Is 33% user drop off between app installs and completing a user signup flow "normal"?

It's very hard to find benchmarks out there for this, from your experience is this normal?

Our app is an audio based learning app (think Coursera meets podcasts) and 33% of our users who download the app never make it past the signup flow.
We're thinking about improving this flow but first want to understand if this is normal - I could imagine people downloading the app and realizing it's not for them for example.

Thoughts or your own benchmarks are welcome!

    Reasons to join a startup

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 01:16 PM PDT

This question has been bothering me for a while. Why does any engineer ever join a startup as an employee? They could join a large tech and have a comfortable life. Do startup have huge salaries for engineers? Little online research I did does not support higher salaries at startups in fact they suggest the opposite. One thing I read over and over again was the experience which just comes across as a sales pitch. You can get a good experience at a large company as well. When combined with a high risk of failure it doesn't seem to be worth it. So what are the main reasons to join a startup?

Thoughts on taking pre-orders directly on our website versus through crowdfunding channels?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2021 09:56 AM PDT

After several internal discussions, we have decided to not go the traditional crwodfunding route for our hardware startup. Instead we plan to take pre-orders directly on our website.

The idea is to take pre-sales and use these funds for tooling and manufacturing. Delivery is clearly stated to be after 5 months of the launch.

    1) Does taking directly pre-orders on our own website (via targeted ads) work well for hardware unit sales?

    2) We plan to sell a limited quantity. Even if we were able to do say 1,000 units, would it be better to say there are exclusively 250 units versus 500 units versus 1,000 units for presale on our first batch?

    Thank you!

Considering using a venture builder / start-up studio?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:26 PM PDT

I am strongly considering using a venture builder / start-up studio for my business. Just wanted to hear if anyone has had experience using a start-up studio/ venture builder for theirs.

The process is that you essentially pitch your idea to this studio and if they like it they will invest $X amount (The one I am looking at are willing to put £100,000 to £250,000) to research and development, marketing, testing, office space for 1 year. They also have some corporate partners which can be great for getting connections. They have their own employees who will work with you while you grow your business and eventually they will be replaced by outside hires. I view it as them expediting the start-up process, the main downside is that the venture builder will take 25+% of equity.

I am strongly considering this option, considering I don't have much money to start with and I don't have a team and I thinking giving up 25% might be worth it. I also don't know if at the back of my mind I should be concerned about them stealing my idea. I know ideas on their own are worthless but considering that the whole job of a start-up studio is to either manufacture their own idea and find other people to run with it or work with sole founders; maybe I should be concerned. My other concern is will I be diluting too much too soon?

Again, I know everything is on a case-by-case basis just wanted to know about peoples experience or advice.
