Startups Investing in a seed round

    Investing in a seed round

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 01:13 AM PDT

Hey all — was presented an opportunity to invest in a seed round via an SPV for a company that i find particularly intriguing. Considering putting in 7-8k as a means of diversifying into riskier investments.

Would appreciate any advice or insights from those who have been in similar positions in the past. How should I think about the investment over time? Anything I should be keenly aware of prior to committing? If you did something similar, how did it work out for you?

    Thanks!

How to start a startup without flashy web dev skills or AI/Machine learning

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:06 AM PDT

Besides someone saying hire someone, I am genuinely curious. Seems like that the market is dominated by AI and ML and to be successful you need an amazing landing page from the getgo. I am an mobile app developer and it seems like I've missed the IT field to specialize in.

Tell me about your problem(s) related to the logistics/supply chain in your company

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:11 AM PDT

    Hello Everyone :)

Before I go to the topic of this post, I would like to say a few words about myself:

I live in Poland, 12 months after launching my first business, I was forced to shut it down, while analyzing what went wrong, my main conclusion was that the products were badly matched to the market needs and also I tried to develop something in an industry in which I have very little knowledge.

I have over 6 years of experience in the logistics industry (warehouses), still working under a contract of employment in one of the largest corporations in the world. Over the years, I had the opportunity to learn about logistics from the side of a data analyst for the whole of Europe and the manager of a team managing over 200 people at one time (in the department related to quality).

After analyzing the collapse of my first business, I decided to use what I know and have knowledge about it to build a service / product that would be a solution to a specific logistics problem of small and medium-sized companies

    My question to you:

As mentioned above, I works in the logistics (warehouse) sector. I plan to start another business, but learning from the mistakes I have made, I want to spend the next few months on market analysis and looking for problems related to logistics / supply chain among private people and small and medium-sized companies (mainly the e-commerce sector)

Today I would like to hear your stories of problems that you encounter while working with logistics in your own companies, but I am also interested in the stories of people who work full-time for someone in the company but see the problems that a given company has to face.

There is no one type of problem, I would like to hear about everything that concerns you, from technical things to problems with team management or the lack of specific warehouse / transport services

Thanks in advance for your time and support!🙂

How to sell a product without revenue but with a lot of traffic from a specific market segment?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:28 AM PDT

So I built a product that was fairly popular with a lot of organic traffic from a specific target segment but it doesn't really generate any revenue except some donations here and there. Due to some unrelated stuff, I wanted to sell this product so I tried to list it in platforms where people buy small products but none of them allowed me to list it since they used "revenue" as a metric.

This product is in the ed-tech market, and the value for this is that it will act as a lead generation tool for big ed-techs, but I don't see any ways to target and find organisations that are active and looking for interesting products to acquire. I don't know if this is a niche problem, but I'd be happy to hear pointers on how one could go about doing something like this. Any resources would be helpful. Thank you.

What would it take to create Facebook?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:23 AM PDT

I want to try building my own social media platform and I would like to know a little bit more about what it takes to be able to build one.

    • What kind of developers or team members would I need?

*How many Team members would be ideal?

    • What sounds like a reasonable budget to build site and both Android and iOS apps?

    • How long would it take to build from the ground up?

Am I crazy to think I can run before I walk?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:36 AM PDT

Thanks in advance folks and I'll preface by saying I have only done a little bit of research.

So my big idea has to do with taking on some big players in the food distribution sector of my city (in Canada). The two companies are not local, yet they hold majority of the market share probably just split it 50/50. They do distribute some local ( from other provinces) produce, but a most come from the states.

I recently came upon an innovative technology that could allow me to take the truly local private own shops/restaurants in the market and supply their produce hyper-local. Maybe later in the future approaches the companies and franchises.

Here's the running part. If I start small with only one unit of this innovative tech, I can experiment and slowly transition the buyers but once the Big Players figure it out won't they probably just force/chase me out? For this reason I figure if I can plan this just right and propose effectively to the investors, a multi-million dollar start up sneak attack could secure a ground in the market.

A little more about me. I come from the world of picking things up and putting them down. Completely new to business, and I have some pocket change. Am I being silly or does this make sense.

What do you do after you see that an idea isn't feasible or it flops?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:04 AM PDT

What do you do after an idea flops or just isn't gonna work? After you already talked to customers, people and etc...? Do you use that data and knowledge for a later project, do you write about it somewhere, do you just forget about it? To add to this, are your projects connected, eg your next project is something similar to the previous one or are they entirely different lions to tame?

    Business Model idea

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:36 AM PDT

Trying to start a membership service where people can get the resources they need. However, I feel like a lot of this is needed. How do I make it so basics are free but ppl still have the incentive to pay for more? Like a freemium? Or like when someone pays for a subscription, it pays for someone else so it's free for them (so it's accessible)? Any ideas on how to do this and be able to sustain?

    Looking for Co-founder

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:28 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I am the founder of MyFinReads and we provide a marketplace for investing community.

    Why am I looking for a co-founder?

As with any marketplace, there are two sides of the business: Supply and Demand.

The approach I am taking to grow business is to solve the supply side problem first and then use Performance marketing to solve the demand problem.

Here Supplier is the people who have sound investment idea(ex. public market, crypto) and want to share with the world. In return, a person can grow their audience and put a membership plan.

Organically, I got a few suppliers but it has slowed since then. Hence, looking for a co-founder who can solve above-stated supplier side issue.

    What I expect from you?

    1. Commitment: You shouldn't quit after a few unsuccessful weeks. Keep working until we become successful or die. (Not dying but you get the point)
    2. Some skills: Managing supply pipeline. If you are in investing domain or has a good investing network, that would be ideal. It doesn't matter if you're a technical founder or a salesperson.

    It's my 2nd entrepreneur effort and it's 100% bootstrapped. I don't expect my co-founder to work full-time. Also, I am a solo founder.

How can I apply? - Just write a comment

When does having a leaver clause with a share offer make sense

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 05:26 AM PDT

I'm the first employee at a company and after 9 months they have setup a VSOP program. The actual amount of shares is a bit less than I was hoping for but I can live with it. The shares will be vested over 3 years (no cliff, vesting monthy) starting from my start date 9 months ago. They are also adding a clause that says if I choose to leave before an exit event I get nothing but if they let me go then I get whatever shares have been vested. I've never had a clause like this and it seems like it could lead to me being a bit trapped and will put me in a weaker position in the future as they will know I have to take what they give me or lose my shares.

Am I worrying about nothing or is this something I should try and have changed? Thanks for your thoughts!

Edit: Sorry for the confusion but they specifically said there they would not do a cliff and my shares would start vesting right away and be back dated to my start date. They leaver clause is separate and says if I leave/quit at any point (1 year or 5 years or 10 years) from now I would lose ALL of my shares.

Challenge: Getting an initial audience before official launch; How to overcome it?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 09:24 AM PDT

Say you made Instagram. Your first competitor is Facebook. How do you get the initial audience? If I were a new user and saw Instagram - I would not engage on the site unless it has a large of audience already (eg; private networking where you have a beta test and somehow gathered thousands of users before launch) . Otherwise, what's the point of creating a social media account when no one uses it?

I believe a lot of startups come across this challenge (it does not have to be related to Social Media, such as Youtube, Twitch, eBay - I believe all of them requires an initial audience first before others want to engage on it). How did you guys overcome it?

Is there a nice embeddable blog/CMS?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:40 AM PDT

I have a main landing page for my app. I'd like to begin content marketing, and would like to implement a CMS or blog platform.

My landing page currently is pretty vanilla HTML + JS running on Github pages. I do not want to move the landing page entirely to a CMS (I'm a developer, so I prefer the full flexibility instead of having to wrangle with a CMS).

Is there something like Disqus (some embeddable component) that I could use for managing blog posts, such that I can easily onboard someone non-tech savvy to be able to publish articles onto the website?

I have thought about having a subdomain point to a WordPress site, but this is less ideal since I want the SEO juice to flow back to the main site, and I prefer the blog to exist on the same subdomain as the main website.
