In early attempts I went in knowing very little. You've all seen the videos "Start a XYZ company with $0 and 0 experience." These guys made it look so easy to earn, and I quote, "10k per month" with minimal effort and cost. I had 2 clients in the early days out of sheer luck, which I retained for some time, but eventually I was let go, mostly due to my lack of knowledge of the services I was offering. This led to the downfall of my original agency. Later, I had taught myself quite a bit, specifically improving my web design skills, along with better advertising practices, and improved graphic design ability. In this time I launched 2 or 3 agencies, each lasting for no longer than a month. When I didn't achieve immediate success like YouTube promised me, I gave up. After a while, I gave up on my dream of owning a digital marketing agency. I used my web design skills to build other businesses, mainly an e-commerce store, which was ultimately unsuccessful as well. This was a crushing blow to my self esteem and aspirations of being an entrepreneur. After some serious reflection I realized the cause of all of my problems was ME. I want to get rich quick. I never committed 100%, I just wanted easy money, and I wanted it now. I never worked out of passion, only greed, and that's a surefire way to fail. The truth is no one jumps into any form of business and instantly earns money. There are months, YEARS, of struggle to even come close to earning a liveable wage. Over the past few months, working on personal projects to further improve my knowledge, I noticed just how awesome it is having this skill set. That feeling I got when I finished a site of mine was unbeatable. I'm not selling a website, or help with social media, I'm selling a small business owner the ability to get online and really take their business to the next level in a digital world. I've just launched my last and final digital marketing agency. I intend to give this all my effort, and all my attention. Nothing happens overnight, and I have to stick with it through thick and thin if this is truly my dream. If my efforts fail at least I will know I gave it my best. My message to anyone in a similar situation is to assess WHY you keep failing. Yes, there's bad luck like we saw with the pandemic causing so many small businesses to go under. However, these events are rare, and most of the time your business fails because you aren't working hard enough or are in it for the wrong reasons, plain and simple. Expanding an IT Support Business When Many Clients Only Want YOU - Need Advice Posted: 30 May 2021 12:56 AM PDT Hi Everyone, I am the founder of an IT support company based in NYC. Our clients are mainly individuals and small businesses, and we specialize in providing on-site support on an hourly (as needed) basis. I began by providing computer training to handful of family and friends over 20 years ago when I was a high school student. It was a great part time gig that gave me a nice income while I was in college. I didn't know it at the time, but that gig would eventually become my career. That initial group of family and friends started recommending me to others, and I soon found myself with a rapidly growing client base exclusively via word of mouth. Eventually I realized the long-term potential of the business and I quit everything else I was doing to focus on it exclusively. Until around 2012 I was a one man show, but I was struggling to keep up with the growing demand; I either had to raise my rates extensively to try to keep demand in check, or bring on more help. My clients are fiercely loyal to me and I probably could have gotten away with the former, but it was always very important to me to retain my company values of providing rapid turnaround and affordable service. I also did not want to risk losing some less affluent clients and become just a "boutique" service that caters to the wealthy. As a result, I decided that the best way to scale the business while keeping my values was to hire another tech. Since then, the business has continued to expand and be very successful. I've had various other techs working for me over the years, and we were always able to keep our rates affordable while continuing to maintain our rapid response times. However, our expansion was not without a major caveat - a certain percentage of our clients (both new and old) have always refused to work with anybody but ME directly. For years, this was not a major issue because I wasn't as busy, I love "being in the trenches" and I love seeing our clients. Many of them are fascinating people, and I enjoy not only solving all their technical problems, but their company as well. I've been told the feeling is mutual. In fact, many of my more elderly clients have even told me they enjoy the companionship as much as the tech support itself. But now I am faced with a huge dilemma. Over the last year, there has been a rapid and major increase in demand for our services (in large part due to COVID and the expansion of remote work). As a result, the clients who continue to insist that they will work only with me are now often forced to wait weeks to see me. Although I offer them the opportunity to work with my other very capable techs who can no doubt solve their technical problems, most of them still elect to wait. I feel terrible about this, because it goes against my company's values. In the past, I would have just seen some of these clients at midnight or done whatever it took to see them in a reasonable time frame. However, my personal circumstances have recently changed - I will soon have a family and I am no longer willing to work excessively late hours on a regular basis. So I now have a major decision to make and I am hoping for some advice. Do I simply force my clients who insist only on seeing me to wait as long as it takes for me to be available? Do I raise my rates extensively for seeing me directly (e.g. seeing me directly will cost 50%-75% more than seeing my other techs), or is there some other way to manage this? What is the best way to track ones' hours? Surely no one works 8 full hours when working 9 am - 5 pm, there are natural breaks (eating, bathroom, social media, sending some texts). But what if someone doesn't want to overcompensate by working until like 7 pm every day (if they are scoped to only work 40 hrs a week)? I've been reading about section 105-HRA benefits etc., and wondering if I can make my wife as an employee of my 1099 self employment work since she would be helping with programming/testing and pay her just fringe benefits (not W2 salary) ? I grew up in a very celebratory family. We always had tons of events. Now that I'm older I was looking to create a second income stream via photo booths. My ideal position in the market would be upscale, more adult type events. I see photo booths all the time at all age events, but the market Id like to target is more company based or adult group based events. The costs of my services, due to me purchasing high grade equipment falling on one person is always on my mind. (ex: a backyard birthday party usually paid for by parents) Where as a corporate event being more lucrative and NOT falling on the check book of a single person but more so a possible tax write off for an entity fits better with my plan. Posted: 29 May 2021 12:03 PM PDT We get our stock from a European company that uses Fed Ex to our PO box in Oregon. Got delivery notification. Went to PO to pick up. Had a locker key in the box. The wrong item was in the locker. "Oops, the new guy switched the keys. The package was already picked up by them". Not to mention that this package was very delayed already, I am now in a bind with customers (will be offering refunds and free upgrades) WHAT is my recourse with the Post Office? The package is insured... TIA! EDIT: I told the postal supervisor I was going to have to get the police involved because my property was taken off the premises (there is no way it was an honest mistake, the package weighs over 40 lbs) and my insurance would only cover the loss if I had a police report. He then called the other people and... they said they would bring it back in... fingers crossed as he, the supervisor, is going on a month long vacation as of today, lol. [link] [comments] |

I just started an online small business trying to encourage people to live sustainably and buy from ethical shops (like mine). The website sells handmade kids clothing and eco products like reusable bags and zero waste sponge. I started it because I love sewing and I truly believe that if everybody buy from small businesses , people can earn a Fair wage instead of being undercut by big corporations who mass produce and underpay workers. And also reduce waste cos we don't over-consume. It's been 3 months and I have been working very hard but still zero sales. I'm feeling super demoralize. Yelp advertising cost increases rapidly with spend Posted: 29 May 2021 02:38 PM PDT I am looking for a good way to market my wife's restaurant business and given our sales are down 85% due to covid-19 I thought I would give yelp another try, to let customers know we are still open. Her bakery is in a populated city. I have seen this occur several times and want to know if it's common and also maybe warn people about it. When I spend $5 a day with a 7 mile radius my cost per click is $.20. When I spend $500 a day my cost per click jumps to $1.50. In terms of outcome we saw about $100 a day increase in revenue although I know sometimes customers need to see the ad several times. However I fear I will not get the returns I am looking for if I ran this for an entire month. Maybe a marketing expert can explain if that is a wrong assumption to make here? Even though the yelp sales rep claim that their audience is so big it is difficult to overcome the bidding price, that doesn't seem to be the case at all. It seems hard to believe that an individual can increase prices like this in an area however it happens everytime I have tried. I would guess unless your business has high margins, maybe keep the spend low on yelp if you plan to use it at all. (I know there are reports of yelp using their review system to force businesses to pay for advertising. I believe that is not yelp direct but the pressure put on their sales reps forcing them to do questionable things. This is not about that.) [link] [comments] |
