Ending my relationship with eBay, what's a practical alternative?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:50 PM PDT

I tried posting about this in /r/flipping but all I got was attacked for making mistakes instead of advice.

So I've been doing reselling online (buy at 70-90% off and sell online at a still deeply discounted rate) and I just got serious about it around 2 months ago and started listing merchandise on Amazon instead of FB marketplace and Offerup. However, Amazon's fees were too high for what I was selling, so I moved to eBay.

I've been offering free shipping on all of my items, but I made the mistake of not paying attention to how expensive eBay's fees were and realized my profits were only like 10-20% after fees and shipping instead of the 40-50% I thought they'd be. So I ended dozens of listings and I'm trying to figure out a better alternative.

Another mistake I realized I was making is that I was trying to match or beat all the other sellers, and I was attracting dropshippers, morons, and cheapskates who tried to negotiate prices even though I had offers turned off, my price was 10% lower than everyone else, and 60% lower than retail for NEW merchandise.

So the primary thing I need advice about is where I should be selling to minimize expenses (primarily listing fees.) I don't mind going back to Facebook/OfferUp, but I have hundreds of items now instead of a few dozen, and driving around to people with a 20+% no-show rate, even among highly rated buyers, makes that less practical given the the volume I'm doing now.

For business owners who are in the service industry. When did you decide to go full time?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 02:28 AM PDT

So I run a mobile mechanic side-gig. And everytime I happen to book 2-3 jobs in one week. It really makes me wonder if I should just say F it. And go full time sometime in the future.

I know you've all heard this before. But let me lay the numbers out like this. Last week. I made $360 for about 6 hours of work (including drive time) with my mobile mechanic gig. With My current full time job, I make roughly $600 per week. Working 40 hours. Of course with my day job. I do have insurance for me and my family. As well as a retirement fund.

But, I barley advertise my business at all. I make a post here on reddit. On my "business" account. Roughly once every 2 months to my cities subreddit. And besides that it's just word of mouth. And I would say that alone brings me in roughly $400-$600 a month.

So, if I were to actually go full time. And actually advertise actively. I really feel like I would be up to my eyeballs in customers. I live in a super small town. But I'm surrounded in every direction by small cities. The city south of me that I do most of my work in. Has 300k+ people. The three next to that all have 100k+ people. There's many mechanic shops in the area. But there's still lots and lots of people who can't afford to go to the shop. Or don't trust them.

So how do I truly calculate if it's a good idea or not to do this? I currently work overnight shifts, without much time off. and it kind of kills my family life at times. And I feel like having my own schedule would really improve my family life as well.

With what I currently charge. It would only take me about 10 hours of working per week. To make the same amount that I currently make working 40 hours a week. So what am I missing here? And what did you do?

    Bakery/Cupcakery Owners: Online Ordering?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 07:59 PM PDT

Any owners of a small bakery, or cupcakery, do online orders from clients? I have a small business that's growing insanely right now and we keep booking up with orders, which is great, but we are writing them by hand.

Some things I've noticed is that maybe we can't read each other's writing or it gets written down wrong and something gets messed up with the order. So I've been trying to think of ways to eliminate or reduce that as much as possible so we can run smoothly and the clients know exactly what they're looking for/getting.

We have a website through squarespace which has been great but what platform do you use for your online orders? I'd like to be able to space out the orders as well just so we don't get slammed with 5 orders all due at 11 am. For cupcakes I would do max two orders at the same time and in 30 minute increments. With cakes it would be max one per hour (I am the one person doing cakes at the moment as my staff usually are busy with cupcakes).

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Thank you!

Advice for a new single-person small contracting remodeling and roofing company?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 01:50 PM PDT

I have been doing this type of work for the past six years and know it well. I have started to realize that it will be a lot more profitable for me to start my own small contracting company instead of working for someone else. I am just looking for some general adivce on starting my own company that other people have learned from experience. I am not looking to grow this business and hire employees for at least a few years. Just plan to contract small jobs that can be done all by myself. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

What Ways Have You Been Marketing Without Paying Someone?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 10:10 PM PDT

I own a business consulting firm which creates business plans and pitch decks for small businesses and investors, and while I've had pretty good success since starting in August ($30K part time) I've been trying to hold off on paying for marketing until the well runs dry (and I can pay off the rest of my student debt) and wanted to know what some of you have been doing in terms marketing yourselves organically online. Note that I'm looking for free options; I have more than enough money to start marketing but I want to see how far I can go without that. Hope everyone's business is doing well!

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:59 PM PDT

I'm currently selling mink lashes, lip glosses, silk face masks etc. I started in September and I only got $88 revenue. My products are amazing and I sent them to few people to try. but I'm not making many sales. I tried TikTok but I'm shy to show up on camera since I'm not comfortable. I tried selling it on the Facebook market but it's not working. Can you all please give me advice on how to market my products to get sales every day?

thinking about creating a network / LAN business...

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:55 PM PDT

I have a CCNA, and am going to be filing my LLC soon and applying for a telco exception which allows you to run data and voice ethernet cables without needing an electricians license.

I basically plan on like charging money to run and install ethernet cable drops as well as if they want a network with switches, routers, patch panel as well as voip phones and wifi access points.

Problem is how do i get leads? How should i aquire customers? Thanks. It will have to wait longterm cause I am 18 and dont have a car but get around on an gas ebike thing which might look unproffesional but idk ive carried like tools and pc's on my ebike before and it works.

S-Corp Vs LLC to cover 3 side businesses

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 09:19 PM PDT

I'll start by saying I don't have a lot of knowledge on the differences between an S Corp and LLC when it comes to structure and taxes. I'll start with my situation:

I'm a full time employee with a commercial GC making a good salary. I just recently started consulting for a small remodel company that will pay me 5% of their total project cost for each new contract. They are currently just sending me (personally not to an LLC ) checks as new jobs start. I also build custom furniture occasionally under an LLC which I make between $10k-$20k a year. My wife is now doing side projects under my LLC and will probably bring in $10k-$20k with her art in a few business.

I'm thinking about starting an S-Corp as a blanket entity for my consulting and my wife and I's side businesses. Is this the right move to both cover myself both risk wise and tax wise? The consulting shouldn't put me at risk, but being construction you never know what curve balls could arise. I want to protect my assets while still being able to bring in additional revenue through out the year.

Thanks for your help & opinions

What are the primary responsibilities of a UX designer and a Product Designer in your company?

    Posted: 20 Jun 2021 12:11 AM PDT

There is a misconception that Product Designers and UX designers are one and the same. It's understandable, given that they both design products - but their duties vary greatly in terms of what gets designed. In short: Sorry- you just can't define Product Designers or UX Designers by one single thing!

What are your thoughts on the different roles and responsibilities of Product Designers and UX designers? And how do you solve the description of roles in your company?

In Product Design, the Product Designer is required to research and ideate on every aspect of a product - from its core functionality, design aesthetics, and marketing strategy. The UX designer focuses more exclusively on understanding what those who are using the product (e.g., customers) want or need in their interactions with it- which can often also be the responsibility of the product designer too.

I did talk to some entrepreneurs about this exact dilemma and wrote a article about it here: https://uxplanet.org/the-difference-between-product-designers-and-ux-designers-a-comprehensive-guide-6968951466bb

(FL) I have an LLC here and want to have a subsidiary in MS, what steps to take and can I do this?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:08 PM PDT

Business will be conducted in both states. The main reason MS is because it's $50 for an LLC, no fees/annual reporting....low-ish corp tax, idk if that matters...

I know I don't have state tax in FL, and will in MS, but if I have my fl LLC now become my parent company, won't the numbers funnel into FL anyways? Or is that after I pay my taxes on income in MS?

Approved for LLC. Changed my mind the next day. Cancellation Questions.

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 07:49 PM PDT

I just filed an LLC and was approved. The next day I changed my mind and wanted to cancel. Besides filing the online cancelation form LLC-4/8 (within the first 15 days of course), are there any other forms I need to submit? I am finding some conflicting information online and tried my best to search this sub, but didn't really find anyone who cancelled as quickly as I did.

Do I need to file Form 568 and/or Statement Of Information Form LLC-12? Because on an e-mail, it says I have to file within 90 days, but I just cancelled, so is there any point? Do I need to do any of this?

    Thanks in advance!!

Hey guys I am creating a SMM software that is specifically made for small business. I have come up with some features to distinguish myself from other social media management softwares but I have realized those mainly help enterprise users. If there is any advice you have for me or any features you would like to have added let me know.

Any ways to keep track of inventory through Zelle payment?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 04:41 PM PDT

We are a brand new business and got started with words of mouth. We received payment through Zelle for most order. Because our products are physical products, it is overwhelming sometimes to input and keep track of inventory manually from Zelle.

Is there any faster way to keep track with our inventory without doing it manually? Like an app?

    What are Franchise Taxes?

    Posted: 19 Jun 2021 06:40 PM PDT

Hi, I own a small event rentals business, where I rent out Bounce Houses, Tables/Chairs, and a Dj. I got a letter that basically says that my company is subject to franchise taxes. I am pretty new and learning about all the things for business. If anyone could give me a hand on what that might be, I would really appreciate it!
