How to go from idea to MVP!

I wanted to share with others that this might be useful for. Especially if someone has been sitting on an idea for awhile but can't seem to progress.

This mainly pertains to tech startups, but can to others as well!

I just launched my start up a couple weeks ago and we went from idea to mvp super fast. But it wasn't my first idea. My other ideas I sat on for a long time or didn't get to MVP.

    Here's my tips/suggestions:

1.) Be realistic with your idea. If you're going to be a solo-founder, like I am, you're going to need to be realistic on what you can achieve. It's possible to have an idea that you can't build, and get someone to build it but it's extremely hard. You can also learn to code. It's always an option, but it takes a minimum 6 months to be decent , a year or two to be proficient. If you have a CoFounder it helps tremendously.

2.) Have an idea you can make. This ties on to #1. I learnt here that it is possible to work on your idea to a validated prototype within a short span. All you have to do is have an idea that you're able to build right now!! For me, it was websites and writing articles. So I was able to build my startup within a week once I came up with the idea. My last idea was a full fledged first responder app that I was WAY over my head on. I couldn't get any developer to tag along and help me and I didn't have the resources or capabilities to get it up and running. I highly recommend not paying for someone to build your app, it's very expensive and may not come out how you want it.

3.) Do not wait. Build & launch. There is no point in waiting once you have an idea. The whole point of a startup is to grow fast. Once you can build your startup , do it right away and then launch your MVP. Start marketing on social media for free, and get ready to launch on product hunt.

4.) Grow. Once you've launched and start marketing your startup, continue to grow and stay committed. The biggest part is already done, you finally built something and launched! Is there a strong chance of failure? Yes! But at least you finally built something!
Hope this helps someone and gets you motivated to finally build that start up of your dreams.

Debating if i should call it quits.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:28 AM PDT

Ive been running my web design and seo company for a year and some change now. I have gotten clients from small mom and pop to celebrities. I have ranked websites #1 for clients with seo and ran succesful ppc ads for major companies and have 5 stars on google. I have built a good portfolio but i cant seem to land clients. I email and call. But i either dont get a response, its too expensive or just not interested. I have the cheapest prices in my area and am pretty flexible with my prospects for pricing. I thought once i built a good portfolio it would be easier to get clients. The people that do reach out cant comprehend the time and effort seo or web design takes even when i explain my pricing and the process. They still ask for discounts or just lowball offers. I get it everyone wants a deal but still Idk what else to do to get clients. 😕 I feel like calling it quits because i cant land new clients. Idk what im doing wrong. Any advice is helpful! Id appreciate it.

EDIT #1: WOW truly. My notifications have been blowing up like crazy! I was nervous posting my predicament on here! Due to doing something similar on a discord server i was on and it was a disrespectful group i guess. I wish i could reply to everyone! So i will implement what people have mentioned and also rebrand my company. Thank you again to everyone that commented and pm'd me!

I had one of our employees come to me today sobbing because he doesn’t want to work overtime anymore. I don’t want to lose him, should I let him work 8hrs when everyone else is working 10?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:16 PM PDT

We have been extremely busy and have our employees working 10hr days to try and get caught up. One of our guys who has been doing very well came to me today with an ultimatum: either he gets to work 8hrs or he's quitting. He's very talented, but I don't want anyone thinking he is getting special treatment. We usually work 8hrs but have some deadlines to meet so have been having everyone work 10. Everyone else seems to enjoy the extra money but he said it's making him hate his job. Should we let him work 8? I'm afraid it will cause some of the guys to get upset that he isn't working what they are...

Best (free?) software for tracking parts inventory?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:23 PM PDT

I am launching a product line that involves me sourcing numerous smaller components from several different suppliers, compiling the parts into sets, and then selling the sets.

Im currently doing this "by hand" using several excel spreadsheets but it's time that I find a more streamlined solution.

Does anyone know of any such software? Or what this type of software is even called?

How do you go about firing someone? I have never had to do it but this guys needs to go.

edit: I am also short staffed so I am considering having him keep working until I can find a replacement

edit: Removed any specific situation identifying information.

Can I buy a car as a business tax deduction for my super small business?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:25 AM PDT

My small business only is making $3k-$5k a year. It's more of a hobby now but I hope to turn it into something bigger this year. But do I qualify to purchase a Tesla using my EIN number? Or do I not make enough for a tax business deduction? Its been a little over a year since I started my business.

    employee handbook

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 02:30 AM PDT

With a growing staff, it's probably important to finally make a handbook/safety guidelines.

I'm sure I could find a freelancer to do it, but would much prefer somebody local to come in and take a look at the place as we form the handbook. What person would I be looking for to help me do this?

What To Talk About In The First Meeting With A Prospect

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 10:43 PM PDT

✔️ You have been working hard to book a meeting with a prospective customer. You are super excited.

✔️ You can't wait to tell them about all the bells and whistles of your product or service.

    🛑 Stop right there!

The first part of your meeting, or even the entire meeting, is Discovery. It is about the customer and the problem that they are trying to solve.

Typical conversation framework of a discovery stage is:

    • What are you doing today?
    • What is not working?
    • What do you want instead?

Only once you establish what exactly they are trying to achieve, you can offer your solution.

PS: End your meeting by agreeing on the next step and by scheduling the next meeting with your prospect

Purchasing a family business, NEED HELP

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:24 AM PDT

    good day everyone,

so I've been working for my family business for a while now and my family wants to sell it to me, the challenge is that it's too substantial of an amount for me to pay up front and also too substantial of an amount for my family to finance it to me.

    a friend of the family suggested to work with a Banker who can finance the purchase;

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever been in that same situation, hoping for experienced guidance / "do's and don'ts", perhaps an alternative?

ask me questions if you need clearer information!!

Thanks for the help in advance!!

    Short term internet options?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:21 PM PDT

Opening a store that might only be around for six months so looking for internet options where we won't have to enter into a long term contract. This is a retail store so we have to have consistent internet and want to be able to offer internet to customers. Anyone had success getting a monthly contract with Comcast? Are there other options I'm not thinking of?

    Sole Proprietor LLC Taxes

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:06 PM PDT

I'm a little confused on how taxes work for a sole proprietor LLC. Assuming I have a regular job as well that puts me in the 24% tax bracket, is this how taxes would work?

    LLC Revenue: $100,000 LLC Expenses: $50,000 LLC Profit: $50,000 Self Employment Tax (15.3%): $7650 Income Tax (24%): $42350 * 0.24 = $10164 Net Income: $32186

Is income tax based on the value after the self employment tax is deducted as laid out above?

Also, if I were to open a SEP IRA would I be able to invest 20% of the total LLC profit?

Offered to partner on a hot franchise

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:05 PM PDT

My father in law owns one store of a very popular, en Vogue dessert franchise. He just got the green light to open one near where my wife and I grew up.

We would have to move 3 states away (from Utah to Washington)(coincidentally where all of our family now lives).

But I get 15%, a salary and rights to 20% if we open a second franchise together.

This would be on the low end $120-130K of income for me yearly at that level but could be upwards of 250K if it paces with his current store.

This seems like a once in a lifetime opportunity. What does everyone here think?

Advertising while being a broke teen?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 11:07 PM PDT

So it's basically what the title reads... I own a clothing brand uhm... I've had it for over a year now! To be honest I'm a junior in high school and I have no legitimate income nor am I able to secure a job where I can become financially stable to the point where I can advertise using paid methods... I've tried everything in the book! I made a tiktok and I've literally tried uploading videos and I barely get 5-15 views max and I get zero clicks on my website... I tried Instagram advertising and that went tits up.. I have a Instagram account and I've posted so much on there but all my pictures get 20 likes max? Again... Zero clicks or orders on my website.. I started my brand to not only support myself but support others and I always insisted on giving away to charity and I wanna make that a reality but... I'm basically giving up at this point... I don't know what to do I don't know how to advertise. This is kinda my final shot before I call it quits so I really need all the help I can get. Thank you for your time and I hope to see your responses!

Are all invoicing programs these days subscription based? Alternatives to Quickbooks

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 07:43 AM PDT

Our company has always been a bit low-tech (I have machines much older and I am) so our customer management and invoicing needs have always been simple. We had been using a 2013 version of
Quickbooks Desktop up until recently. We looked and found the latest non-subscription version of QB's software and bought it thinking, "if it's new, it will do everything as before plus a few new things"...Boy was I wrong. We have a few (less than 20) items for which we offer a quantity discount which we had managed before through "price levels" in Quickbooks, but when I opened "price levels" to make some adjustments we found them "greyed out." After some research I found they are only available in the subscription version and only at the higher level subscription levels ($2035 per year). The lost sales from ending quantity breaks all together or the cost of manually entering them each time probably wouldn't be worth $2K+ per year and the we really use QB for nothing but invoicing (and occasionally creating a PO for the few suppliers that want an "official" one).

I've looked around and haven't found any alternatives that aren't subscription-based but even with those I'm finding it hard to see if a simple feature like price breaks are part of any software out there.

Anyone else getting frustrated with the push towards everything being subscription these days?

Anyone know any simple invoicing software that supports price breaks for quantity?

    Help finding new employees

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 02:50 PM PDT

    Hi!

I have tried many things to get some help for our landscaping business, but no luck! We have tried:

Zip recruiter, Craigslist, Facebook, NextDoor, and a local ad at post office

We pay higher than the average. Not sure what to do. I looked into Indeed and it was very expensive (about $45 per applicant) so that's not an option for me.

What have been the best ways you have found more talent?

    status tracker to notify clients

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 06:18 PM PDT

is there an app or website to make a status tracker and send a link to the client.

    Example:
I work fixing electronic devices and to avoid the client calling I want a status tracker where I will write the status of my work.

    - device in waiting list.
    - testing or fixing device.
    - work finished.
    -Pick up device.

I thinking of using trello and share a card with the status but apparently the whole board is shared.

    Thanks in advance.

Can I make distributions to a holding company (parent LLC) or a series LLC instead of myself to keep income down?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 04:39 PM PDT

Hey, I'm trying to keep my income low but I want to do it legally. Was wondering if this was a way to do it (again, legally):

Let's say I have two LLCs, "A" and "B." Both of them are solely managed by parent LLC "X." Let's say A profits $100. Then I distribute that $100 from A to X and then have X "invest" that $100 into B.

Because no money was actually distributed to me personally, I am assuming I don't have to claim any of that $100 profit on my tax return. (Is this true?). Does moving this money through the holding company from A to X to B pierce the corporate veil or is everything about this "move" legitimate and would not open me up to extra liabilities?

Not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm wanting to do something like this in the real estate context. Use my rental profits from one LLC property to fund the down payment for the next, but I don't want my income to increase on paper.

Client demanding things outside of contract

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 05:23 AM PDT

Hello everybody. Long time lurker, first time poster and also a very new business owner.

My business started as a side hustle and is now taking more and more of a full time roll, which means more clients and more exposure to…er, situations I guess?

Recently had a a client request my services. We had a consultation, discussed the project, looked at my past work, and I wrote them up a quote for the total work that she wanted. It was a VERY detailed quote too, because I'm a little OCD that way. This is important because it outlined EXACTLY what she would be getting and what she WOULDN'T be getting at that price. She was happy with it so I turned that typed estimate into a typed contract, we both signed and work began.

I deliver the work, but she's out of town so I knew I wouldn't get any feedback for a day or two. So I finally get an email from her a few days later. She's happy with the work, but…she was under the impression that it would be coming with, this, this and this because in my portfolio her item was staged with these items in a photo.

We never discussed any of those items other than me briefly mentioning that they could be add ons if she wanted to pay extra for them. More importantly, she never brought them up, nor mentioned their exclusion from the written quote or ensuing contract. So I tell her, "Oh, a lot of my photos are staged for presentation, but our contract was just for the piece we discussed and I quoted, and said as much."

She writes me back saying it was very much a misunderstanding on her end, but that she was very happy with the project otherwise.

Yesterday rolls around and I'm preparing to send out invoices from last week. I email her again, letting her know that I was attaching my invoice for her remaining balance and that if she had question, let me know.

Well, she fired back with this long winded email late last night saying that she was upset with my response to her prior email, and that even though she misunderstood what she would be receiving (I guess she neglected to read the estimate or contract) she felt that I should in some way rectify it by offering to give her one or so of the items she thought she were getting. Then she goes on to say that she can't "in good conscience" recommend me or use me again if I care so little about customer service, but what like to talk about it.

To say I'm stunned by this is an understatement. Am I in the wrong here for not jumping to give her things that we never talked about, were clearly not apart of the contract and that she took it upon herself to believe she were getting?

On one hand I feel like maybe I should have been more verbally clear, but…I don't know how much more clear a written quote and contract that said she was getting this item, and this item only, could have been. I have no idea how to even respond to this at the moment.

Anybody else been in this situation? How did you handle it? I feel like any response defending myself will seem like I'm being a jerk.
