What is the right way to go about verifying that a freelancer's portfolio work truly is his own?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 01:37 AM PDT

I am searching a frontend dev freelancer on Upwork.

I have been contacted by one freelancer who gave me a list of high-quality websites he claims to have developed himself but none of the websites accredit him with the development in the footer (as is customary).

How can I verify that this truly is his work? Should I:

    1. contact a handful of the websites and ask them to confirm this (most likely will not get a reply as they might fear that I am a competitor or just couldn't be bothered)
    2. ask the freelancer for proof (TrustPilot, GoogleReviews, or the equivalent)

    Tips for opening a business?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:04 PM PDT

I've been wanting to open a bakery for about 5 years. I'm a professional pastry chef and have worked in many different settings so far.

I think i'm reaching the point where I may be able to open a business in the next few years, but I don't know how to do it in terms of money.

Should I form a business to host an Airbnb type rental?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 06:11 PM PDT

We own 6 acres and have decide to rent a couple of campsites on hipcamp.com. I was curious if y'all think it would be beneficial to get a business license ($100 in our state) so that I can have some additional liability protection and also write off things like a generator, outhouse rental, etc?

Bonus question! I own a s-corp that already has a small business that is a "doing business as" business making a food product that we sell in stores. If I should start a business for the hipcamp revenue, can I just add another DBA to my S-corp?

    How EVs reshape industry

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Tesla Model S Plaid broke 0-60 records and other Teslas have broken safety records. Its the EV era. So I wanted to talk about how increasing EV use will change businesses.

There are a lot of parts in ICE vehicles that are not in a Tesla. I made a list linked here. So everything from engine to transmission are not inside a Tesla.

Demand for engine parts will decline. Businesses like AutoZone, Baxters, Napa pretty much sell stuff you'd use in ICE vehicles. I'd stop by for a quart of oil, an oil filter, spark plugs, belts. Also mechanics. Take it to the mechanic to fix some spark plugs, get an oil change at oil can henry's. Nope. Doesn't happen anymore. Jiffy Lube will be gone soon.

Next lets mention oil. Teslas don't need gas, engine oil, transmission fluid, etc. Your Valvoline, Castrol, Penzoil, Mobil 1. Don't need it! Gas is huge too, just think about it. Think of just gas stations. How they have to employ people to run the store -- but also pay contracts to truckers to drive the gas to locations. You need some gas for the trucks themselves too. There is huge industry around oil extraction. Companies like Haliburton and BP who drill, extract, process, then ship the oil. It uses fuel to drill and then more fuel to ship it from the middle east on a barge to USA. Then have huge Semis drive it out to a gas station. This seems so inefficient. So many steps to the process. All this will be gone in 20 years. Deep water horizon caused how many billions in damages?

Demand for electricity will increase. Tech for electricity is improving, which means cost per mile will decline over time. And cost per mile is already better than gas. Demand for solar panels and wind farms will continue to grow. 10-20% of the energy the sun hits solar panels with is converted to electricity. The rest is lost to heat. Wind generated electricity is surprisingly promising. This is because solar works by the sun, duh, therefore only works when its daytime giving a ~50% uptime potential. Uptime is also limited by cloudy days, rainy days and such. Meanwhile you can do wind at night and in the rain all the same. Areas will likely do both to diversify.

Anyways I'll wrap it up. Just seems like Tesla has really achieved that disruptive potential that we see in Amazon. The ability to ripple out and affect many many industries.

One of three partners bought out by the corporation itself, how are the shares divided between remaining shareholders?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 11:23 AM PDT

When a private company with three owners buys out one of the partners, how are the purchased shares divided between the remaining two partners?

For example, one owner has 55 percent and another owner 7 percent of current shares, the corporation then buys out the 38 percent owner. How is the 38 percent divided between the larger and smaller owners?

    Thank you.

I plan on opening a Taco Stand in the Midwest, how hard is it to find restaurant employees?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:30 AM PDT

    Greetings business owners,

I have decided that I want to open a taco stand in the Midwest, I have heard that companies are struggling to find talent especially in food service.

I have heard that the market rate for food workers is about $11-13/hour in the Midwest, is that true? For fellow restaurant owners, what do you pay your employees? What does your turnover rate look like?

I'm thinking of just paying my workers $15/hour to attract better quality workers. Any thoughts about the hiring process and mistakes to avoid, thank you.

What meetings reveal about your company culture

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:11 AM PDT

Meetings are opportunities, they're not just about satisfying an objective.

Want to get a quick read on your company culture? Just look at your meetings. It's all there: interpersonal relationships, power dynamics, team camaraderie. For many organizations, meetings are a reflection of the company's broader processes and health. It's no surprise, then, that the most effective teams have transformed meetings into a force for alignment, engagement, and efficiency.

We hear it all the time: better meetings can transform team culture. We call these "10X Meetings."

    The benefits of 10X Meetings

All good meetings have an objective. But viewing meetings only this way misses the bigger picture. You have a far greater opportunity on your hands. Just think: a meeting is the number one place for live, real-time interpersonal communication at work, a primary channel for debate and discussion.

10X Meetings strive to be the time and place where culture is demonstrated and set. They acknowledge that a meeting's objective must be met, but it's also an opportunity to strengthen team alignment, influence team culture, and demonstrate strong leadership. We call them 10X because of the disproportionate impact a meeting like this can have. Having the team together (physical or online) and focused on one objective provides the ultimate forum.

In other words, the benefits of 10X Meetings continue well past the end of the calendar event. And that's because the culture has effectively been nurtured and practiced and agreed upon in the meeting room.

Does anybody have any tips that they use for better meetings? Drop them below!!

Be an opportunist and accept connection, or be a realist and politely decline?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 07:41 AM PDT

Someone I know knows I'm in the job market and has offered to connect me with their colleague about the colleague's post about a job opportunity. The colleague is deep up in a big tech.

I've already tried with their company and got rejected without a referral.

I looked at the posting and it requires far more experience than I have.

How do I handle this? Be an opportunist and take that connection – likely leading to a fail – or politely decline?

edit: this is totally the wrong sub, eh?
