Should I form an LLC without talking to a lawyer? And overcoming Analysis Paralysis.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:24 AM PDT

I was planning on starting my business 6 months ago (check profile for more details). Right now it's something that I want more than anything (besides my girlfriend.. Although TBH this is at the forefront of my mind more so) but honestly I was too scared and just ended up putting it off. Well now I want to take a crack at it. I had a lot of confidence a few days ago when I started re- researching and planning everything I would need to do this.

But now I am scared again. Honestly, I kind of want to file for an LLC this weekend so that I can keep pushing myself in the right direction and not backtrack. I am pretty confident that even if I went to a lawyer they would tell me to create an LLC. I have several similar business ideas but haven't fully committed to which B2B idea I want to commit to (I am going to try joining local entrepreneur groups and talking with potential clients and pivot ideas if I need to). So even if I talked with a lawyer this week without know exactly what business idea I am going with (or even if my customers will pay a one time fee or be reoccurring payments), he won't be able to give sound advice. A lawyer could give me good tips for what to include in the operating agreement, but since I will be the sole owner for the time being I think I could just do it myself.

Would there be any downside of just talking to a lawyer later If I feel that my business has risks that need to be addressed? As long as I do the things I need to protect me personally from liability (prevent the piecing of the corporate veil) then is there any downside to just owning an LLC if you don't do much with it?

Thanks to anyone who shares their thoughts. This is in the State of Texas.

What’s the best way to do market research for a new idea?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 05:20 AM PDT

    Hi!

I wanted to create a more local « stickK » with some local associations and some crypto.

I tried to pitch the idea with a Google Forms to two local Facebook groups of entrepreneurs and… 0 answers.

What is the right way to do market research for a local idea like that? I don't have any account with influence, etc…

    Thanks!

The Compound Effect showed me the INCREDIBLE power of long-term planning

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:28 AM PDT

Throughout our lives, we're generally conditioned to seek immediate gratification and reap the rewards for our work as soon as humanly possible… and while this may seem to work out for some, it is just not the best way to set our expectations.

When our expectations are grounded in the short-term, we're bound to be disappointed and experience levels of anxiety. However, if we view our efforts and investments as long-term goals, the compound effect begins to take hold with everything eventually taking off and skyrocketing to incredible heights.

What I've learned about the compound effect is that long-term planning will ultimately bring you calm and joy over the course of your life. This is true of any money that you invest, as well as the work that you put in to build something. In fact, I HIGHLY recommend you listen to this short parable about the Sage who shocked an Indian King with some rice and a chessboard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SJsqS5-4JU

If you choose compounding to be by your side, you might just surprise yourself with what can truly end up working out in your favor.

Interested with the idea of selling foreign language worksheets and lesson plans

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:58 AM PDT

I am a major in a foreign language and know that some books and workbooks i've had in the past just straight up sucked. Foreign language material is very hit or miss if you're not trying to break the bank for a book. I've toyed with this idea of making my own downloadable worksheets for about a year now but put it in the back of my head during college.

Now it's summer and I have had non stop ideas to make money. I have decided this one might be my best bet as the lesson plans and work sheets i've seen on etsy are okay, but a lot are very childish and wouldn't be the best fit for an 8 grader, high schooler or even someone in college. My idea is to make them much more modern and clean looking.

I don't know how to go about this to be quite frank. I don't know anything about how to make (where to find) nice pdf templates and how i can advertise them. I would sell on etsy most likely to gain some initial traffic. I'm very new to the business world and would love tips.

"Clubhouse" Discussion - Relates to startup ideas in general

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:03 AM PDT

I will start by saying I think Clubhouse is pretty cool. I do not have it personally but have read about it/seen pics etc etc so I have a good enough idea of its "thing".

This is what I want to discuss:

If someone on this subreddit (or just someone in your life) came up to you and told you the idea of Clubhouse, what would your reaction be?

    The person with the idea:

"Hey man, so I have this cool idea about a social media platform involving podcasts. Basically you get invited to the platform and can join different clubs that focus on specific topics. And within those clubs you will find live podcasts that you can join and listen."

Sounds cool, but my FIRST thoughts to that were and are:
    A) Why don't I just listen to the podcast on Spotify once it is uploaded there? (or whatever source you currently use)
    B) I can listen/watch podcasts on Youtube. They also have live podcasts there as well where you can comment etc...

I feel like these would be the exact replies and comments by most people to someone suggesting the idea of Clubhouse. I feel like our big question would be "well what makes you idea so much better and different for people to use it?"... So what makes Clubhouse so unique and allowing it to really catch on? What is differentiating Clubhouse from other places to enjoy podcasts?

My post is not so much to only focus on Clubhouse, but also extend into a discussion on how an idea does not necessarily have to be completely innovative and new... but just different enough for people to accept it as an interesting alternative.

    What would you do?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 08:46 AM PDT

If you were in your early 30s always wanting to live in US but being stuck in London because the immigration system sucks, would you get a mortgage and try to build a business there or just rent and try building your business hoping you make a decent exit that would allow you to own a house? The risk of doing so is great, but I never felt London or UK was my home, however I did spend 7 years here already. I'm at a loss. I always dreamed of living in US but it looks like the chances are getting slimmer and slimmer... I am not from the UK originally btw.

Investing in digital assets, are content sites the best way to go?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:36 PM PDT

I have some money I'd like to invest and I'm wondering about buying a few content sites. I have experience with SEO, creating content and creating digital products. I think if I find the right site, I'd be able to monetize it correctly.

The only thing is these sites sell for around 35 times their monthly income multiple. To get a site that makes me $1,000 a month, I'd have to shell out $35,000.

I don't think that's bad when it comes to things like real estate and the annual ROI is about 30% which compared to stocks is pretty good.

I think I'm just getting scared of a possible three-year payback period. Are these numbers reasonable?

Is it worth doing jobs for free to gain experience?

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 01:46 PM PDT

I have a stable source of income that does not require a 9 to 5. I am also fresh out of school meaning that I really want/need to gain experience in as many fields as I can. I was wondering if it is a good investment of my time to shadow/help people that specialize in certain fields without getting paid? (my father has many connections so getting access to someone to shadow/help is not an issue)

    Micro-Niches and DBAs

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 04:23 AM PDT

So I already have the LLC but if I want that LLC to also open micro-niche shops for VintageVWhubcaps.com do I need to set up a DBA for each one also? Or is it just simple enough to say "By X LLC" somewhere on the page?

Using a phrase in native language on website.

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:33 AM PDT

So, I am from India. It really makes me feel bad how English is seen here as a status symbol and all that. When you look at countries like China and Japan, they even have names on the buildings written on their own languages. I am not saying that knowing English is not good, but I have seen people conversing in English on the streets while eating something, and then throwing the wrapper/packaging there itself. I mean..... okay, enough of my rant.

I was thinking of adding a phrase written in Hindi, on my website. Do you think that will be something that builds a better rapport. It will sure be something people will remember.

    Blockchain and Customer Sentiment

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 11:02 AM PDT

I'm creating a blockchain product- not cryptocurrency- targeting Enterprise customers that will help in bringing real life data to blockchain with smart contracts running top of the data hence increasing the mass adoption of Blockchain for Enterprises.

I'm the sole founder and just brought onboard an award winning Google Scholar/Blockchain researcher who has lots of publications in IOT/Hyperledger/Ethereum.

Additionally, I'm also coordinating with multiple other Blockchain experts to validate the idea and to create an overview technical architecture. For MVP, we are aiming for $20k as development cost. However, based on Lean Startup methods, I'd like to know the sentiment of customers for the product we want to introduce so we can address the needs properly and save ourselves from more money, effort and risk. What's the best way to go about navigating this?

    Thank you!

Anyone have experience running a "local online" buisness? Would love to hear what people think of my idea!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 09:41 AM PDT

I live in a Canadian university town with lots of engineering students of about 150k people in the metro area. I was looking to pick up electronic components for a couple projects I wanted to do but quickly realized there's nowhere to purchase any within a 2 hour drive of here (I know this because I hear people mention it occasionally). Could it be viable to run a local online buisness out of my garage where people can order and pick up or pay a delivery fee to purchase components? How could I go about marketing this and is it realistic, or too niche?

    Thanks!

    How to deal with criticism

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:45 PM PDT

I unfortunately have a pretty low self esteem which I know is bad if you want to put yourself out there and become and entrepreneur and market to a bunch of people.

But I'm pretty bad a criticism which is why I don't tell my friends what I'm doing and am hesitant to promote myself everywhere

Whenever someone criticizes what I'm doing I usually take it to heart especially when it's online bc it's hard to tell what their tone is. I just wish it were easier for me to accept criticism, even if the critic might be rude

It's just so hard to do man, fuck

    I feel like a bitch

Thinking of launching a public beta of my app on ProductHunt next week, would love some last-minute ideas and feedback!

    Posted: 05 Jun 2021 08:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I am a student who has been developing this Customer Loyalty app for the past few months by himself. The idea is simple, you generate codes, hand them out to your customers either physically or digitally, and you reward your customers which in turn then makes them visit your shop again. The very core idea of the app is currently finished, but I have soo much more I would love to add to it, hence the beta. I would love to see what kind of opinions and feedback I get, and see if there even is any interest for this. What I do still need to do is come up with a proper name and logo, buy a domain and set up a email for emailing users when they scan a winning code, and for registrations(yes you may sign up with invalid emails right now).

    The problem?

Large companies always build a in-house solution for customer loyalty programs. Just recently I saw McDonalds implemented their own app for collecting points and getting rewards. This is a problem because a customer will have to download an app for each place they want to visit in order to get rewarded.. This gets really annoying and it's a huge turnoff for customers.

    My solution

    next-scan.com, or maybe quickScand(yeah that's terrible I think lol).

As I mentioned above, no need to even enter a real email right now since I didn't buy a domain yet so feel free to sign up and test it out!

Don't hold back with the criticism, I want to hear what you all think!

    Thanks for your time

    Can’t make LinkedIn connections

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:33 PM PDT

I am currently trying to market my service to record labels. I am confident in my product, but am having a hard time with distribution. When I try to connect with people in the industry, they just ignore me for the most part. This is understandable because I have no REAL connections in the industry and am new to linkden. Also a tad young to be respected. But my question is how do I make connections on linkden and not get denied?
