Is there a policy to insure tools if you are a mechanic? Insurance

Is there a policy to insure tools if you are a mechanic?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:46 PM PDT

My husband is a tech. In his 20 year career he's acquired about $60k in tools and his tool boxes. He is a reformed SnapOn junkie.

There was a fire and then a burst pipe at his workplace. The damage to the workplace was pretty severe, but luckily the bay with his tools was spared.

We found out that the owners insurance doesn't cover the tech's tools because they are owned by the tech.

Is there some sort of policy we should be looking for?

Some thoughts: -it would be nice if it covered theft as well as damage. -my husband is fanatical about caring for his tools so all except consumable SnapOn purchases are in good working order. -toolboxes alone are about $20k, but they have plastic components that could be melted by fire and render them useless.

I'm sure I'll have follow up questions and I'll be around to ask/answer.

    Thank you, jsat.

    Edit:sorry bot, I'm in Wisconsin.

    Auto insurance predicament

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 01:13 AM PDT

I got in a wreck Tuesday 7/6/21. I went through a green light and got hit pretty hard on my rear passenger door by a guy turning right on red. No injuries to the other guy or myself, luckily.

I called the cops and he gave the responding officer a random insurance card. Turns out he was driving his sons car (who he also lives with). He claims he has insurance and its legit but obviously I have my doubts. He was cited for the accident and I'm waiting to hear from his son or his insurance company. I have his son's phone number and their adress if need be.

On my end now, I pull up my allstate app and it says that my policy lapsed on 6/9/21.......I had no idea. Thinking it was an autopay error I chaulked it up to that. I called my agent the next day and he said, "its not an autopay issue its a DUI issue". I was charged with, physical control of a motor vehicle on, 6/21/20. The case was settled and i paid all dues on 12/21/20. My agent says he notified me in April that i was being terminated by corporate...but I can't find a shred of evidence that supports that. ALSO, physical control in Ohio, is a non-moving, no point violation. I'm not sure if that matters but its definitely not a DUI/OVI there's a clear difference.

I'm going to call this morning to customer service to try a backdate and back pay deal. But my main question is: is it possible that I'll be charged with a "driving without insurance" charge? Do I have a leg to stand on with pleading my case to allstate? Do I need to stress about it since it wasn't my fault?...I just want everything to be kosher on my end before I figure out his situation.

Advice Needed regarding Personal Property Insurance Claim

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 04:52 AM PDT

After living in our home (in New York state) for 21 years we had a fire. There was a lot of smoke damage. The contents of our home needed to be removed. We hired a mitigation company to remove the contents and they also worked with a dry cleaner to clean a large number of my wife's clothing. The cost of the dry cleaning and contents mitigation was $16,500. In computing the amount of reimbursement this cost was subtracted from the value of our personal property.

    Should this be the case?

Is this the standard operating procedure to subtract the costs for dry cleaning the clothes and the removal of the damaged items from the personal property value?

    More Info:

The contents of our home was valued at $70,000. My wife had many items of clothing cleaned and this cost $6200. The insurance company paid for this and the mitigation costs of $10,300 associated with removing and documenting the personal property. The document that I received from the Insurance company calculates the reimbursement at $54,000. This is the $70,000 value of our contents minus the dry cleaning cost and the mitigation cost. I guess I was a little surprised that they subtracted the cost of the dry cleaning and the cost of the mitigation from the value of the contents. I have tried to look at our policy, however because we've had our policy for so long I have only found renewal notices through the online portal.

    Thank you.

Mazda3 2018 Rear-ended! End of our ride together?!

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:28 PM PDT

    Hello -

My Mazda3 was rear ended two days while on a freeway by a Jeep Compass. The driver did not notice traffic suddenly slowing down on the lane adjacent to the exit lane and ended up rear ending our car while going at about speed limit which is 65 miles/hr. I was slowing down and so my car took the full brunt of the collision. The driver did not brake. My wife and I escaped unscathed, as far as we know and concerned the pains might creep on us, we were and are very shaken and angry at the gross negligence by the Jeep causing the collision.

The driver of the Jeep Compass, did pull in after the exit and took full responsibility and apologized for the accident, he acknowledged it was mistake to the police officer who came by to make the report. While that helped, I'm very sad and angry for the driver's negligence. My Mazda3 has been with me for the last three years, I purchased it new with the full package, so its been a little disappointing.

My insurance company towed the car as it was unsafe for us to drive it further, the evaluation came back today and its been estimated that the car can be repaired for sub $10K, the report did not call out any structural damage to the frame or the chassis. I find that very surprising and am very concerned since the Mazda faced the full brunt of the impact, while its great that the car can be repaired I won't be able to fully trust that the car is structurally sound for my family and I to drive around in.

I'm looking for your input on what the next steps should be, the resale value for my car is pretty good right now (mileage below 40K miles) due to the used car shortage so I want to make sure that I make the best decision when it comes to the safety of my family.

How do I handle this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Freaking tf out

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:21 PM PDT

I am a landlord for a home in wa state and purchased a landlords policy through allstate. I moved to Texas a week later and signed a year long lease there myself. Allstate cancelled my landlords policy for no reason other than "your rental property is ineligible for this replacement cost policy" the same week I moved. My insurance agent had no issues setting it up, I have no idea what to do. Why the hell would they randomly cancel it? Also without any notice...

    Car insurance question.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:57 PM PDT

My car flooded, idk if it's actually considered flooded but water went inside, there's a small puddle on the floor on one side. Idk yet if the engine or anything like that is damaged or not properly working anymore. I haven't been able to check. My area is still flooded and I can't really get to my car.

From the back the water looks really close to the muffler, water lever has since gone down but it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and the next. Would it be worth it to claim under the insurance? I have full coverage. Or would it be possible/better to change out the whole carpet so I'm not driving a stinky car?

I'll provide more info if needed.

    TIA.

    ETA: I'm in Texas, USA.

    Is this insurance fraud?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:45 AM PDT

I work at a baseball facility and we had a flood in February. We got a massive payout from the insurance company. There was talks of replacing all the turf, new flooring, new furniture, new displays, etc. None of that is getting replaced and the owners are looking for a buyout and running with the money. Every thing they claimed is being "salvaged". Is this fraudulent? Can it be reported? They are slimy people and have the money to buy their way out of trouble.

What type or combo of insurance to cover loss of income and medical expense scenario?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:48 PM PDT

I have a job. I am covered by medical insurance via my company. I have life insurance privately, so my family is covered if I pass away.

But for example if I get cancer that is bad enough that I cant work anymore, there is a high risk that my company lets me go eventually.

In this case, the disability insurance I have from my company is lost. I also lose medical insurance.

Still I would have to pay oncology etc. and cover living expenses - what kind of insurance coverage do people get in this situation to cover medical expenses and living expenses?

PS my wife is unable to cover my loss of income.
PPS location bot is on the case - I am in the US/Oregon

    Medicare Secondary Payer Recovery Process?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:53 PM PDT

I was in an auto accident in Ohio and the other driver was found completely at fault. I've been working with their insurance company to have my medical bills addressed and I'm looking at closing the claim if they will compensate me appropriately. Today I received a brochure labeled "Medicare Secondary Payer Recovery Process" and a letter requesting I send information related to my medicare insurance and the accident. I'm not sure what this organization is or what purpose they serve. The definition I found is "the Benefits Coordination & Recovery Center (BCRC) is responsible for the recovery of mistaken liability, no-fault, and workers' compensation claims where the beneficiary must repay Medicare."

The claim is being handled by the at-fault driver's insurance company so I'm not sure what part this BCRC plays or why they need to be involved. Yes I am a medicare recipient but I'm not asking medicare to pay for any of the related hospital bills - those are being handled with the insurance claim. Can someone advise what purpose this organization plays and why they need to be involved, or if this can be disregarded?

Should I file a claim? No fault water damage in apt.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:01 PM PDT

BLUF: I'm unsure whether I should proceed with filing a claim based on:

    1. Whether the price is worth it?

    2. Will this claim show up on any record?

    3. Any other impact this may cause that I'm not considering/is unaware of.

    ///

Details: The apartment above me had a stove fire which resulted in the firefighters flooding their apartment with water. This water leaked through to the apartments in the floors beneath it. My apartment is immediately below the apartment that had the fire, so it got the most water.

Everyone in the building is required to have renter's insurance and it seems like I have obviously no fault (please correct me if I'm wrong).

The purchase value sum of my items that got water damage is $1500, but replacement cost value would likely be $3000-$4000 because everything was bought at least 50% off (except for my mattress and vacuum).

Aside from rent, the only other money I spend is $100-200 per month. So, replacing these items would cause a huge hit to my budget. Technically though, I can afford it.

Half of me questions why I pay for insurance if I can't depend on it for something like this (that is, it isn't a catastrophic loss, but it's still a good amount of money). Especially considering that I really couldn't have done anything to change the situation. I realize that may be the wrong perspective considering other impacts a claim may have.

    ///

I am also concerned that this information might become record somewhere my family has access to. I haven't told them because they'd worry.

But, I do legally own a home with my sister (both of our names are on it equally).

Could me filing a claim impact insurance for that house? As far as I know, the insurance is a different company. I also don't know if my name is listed on whatever insurance it does have (does this matter?).

Thanks for reading all of that.

This is my first time renting and facing an insurance situation, so I appreciate all of the advice I can get.

    I am in Boston, MA.

Also, my renter's insurance is with Assurant at a $130 annual premium:

    Property Coverage

Personal Property $15,000 (Deductible: $100 All Perils)

    Settlement Type Replacement Cost

    Loss Of Use

    Additional Living Expense $3,000

    Liability

    Personal Liability $300,000

    Medical Payment $1,000

    Property Damage to Others $500

    Optional Endorsement(s) You Purchased

    Water Backup Included

I’m not sure if I’m in the right place… issues with Delta Dental or is it my provider?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:02 PM PDT

So I live in southern CA. I am 24 years old, still a dependent under my dads Delta Dental HMO (delta care USA). With that I should have coverage for braces with a copay of $1950 and then I have to pay out of pocket for X-rays. This January I became dusky insurance with Delta Dental from my employer (the same as my dads employer) but I have opened a PPO just to help cover more cost since I needed a lot of work prior to get braces (mind you the PPO has no orthodontic coverage). Anyways, March comes around I get a pre authorization for my braces pre approved for the $1950, with that approval go to the ortho get my braces on. They accepted my copay authorization, gave me a contract which I signed stating that price, got my braces on and I went home. Here it is now July, the Ortho office tells me that have yet to receive payment for the braces from the insurance. So they tried submitting another claim for it, but it keeps getting sent to my PPO not the HMO so it keeps getting declined and shows I have to pay full price of $6,2000. Anytime I call delta dental (delta care USA) they've stated that they've sent over the necessary paper work to my provider for them to finish the claim. I'm not sure what I should do, my providers billing dept seems either to stupid to submit the documents properly or are they just trying to get more money from me?

Any advice would be helpful. I haven't called my PPO because I'm not sure if they can help. Both plans are with delta dental (delta care USA and delta dental premier)

Multiple parked vehicles hit by uninsured driver

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 03:58 PM PDT

So this whole thing has been an ordeal. I'm a bit frazzled trying to figure out what I should do. I live in Iowa

This happened roughly a month ago, maybe a little more. I'm prepping for a shower about midnight (I can't remember if it was Friday or Saturday night) and my wife calls out to me that someone just hit our neighbors vehicle, and ran the scene, should she call the police? Of course! So by the time I get redressed and down to the street, a different neighbor, and my brother (who lives down the street) were standing around the vehicles. Driver had hit the motorcycle my neighbor owned, plowed into their suv. My brother had heard the crash and saw the house the guy ran to. Guy then sends his girlfriend out (there's no mistaking the two of them, and two people saw him run off) and have her say she was driving. About this time the police arrive, and start gathering some statements while my wife goes and wakes the neighbors to let them know the news. While glancing at the suv, the cop notices skid marks under my jeep and the front end of the neighbors suv is just caved in. Oh shit, they clearly were going more than 25mph to have moved mine three feet further than it had been. The police finish taking statements, give no breathalyzer, don't search the vehicle, and allow them to take it with them that night. (They got a trailer somewhere for it) A week and a half of bombarding the PD trying to get a police report, we find out the cop that had taken the statements quit immediately at the end of his shift and someone else is having to redo/reinvestigate. So all in all where we are now, my deductible is higher than the damages, and I'm wondering if I'm just hosed. I'm moving eight hours away in less than a month, so trying to sue seems like a joke at this point. Am I better off just getting rid of it and writing it all off as a loss. It's petty but I don't want this guy getting off Scott free.

M&A Insurance Roles? Broker vs Underwriting?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Are these careers something to pursue? I see interviews for M&A insurance roles. Mainly Reps & Warranties for M&A deals. I see 2 sides to these roles. There's the broker roles at Aon, Willis, Marsh, Lockton, etc. On the other hand, there's the carrier roles at Vale, AIG, Euclid, CFC, etc.

Is it worth becoming an underwriter for these deals? Is it a smart career path? I see these guys are in the $150K-$200K range? Alternatively, is the broker side better? Are they making more money? Commission per deal? Do we see this product being around for the long term? I see a majority of deals will look to getting Reps & Warranties Insurance.

How does genetics testing affect coverage.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:19 AM PDT

Without getting into too much detail, I'm being treated for recent bouts of a condition for which a cause is unknown. So far just about all known causes have been ruled out. Because I'm adopted and have no knowledge of my family history, a hereditary cause has not been ruled out. The doctor is going to schedule me for genetics testing. He did vaguely mention something about how it may affect insurance. I was under the impression that in the U.S., one could not be denied coverage for an existing condition. So my question is if they do find that I have a genetic marker for a certain condition and in the future do end up getting said condition, in what way if any will my health insurance be affected? TIA Edit:. I'm in the state of Massachusetts, united States.

US Health Advisors and mistreating advisors and dishonest company including gay bashing by senior management that would be titled Divison Head

Rant: I Coin the Term "Studied Incompetence" to Describe the way Customer Service Representatives of my Health Care Insurer Handle Calls.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:30 PM PDT

This has not always been the case, but lately, it has been taking multiple calls to get anything done. One issue with a 2020 claim has required 6 calls -about 5 hours on the phone - so far and it's still in process. Another has taken 4 calls with no end in sight. Customer service reps tell me things that I know are not true. But I can call back and go through the phone tree to get another rep who knows the answer and will hang up on me after 20 minutes and putting me on hold. Reps tell me they will do something and they'll call me back in 2-3 weeks, but they never make the call. Or they tell me they have progressed my issue and it should be resolved in 30 days - but I call back 45 days later only to find that the issue is still where it sat at the beginning of my last phone call.

I ask myself why this kind of thing happens and the only answer I can find is that insurance companies don't make money by paying claims, so they five a low priority to customer service.

Does anyone else have this kind of experience?

First auto/ renters insurance advice and help.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:29 PM PDT

I'm looking to get an auto and renters bundle I got a lot of different price points for a bunch of different packages. I know there's a lot of "what if's and who knows" but overall, I just wanted to get some general advice and feedback regarding these plans.

Some basic details that may be useful for this:

    1. Moving to Virginia next month, this is where the insurance state location.
    2. I currently don't have insurance, I don't drive constantly enough to warrant it. And if I do drive long distances, usually a family member is with me.
    3. The car will be "owned" by me (my parents don't need it so they let me take it).
    4. Granted, I don't drive much, but when I do, I can't say I've gotten any felonies, tickets, accidents, etc.
    5. For renters insurance, I need a min of 100k liability coverage.

    Starting of with auto insurance:

    1. BI/ PD/ UM - Would 50k/100k be a good balance or would it be better to go higher (or even lower to 25k/50k)? When talking with the liberty mutual rep, she recommended the highest tiers (250k/500k) but I feel like that's just way too high. But at the same time, I don't know what kinds of costs I'm looking at for damage.
    2. Medical/ income loss - I think I have very decent health insurance and that my company is pretty good with things like paid days off and what not, so I'm not sure if these are necessary.
    3. Comprehensive/ Collision deductible - For these, should I go between 1k - 2k? Or would it be better to have a lower comp and higher collision? Either way, my emergency fund is pretty well set up so covering a higher deductible isn't a huge issue.
    4. Roadside and rental - I feel like these aren't necessary. Ideally, I hopefully don't get so unlucky that I'm getting a flat or in an accident every month where it would actually be cheaper to add these services in the long run. I hope...

    Next is renters:

    1. Again, I need a 100k liability minimum, not sure if more is needed. Ideally, I don't plan on starting any fires or floods.
    2. Personal Property - Is it worth getting a high enough value to cover all items or better to get lower and then pay the rest out of pocket? I don't really have a lot of stuff to cover tbh, from most expensive to least, it would be like desktop setup, tv, a few mechanical keyboards, and my furniture. That's about it. Everything else is easy to replace.
    3. Is medical worth it? I have no idea about this.

Three prices I have on hand are progressive ($506.00 for 6 months), liberty mutual ($2,418 for 12 months), and amica ($2820 for I believe 6 months). All three used the coverage plans but idk, I'm really surprised that progressive is so much cheaper than the rest? Even geico and state farm were much higher. Is there some catch with progressive I'm missing (like when I get the actual quote, it'll jump up)?

    Thanks!

    Somebody hit my car...now what?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:32 AM PDT

Hey guys, long story short, I was coming back from the hospital and while I was minding my own business, a car comes up out of nowhere and tries getting into my lane on a busy highway. This person hit my car and there's a huge scratch on the rear side of the vehicle. I am already dealing with numerous problems (widow mom has cancer, I am working multiple jobs while dealing with health problems) so I should've been the last person that something like this happened to.

What should I do? The person stopped and we exchanged info but I don't want my premium going up because of somebody else's mistakes. What do I do??? I'm in Indiana btw.

    Is this a fishy letter?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:15 PM PDT

To preface this, I'm a new driver with no experience dealing with insurance. I was involved in a minor fender bender 8 months ago. A police report was filed, and I gave the other driver my insurance information (they wrote it down and took a picture). At the time I was driving my fathers car, and I've had no other incidents with his car other than that. Today we received a letter from a law office regarding a claim that was filed, which I'll include a link to. What stands out to me is:

    A) they are asking for my insurance info, despite me giving it to them at the time of the accident and it being clearly listed on the police report we both obtained

    B) more notably, the date of the loss is listed as more than three months after the accident. There's also zero identifying information about the incident in the letter.

    C) this may just be something that's outside of my understanding, but the total loss is absolutely outrageous for the damage to their car. It's listed as $5,335.97, but the only visible damage to their vehicle was a minuscule shift in their rear bumper. It was an older vehicle, and even being extremely generous I can't see how that kind of cost could possibly occur from an incident like what happened.

    https://ibb.co/7ttBbVm

I don't know if this is important or not, but I wasn't listed as at fault on the accident. I know this because I later applied to be a doordash driver, and their background check listed the accident as no fault. Our insurance also never went up from it.

Avoiding premium increase on auto insurance

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:13 PM PDT

New driver here, so, sorry for asking a trivial question.

Recently, I didn't see a parking block and ran over it. The bottom surface of the car was damaged. It's just surface damage.

I don't want my monthly premium to increase in this case, but if I accept fault, my premium would increase.

What can I do to make sure it doesn't? Can I claim in some way that fault wasn't mine?

    Out of state surgery-accident

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:40 AM PDT

My grandson (15) is visiting his mom for the summer. He was on his mini bike and was hit by a truck and snapped his collarbone. This was his fault he was riding on the sidewalk and the truck backed out of the driveway. He needs surgery to put the bone together its a very bad break. He is covered by his dads insurance in Ohio. They said he is fully covered for the ER visit and the surgical consult visit. BUT must travel from Illinois where mom is (Northern Illinois ) to Ohio (southeast corner) for surgery. the 10 minute drive to the surgeon was terrible he almost passed out (he had taken his pain meds 30 min prior to the drive) I dont know how they can expect him to drive 9 hours back to Ohio in that condition.. As well as the bone is very close to popping out of the skin.. That will open up a whole other issue.. Is there something we can say to the insurance co to let him have the surgery in Illinois ?

I want to get my own policy but I don't know if I'm still gonna be listed on my dad's account since I still live with him. Will the insurance companies keep me on, both, his and mine policy, or just mine?

    Edit: New York State.
