France fines Google $267 million for abusing ‘dominant position’ in online advertising

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 03:30 AM PDT

France's competition watchdog has fined Google 220 million euros ($267 million) for abusing its market power in the online advertising industry.

The French Competition Authority said Monday Google had unfairly sent business to its own services, and discriminated against the competition. Google has agreed to pay the fine and end some of its self-preferencing practices, the watchdog said.

The investigation found that Google gave preferential treatment to its DFP advertising server, which allows publishers of sites and applications to sell their advertising space, and its SSP AdX listing platform, which organizes auction processes and allows publishers to sell their "impressions" or advertising inventory to advertisers. Google's rivals and publishers suffered as a result, the regulator said.

Isabelle de Silva, president of the French Competition Authority, said in a statement that the decision is the first in the world "to look at the complex algorithmic auction processes by which online advertising 'display' operates."

She added that the investigation revealed processes by which Google favored itself over its competitors on both advertising servers and supply-side platforms, which are pieces of software used by publishers to manage, sell and optimize ad space on their websites and mobile apps.

"These very serious practices have penalized competition in the emerging online advertising market, and have enabled Google not only to preserve but also to increase its dominant position," said de Silva.

"This sanction and these commitments will make it possible to re-establish a level playing field for all actors, and the ability of publishers to make the most of their advertising spaces."

Google announced in a blog on Monday that it will be making a series of changes to its advertising technology.

"We recognize the role that ad tech plays in supporting access to content and information and we're committed to working collaboratively with regulators and investing in new products and technologies that give publishers more choice and better results when using our platforms," wrote Maria Gomri, legal director of Google France.

The investigation comes after U.S.-based News Corp, French newspaper Le Figaro and the Belgian press group Rossel filed a complaint against Google.

Regulators across Europe are clamping down on the major U.S. tech giants amid concerns that they wield too much power on the bloc's 700 million plus citizens.

Last week, Facebook was hit by two antitrust probes from regulators in the U.K. and Europe.

The European Commission has launched probes into Amazon, Google and Microsoft over the last few years, while the U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority has also launched probes into Google and Apple since it became an independent regulator in its own right in January following Britain's exit from the EU.

Yellen Said "a Slightly Higher Interest Rate Environment" Would Be Positive

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 08:40 PM PDT

Just wanted to post - because I did not see anyone mention it - that, after the G7 meeting, Yellen mentioned the increase in interest rates would be positive for our society: CNBC article

The futures for Dow Jones, Nasdaq, and SPY allegedly already dipped "Sunday night" according to the Investor's Business.

I'm not claiming I know what the market will do with this statement (if anything), but just wanted to give a heads-up for everyone here.

Happy trading and investing this week! Cheers.

Does anyone else think Chipotle (CMG) is insanely overvalued?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:48 AM PDT

Food quality has dropped significantly in the past few years. I have noticed a radical change in public opinion of chipotle with my friends and peers. Labor and food prices are becoming more expensive, which in my opinion will cause chipotle to lose what little competitive advantage it has. Looking at buying puts soon. Any thoughts?

Can I actually make a million from my start up job stocks?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:19 AM PDT

Sorry for the dumb question. I am still very new to stocks and company stocks. This is my first job that offers stocks. I feel like this is too good to be true if the company's goals do go through.

I am hired at a startup company which is planning go public within 2 years. They offered 7000 ISO at $3.50. Within 3 years I'll have vested all 7000 (I understand I can't buy all of them if I quit early). My question is, assuming they do reach their goal of $200+ per share after going public in 5 years, does that mean I can sell my 7000 and make 1.4 million? Or is there a catch I am missing? I can't help but think for people working 8 years at Zoom for example can sell their shares and be very rich now. It just feels too good to be true.

PS. I know most startups fail and I shouldn't have my hopes up. But I am asking hypothetically if it does succeed.

ICLN etf currently sitting around $20 apiece, is it a good time to add it to my portfolio?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 09:26 AM PDT

New to investing here, trying to get a diverse portfolio, and have been looking into energy. Rather than investing in oil, I was thinking of trying to find a nice long-term investment in renewable energy. Is ICLN a good move at only ~$20 apiece?

Biogen (BIIB) drug Aduhelm (Aducanumab) Approved by FDA for Alzheimer's Disease Treatment

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 08:20 AM PDT

Biogen's Aduhelm has been approved by the FDA to treat Alzheimer's Disease. Trading of Biogen (BIIB) is still halted as of 11:18 AM (Eastern). EDIT: Trading scheduled to resume at 1:30 PM (ET).

Aduhelm targets amyloid plaque deposits, long thought to be associated with the cognitive decline of Alzheimer's Disease. There are still many hurdles with translating the drug to profits, as a followup study is pending. Pricing concerns based on drug efficacy raised by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) may also lower the upper limit of profitability. Insurers may be hesitant to cover Aduhelm without a clearer demonstration of efficacy.

    Diversifying "too much"

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:09 PM PDT

FOMO is getting me, I want to buy every stock I hear about in reddit and news with small quantity.

is it better to to have let's say 20 stock with small quantity in your portfolio or 3-5 stocks with large quantity?

I read and watched lots of videos about emotional trading, but I keep doing the opposite of what I learnt from them!

    Best clean energy ETF?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:50 AM PDT

New investor here, I'm building up a diverse portfolio and need a stock or ETF for energy. I was thinking oil at first but I want something more long-term so I was thinking of something along the lines of renewable energy? $ICLN really caught my eye but it has an expense ratio of .4% which is a bit steep. Is it worth that high of an expense ratio? Are there any other renewable energy ETFs that have a lower expense ratio?

    Morning Update for Monday, 06/07/21

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 06:01 AM PDT

Good morning everyone, I hope you had a nice weekend.

This list is geared towards day trading. With the momentum watchlist especially, I am typically in and out very quickly, only occasionally longer than a couple minutes, usually faster scalps. Always have a plan when you enter a trade (for profit taking and for taking a loss), and use proper risk management for your account.

    Main Watchlist:

    Gapping UP:

    • PTON: Appears to have bounced off the SMA(50) from Friday's trading. Could see more upwards movement today, especially if PTON holds over the 104 level.
    • LEDS: Seeing continued momentum from last week. Premarket high of 26.24 at the moment.
    • MGNI: Gapping up right around the SMA(9). Could see more upwards movement if it gets above and holds over 30.
    • TLRY: Premarket high of 19.47. Potential support around/just below that 19 level. Worth watching for a breakout if it gets over ~21.40 (daily chart).
    • MIC: Should be opening up near a resistance level around 40-41. Could provide good shorting opportunities if it fails, I'll be watching for a further breakout though.
    • QTS: Up after being acquired by Blackstone, at $78/share. Might be priced in at the moment, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.
    • USCR: Up after being acquired by Vulcan Materials, at $74/share. Might be priced in at the moment, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.

    Gapping DOWN:

    • PGR: Gapping down below relevant SMA's. If it fails to get back and hold above 99, there could be some shorting opportunities.
    • WYNN: Pretty significant support level around 120 on the daily chart. Could provide opportunities to go long if it gets back and holds over 128.
    • MGI: I'll watch for a potential short below 10. If it holds up, there could be more upwards momentum.

    Momentum Watchlist

    • RMED (+51%): Couldn't find a relevant catalyst. Seeing strong volume and price action in premarket, I'll be watching to see if the momentum continues. Has showed potential for intraday price movement in the past couple days of trading.
    • LMNL (+44%): Up after FDA approves genetic disorder drug. Seeing decent volume and price action in premarket. Potential premarket support around 5.54-5.55.
    • NEXT (+28%): Up after an upgrade from Morgan Stanley. Seeing good volume and price action in premarket. Premarket high of 3.35.
    • BBIG (+7%): Up on momentum from Friday. Seeing decent volume and price action at the moment, I'll be watching to see if it continues.
    • CLNE (+10%): Up on momentum from the past couple days of trading. Seeing decent volume and price action in premarket. Potential resistance levels at 10.50 and around 11 on the daily chart, with potential support at 10.

    Market Outlook:

Stocks are looking at a mixed open this morning, after finishing off last week with some strength. SPY is trading a bit under 423, and will likely test the ATH levels as resistance this morning. There could be some indecision in the morning; if it fails we could see some shorting opportunities, if it breaks through, we could see a push further up. DIA is trading just over 348, and still has some room before reaching ATH levels (just over 351). Could test 348.65 point as resistance. Tech stocks are down a bit this morning, and they'll likely be testing a resistance area today (QQQ testing ~336 area). Gold, silver, and crude oil are all down a bit this morning. Bitcoin is currently trading around 36,700, after a relatively uneventful weekend. Ethereum is up a bit over 2% at the moment. Crypto-related stocks are mixed in premarket. Marijuana stocks are up a bit in premarket, and I'll be watching them throughout the week. Meme stocks seem to be showing some strength this morning, and will be worth monitoring.

In high-inflation environments, we have traditionally seen strength in healthcare, energy, real estate, and consumer staples, while we typically see weakness in materials and tech. This will be important to follow in the near future, as people are watching inflation rates very closely at the moment.

Remember to use proper risk management, by making sure you size appropriately for your account and have a plan for every trade you enter (both for taking profits and cutting losses). Happy trading everyone :)

What is going on with BYND

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Serious question here. I like Beyond Meat company and i am a true believer in the plant based foods for the future, however, seeing all this news nonsense with meme stocks and how they are inflating the prices... it gets me a bit concerned now to hold BYND as this stock has been labeled meme too. This company's stock price growth should be based on the fundamentals re economy openings etc. Seeing the price going up a lot lately has me worried now that it could be all due to the meme talks.

Buy company stock at a discount (Supernus Pharmaceuticals, SUPN)?

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 11:52 AM PDT

I have been working at SUPN for about 4 months and starting June 15th to June 30th I will have the chance to buy company stock at 85% of market value which is determined by the closing price of the stock on the day that I place the order. June 15th to June 30th is the only time when you can buy stock at 85% of market value and it is the only time I would be able to sell the stock for full price. If I sell outside of those days I would be selling for 85% of market value. If I am fired or just need the money I can choose to hold on to the stock till I can sell for full price during the June window or I can sell any time for 85%.

While I am not sure how many years I plan to stay with the company and I am not sure what my long term goals are it seems like this would be a good investment. Based on my work load and the amount of people that have recently been hired it seems like there is or at least should be a lot more revenue coming in. Am I missing something about why I should not buy the stocks at a discount?

    r/Stocks Discuss Overlooked Stocks Monday - Jun 07, 2021

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT

It's lunchtime, Wall St time; time to discuss overlooked stocks that no one is talking about: Overlooked & possibly undervalued stocks.

All the rules of r/Stocks still apply, so please see the sidebar or click here.

But here's the twist you can't bring up meme stocks that have been hotly discussed in the past several weeks. Those stocks that everyone has been talking about, you can't bring up here or they'll be autoremoved. Why? It's to keep this thread pure & focused.

The current list of meme stocks can be found here. So don't mention these stocks in this post or your comment will be removed.

Need ideas on which stocks to discuss, try a screener like this one.

    Important links:

After discussing your stock here, feel free to create a post on r/Stocks with all the information you might have just learned.

Got 5k to burn and looking for stocks

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:18 PM PDT

I'm pretty heavily diversified via my current 401k and other investments. I found out my one 401k got rolled into an IRA but has been sitting in cash. I have about 7 or 8 stocks I really like, they're all tech but companies I know a bit about. Would I be better off loading up on 1 or 2? Or spreading the money? I plan to continue funding this account to DCA positions over the next year or so

    Thanks!

    eating dirt on $CLOV

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 01:17 PM PDT

I bought 100 shares of $CLOV at a net $9 share. I have been selling covered calls at $11 and did ok collecting a little income while the underlying languished. Now that is busting up (over $12 in after hours), I am pretty much locked in. I make a bit of profit so its not all a loss if the call gets exercised.

I certainly understood the risk making the position. I am ok with it all. It has me thinking if there is anything I can do to improve my position though other than buy out my call?

How do you lot manage your stop limits? Do you have them on every stock? To protect profit base or just original investment? I keep placing mine too close so that short term volatility sells before gains accrue. Do you do it on a percentage basis?

Holding too many bags that although I believe in would rather have sold and bought lower.

Looking for great reads to get started

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:17 PM PDT

I am looking to get started in investing in stocks and etfs to mostly build wealth for retirement but also use some money for a bit more risky investments. Therefore I am looking for all the recommendations on books or blogs that you can give to so I can start educating myself. I don't just wanna throw money at some stock (amc or gme) because someone on the internet says so but I want to learn how to value a stock and what makes a stock a great long term Investment. Basically as you can tell I don't know much about stocks so I just want some basic stuff and then some stuff to build on that. I love analyzing numbers and I want to use that to generate some passive income. I just need to learn how the stock market works. Thank you for any recommendation.

Big tech supports global tax, but wants digital services levies axed.

    Posted: 07 Jun 2021 02:01 PM PDT

'U.S. tech giants could benefit from the agreement of the Group of Seven rich countries' agreement to create a global minimum 15% corporate tax rate if the final deal also scraps increasingly popular digital services taxes, according to industry lobbyists.

The deal, reached Saturday, was designed to reduce companies' incentives to shift profits to low-tax offshore havens and could bring hundreds of billions of dollars into government coffers.

The statement on the U.S. Treasury Department website touting the deal also discusses the "removal of all Digital Services Taxes, and other relevant similar measures, on all companies."

Facebook Inc (FB.O) was quick to praise the deal, and Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google followed suit: "We strongly support the work being done to update international tax rules. We hope countries continue to work together to ensure a balanced and durable agreement will be finalized soon," said spokesman Jose Castaneda.

The industry wants levies like France's 3% tax on certain online revenues removed. In 2019, France applied a 3% levy on digital services revenue earned in France by companies with revenues of more than 25 million euros there and 750 million euros worldwide. It suspended collection in early 2020 while negotiations were underway on international tax rules.'
