Visit our YouTube Channel Won Connect CIC for useful tips and tutorials.

    ————–

For many of us this past year meant studying, working, and operating in the digital environment to a lesser or greater extent. Perhaps, you finally had the time to explore all the options that Excel has to offer or you decided to enrol in some online courses to learn more about the content creation for your business. Whatever the case, you probably developed some new abilities that you want to enhance moving forward. It would be a shame to simply forget all these valuable skills.

So how to keep your computer skills moving?

Firstly, think about what you want to improve next and identify the specific skills that will be useful for you. This could be career-related or not, but the important thing is (as is the case with everything else) that you set yourself achievable goals. You might want to research what skills are currently sought after in your professional field and what ones are particularly helpful to have on your resume. Here are some handy lists that can help:

It is worth checking these out periodically to ensure that you have the most up-to-date knowledge. However, if you're still a beginner when it comes to the digital world you might want to cover the basics of computers and the Internet, so you don't get too overwhelmed by everything that you see on such lists. But don't despair, there is a variety of courses that can help you at the start of journey.

Secondly, make use of the available online resources. YouTube can be an incredibly helpful and straightforward source of information when you want to brush up on certain digital skills and see how something is done in simple, step-by-step tutorial videos. For instance, here are our takes on how to unsend an email in Gmail or delete browser history in Google Chrome. Take it one step at a time and you'll soon become more comfortable performing your share of daily virtual tasks.

Client is difficult to get ahold of, and payment is almost due.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:13 AM PDT

Hello! So lemme give you all the details:

I'm a one man band video production company. I've been working on two commissions for a local small business over the last 4/5 months.

Written into my terms were two revisions for each video. The client has been bad at maintaining contact all throughout the process, sometimes many weeks between correspondence which has made adding the revisions a really long and drawn out process!

I'm trying to nail this last revision but I'm waiting two(ish) weeks between answers, and now their inbox has stopped receiving emails altogether. I reached out to them via Instagram (where we have communicated before) and they haven't replied there yet either…

A project that should have only taken a couple of weeks has been drawn out for a silly amount of time now and I'm just not sure how to move forward with them now?

    Any advice much appreciated!

    Cheers

What is the single most impactful avenue to invest funds in my business in order to scale? Am I missing something?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:35 AM PDT

Context: Online Women's wear boutique, 2 years in business, 1 sale a week organically, growing IG and FB page, growing blog on site. Recently transitioned from dropship model to carrying all inventory in house (huge financial investment to make this happen). Currently have two models/influencers that I pay $75 per item/post and give them the clothes they model for free.. I also model the majority of my clothes. I've done FB/IG/Google ads sporadically but always end up shutting them down after a couple of days. Have invested in freelancers here and there to tighten up my shop. I currently run my social media myself.

Question: After 2 years in business I need to start making profit. I have told my models that I will dial back on the amount of clothes I give them and pay them to promote. Was that a good call? What is the single most impactful avenue I should invest my money in to begin to scale? I believe I've done that by transitioning away from drop shipping. Is there anything else I should think about? I can DM my site to those interested.

Thank you very much . Sorry if this isn't clear. Willing to answer qs in the chat🙏🏿

How I went from high school to building a $ 1M income business

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:46 PM PDT

English isn't my first language, I'm from Colombia. Yet, I want to share my history with you.

Back in 2008, I was finishing my last year in high school. In that year I got a job as a salesman in a small home appliance business. The owner was a successful businesswoman, but in recent years she was struggling to be profitable due to bad deals, employee robberies, and lack of flexibility to adapt his product portfolio to the customer's needs.

the business was specialized in fans and air conditioners and my boss bought them in the port, due to that, she was away 80% of his time.

In the beginning, I realized that customers were not looking only for fans, but home appliances like stoves, refrigerators, TVs, and others. Yet, my boss was skeptical, she had been selling fans for 20 years and was reluctant to include other products in his portfolio.

In my first month in the job, she couldn't pay me, so I proposed to her to let me sell other products in the store, in that way, she shouldn't pay me. she agreed, so I borrowed some money from my father and bought 4 stoves for 400 USD. I sold it in 3 days with a profit of 160 USD.

Throughout the first 3 months, I repeated the same formula, buy a product a later resell it with a margin of 30% to 40%, converting my 400 dollars to 4.6K. Since I was living with my parents I saved all the proceeds and reinvested them into the business.

In the fourth month, I met a supplier of chairs, stoves, refrigerators, and luxury fans. After a quick negotiation, he gave me 5K of credit, which I used in a week.

My boss saw my success and ask me for a percentage of my sales, instead of doing that, I negotiate to take charge of all operational and overhead expenses of the store (public services, lease, maintenance, etc). At that moment my sales were only 10% of all the store's sales, but I was confident about what I would achieve. In December of 2008, I had my first 10k sales month.

For 2009 I started my bachelor's in economics, so I had not much time. due to that, I decided to hire my first employee. The first one was a total mistake, the sales immediately dropped 50%. In one month I fired him a hire another. This time the results were better, she was a better seller than me and enjoyed her work. I focused my time on manage inventory, make payments, a negotiate with suppliers. I hadn't time to spare.

From 2009 to 2013, the business grew up slowly to revenue of 30k/monthly, it was working even without me. After I finished my bachelor's degree I concentrate more on the business, my former boss became my partner and was looking for her retirement. I got a banking job and my business was running smoothly without my presence

In 2016, she offered me his store, so I bought it. I take $100K debt and took full control of the store. That year I hire the other 2 employees, finished the year with sales of $560K and more than 100 SKU.

In 2018, the next store closed and I bought it, expand my portfolio to 300 SKU, hire more employees and get sales of $810K.

In 2019 my numbers were: 10 employees, $1.1M in revenue, $242K in net income, and bought a warehouse for $90K. While I continued with my finance job, doing $40K a year (For Colombian standards is a pretty great wage).

I'm 28 years old. I managed to build a $1M business, with a system that allows me not to be involved in all the decisions that are made. All the money that I had made is to build that system and buy assets to expanded and make it bigger. Some people ask me, why do I keep my banking job or why don't I work as the manager in my business.

I have decided in that way, my profit is less, but that allows me to focus on growth, strategy, and other opportunities.

Wanting to purchase a successful business and don’t really know the questions to ask or steps to take.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:15 PM PDT

I am working for a print/mail shop and the owner wants to sell. He is asking ~$280k for it and it is a very busy shop. I believe I could pay back a loan on that within the time frame as he didn't really lose much during COVID and he is back to pre-COVID job flow already.

I know I will need a loan. I have finally found a local bank that has a commercial lender. I have the application but it is super confusing. His business is currently a corporation. If I purchase his corporation there are bonuses such as the accounts with the bank and unemployment will follow it. What are the bonuses if I make a new corporation and just buy the assets? Is that better or worse?

What steps should I be taking and question a should I be asking? Is there a place to find grants to help with down payments, as I do not have any savings to help with that? Is it necessary to have a down payment?

Any guidance would be very appreciated!

Covid vs Loneliness: How to fight social isolation

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 03:56 AM PDT

Visit our YouTube Channel Won Connect CIC for useful tips and tutorials.

This last year has been challenging and due to the many restrictions in place we've all probably experienced loneliness to a much larger extent than ever before. Social isolation, while necessary in these trying circumstances, can be extremely dreadful. Extended periods of isolation might have detrimental effect on our mental and physical well-being, so it is important to take steps to keep busy.

There is no denying that it is not an easy task to overcome such an intense emotion as loneliness without reaching out to others. However right now, it may not be possible to do so in person. This is precisely why digital inclusion is so crucial. Online environment gives us an opportunity to get in touch with family, friends, professionals, or services more easily and within minutes we can feel more part of a community. We are here to improve your connectivity with others and provide you with the tools that will make this experience less daunting – be sure to see what our Computer courses and Digital Training Programme have to offer.

In the meantime, there are certain things that will help to boost your mood:

Use this time to find new hobbies

When we've got nothing but time to spare it's only natural that we start to dwell on negative thoughts, which in turn only increases our sense of loneliness. The best cure for that is finding an activity that will successfully occupy our mind and time. There is no shortage of activities that we can engage in – even in lockdown. For instance, physical activity is always an excellent way to get more energy. Even something as simple as a walk might make a big difference – it can help with that cabin fever we've all been struggling with and your body will thank you by releasing endorphins and improving your mood almost instantaneously.

Or you can get your creative juices flowing and try your hand at drawing or writing. Who knows, maybe there is a secret talent that you've had all this time and never really got a chance to explore?

Make the most of everyday interactions

While it is certainly much more difficult to engage with others at the moment it isn't impossible. Cherish these little moments when you bump into your neighbour or somebody strikes up a conversation with you at the park. As long as you keep a safe distance from them and wear a mask there's no reason why you should avoid those around you completely. A little wave or a quick exchange might make somebody's day.

Set up phone dates with your friends and family

Something that I personally found to be helpful is making sure that I stay in touch with those close to me. Whether it's just a text in the morning, a couple of photos during the week, or a scheduled chat every Sunday. The chances are that others are feeling just as lonely as you and you're just a phone call away from rekindling an old friendship.

    Declutter your house

A home renovation or a thorough cleaning of the house might just be the right solution. It is a good way to keep busy for a decent amount of time and the results are always satisfying to see. Clean house, clear mind!

    Consider contacting a helpline

If none of these measures seem like enough, remember that there are plenty of organisations out there that provide a constant 24-hour support of health professionals who will help you find the best solution and course of care in your current situation. You can find a list of such organisations and charities summarised on the NHS

However, I have 0 add to carts and 0 purchases. When you click on the link to buy my product, it automatically goes to the product page which is said to be better than targeting your audience to the home page.

    My website is softerseat.com

I am 15 years old and this is my second store currently. Any critism is appreciated.

Ideal cofounder for a techy starting a web agency startup?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:50 PM PDT

I am in the process of setting up a web design & development agency. A few weeks into it and I am already overwhelmed with just how many hats such a business requires me to wear.

I am considering bringing a cofounder into this.

My strengths are backend dev and hosting. I am willing to learn organizational skills (bookkeeping and project management).

My weaknesses are UI UX design, frontend dev, digital marketing and sales.

I have enough experience with frontend to know how to subcontract and manage an inhouse team further down the line.

As for sales and digital marketing, no experience whatsoever, I doubt I'd be any good at it and even if so, it would be mentally taxing since I am of a creative disposition. I feel like I am selling my soul and would risk losing any motivation to continue running such a business.

So my question is, given my skillset and experience, which partner can complement me best: 1. A frontend designer and developer 2. A sales/marketing guy 3. Both?

Also question about inventory—how many of each piece would be a good number to have on hand?

For acquisitions, I understand lenders want to see a business plan. Do I use the typical business plan layout or is there specific sections that banks want to see?

Owe in $1,400 for an incorporated?? Don't have that!! Help please??

    Posted: 31 May 2021 06:00 PM PDT

I failed to dissolve an 'incorporated' under my name in the state of New York. I built it when I messing around years ago thinking making an inc under my name would be beneficial for my creative work (way too easy to make if these are the consequences!!)

I've lived in CA for three years, received a letter from NYS Taxation and Finance saying I owe $1400 in total of taxes, fees, and interest for not filing taxes this year. I've never filed for this inc before and am caught by surprise.

Letter mentions possible collections if not paid in two weeks, a number to call, and the option to look into being exempt but a condition for exemption is having filed an Article 9-A franchise tax return and having marked it as last. Which i certainly never did.

What can I do? I certainly don't have $1,400!! And i've read on reddit that I could ignore this. Is that true? Thank you so much for your help.

Purchasing Carbon Offset / Carbon Removal credits - any experience?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 05:30 PM PDT

If a small business is considering making a shift to a sustainability plan, can this be done by purchasing Carbon Offset or Carbon Removal credits from a marketplace and treated as Business Expenses?

Would purchased carbon credits be charged to a new G/L in the Chart of Accounts to show the cost of the program e.g. "Utilities: Carbon Credits," or would be better to allocate the carbon offset costs for air travel, auto travel to Travel Expenses and other carbon offset charged to Electricity, for example?

I know that some marketplaces sell Carbon credits from 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, so I also wonder if a purchase from one of those companies would be treated as a Charitable Contribution.

EDIT: American Airlines has partnered with cooleffect.org. They have some information on their website, and it seems they will sell carbon offset credits and since they are a non-profit, it seems that 90% of purchase cost can be a charitable contribution.

Finally, I wonder if any of the new legislation would allow any tax deductions in 2021 and beyond for purchased carbon capture credits. I know there is legislation and IRS guidance on companies actually doing carbon capture and building technology to accomplish that, which is different.

    Buying Running Business?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:28 PM PDT

Hi, total newb here. I'm looking for some advice on getting a small business loan (around 20k) to buy an already working business. My boss is branching out into opening a small chain of businesses in another field and offered to give me a pretty decent deal on the graphics company I have been working at for about 4 years now. Just for some info, I do know the business is doing well as of now and turns some fairly decent profit. I would receive all previous customers and most if not all would trust the owner change: being that I have been the one working on their cars and such anyways. I am not in the position to have any collateral. (I don't fully own my car and rent a room from a family member) Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

What was the FIRST thing that you did to 'Brand' your Small Business?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:50 PM PDT

From your personal experience, how have you undertaken the task of branding your idea, startup or small business? I'm interested in hearing out the process from individuals who had minimal cash & resources to achieve this - especially those that weren't in a position to engage a professional designer.

    • What was the first thing you did? Was it a google search for a logo creator, a specific type of document (e.g. business cards)?
    • How did you establish the framework for managing your brands consistency? Did you define a specific set of brand colors, font-pairings, standard imagery etc or did you just 'wing it'?
    • Did you gravitate towards using templated designs (e.g Canva)?
    • Did you use a single source to acquire all of the branded assets you required?
    • (If applicable) How did you transition from managing your brand internally to engaging a professional/external designer? Was there much (if any) technical debt and/or costs associated with the transition?

To give a little context; I'm part of a team who have recently launched a product that automates the brand creation & management process (you're able to add your existing brand elements, or create a brand entirely from scratch). We then use these brand elements to automatically produce hundreds of different print & digital branded designs (including business cards, email signatures, pull up banners, social media profiles, letterheads etc). We're currently targeting the "solopreneur", startup & small business market.

We're finding it difficult to understand how best to position our application as a (what we believe to be) 'transformative branding solution'. It seems that (gathered from our Google Trends research) a lot of individuals approach their initial branding process by either searching for places to acquire/generate a logo, or a specific asset type like business cards. Very few people are searching for a complete branding solution.

I'm very interested & eager to hear about your branding experiences & the route that you took. I appreciate it significantly!

Estimating Income for Taxes on a New Part-Time Business

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:39 PM PDT

I've been a teacher for 31 years (and counting). By day I teach Culinary Arts. At night, over weekends, and on holidays, I make candles that look and smell like real food. Pictured here is a hotdog in a bun candle.

    https://imgur.com/LbovLtn

Here is a glazed berry tart candle.

    https://imgur.com/KYDkUAr

I live in Nevada where a business license for a sole proprietorship costs $200/year. I've applied for an exemption to this fee. Nevada allows exemptions for home hobbyists as long as the gross income is equal or less than 66 2/3% of the current minimum wage.

The application for the business license was pretty straight forward. While I was on-line, the system prompted me to file my information with the state tax office. I've been stymied by one of the questions.

What is your anticipated annual income?

Since I've never done this before, I have no idea. I googled this and found that new candlemakers earn an average between $500 and $1000 per month. Most candle makers make votives or pillars. There are only a few who make food themed candles. I have no idea what to report for an anticipated annual income.

Part of my problem is that I'm not not ready to sell anything. I wanted a license so I could deduct the cost of supplies on my next income tax. I'm still in the process of product testing and design. I'm building a website to blog about my experience in starting a business. I'm slowly building inventory. I've also created a small series of production demonstration/promotional videos to release to Tik Tok. I was planning to start selling my candles one year from now.

What do you think I should report for my anticipated annual income?

One crossover skill from teaching Culinary Arts is that I know about production costs. The production cost for the hot dog candle is $3.88 not including the cost of packaging which I have not yet determined.

Would a minimum projected sale price of $20 for a hot dog candle be unreasonable or should I raise the price since nobody else (that I can find on the internet) makes these?

How to approach a small business owner about discussing a possible sale

    Posted: 31 May 2021 07:33 PM PDT

Same at title. What I would like to know is what is ethical and what is not in terms of approaching a small business owner to discuss a potential sale. Would it be in good faith try to find a business from google and contact the owner to see if the owner is interested in discussing whether or not they are interested in selling their business now or sometime in the future. Obviously I would not let the employees find out someone is interested in buying the business and make sure that the current business is not hurt in any way. I would try to speak directly to the owner and give him/her my contact so they can let me know if they ever decide to sell their business. I was not sure of the ethics of this and wanted to ask you guys how you would approach this situation before I did anything.
