A question on renters insurance Insurance

A question on renters insurance Insurance

    A question on renters insurance

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:12 AM PDT

My roommate for 2 years has had us paying renters insurance for our house. Between 4 of us we pay 20 bucks a month. I never have signed anything or cataloged the things that I own for said insurance. If my stuff was stolen assuming that it's only under my roommates name would any of my stuff be covered? Can he write our names in for us? It has been a point of contention as I told him I don't want to pay it anymore when I'm not even sure it covers me. Would just like some general advice if even possible. I am located in Ohio if that gives any clarity.

Edit: Thank you everybody for the advice and clarity! I got a copy of the contract and am going to look over it after I'm off work and will update this post after.

They transferred me to a woman selling HVAC warranties. I guess my problem is too difficult.

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 09:24 AM PDT

I got a covid test in April. I gave the provider my current Aetna insurance card. Somehow, the provider charged the test to a plan I had five years ago at my university.

I called the number on the Explanation of Benefits form. It said the number was disconnected. I called the number on the back of my current card, the woman who answered said it was the provider's problem. I called the provider, they said they'd resubmit the claim but didn't know why an archived plan would show up in their billing system. I called another Aetna customer service line. They found the archived university plan and another from my previous employer. They could not find my current plan. They said they would transfer me to someone who could help. I waited on hold for fifteen minutes. A charming voice finally answered the phone, asked for my name and number and then asked how she could help.

    I answered.

    There was a pause.

She said "I think you have the wrong number. I handle HVAC and air conditioning warranties".

Thanks Aetna. That's a new way of avoiding your customers. I'm impressed but I'm still not paying $700 when I have perfectly good insurance.

Location: NC - old plans were in CO and CT, USA.

    Qualified life events question.

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:08 AM PDT

My ex wife lost her job and as a result my child is without health coverage.

I have insurance through my job. Is this a qualified life event to add my child to my coverage.

    Thank you.

How often do you see lawsuits for more than the bodily injury limits?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:30 AM PDT

Just a general question. It seems if you have 10/20, you get sued for $10,000. If you have 100/300, you get sued for $100,000. How often do you see clients come out of pocket when the payout is above the limit of liability.

Inquiry Regarding Insurance for a Video Game Tournament

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:17 AM PDT

    Hello all,

My group hosts a local video game tournament in New York State (Super Smash Brothers specifically) and we were looking at changing venues. We found a perfect location being a local church and they agreed to host us, however the only requirement they have is that we have the events insured to cover their liability. Our tournament scene is "small" only 20-30 players and we are not an official organization. How would we go about getting affordable insurance coverage for the foreseeable future for these bi-weekly tournaments? Thanks!

TX Gieco Renters insurance: Will it cover AirBnB guests, and would a claim by me or my roommate make my Gieco car insurance go up?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 06:58 AM PDT

I just got a policy 8K property/100K liability. Considering renting out my room for a few months. I know auto insurance excludes rideshares unless they pay a lot extra and wasn't sure if there were similar exclusions here.

Also, my renters and auto insurance are both though Gieco. I jokingly asked if a renters insurance claim could impact my auto rate, and they said it possibly yes it might depending, on the underwriter. What??? That seems like, illogical and unfair?

They said I could add my roommate for $25. At first that seemed like a no brainer. HOWEVER, if it's my policy and they make claims for something minor, how might that impact my renters insurance rates and possibly car insurance?

I don't mind paying $25 but X years of higher premiums for my roommate getting their car broken into, or misplacing a $100 bracelet seems like more risk than I want. This stuff feels like in the category of BS some states outlawed like increasing rates for not-at-fault accidents, but I doubt Texas (or anywhere?) has similar regulations for this.

Am I understanding things correctly? Thoughts/feedback/advice? Would getting renters insurance from a different company than my auto make a difference?

My parents are visiting the US for 6 months on a tourist visa, should they buy health insurance?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 03:59 PM PDT

My parents are visiting the US from Australia on a tourist visa (we recently had a baby). They will be staying with us and helping us with the baby for the next 6 months.

Should they get a tourist insurance from Australia or get a local health insurance in the US? They are in their early 60s and have no serious pre-existing conditions. So this will be for new conditions (e.g. they fall off the stairs and need to see doctors, they get seriously sick for whatever reasons etc etc)

Questions about emotional compensation after being hit by drunk driver

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 08:45 AM PDT

As the title says, I was hit by a drunk driver going the wrong way on a one way in Oregon (USA). I am very luckily walking away with minimal bodily harm; lots of deep bruising from my seat belt and a banged up elbow and knee, along with muscle stiffness and some back pain. I did go to urgent care and I will be following up with my primary in a couple of weeks (drs are so booked up thanks to covid times).

The witness and I had matching statements plus there is a police case so the driver's insurance (Geico) is accepting fault even though they have not been able to make contact with their client. Their client has called me twice and left long voicemails to which I have not responded and asked Geico to communicate to their client that I do not wish to speak with him.

I missed 2 shifts of work so far and I was not able to go on a dream vacation with my sisters of backpacking the enchantments. I bring all this up because Geico submitted an offer for personal loss of $1800. I talked with my insurance (USAA) and they have been very helpful, but cannot legally give me a number and I'm curious as to what a normal monetary consideration would be for this type of incident. I'm scared to get back in cars and I probably will not be driving for a bit which impedes my way of life as an avid hiker (plus body recovery time). I am not looking to make an exorbitant amount of money and I am currently creating a list of all the gear I bought for an early June snow hike. I also know that my insurance initially covers my medical and they have an unwaivering $250 deductible that I want Geico to cover.

My mom wants me to get a lawyer, but that seems extreme to me and another headache. I hate being on the phone and that's all I've been doing this entire week. I just paid off my 2015 car a couple of months ago so I did not get to enjoy the no car payment life for very long. I'm waiting to hear from the damage investigator and I want to be able to get a decent replacement car. I'm just looking for a sum number that I should ask for. I don't want to ask for too much, but I don't want to be low balled. I really would prefer not to have a lawyer since so far I do not have extreme physical injuries. I still do not really know how I walked away from this other than I am younger and in pretty good shape.

Wife lost job and I am insured under her. What should we do?

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 07:53 AM PDT

My wife and I live in CA. She is about to get let go and we will have coverage through end of June.

Cobra is being offered to her. I've heard it can be set up retroactively... which seems a bit weird, is that true?

Should we just go to Covered CA to sign up for a new health insurance policy?

Health Insurance w/ a Chronic Illness

    Posted: 10 Jun 2021 06:58 AM PDT

Hi, I'm 23 and was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease while on medicaid. As I prepare to be able to work and get real insurance - will I be able to find any and receive coverage for my condition? Or am I just SOL because I got diagnosed on another insurance. I'm confused and scared that I'll never be able to get insurance now that will cover or even partially cover my very expensive medications.

Former Fiance/Insurance Agent threatening to reveal private medical information

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 02:49 PM PDT

    Location: Tennessee, US

Hi, I am not an insurance agent, but my fiance is.

My fiance recently left me, it wasn't pretty, but the point is she knows a ton about my medical history/health conditions and is threatening to use it against me tonight in a public statement/Twitter thread if I don't do what she wants.

Now obviously I don't know what to do with this information, so I came here. This is obviously a HIPPA violation, right? Should I call her boss? A lawyer? I have no idea how to handle this.

Car in front of me had its tire tread separate and launched at me like a missile

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 11:52 PM PDT

So I was driving on a Northern Cali freeway following a safe distance from a car in front of me during semi heavy traffic and the guys tire blew up or something and it's tire tread launched at me like a rocket, hit my front bumper then somehow hit my door panels too. I got his insurance info and have video of his tire literally missing tread . Would I be at fault even tho his tire tread flew at me instantly? Only way to avoid it was to crash into someone on another lane. I also filed a claim against his insurance already.

Link to video of his tire caught in 4K having its tread separated:

    I’m at a loss

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 06:22 PM PDT

Our home insurance just decided we couldn't renew with them. I called young Alfred our insurance broker and they told us there is not a single insurance company providing insurance anymore in our area.

I'm afraid we will lose our mortgage if we can't prove we have active home insurance! We're a little devastated and could use any advice anyone could offer on what to do! :"(

Leaky AC duct caused by condensation. Coverage?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 07:15 PM PDT

I live in Texas, USA, and about a week ago my wife noticed a brown water stain on our ceiling. I inspected the attic for a leak, but it was dry as a bone. I deduced it was caused by excess condensation in the air ducts. I have insurance through SageSure and was wondering if the water damage cause by the condensation would be covered and perhaps the cause of the build up aswell?

Problem claiming Term Insurance of my deceased father.

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 08:14 AM PDT

    Location: India

My father Was suffering from Cancer and passed away few months back. He was crucial in the building of the company he worked with so they kept him on payroll to ensure his insurance stays and let him work from home. The company doesn't have a wfh provision and this was an informal setup by his manager.

He had undergone chemotherapy 20 times last year out of which we applied for only 10 medical leaves.

His office also provided claims for his medical bills and had given claim amount of 20 bills.

Now the term insurance company has asked for an employer certificate, which asks details of all medical leaves and medical bills claimed by office.

Now there is mismatch in medical leaves and the bills claimed, would there be any issue or the claim be rejected because the medical leaves don't match the medical records and the bill we submitted to office.

    Thank You

Deal with parking lot vs Insurance?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 04:24 PM PDT

Our new Tesla Model Y was damaged by a valet parking attendant in NYC (we live in NJ), after a lot of follow up they scrolled accepted the liability.

We are being quoted 15K for the repair, and most body shops are saying it's difficult to deal with parking lots because they are self insured and will do everything to delay the process or payouts.

We have the option to go with our insurance and let them subrogate the money from the parking lot. Are there any downsides to this? Increase in premium even though we were not at fault?

Also this is a 3 week old car and I am wondering if there's a way to claim diminished value? Appreciate any suggestions.

Questions about loss history on home owners insurance (TX)

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 06:18 PM PDT

Recently, when I was receiving rate quotes from USAA an item on my loss history came up that wasn't mine.

In 2015 I sold a home in Texas to my father, with which I share the same name. In 2019 he put in a claim for a new roof and its now showing up in my loss history. I explained this to USAA and they gave me the 800 number to LexisNexis to have this corrected.

    My questions are:

Would this item on my loss history impact my rates?

Should I bother wrestling with LexisNexis to get this item removed?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Question about Enterprise rental car + young renter fee

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 05:25 PM PDT

    Hey there,

Someone recently hit my parked car, and I went to their insurance company (MetLife) to avoid having any claim on my insurance and avoid paying my deductible. They have accepted full liability for the accident and provided me with a reservation at Enterprise, but given my age is under 25, they stated that if there is any young renter fee that applies, they would not pay it! I checked the Enterprise website, and their FAQ states that I would be paying $64.50/day as I am in New York State...

Is there something here that I am missing? I am *hoping* that the young renter fee is waived because I am reserving through an insurance company due to my car being at the shop, but MetLife exclusively said that they won't pay it if it exists, which makes me worry. This would also feel incredibly unfair, as this was at no fault of my own, I can't afford to pay that and I need a vehicle, and I'm completely SOL if that's the case. Any insight is appreciated.

No idea what insurance we need

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 05:02 PM PDT

We are selling our home and are due to close on the 22nd of June. We haven't found a home we want to buy yet, so we are moving 95% of our things into storage and then traveling for a couple of weeks visiting family. After that, we have booked a month long AirBNB stay. What kind of insurance do we need to cover what we have at the storage unit and whatever we bring to the airbnn rental? Any suggestions? Thanks! We are in Georgia.

What are the major pains in Insurance industry?

I am working on my startup idea based on InsureTech. I'm currently in validation process and I'd like to know the following:

    - was there any instance where you realized that a process could be faster in terms of claims?

    - was there any instance where you had really bad experience?

I hit someone and now am unsure on how to proceed

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 07:24 PM PDT

I was making a right when the car in front of me started going, I looked left to see no traffic and then saw that the car in front of me brakes, I ended up hitting them as I was braking, honestly did not know I hit them until I saw them pull to the side. We get out exchange info and contact information. We also take pictures, there is no damage on my car and what looks like paint transfer on her car but I did not touch it to see if I felt a scratch. My question is how do I proceed, am I supposed to call my insurance or wait to see if she files a claim, should I call her and offer to pay out of pocket? I was kind of panicked at the scene so we didn't talk about how to proceed on whether or not I should do out of pocket or whether or not she was going to file a claim. Any advice is appreciated

Does it really matter which agent I picked?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 12:59 PM PDT

Hi, I recently opened a new renters insurance policy with a national insurance company.

When I was signing up for the policy online, the website randomly assigned me a local agent, but also let me choose a different agent, if I wanted to.

Does it really make a difference which agent I picked? Wouldn't the service be about the same because it's a national insurance company anyway?

I paid for my surgery in full, if my mother submitted the claim for me (I am still under her policy) should I receive what is covered back?

    Posted: 09 Jun 2021 12:41 PM PDT

Last summer I had to get all four of my wisdom teeth extracted, and it was expensive. I had to pay for it in full at the time of the surgery, and afterwards submit it to my insurance. A small bit was covered by my student health plan, but most of it was supposed to be covered by my mother's insurance. I gave her the paperwork for her to submit for a claim. It has been almost a year and I havent heard back about it. I called the insurance company today to ask about it and whether or not it has been processed or if something went wrong. They could confirm that it was processed. In NOVEMBER. But they could not give me any more information (how much was covered, when it was received, IF anything was covered, etc) because I am not the owner of the plan. I messaged my mom about this and she said she would call, but this whole time has seemed oblivious about the whole thing, always saying she hasn't heard anything. I would like to believe her, but just in case, if she recieved the amount covered and did not return that money to me, the person who paid for the surgery, is that legal?
