Paying off Great Lakes student loans? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:38 PM PDT I have been taking advantage of the 0 interest rates this year(s) and dumping money into my loans. I plan to make one last payment next month (!!); I checked the "payoff amount" calculator & it's the same amount that shows on my balance due page. Can I just make that payment & let them send (or not send, I don't care at this point) notification that I've fulfilled my servitude & I'm officially student debt free? I've just been looking around the website & I'm paranoid I need to get in contact with them first & let them know ahead of time. [link] [comments] |
How can I discretely ask my lender if they'd forgive my loan if I die? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 10:56 PM PDT On my PRIVATE student loan contract, it says that "loans MAY BE forgiven upon death of the borrower." What exactly does that mean? Is that a yes or no? How can I ask them without getting them suspicious? [link] [comments] |
Lawyer said to just stop paying… Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:13 PM PDT I am currently in grad school (mostly paying out of pocket. It's cheap where I'm at) and my undergrad loans are paused while that's happening. My federal loan is doable with the IBR. But, I have Sallie Mae as well and BEFORE I paused it I was paying $375 a month. I am terrified of how I will afford this once it all kicks back in. I'm a teacher in Oklahoma. Masters will be in school counseling so I can make a little more and have the chance to adjunct at community college for extra cash. My grandpa was my co-signer and passed from dementia a year ago. He wasn't coherent in his last days. He left my Mom some money and she said it might be possible to use some to pay off my loan. I KNOW if he had been coherent he would've wanted me to. She invested it all instead, which is good for her! She asked her lawyer about it and his advice was to tell me to just not pay the loan because the co-signer was gone and they couldn't do anything to me. Uhm. Have you not heard of a credit score?! I can't just stop paying it!!!! What the heck?? Anyway. Idk if need advice or just kindred spirits. But I graduate in December. I'm really concerned. [link] [comments] |
How difficult is it to get a cosigner released from my loan? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 11:31 PM PDT I don't want to leave anything up to chance and leave my parents with my loan when I pass, so I've been looking into getting them released as cosigners. But the requirements are pretty vague and there aren't that many stories of it actually happening. This article even says 90% get rejected. I meet all the "requirements" of a Sallie Mae cosigner release such a X amount of on-time payments, no forbearances within the last 12 months, etc. But the problem is that I make minimum wage, will they see that and just deny me every time? Can't update employment details Posted: 20 Jun 2021 02:56 AM PDT Hey all! I just finished my bachelor studies and I received a letter from the SLC datef from 11May 2021 about updating my contact details. I called them yesterday on the 19th of June 2021 to do that, but they told me I also need to upload a third party declaration form. However, when I log in into my account and go to the section 'update your employment details', after answering a few questions, they show me the declaration form but I cannot upload it anywhere. After the page with the document pops up there is a button 'start now' with some questions regarding my contact details, but there is no place where I can upload any third party declaration form with supporting evidence of my sources of finance. On the phone, I was told I need to upload those files on the platform within 42 days of receiving the letter, but there is no upload option. What can I do? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Jun 2021 12:15 AM PDT Long story short, in 2011 I moved out of state to live with my mom in a major city and start my freshman year of college. Obviously they tacked on out of state fees which came out to an additional $3k for that semester. Parents didn't have the money so they encouraged me to apply for a Parent Plus loan which got denied. Since it was denied, I was still eligible for another form of student loan(forgot what it's called) but it would still be under my parents name, social, etc. We took that route and I ultimately received about $3k in refund money. As a very naive and foolish teenager, I gave my mom half of the refund money because she asked for it and since it was her name on the line. For the past 4 years (pre-Covid) I had been paying on the loan myself instead of her. Here we are 10 years later and my mom earns exponentially more money than me but hasn't said a word about paying back the cash money I gave to her. Sure, it was probably spent frivolously but I feel like its only right that she at the very least agree to pay it back. I am paying my personal student loans and the loan under her name. Now that Im older, I realize money and family do not mix. The last thing I want to do is cause a rift between my mother and I but I cant keep carrying this burden alone, especially since she reaped a benefit from it at that time. How would you address this? Can I ask something sorry if it seems nosey Posted: 19 Jun 2021 11:14 PM PDT How much debt do y'all have and how much do y'all make? And how has ur debt affected ur life? And if you could go back to your younger self what advice would u give? [link] [comments] |
Do Community Colleges Count as Attending School? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 02:19 PM PDT I took out a loan from my university for the 2020 - 2021 FASFA year and will be missing a semester (Fall 2021) since the prereqs I need for upper electives are taken up, but were available at local community colleges that I'll attend Fall 2021. Does this still count as me attending school? Also, If I were to miss the Spring 2022 semester at the university as well, but was enrolled at community college would I need to begin repaying my student loans? I emailed my loan holder, Mohela and am waiting for a response, but wanted to ask here. I have yet to check with my university about still being enrolled as a student under some temp leave status. Need clarification of this question on my App. Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:12 PM PDT I'm filling out my Borrower Defense to Repayment application and I don't understand this question, could someone clarify? "Did you enroll at the school subsequent to the enrollment that is the subject of this claim?" [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:20 PM PDT I have a delinquency on my credit report due to 3 missed consecutive payments back in 2018 (long story but basically a miscommunication between my mom and I with no notification from sallie Mae) I have a high interest rate (about 12%) and have tried to refinance my loans but every time I have applied, I have gotten denied because of the missed student loan payments. I have been told in 7 years it will drop off but do I really have to wait that long to get refinanced 😩 Any suggestions on where to apply to get a lower rate that will approve? [link] [comments] |
Can you be denied student loans because of your investments? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 12:14 PM PDT I'm currently trying to re-apply for student loans as a 4th year student. In the application, there is a section that asks you to report any investments. I have a decent amount of money in my portfolio and was wondering if this would prevent me from getting a loan. Has anyone has any experience with this? For reference, I live in Canada. [link] [comments] |
Are there any loan companies that would accept a student with 2 year credit and 690 credit score? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 07:06 AM PDT Not sure why my score was 690. Never paid anything Kate always before hand. Everything is green on credit karma. It was 745 last March then it dropped 74 points but not sure why [link] [comments] |
Aunt can’t afford parent plus loan Posted: 19 Jun 2021 05:16 AM PDT I'm trying to help my aunt get some of her finances in order but I'm not up to date on current student loan policies. Long story short she had taken out a federal parent plus loan to help her daughter go to school. Her daughter was helping pay the loan then they had a falling out and now she's having a hard time keeping up with the loan by herself. Loan details: Lender: Mohela $25000 @ 7.9% She works as a teaching assistant making about $25000/year so I had started looking into student loan forgives but it seems like there is a lot of hoops to jump through. My first thought was to refinance at a lower interest rate. She has contacted Mohela to see what she can do to lower her payment but they haven't been much help and just say they can't do anything. Besides refinancing is there anything else I should look into? [link] [comments] |
How is financial need determined? Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:58 AM PDT My parents can afford to send me to college, but I don't want their money. I live in the same house as them, so household income is high although I won't be using any of it. All I have is my own savings which are just a few thousand dollars. Will I be qualified for any need-based scholarship? I'm thinking about the UK mostly. [link] [comments] |
