I was thinking of just paying it all off now, but then I'll only have literal dollars in my account. Is it worth it?

Does paying extra on student loans reduce future monthly payments or shorten the repayment period?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 09:18 AM PDT

Assuming you're on a standard 10-year repayment plan, will overpaying reduce future monthly minimum payments or keep the same monthly minimum/shorten the payment period?

    Co-signer mistake

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 10:59 PM PDT

Several years ago, I helped a friend co-sign a private student loan. At the time, we were pretty close and I wanted to help him out. But that started to change as time went on. He became somewhat dodgy. He missed several payments as well. I brought up that he should refinance so he can get me off this loan since things have gotten pretty bad but he seemed very hesitant. I don't know what to do at my end. Do I have any good options?

Is it possible to get student loans without a co-signer

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:42 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I recently just graduated high-school and I just found out that I need to pay 10K out of pocket for college but I am an independent and I have no history of a credit score and I was wondering if it's possible that I can take out a student loan without a co-signer or a credit score?

    Experience with rehabilitation and Credit?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:30 AM PDT

My loan just transferred back to Nelnet a few days ago. I got the welcome email and set up payment options. My wife and I are looking to buy a house soon as possible. What has been everyone's experience with your credit report after rehab? Could I dispute with the bureaus to speed up the process to remove the derogatory mark? My credit is already high enough to qualify for a home loan, however, most mortgage companies won't touch my application just because of the mark. Any suggestions to speed up the process?

Is there any reason a school would deny certifying a private student loan if it is still within the COA after federal loans/pell grant?

GRAD PLUS LOAN QUESTION / MPN, Timeline, Winter/Summer session

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:02 AM PDT

Hello, I'm starting a masters degree this fall and have some questions about GRAD PLUS LOAN.

    1. Is there any due date to file MPN? Will the load not be processed until I complete MPN?
    2. When can I hear result about GRAD PLUS loan? (approved amount etc) I know the money will be sent in Aug - Sep depending on the school, but just wonder when I can know it's being processed.
    3. I'm planning to take winter session after the fall semester. But I think winter session tuition fee is not included the cost of attendance. Can I request adjustment of the loan amount for this?

    Thank you!!

Submitting the PSLF/ECF paperwork--how many times do I have to have a former employer complete this?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 06:57 AM PDT

I've had two jobs post grad. I'm still in the second job, so it makes sense that I have my current employer sign the PSLF form. Do I still need to ask my former employer to complete this? It's not like my payment info from three years ago has changed...

    Question about loan disbursement dates

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 04:14 PM PDT

Are there more than 2 loan disbursement dates per school year?

I thought it was once 30 days after Fall semester begins and once 30 days after Spring semester begins. Half and half.

Is it actually 2 times per semester? I feel like the information I'm getting from my school is confusing.

Overpaid on my loan, please help

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 06:11 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

My son had about 16k in student loans which I cosigned with him when he was 17. The issue was that during the course of the loan I had a few stressful life events and the late payments followed . The loan got up to 24k. I decided to basically say screw it and paid off the full amount of the loan with some stock I had lying around because I was tired of keeping up with monthly payment. I was told that these late payments would be removed from my credit report, however nelnet is refusing to take them off. I also had qualified for deferment, but was ignorant about it at the time of the loan. I filled out the paper work and am now in retroactive deferment, but still they will not take any action to clear these late payments. I overpaid on the original loan amount of 16k by quite a bit. It seems communicating with nelnet is getting me no where I'm thinking the next step is to talk to the department of education. Has anyone been in my shoes before? Have any general advice on how to get these late payments cleared and money back? Overall the whole experience has been shady as heck and I'm incredibly frustrated. The lack or communication and miscommunication from nelnet is utterly shocking.

    Taxes and Student Loans

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 08:54 PM PDT

It seems like student loans should be treated like a business expense.

Example: Business owner collects income then pays expenses with PRE-taxed money. Landlord collects rent and pays mortgage with PRE-taxed money.

    Vs.

Students collect wages then pays student loans with POST-taxed money.

    Stupid question

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 07:28 PM PDT

So I'm going back to school for my master's and I've never taken out loans before. I qualified for federal direct unsubsidized and federal direct grad plus loans. I signed the MPNs through the federal student aid website. My school received them and they said I'm all set.

Now I'm a bit of an over-thinker so I can't help but be paranoid that I'm supposed to contact a private lender, especially with the posts I'm seeing here. I'm still waiting for a response from the FinAid office to my question as to whether I need to go through a private lender. From what I've found on Google, I don't need to. But I figured y'all could help me out. So if any of you could answer my question and put my mind at ease I'd greatly appreciate it.

Would you contribute to an employer-sponsored student loan match similar to contributing to your 401K?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 06:56 PM PDT

Both the House and Senate measures would enable employers to make contributions to 401(k) plans (and similar workplace plans) on behalf of employees who are making student loan payments instead of contributing to their retirement plan.

Did A Collection Agency Re-Age my Loan?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 05:47 PM PDT

    Hi,

After years of being delinquent on my federal student loans, I'm finally on the right track! All my loans are in rehabilitation and are on the verge of being brought current with a new lender. YAY! With that said, I'm trying to clean up my credit and wonder what I can do about the closed accounts with negative remarks. I've read that closed accounts with negative marks are typically deleted from your credit report after 7 years and 180 days past your first delinquency. According to my TU report - those accounts are scheduled to drop off within the next 6 months (which adheres to the rule above). However, my Perkins loan has an estimated removal of 2026 although I've been delinquent on that one for the longest (about 9 years). I think a collection agency may have "reaged" my loan. Here are the facts: I first defaulted on my loan in May 2011 and hadn't made a payment since. Between 2011 and 2020, my loan bounced from collection agency to collection agency. All of the negative reporting/closed accounts from those agencies have aged out and fallen off my report. Except for the last collection agency. I'm not sure when they got my loan, but I know they closed the account on 1/16/2020. The only entry is on 12/31/2019 reporting 120 days late.

1.) Can they do that? Is that considered re-aging my loan?

2.) If I have grounds to dispute, how should I frame my case? I'm scared if I don't approach this correctly, I may only bolster the agency's argument to keep the mark on my credit.

3.) I have a copy of a 6/2014 TU report showing delinquency and a collection notice from another agency showing delinquency as early as 4/2013 (though the accounts were at a different agency at the time). Can I use these documents to bolster my case?

Am I the only one who's ever been in this situation? Is this common practice? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
