Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:13 AM PDT I'm in Florida. I have no problem helping my ex out, I know I'm equally responsible for her getting pregnant. I just want absolutely nothing to do with her parents ever again. They paid for the abortion up front and were told they would be reimbursed by insurance, but the insurance was denied. Bill totals somewhere around $750. I kicked my gf out pretty soon after (dirtbag move, I know) and when her mom and step dad came by to help her move, they took 2 guitars I have. They're pretty high end and together are worth like double what the surgery costs. When I found out my stuff was gone, I assumed my ex did it and asked her over text if I could have my things back. Later that night, she called and told me she didn't know what I was talking about until her parents asked her what my guitars are worth. I didn't believe her at first because her parents seemed like really good people, but it ended up being true. I showed up the next morning and my ex and I had a plan to just get into the Uhaul, load my guitars up, and the whole thing would be over. She couldn't find the keys and resorted to straight up asking them to give me my things back. I stayed in my car for the ENTIRE ordeal. Her parents eventually came out screaming and the beer smell was so strong I could smell it down the driveway. They started with telling me about myself then start asking how much my "shitty" guitars are worth. Then they start asking how much money I brought to get my stuff back and tried to make me choose between guitars. My ex eventually snatched my shit out of her mom's hands and loads them in my car. They continued yelling as I made my way out, hitting my car and stuff. Her mom texted me last night saying they "expect" me to pay them back and sent receipts along with their venmo. Like I said in the title, I don't mind helping out with what I am responsible for, but I don't want anything to do with these people. They never asked me to pay for it, they never said they expected me to until now. I offered to pay it at first before the insurance said no to reimbursing them and they told me that they had it. Instead of doing any of the above, they just stole from me and tried using my stuff to get money out of me. So my question: am I legally obligated to giving them money? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:41 AM PDT Jesus christ on ice, guys. I wont say the name, in case this thread gets popular, just to save my ass. Whatever. I own a business that focuses on photograph preservation, archival solutions, selling ephemera, family heirloom management, among other things. We have strong values on image permeance. But now we have focus on spreading the legacy of this photographer, and showing his never before seen work to the public. But we do not know how money gets involved, or if we are even allowed to show it. This is what we got
I need to know what to look for in terms of resale right that I have as a reseller. His family is not involved. She assumed it all was trash, but after we told her we were archiving it and planning on spreading his work, she was thankful that it was in our hands. His work as a personal photographer for a celebrity is hard, because it may belong to the photographer, or the celebrity, or maybe copyright was transfered to someone else after both of those people died? aaaaaa I have 30 BINDERS and 9 massive archival photo print boxes. His print shipping container for his work. I just sold his camera gear depreciation and income and spending finances ledger. Do I need to contact one of those fancy rich people auction houses? I really don't want anyone to take this collection away from me... :( [link] [comments] |
I got sucker punched then head stomped about a dozen times Posted: 05 Jul 2021 06:45 PM PDT So I was hanging with some buddies a few months ago and one guy spills some chicken on the floor of my room. I asked him to pick it up(I'm sober btw) and he( who is far from sober) gets in my face and says something like "don't tell me what to do…"Yada yada etc. I begin to walk away from him and he punched me in the back of the head and proceeds to stomp on my head while I'm unconscious. My jaw was fractured in 6 places. Minor brain damage miraculously. I'm in the us military so this guy got NJPd but I was wondering what else I could do. The guy left me there on the floor with a broken face choking on my own blood over a piece of chicken. Btw I still have to work with this ck s**r. The bot told me to include my location. I'm in California. US military base [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:23 AM PDT Title pretty much explains everything, minus the fact that I received a notice to quit because I have apparently complained too much about a dangerous person, whom they've allowed to live next door to me for the last 6 months — despite the fact that this person is currently wanted by authorities in my state for stabbing someone else, and has continued to be a nuisance ever since moving in. To make a long story short, I am now traveling back and forth every few days between two residences (one of them being the property that is owned by the landlord in question) and I'm wondering if the landlord can get away with entering my other home while I'm away (and without notifying beforehand) to change the locks and steal my belongings from me — even if I catch them in the act on my home security cameras? For the record, my lease specifically states that my landlord can assume that I have abandoned the property if I am gone away for more than seven days — although I am there at least 3 days out of the week. It also states that they must give me 24 hours advance notice if they wish to enter the home. It has become quite obvious though that my landlord has decided to not abide by the rules that are listed in the lease that I have signed with them. It has also become apparent to me that the police and the prosecutor's office in my county have taken this landlord's side anytime I bring this issue to their attention — which leaves me with very little faith in my county's court system. All that said, is there anything I can do in case my landlord violates their own lease agreement by unlawfully entering my home to change the locks; ultimately repossessing everything that I own? Or am I just over thinking this entire situation? EDIT: My location is Michigan [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:20 AM PDT I purchased a car through a car dealership and was approved at 0% through Chrysler capital in early May. Now I just received a letter stating I was not approved for those terms and to contact the dealership for a counter offer. I've already put miles on it and the bumper has a tiny dent. I've also made two payments on it. How will this work out? How is this even possible over a month later? If I don't agree with these updated terms can I just return the truck? [link] [comments] |
Neighbor using sonic warfare to deter dog walkers Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:28 AM PDT My next door neighbor (California) installed these motion-activated sonic emitters that blast everyone walking by in the street. I'm not on their property in any way, but I have to deal with being assaulted by this ear splitting noise, not to mention what it must feel like to my dog. Their intention is to keep dogs off their lawn, but my dog is always on leash and on the public street, yet we both have to suffer for the crime of walking in public. Is there anything I can do to force them to remove this sonic booby trap? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:40 AM PDT My great grandfather had land that has oil and gas and someone else has been benefitting. How do we gain access to the land and the rights to the royalties and all that? I am in Texas. We are a huge family but only a few had found out about this land and went ahead and kept it a secret for years and have been benefitting in thousands of dollars per month on royalties. Neighbor From Hell Harassing My Child/Family Posted: 05 Jul 2021 08:26 PM PDT Short but sweet version: We (myself, wife, 17-month-old boy) live in Los Angeles, in the top floor of 2-story duplex. We've been here for three months, with nary a week going by without our downstairs neighbor complaining about our son walking across the floor. We've put down carpets and erected gates. We've altered our daily routine to mitigate this problem. It's never enough. Last week she mounted a speaker to her ceiling with the cone facing my floor. When our baby walked across the kitchen, she blared her TV/stereo so loud it shook the house. We altered property management. The next day, she did it again and left the property for three hours with the music blaring. We alerted property management. The day after that, we called the police. The police told her that her behavior was illegal. They also confirmed my long-held suspicion that being a baby is totally legal. Tonight, she called the police on us, falsely claiming we were purposefully disturbing her. I'd love to hear this community's advice. I do have video of her the noise coming from our floor with a decibel meter. Is there a legal db limit for indoor noise disturbances? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:15 PM PDT My boyfriend and I are looking to buy a house after living together for about 5 years. His mom is putting up our down payment and we're responsible for the mortgage. I have no large sum of money to put up initially, as I'm still paying off student loans. I'll probably cover some closing costs and major appliance purchases. Our plan has always involved me contributing to the monthly mortgage payments. So originally, the agreement was that we'd both be applicants on the mortgage. I have the better credit rating and we'd get more buying power with a lower interest rate with our combined incomes. But, he doesn't want my name anywhere on the deed or the title. Because the down payment is his family's money, he feels that he deserves full ownership. I told him this wasn't very fair, as my money would be going toward the mortgage. I'm fine with him being the primary owner, I've pitched that we literally can split it 90-10 or even 95-5. He says once the mortgage is paid (5-10 years with our income and the houses we're budgeting for), only then, can we change the deed to show split ownership based on the percentage we both contributed. This is concerning to me legally and financially. Going this route, I'm essentially left with no legal protection to a place that I'm living and paying for. If something were to happen between us, I could essentially come home to be locked out. And I'd be throwing my money at something that wouldn't be considered my asset for years. But his thinking is that it's only my legal right to the property at stake and that I should be willing to trust that nothing will happen between us for the lack of legal claim to be an issue during the duration of our mortgage. I just feel that legally speaking, this can't be the best arrangement. So, please, what are some options here? I feel like, even for him, it can't be the best legal route to have someone he's not married to living in and financially contributing to what would be his dwelling in his ideal scenario. Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:19 AM PDT I am in Indiana and she is in Kentucky. We met and had sex about a month ago, no other contact since then. She took a test and it came out positive yesterday. Her initial message was that she is going to abort the pregnancy, but due to cost and the way Kentucky handles abortions, she is now opting to carry the baby full term and then give it up for adoption. She has already spoken to a lawyer with an agency about doing this. She stated that she doesn't want me to have anything to do with any of the process. She is going to put "father unknown" on the birth certificate and doesn't want to contact me again. I am still trying to wrap my head around all of this, but what can I do in this situation? I offered to pay the entire cost of the abortion consultation and procedure, but she did not accept that. That is fine, it is totally her choice. She specifically stated that she doesn't want me to have any options about what she is going to do with the child. I just don't really like the idea of a child that I, albeit unintentionally, had a part in creating just being given up. Do I have any say in the adoption or any rights to decide if I want to take the child when it is born? In the back of my mind, I want to be a part of my child's life. It does not matter to me if she doesn't want anything to do with it. Is this grounds that I need to contact a lawyer or something that can be decided between her and I? I'm really just trying to still process all of this. I have never even had a pregnancy scare with someone before. I have no ill will at all towards this person, I don't believe she has any towards me. I just want to figure out everything that I can about this situation. Thank you for the help. Sorry if I am rambling a bit. EDIT: We have been talking back and forth all day now. I told her my plans of taking steps to take custody of the child rather than put it up for adoption. She said that was not how she expected me to react and is reconsidering that choice now, that maybe since I am wanting to take care of the child she is considering being a part of its life as well. I'm not sure how I feel about that just yet, but I guess that doesn't matter legally how I feel. She has a doctors appointment scheduled for the 17th of this month to make sure the pregnancy is viable. [link] [comments] |
Landlord is withholding our security deposit because of damage from our dog…we’ve never had a dog. Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:22 AM PDT Our location is Washington State. We're a college group of 6 tenants. Our lease ended on May 31st. On June 1st, I met with the landlord and showed him the most significant damage to the house, a ripped section of carpet in my bedroom, and told him I would personally pay to have that carpet replaced. He said he wouldn't charge us for that damage as he was planning to replace the carpet in that room anyway. He also said he would return our security deposit within the legal time period of 3 weeks. The last tenant in the house (who was subletting from the new tenants) moved out last week, so yesterday (July 5th) the landlord contacted us about damages. He is now saying he will deduct the carpet damage from the security deposit, due to the fact that the damage was "due to dog scratching." He said the cleaners exposed urine stains under a blacklight, and also that a dog bowl and a tennis ball were left in the laundry room. We really don't have, and have never had, a dog. I'll admit the damage to the carpet looks bad for us because the carpet and the foam underpad are both ripped out in chunks. (Edit: the carpet is only ripped in one spot, where it came out from under the metal transition strip in the doorway. It also got caught on furniture when we were moving out, which made it worse.) However, at least one of the stains he is referring to is a beer stain. I have no idea where the dog bowl and tennis ball came from. I do know the new tenants were storing some stuff in the adjacent garage, including a bin with a blue dog bowl on top, but if that's what he's referring to that isn't our stuff. I sent text message recaps of the June 1st walkthrough to my other housemates, which state that the landlord said the carpet was fine and he would send our deposit within 3 weeks. I have a video of the room from when I moved in (though I don't know if I zoomed in enough on the carpet stains for that to be helpful). I also have screenshots of a conversation with the new tenants about the dog stuff, where they said the bowl was for an Anything But Cups party. My housemate has emailed the landlord back denying that we have a dog and asking for our full deposit since he's over the 21 day return period. He responded doubling down, and saying he would not refund the full deposit. Is there anything else we can do to get either a refund on his original terms, or a full refund, back? Is it worth going to small claims for this? [link] [comments] |
Selling house to get away from BF Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:59 AM PDT Looking for legal advice for my sister. She is in an abusive relationship and has a 2 year old. Her bf previously served jail time for assaulting her. However, she has no interest in involving the police. What she does want to do is sell her house and move back in with my parents to get away from him. She owns the house, his name is not on it at all. They have no lease agreement, however he has been paying rent to her for 2 years or however long they've been there. Is she able to put her house on the market? Or is there a certain amount of notice she needs to give him first? Any advice or helpful websites/etc. Would be greatly appreciated. We are located in Maryland. [link] [comments] |
Rented a room from someone with aggressive dogs Posted: 06 Jul 2021 10:24 AM PDT I moved to a different state for a new job and was in contact with someone to rent a room at their house. They told me they had dogs and that they would have to get used to me being there, but that they didn't have issues with any of the previous tenants. I've been around all kinds of animals and was open to getting them to warm up to me, but now that I've lived there a couple weeks, I'm noticing how untrained they are. They violently bark at me and try to nip at my legs any time i come home from work or try to leave my room, and will lay right outside my door to guard me from leaving. The homeowner gives them treats when they start getting aggressive because she's trying to distract them, but i'm seeing that they're being rewarded for their behavior. She will also scream at them and throw things at them, which just confuses them more. Long story short, I had to sign a 6 month lease for this room, but if the dogs end up biting me, can i get out of it? I'm in arizona and the lease agreement mentions nothing about the dogs. What if I want to leave before they get a chance to bite me? [link] [comments] |
Neighbour has been harassing me for 18 year and assaulted me last weekend. Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:50 AM PDT My neighbour has been harassing me and my family for 18 years. Last summer he had a crew come in at 5 am to cut down one of our trees after the arborist and the city told him to leave it alone. This was one month to the day after my Dad died. Things escalated over the past year and then on June 30 he was trespassing on my property and when asked to leave he and his wife (both drunk at the time) got in my face while I was in my car, refused to let me out of my car, his wife slapped me in the face and he uttered death threats to me. I am disabled and not a very big guy and he is about 280lbs and her as well. My question is; I pressed charges on both of them and am waiting on a court date, I also went and got a peace bond on both of them and that comes up on the 12th of this month. They often goad me into being angry with him just the other day telling me to commit suicide and they often do things like use a leaf blower to blow dust on clothes on the clothes line and he used to make fires and burn garbage even though they know I have horrible asthma. Can the Peace Bond backfire on me? Will the assault charges and uttering threats charge stick? He also decided to drive drunk that same evening so I called and he got stopped and lost his license. They seem to think the law doesn't apply to them as they have often tried to intimidate me by saying "We have family in law enforcement." Funny enough, my cousin used to be Chief of Police here. I just need some help. I am in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. [link] [comments] |
Someone tripped in my front yard and they want a lot. Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT Hey there, Im getting sued for 100 grand or more. I recieved a nasty letter that two years ago someone tripped due to a protruding piece of metal in the rocks in between my sidewalk and the street out front my house (Sounds like in my city that is considered your property). This person was working for century link which wasn't on my behalf, plus I don't use century link. Now they are claiming I need to pay for all their lost wages and the medical expenses. I called my home insurance and filed a claim followed by providing the law firm suing me the claim details. It sounded like if my insurance doesn't cover all the money they are planning on suing me personally, I don't have a job right now since I'm in school full time and am pretty scared about what this might mean for me and my wife's future. Can someone with some insight on this situation help me think this through and what to expect? [link] [comments] |
Traffic Accident [Texas] - Who is at fault? Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:03 AM PDT I was at a stop sign turning right. I was fully stopped with my signal on, truck coming from the left had it's right turn signal on and was going a speed that seemed reasonable to assume they were turning where I was. I pulled out and they hit the driver door. Am I still at fault because I did not yield until safe to turn or are they for incorrectly signaling? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 06:05 AM PDT I live on a semi-private road in Massachusetts. It is short and gravelly with 4 homes. I'm not sure what semi-private really means for us, but in the past the town has threatened to stop plowing and stop taking trash because of this. It is also not their responsibility to pave - fine. Us homeowners pay to have potholes filled in occasionally by a contractor and my neighbor has taken it upon himself to add speedbumps via contractor. We pay property taxes of course. The end of the road faces the public elementary school and many parents will park their cars on our street to wait for and pick up their child. the other end of the road connects to a private road that has faced the same plowing and trash pick-up threats. The town sent a letter requesting overhanging tree branches be removed from our road and the pivate road in 10 days, or they will stop trash pickup. Homeowners on the private road have already started doing so. The issue for us on our semi-private road is that the overhanging branches do not come from any trees on our property. It is overhang from corner houses that face either the private road or public road on either end of our street. The question is, if these corner houses don't agree to cut back their branches, what can we do? I imagine it would be unpleasant for them to potentially pay hundreds of dollars for someone to come and trim their trees if it's their responsibility. There's also no guarantee they would allow us to handle the overhang ourselves. One cornerhouse has graciously cut back the overhang on our road because they face the private road and had to cut back those branches as well. I don't know how one would approach this if it overhang in to their yard. The fact that it's overhang into the street makes it more complicated. [link] [comments] |
Question about disability accommodation Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:09 AM PDT Until recently I worked for a museum for about 9 months. I have a physical disability that causes chronic pain to premise. During my interview, I requested that I be able to use the chairs at each gallery to take frequent breaks, which I did for most of my employment with no issues. After a new exhibit was introduced, the chairs were removed. I asked repeatedly to get chairs back but they said there was nothing that could be done, so I had to voluntarily quit due to my disability worsening. Was this discrimination? Should I have done something else? Located in FL. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:17 PM PDT I live in a small trailer park in TX. I have mental health issues and no one will take me seriously. Nothing is lacking in my intelligence, but bc I have mental issues, no one is taking me seriously. While I was in the hospital recently, my landlady came into my trailer took my pet rooster ( yes, I love animals) and left with him. When ever she talks to anyone other than myself or my wife, she's cordial. When she starts talking to us she yells and is very argumentative with us even when we agree with her. Extremely disrespectful to us. We pay $725 a month for our trailer, we know the ppl whom lived here before us and they paid $600. We actually pay the MOST expensive rent out of everyone in the trailer park. Since no one will take us serious, is there anything we can do short of move out? [link] [comments] |

How to Check if There Are Warrants for Arrest? Is it Safe to Do So? Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:23 AM PDT I'm an American living outside of the US and have been stuck here for the last year. I am able to fly home to the US now and would really like to see my family, but am very paranoid that there could be a warrant for my arrest. I'm presently incapable of discerning whether this is pure fantasy or a legitimate concern because I suffer from paranoia, which got much worse after the covid lockdowns. Knowing some basic legal information could really help me. Would a warrant for arrest be publicly available information or if it would be concealed so that I wouldn't be deterred from going to the airport? If warrants are public information, how can I find out if there is one for me? Is there a website or phone number I should call? If there is a phone number I have to call, is it safe to do so myself? I would like to check for Federal warrants, and the states of California, Indiana, and Texas. [link] [comments] |
[USA-CA] Who Owns Pictures of Me? Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:24 PM PDT USA California/DC Hi there, I worked at a company which I have since left to start my own business. At that company, we had an event where a photographer came by and took photos/headshots. On my company's website (the one I started after leaving former company) I have photos of myself that were taken from my old company's event. There are some solo photos of me, and then there are some photos with other coworkers where the background is blurred. I just got an email from former company saying I have to remove the photos from my website immediately. What's the legal standing here? Do I have to comply and remove photos of myself from my site? I live in California, pictures were taken in Washington DC. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:56 PM PDT Hi all - So my wife went to the dentist about 2 months back following a year+ gap due to COVID and they told her she needed a crown and an inlay. She had the work done but almost immediately felt intense pain from the tooth where the inlay was done. She went in to ask for it to be looked at, the dentist took a cursory glance and said to give it some time to heal. It continued to cause her intense pain - to the point that she almost crashed her car due to vibrations from the road - and she went in again, telling them that she was sure it was not healing and asking to be evaluated for a root canal. The dentist refused to perform x-rays and simply tapped on her tooth and said that her reactions didn't seem like it was enough pain to be worrisome. Eventually, the pain did go away. Until last week when it came back with a vengeance. She felt a large bump in the gum right above where the work was done. She went back to the dental practice but had another dentist look at it who immediate saw it was abscessed and referred her to an endodontist. The endodontis confirmed that it's abscessed and that the pain only subsided because the root is dead. He said that the drilling for the onlay was done too close to the root and that the resulting swelling caused it to die. She now needs a root canal and will need to have a full crown to replace the onlay. The issue is that the original procedures left her with only $150 on her insurance. Meaning almost all of this is coming out of pocket - and all of it is because of work that was done improperly the first time and then when there were complications, she was ignored. We had also heard - anecdotally and after the fact - that the dentisty who worked on her has been increasingly known for sloppy work. We are not destitute, we can afford this - luckily - but we are not happy to have to pay thousands extra and have her go through increased stress and trauma because a job was done poorly the first time. Do we have any recourse to try to get the original work refunded or the new work covered since it's a result of a mistake? [link] [comments] |
