    Los Angeles Area Startup Resources

    Posted: 08 May 2021 05:09 PM PDT

Startup Redditors, I am moving to LA from Arizona where I co-founded a biomedical device startup. I am the company right now, and need to find / understand the entrepreneurial ecosystem in LA. The company is 4.5 years old, spun out of the University of Arizona in Tucson. I know the startup environment and players in Tucson and Phoenix, but not in LA.

I am not a rookie. This is my 12th startup. I have mentored researchers and aspiring entrepreneurs through the local startup entity and the university (I-Corps, both NSF and NIH). I will gladly contribute insights on a quid pro quo basis.

Any advice and information on Los Angeles startup resources would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Short term contractor agreements -- minimum pay?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:08 AM PDT

I have a couple people who are contributing to my company's code base for free. Not much work, just a couple friends who like tinkering on similar things, etc. I'm based in Utah and am forming a Delaware C-Corp (currently in the process of incorporating)
Lawyer suggested that I use a Short term consultant agreement to make sure that their work becomes the company's IP and said " and pay them some cash (can be modest) in return ".

This all makes sense to me but I'm curious if by paying them, do I not open myself to liabilities around paying too little? I understand that the pay would be project based so it doesn't need to be calculated at an hourly wage (which then would be under the minimum federal contractor wage), but if I pay someone $50 for a chunk of code which is obviously at least $500 worth of effort, is that okay as long as we both agreed on the terms?

One of these people lives in Canada and while I'm not sure why them being intl would change anything, I would love any insight if that's something I need to dig into more.

    Thanks!

Working with Senior Executive: Tips & Tricks?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:08 AM PDT

    1. Do you have any tips & tricks on working with senior executives? The kind of executives who knows much more than you and bring years of experience to the table?
    2. As our company is growing, I am having to bring onboard and work with senior executives who blur the lines between advisor and team member.
    3. As a first time founder, I am struggling a bit in keeping them on task/deliverable while also listening to their advice.
    4. Any learnings from your personal experience greatly appreciated!

    How to raise investment?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:26 AM PDT

We are a music based startup which enables musicians to connect network and collaborate with other musicians from all around the world. We have a working prototype with 1200+ users signed up in the first month of launch. We want to raise capital (seed) to create a core team for the project and start developing a mobile app for the same. As this is our first startup we don't know how to go about getting investment, whom to apply and what to expect.

    Please guide us.

Employee going in partial leave with uncertain duration - how to change compensation structure?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 02:28 PM PDT

Hi All, i have a senior employee that needs to go on a leave with uncertain return, during which he she would like to support the company to the best of her ability. We agreed to change her comp structure to less salary and less vesting during that time. How do I do this? Is it necessary to terminate the original employment and St start a new one, or is there a less invasive way to accomplish the same? Thank you for any advice!

    Do all startups need insurance?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:40 AM PDT

My startup has a couple of apps that provide an on-demand service for customers. I haven't got insurance yet because I'm not sure how much we need it, if we even need it at all. We have no employees, so we shouldn't need workers comp yet, but should I look into getting general liability insurance, or is it not necessary at this stage of the business?

Do surveys make sense in 2021?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 08:21 AM PDT

Hi, I am developing a startup and need feedback from young people, I just need to do market research on about 1-2k people. I don't have any experience with this type of marketing at all :(

    • Do you have any experience in commissioning surveys?
    • What do you think are the biggest disadvantages of this way of getting feedback?
    • What should I pay attention to?
    • What is a good price per completed survey?

How do I calculate profit from this points system?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:33 AM PDT

I have to make a financial plan for my app that uses a points system which users can either buy to use for a service or provide the same service to earn them. Well obviously I need to profit somehow of this, if I used plain money I would just enforce the commission. This is my first time developing so I'm really confused, any help is welcome.

Is it still viable to base a startup around an app on Google Play or the App store?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 05:19 PM PDT

I have heard statistics saying that 1 out of 10000 apps are financially successful and this just got me really unmotivated. Are these statistics even reliable? My dream is to have my own startup that has several apps but now it just feels like a far-fetched dream. It just seems more like a lottery. Should I even bother? Any advice regarding the validity of such statistics and any advice in general regarding phone apps would be much appreciated.

Implement a 6-month free period or MVP then paid right away?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 05:04 PM PDT

I am working on a landlord, tenant communications service where the MVP will be a chat system that is basic but designed to focus on landlord and tenant communications. I have a long list of features to implement some are quick others not so much. I originally was going to 'launch' my MVP as the free tier version of the service then add the paid version on as fast as I could. I have been thinking about how to get the most number of users on the service as fast as possible and was thinking that since my costs are low I could do 6 months of free all-access then once I gather a good bit of feedback I could implement it as well as implement a payment system at that time. I was thinking that I could make it clear on my pricing page that it was free for the first 6 months I am operating - I'd give a date on the ending period - while having prices and features defined there as well so customers would know what to expect when I implement payment.

Does this seem like a reasonable thing to do in order to get feedback and have some users who would be familiar with the service and therefore want to continue using the service after the free period? I would love to charge day one though my worry there is slower user growth and therefore less feedback.

Some context on development time frame:

    MVP 1-2 months

    Basic paid tier 3-6 months

    Growth paid tier 12-24 months

Add buffer to second and third cycles to account for user feedback.

    Ungrateful Boss at a Startup

    Posted: 07 May 2021 03:36 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Dunno why I'm posting (possibly to vent), but hoping others can also share their ungrateful boss stories. Basically been at a startup since day 1 and have literally gone over and beyond my required jobs working long hours, doing technical stuff that no-one else can.

Today my boss had a go at me. We had a board meeting for which he needed a powerpoint presentation. The initial presentation had to be rebuilt from scratch and I built the entire thing from scratch within a day (was pretty hefty > 50 slides, very data heavy). I then sent of the deck to a co-worker who put in their slides, but was essentially blamed for the mistakes they made.

I explained to my boss that the fault wasn't really mine. But to be honest it feels completely disrespectful especially since a day ago he was praising me for completing the deck. I also feel like my inputs are sidelined and not really appreciated, which feels incredibly strange. Feel like I should quit.

Anyone else ever dealt with an ungrateful boss? How did you deal with it?
