Does anyone else take naps while WFH? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:26 AM PDT I block 2-2:30 as "focus time" on my calendar but I'm actually snuggling with my blankie and go nap nap. I believe it boosts my productivity for the remainder of the afternoon. [link] [comments]

Big 4 moms - how do you do it?! Posted: 01 Jul 2021 06:55 PM PDT So, I'm flirting with the idea of returning to PwC as an experienced staff in audit, telecommuting. Moms of Big 4, how do you manage? I have a 19 month old at home and don't want to miss out on his life, but at the same time, I feel like I left the firm too early (I was previously a tax associate and quit after less than one year). Am I insane to return to this place? [link] [comments]

From a PIP (Tax) at one B4 to Advisory/Consulting at another: my story Posted: 01 Jul 2021 01:06 PM PDT I see a lot of posts on here about people who were put on PIPs and are very worried about what to do next. I want to share my story so that people can know a PIP isn't the end of your career. I started at B4 firm #1 straight out of undergrad in core tax, working on tax provisions, provision audits, and tax returns. As soon as I started, I knew I didn't love the work. Lots of mind numbing spreadsheet work with technical concepts that I never learned in school. My senior was awesome, but the manager, senior manager/director, and partner were all dicks. That made being in the audit room for 12-14 hours a day totally unbearable. I eventually got off that client, but not before the manager gave me a shitty review. I was then put on another major audit client. Despite trying my hardest, I was not meeting the expectations of my manager & SM/director. This was a brand new client for me and almost the entire team was brand new. The manager & SM/Director got irritated when I asked questions and would only discuss with me what I did wrong, as opposed to actually helping me with the technical concept I was having difficulty grasping. 2 interims came and went and the manager gave me a very bad review. I met with my counseling leader, who informed me that I was being put on a PIP. After I found out about the PIP, I immediately started looking for other jobs. Not long after setting my LinkedIn profile to actively looking, I received tons of messages from different recruiters. I eventually heard from a recruiter with B4 firm #2. I interviewed, got the offer, and negotiated a 21% pay bump and 10% signing bonus. I started in core tax at B4 firm #2. While I consistently got good reviews, I knew it wasn't what I wanted to do the rest of my life. I asked HR about different opportunities, and they put me on a cross LOS project. As soon as I got onto the project, I started networking. I talked to multiple people, one of whom was able to put me in touch with 2 partners in their group. I reached out to both; one of the partners responded pretty quickly with an invite to set up a meeting. I met with her and she had me talk to 5+ other people, mostly seniors in my desired group. After talking to them, the partner decided they were interested, and put me in touch with their national recruiter. The recruiter then put me in touch with approximately 4 more people, including the national practice leader. I had to finish out one final busy season in my old group, but after 4/15, I was officially in Advisory/Consulting. Ever since transferring, I've received almost all positive feedback. Additionally, I've been told that I can expect a nice pay bump because Advisory/Consulting pays more than Tax (well, core tax anyways). The work is fare more interesting, the hours are better, and my team is awesome. I've also been told that I don't need to live near my firm's office because consultants are never in the office - as long as I can travel out of town to a client site when needed I'm good to live wherever. All of this is to say, don't let a PIP define you. A lot of the times, it's shitty managers/SMs/directors who aren't interested in seeing you succeed. It just means you weren't good enough in one person's eyes. It's certainly not a career ender and can even open new doors/avenues that you might not have explored otherwise. Yeah, it may mean the end of your career at that firm, but that's not always a bad thing. Note: I did not go into risk advisory, IT audit, or FDD/TAS. TL;DR: started in core tax at one B4, got put on a PIP, jumped ship to another B4 for a 21% pay increase and eventually networked my way into an advisory/consulting position. [link] [comments]

Anyone have any Great Exodus stories? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 07:12 AM PDT I'll start. At the peak of its staffing (2020 Pre-Covid) the firm had 19 full time preparers which included 7 seniors. Post exodus (likely more to come) the firm has 10 preparers of which 3 are seniors and 2 are first years. 6 preparers left within a month! On a scale of 1 to Enron, how screwed are we? Have you ever done something in a work paper that you DEFINITELY shouldn’t have? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:42 PM PDT You know that feeling. When you can't be bothered to ask your ass hole boss a question because you know they'll just be a jerk or dismiss you? Sometimes it's easier to just pretend the problem isn't there. I wanna know what you guys have done (or seen other people do) I'm talking like hard coding a large number in the TB to make shit tie. Saying there were no issues in sample testing for tests of controls when there DEFINITELY was an issue with one of the samples? Checking a box saying that the team performed certain inquiries or procedures, when we didn't. What have you seen, and was it ever caught? 🤫 [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jul 2021 04:55 AM PDT Anyone work for a family office? Wondering your job title and your total compensation package? I am Controller, Office Manager, copier fixer, etc. I close the books on our multiple companies and our private foundation. I also make the occasional doctor's appointment for the family and send out birthday cards to their friends. Several hundred million in assets. In the same day I may perform investment research, then pay a bill, then search for an air filter for their house. I make $85k, $10k bonus, with $20k in deferred comp each year. No other benefits (no healthcare, no retirement, minimal vacation time). 10 years experience. Feeling underpaid - curious what other are making? A family office is such a unique situation, hard to ask a recruiter for salary comparisons. [link] [comments]
Posted: 01 Jul 2021 10:22 PM PDT what was your training like? how long did it take you to prepare an 1120s return in your first month? how long does it take you now? I am going to be starting next week and from friends who work at the firm they told me there was basically no training. just a quick run down and shadow. how can I practice returns before starting? the software is lacerte. Need some serious career advice Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:58 PM PDT Currently an audit staff at a Big 4 in California. I've honestly had a pretty good experience at my firm so far. I consider myself lucky. Good mix of private and public jobs. On my last job we were very understaffed so I prepared more than half the areas including things like leading all the walkthroughs, ASC 606 revenue testing, and leading the preparation for the 10-k tie out for a public client. Once I get promoted, I'm going to be staffed on a public health, non profit client. Also, the Senior manager basically said that they want to groom me to be the lead senior for this job since the current one is becoming a manager. This audit has 7 entities and the lead senior for it basically works on it for most of the year it looks like. My main concern is, is this going to pigeonhole me into having my main experience be in nonprofit and government? A thought I had was what is the point of being at the big four if I'm not getting SEC reporting or at least normal private company reporting experience? I have always planned on leaving for industry or switching to Faas or fdd so I don't want my future experience to limit my exit opps. If that is correct, then I probably have to bring it up to my counselor or switch firms if they don't accommodate what I want for my career. Advice from people with experience would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]

GPA in free fall, is my career over? Posted: 01 Jul 2021 03:25 PM PDT Hi guys, my gpa has been in free fall since the pandemic started. I was always the 3.5 guy doing a double major in Accounting and Information systems. The past 3 semesters have been family problems at home causing C's with some D's and an F now I am sitting at around 2.3. Should I look in another line of work? [link] [comments]

Yearly review did not go as I had hoped, am I being unfair? (B4) Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:16 PM PDT I am currently at my firm for 19 months as a now A3 Tax associate at pwc. I had my year end review yesterday and overall tier was a 3. I'm incredibly frustrated because my development team told me this was because I had worked on too many clients and didn't have a consistent client base. Which is partially true because our HR has shifted myself (and every single associate) around right before busy season started. Myself and another had major clients moved around, whereas the other associates had very small clients moved. I point blank asked my mentor if this was performance related and I was told, word for word (I complained to my GF immediately after my meeting so I'm reading my phone here) that my review was not performance related at all and that "there hasn't been a single complaint about performance". So I asked if there was anything I could be improving on and essentially was told they had no other feedback for me. I kid you not, there was nothing else mentioned aside from the fact that my client schedule was not consistent enough (which I don't even know how is my fault, I can't choose my clients) All of my seniors that I work with have given me great reviews and very encouraging feedback - my Snapshots were 45% at level 45% partially at next level and 10% at next level (roughly). I got 3 Performance Differentiators. I feel like I have grown tremendously in the last 7 or 8 months and have stuck my neck out for extra projects to make myself stand out. I was not expecting a 1 nor do I think I deserve one, but falling outside of the 2 category has me nervous for my chances at being promoted to Senior next year. The discussion left me really upset to the point where I do feel like I should be looking somewhere else, but I wanted to first vent/see if I'm being a baby about this all. [link] [comments] |
