Your true friends will, but I've learned I have few true friends. Even my own brother has jealousy issues and wants me to be beneath him.
    UPDATE: It seems a lot of you relate to my story. However I'm also getting ppl who are trying to say this is a humble brag on my part and I'm a toxic person etc. If you find yourself thinking that, or feeling emotional in any way, you probably have your own financial insecurities you need to address. This post is just me wanting to share my story, and hopefully forewarn the young entrepreneur who might go through a similar thing. It was a very painful thing for me to go through but when I understood jealousy was the root of it, it helped a little. Because for a while I took responsibility for it and assumed it was me who was the problem.
    Partners seem unmotivated
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:28 PM PDT
    So im a highly driven, motivated, and dedicated individual that walks the walk more than talks the talk.
    I accidentally joined the army reserves in order to get that little boost I need to get started with my plan, so im away from home right now.
    I've been networking with my plans, trying to find people with skills that would help my venture (and they would also be rewarded, not free work). But most people who are wanting to join me just seem unmotivated, or limiting the plans to something "acheivable" that sets the bar so low it wouldn't even be worth doing. They are all close friends or family. Here are some examples:
    MY FATHER: landlord and farmer, both things I aspire to have a part of in my business, or businesses. Cant be bothered to take my advice or his own. He wants a farm and will work on that farm, but decides that things are "good enough" like broken fence that cows jump out of everyday. He works 2 jobs and has 9 houses, so he is by far lazy or dumb, just... likes to live like a trashy redneck for some reason?
    One of my friends: want to make extra cash and knows computers and apps really well. He wants to do Amazon return pallets, but doesn't actually WANT to do it cause it may not work. He is risk averse.
    My little sister: doesn't really stick with anything, but loves to do things, get the attention, then switch once she lost the hype people give her. She wants to buy rentals with me also, but I feel she would work with me and stop once I would start to really count on her.
    I feel like the only way to really get my group to stick through with what THEY want for themselves that would benefit the both of us significantly is to just do all of that myself and once I succeed have them take over.
    How can I convince them to stick with their goals and wants that we frequently plan to make my life easier so I wouldn't have to start out having to do all that?
    TL;DR: friends/family express their goals, I incorporate them with my plans and goals so we can grow together, but they seem to only talk about doing instead of actually doing, how do I help motivate them to take action?
    Legal Question - DCMA and Lawsuits (YouTube Embed)
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:31 AM PDT
    Quick question, if I take a public video on YouTube that has an embed feature turned on (user setting), and display it on my website. The author of the video emails me, demands I take it down or he will go after me or send a DCMA to my register. Do I have to comply?
    It's one thing if the video is on my server and I'm hosting it, but if it's freely available to be seen on youtube and the author-enabled embedding features, can I possibly get in trouble for displaying it on my website? Even if the video is hosted on youtube by the author?
    I’m making an app and wonder whether I should make an MVP on just iOS or whether I should also develop for android?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 11:16 AM PDT
    If anyone has any experience on whether android is worth the extra effort (I have made apps for iOS before, but never android so I would have to learn the process) in as early stage as the MVP, I'd love to get some advice.
    Should i get a job while having a buisness?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:23 PM PDT
    I am working as a freelance Filmmaker since 2 years now and i earned about 40k last year, the actuall time when i was working is about 7 months and for the rest i had just smaller jobs with little payment or couldnt work because of lockdown. I could have also worked more efficiently which would have reduced the time that i was working again.
    I got a job offer from a film company were i help them with different projects sometimes, it would be a part time job were i would get about 28k per year for working 24h / week + paid vacation, health insurance and additional retirement money which the employer needs to pay, they offer me this job because they are happy with my work but they say they cant affort to pay my price for longer. Their reason is that they wont make any profit on it when i am working for them 3 times per week
    They say we can keep going without employment too but i would need to reduce my price for about 30%, which will result in about 24k per year without the benefits u would have as employee.
    Something to note is that i am a registered company with a reduced tax system that allows me to earn not more than 65Ä· per year. With this company paying 24k i would reach the limit of 65k very easily next year, that is not good because i would need to change the registration catogory which will rise the cost by a lot. When working as an employee i would not have to worry about this.
    I know the owners of this company quite well now and we are getting along very well, i would not mind to keep working with them, i am sure i will learn a lot and i would need the additional money, but the only way how i can work for long with them would be as an employee which makes me feel a little uncomfortable but i would like the benefits, on the other side i will lose a lot of time while working for this company, time that i could use to build my own buisness, to get more and bigger clients or create some other income stream.
    What kind of decision would you make in my situation?
    What shall I do?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:56 PM PDT
    How much experience is enough.
    I have 1.5 years experience in recruitment. I get told I have a natural ability on the phone, & I have a family member who is willing to help me start out on my own. (Business advice, LinkedIn recruiter & general start up costs)
    Is it better to wait and learn from the people around me in my already really small agency (another year or so, and go out on my own)
    Or, keep working for another 5 years see where it takes me and start out on my own when the risk is higher.
    I already know how I would organise this agency, and the markets i want to target.
    How do I recruit a social media influencer?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 07:46 AM PDT
    How do I recruit a social media influencer?
    I would like to hire one, or more, social media influencers to market my product (Europe only). I want to pay them what I think is a very generous percentage of every sale they make by giving them a unique coupon code on my webshop. The problem is, where do I find them? So far I've asked two people who are big on social media and doing something related to my industry but neither of them even got back to me. I have a lot of product to sell but I'm so busy making it I really need help with marketing. Any ideas?
    so I've tried to do a dropshipping site like a year ago, it was sort of working but i had to stop it because people were requesting refunds because the products take way too long to ship like 30 days even, and then i would get scammers from other countries.. how can i avoid this from happening again.
    E-commerce, the foundation? Still achievable? Resources? Variants?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 09:37 AM PDT
    Essentially what the title suggests, I've seen many things being said about this practice but many seem to be in an 'AD' format where they seem to get a commission if you buy the services they recommend. I first realized this when on social media BlueHost was getting raving reviews and recommendations, but when you look closer the actual community that bought into it is not happy with anything that the company does, (this is one example).
    I know there are posts on social media that aren't like this but when it comes to Reddit, I can only find people telling a story on they succeeded or either failed. I wanted to find a post that can really point in the right direction to go and hit the floor running. As such any help is much appreciated these below are my biggest questions as of now. Thanks.
    My questions;
    • I know e-commerce is a large scope, but in a general is there still a viable way to get into this business-wise? -
    • If the prior answer was yes, what resources did you learn from? -
    &
    • If you had to start again, how would you re-enter the market? -
    • What variant of e-commerce would you recommend for a beginner? (B2C, B2B, D2C, etc...)
    About me, I am 19. I have a little bit of money to back me up if I believe in the venture, I am good with most things on the Internet. I have built some websites in the past (never published them though), I have in-person selling skills, which have partially translated into online selling skills at a small level.
    The goal? I want to make a business that is successful and sustainable. This would then hopefully be my job and then repeat until I had a few and go from there. (No point thinking about running when I haven't started to walk yet)
    Any advice or tips would be great, cheers.
    Posted: 03 Jul 2021 03:23 PM PDT
    I just noticed that I don't care anymore about people, I just view them as a waste of time for example if I talk to my friend that's time I could have spending working/studying/training.
    The same goes with people outside, I give less and less shid about people all I see is numbers and improving my bank account the "issue" is that I don't feel lonely or anything this is what worries me, is it normal??
    I'm European and I'm looking for a US based partner
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:01 PM PDT
    Question: what happens to damaged tesla cars in the US? I'm sure the that the cars that can be fixed are fixed, but the others that need a little more work? From what I've heard over the years, they get dumped. The ownes gets their money from insurance and get a new one. At some point joe Rogan made himself a Tesla out of two cars but couldn't register it. Maybe we can sell them in the Europe ? If they are up to the standards, I guess maybe. Or sell them for parts.
    I'm looking to test this with someone. We can meet on discord or skype, and talk it over.
    Football Academy what do you think ?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 06:58 AM PDT
    TL;DR
    We have a football academy of 45 players, there are other two, that both they have about 300 players, my goal is to invest money, marketing ideas, and websites to help gain 150 players as a first step and then making franchises in other areas
    Long version:
    My brother is a football coach and has a football academy. It used to be the first. Now there are many. and in the same area there are two other than him.
    the other two one has easily 100 children, and the other 200 children. My brother has 45 children.
    The thing is, i want to enter as a partner with a plan of making the academy stands on its feet again.
    What do i think of this ?
    There are many things, No academy has a website, no academy has mobile app, to see the news, the advancement of their children etc. (Me as a software engineer i can make that possible), All the marketing done by the others are through connections etc. There is a marketing work that can be done, through website(image, training plans, price plans, videos ), through posters, through Facebook ads and through the profile of my brother which is quite interesting.
    An example is they sell the uniform for 15$. (through my pack it will be free and given with the registration, it might be bad business at first, but will help bring people and the money could be recovered of giving free uniforms, new material, marketing through having 150 people in six months all we be recovered. )
    I am starting to form ideas, no plan is clear for the time being. However, the goal is to go from 45 children to 150 players.( Then when we have as much number as the other two then we can boost and go for more marketing more strategic to eliminate concurence through various methods).
    For me its all about the image we give and the quality we present to customers (the fathers of children).
    The problem is, how start having more people than the other two academies and bring people from them to us.(the second plan is to open the same academy in the other area expanding ).
    Do you think i should invest my money and my time in it ?Do you any ideas ?
    (if we have 150 people , and we invest together me and my brother, 5000$ it will be recovered in 5 months at most, then we can start gaining money and try to expand. my first goal is to acheive 150 player and get back investmeent in total period of 9 months, then my goal is to expand )
    Payment Processing
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:46 PM PDT
    I was previously doing around $15k USD in monthly revenue for a business I run selling social media likes, views, followers, etc. I've been having troubles lately finding a payment processor for us, after having used stripe for almost a year.
    If anyone knows or even better owns a payment processor, let me know and I'll reach out. I'm willing to pay decent fees for this, as I want to just hit the ground running and actually accept CC payments.
    For reference, Stripe shut my account down cause it doesn't support the niche, has nothing to do with the account standing as the dispute rate was <1%.
    New distributed social media app on Android
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:39 PM PDT
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tricitizen.wellness
    The primary goal is to make getting onto the Tox network as easy as possible. Tox is a decentralised social network, which many people now want to move onto due to fears about censorship.
    It also contains a generic habit manager for managing self care tasks and then securely sharing that data with others without going through a central server. There's also 4000 audiobooks for free, which seems to the top category for digital purchases in wellness.
    This is what I've been able to get done so far without investment. I do have a seed investor interested, however, I wanted to hold off in taking cash until I knew post-release what the money would need to be spent on.
    I also decided to hold off due to the sheer technical complexity involved with creating a scalable Tox network app on Android. I figured out how to do it in Sept 2020, however, it took until Feb 2021 to get past the integration point. Now that I'm past the integration point, it could act as a base for creating a WhatsApp replica for the Tox network on Android.
    I'm an advisor for funds with over $200 million
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 12:17 PM PDT
    I started a company that mostly does consulting and engineering for technology infrastructure . I've had some success; my first client, a medium-sized company worth close to a billion, paid me $10k for some engineering and consultations on grants.
    Infrastructure is expensive. I'm a small shop, and not having much luck on the engineering side. But whenever I speak about funding I get everyone's attention, so I've focused on being able to source funding.
    Now I have relations with multiple funds and close to a quarter billion dollars in funds I can refer projects to. I am an advisor, I can refer and vet investments. My partners are NOT VCs who want to hand out cash willy-nilly for equity. One partner does debt funding, the other builds and holds infrastructure long term, leasing it out.
    What's the best way to do outreach for investment ideas? When I first started with just the debt funding partner, I was doing cold outreach and didn't like feeling like a salesman. I want people coming to me this 2nd round.
    My ideas so far:
    • approaching government offices for partnerships
    • reaching out to investor relations office of different companies
    More ideas appreciated. Another area I'd like feedback is an NDA where I'm not prohibiting myself from pursuing ideas with other parties than the proposer. I've encountered too many times where companies say "We just need a couple million and great things are on the horizon". But when I try to do due-diligence the truth about their performance comes out.
    Thanks and happy 4th everyone!
    hiring app developer through equity - what's fair?
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 10:48 AM PDT
    we have a physical product that has been selling steadily over the last 6 months. It can be adapted to a digital product as an app. instead of paying a fee, would like to bring in a programmer for a piece of equity. how to determine fair equity? 50%? 25? 75%?
    alternative would be just to let them keep X% of app sales instead of giving equity. would appreciate any suggestions.
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 09:32 AM PDT
    Hi. I'm brand new to entrepreneurship and want to form a partnership for web/mobile app development and I exploring different SaaS ideas.
    Where I'm stuck is when do we need to stick with a business name and make a website for branding purposes? Or maybe we don't even need a main brand before we roll out our first app. I picked a placeholder name that we're using to sign up for hosting services until we land on a forever name.
    I (backend developer) have an app idea and found a friend who is a front end developer that had the exact same idea but with a different twist. We are working together on this but don't yet have a final name for the app.
    If this app fails we will learn from it and move on to our next idea, we have a bucket full of them. So this could be a long term partnership.
    One thing I'm trying to keep in mind is that if the partnership fails then I still want access to all the work we have done so that I can continue on solo or find another partner. I assume we just need to come to an agreement for what happens if shit hits the fan?
    This might be jumbled but I tried my best to word my mental spider web here. Thanks for reading.
    Idea for a website!
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 02:50 AM PDT
    Hey everyone, I noticed a post which had many people complaining of a certain problem that many job seekers face - interview ghosting.
    Here's my currently worthless idea.
    Create a website that lets users review a companies employment process whether they failed to get the job or not.
    Obviously, there needs to be an incentive for people to review companies they're searching. Examples of this could be gift vouchers or cash rewards that can be cashed out.
    Reviews could have an indicator showing how useful it is, like how reddit measures how popular a post is by the upvotes and downvotes.
    Problem/niche: Potential employers ghosting potential employee's.
    Competitors: I dunno..
    Revenue: Revenue could be from adverts or a premium service which removes adverts and provides access to a resume and cover letter support feature where a real person will help you optimise your CV's and cover letters.
    Marketing: Attempt partnerships with existing job-seeking websites, market at universities where students, especially graduates will be eying at jobs and advertise anywhere where people are searching for jobs in general.
    Growth: This is simply adding features and forking into different businesses.
    Reviews
    CV and cover letter aid
    Actual job-seeking website
    Targeted partnerships, something like a recruiting agency.
    International expansion.
    I know this idea is worthless and I'm not in a position to execute it well, (I dont have the funds to hire a website developer nor the time to learn how to do everything myself nor do I have the relevant contacts to help me get started on this idea but I would really appreciate that if you do wish to execute it that you involve me in some way. I'm sure I'll be able to provide value.
    Need advices for online business ~_^
    Posted: 04 Jul 2021 01:57 AM PDT
    Hi everyone, I have a few questions for you.
    I am a professional welder, passionate about computers, graphics and drawing.
    I know how to code (html, css, js, vue.js, python & haskell) and do graphic design with photoshop, illustrator etc..
    I have developed a small website (here is the address), made all the graphic charter (colours, logo, content elements) I have literally designed everything from A to Z
    With time I also made a Youtube channel that I'm struggling to take off and recently I finished the template of my instagram account ( picture here ).
    The file is 3000 pixels wide by 10000 pixels high, all cut into squares of 1000 pixels by 1000. I had the idea to invest some money to advertise on instagram (some boxes like the one on the right of the Python part are planned to become sponsored content)
    My goal is to provide content in my field (metallurgy) and in programming (Python & Haskell) and eventually to provide more technical content for a fee.
    I'd love some advice on how to develop this, what to focus on and how to grow my audience.
    Thanks for your time friends! :D
