    My Side Hustle Thesis

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:49 AM PDT

Today I will be investing in a high-end Drone with a 4K Camera on it.

Reason for this is that I will market myself to Real Estate Agents or home owners stating that I can do drone footage of their property (places you wouldn't be able to picture using the standard photography shoot they do)

I'm going to create a demo video on my own property as sample clip and then create a business model and website completely before I start to market my service.

I did research already and this area of hustle is barely tapped into and what agent wouldn't want an aerial view of the property they're trying to sell?

Thoughts and criticisms are greatly appreciated

Write Your Own Destiny, Or Someone Else Will...

    Posted: 09 May 2021 04:58 PM PDT

My name is Tim and for a long time I worked in the construction industry for a rather large company. Now this company was great and it supplied me and my family for quite some time, until one day the company was bought out and new management was put into play. This new management was terrible and looked at everyone as just another number, and after a while I'll be honest I was just fed up with it. I decided that I had to leave immediately and I did. I went on to open my own small construction business, and truthfully it was a lot of work I wasn't use to. I was only use to doing hard labor, but now I had to learn all these new skills being a business owner. I've since then made the adjustment, but let me tell you this. Many people will tell you that being an entrepreneur or owning a business is too risky, but I'd say it's more risky to depend on a single person or business for your livelihood. Go out there, start your own business, and kill it because if you don't write your destiny somebody else will.

My Personal Journey as a Tech Founder

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:16 AM PDT

Ah, the seductive appeal of writing your own destiny..

I apologize to be the negative guy in this community about entrepreneurship but I would like to share my experience down this very road. It is not the rosy garden that we read about in magazines like Forbes or Entrepreneur.

A few years ago, I decided to quit my job and become a tech founder. I did my PhD in ECE from Purdue. So I have a technical background but definitely not a coder/developer. Any tech company requires software development and I wanted to make apps that make people happier, more productive and spend time with their loved ones. We make social deduction games and a pretty cool productivity app. I will not name these apps or post links as this is not an excuse to promote my own products.

Here is what happened on my entrepreneurial journey (get popcorn):

    1. Hired app developer agency to build the product. The first 2 agencies I hired all made lofty promises and agreed to the allocated budget (some even came in under budget). All of these dev agencies failed to live up to the terms of the agreement and cheated me out of a lot of money. Some said they could not finish and abandoned the project. Others produced such poor quality work that I had to let them go. They all refused to refund and instead gave me source-code for like 20% of the project, which is less than useless. Anyone in the software industry knows developers hate working on someone else's code and would rather chew glass. Its always "shit" if someone else wrote the code.
    2. Then I decided to bring the development process in-house and hired developers & graphic designers. Due to sky-high costs of developers in US, I had to hire overseas. I bootstrapped my startup and was in no position to pay $200k starting salary to US-based developers (I needed 3-4 devs). I had good luck with hiring great UI/UX designers and node.js (backend) developers. But very bad luck with frontend developers. 2 of them made great promises during interview but ultimately could not perform anywhere near what is required. A lot of lies and deception and so much time/money lost. The 3rd frontend developer stole the company MBP and vanished. Returned it only after I threatened reporting him to police. Another guy passed the interview, accepted the job offer and never showed up.
    3. I had to go back to hiring a dev agency to do the frontend. After yet another bad experience, I finally found an honest dev shop who would actually finish and produce a high-quality app according to my design and specs. Even then, the contract was for 6 months. They ended up taking 14 months to finish and 20% over budget. Making my startup's flagship product took 7 attempts (3 failures by dev agencies, 3 failures by in-house devs). Instead of 1 year, it took 3 years. Yes, it was a complex and very difficult project but still a very painful process for a solo-founder to go through. I could not give up on it and finally reached iOS app store this January (2021)
    4. The app store has nearly 2 million apps and you will quickly find yourself dying in obscurity. Apple Search Ads (ASA) wants $5 per tap. That is per tap, not even per install. So that means over $10 per install, for a free app. This is well beyond my means and makes no business sense. Huge corporations like Microsoft & Google are bidding on the same keywords on ASA that I needed for my app. That is why the bid was as high as $5. It makes zero sense that startups have to compete with tech giants to get exposure on the app store. But apparently, it is just supply & demand!
    5. I tried to promote my apps on Reddit. Even on self-promotion Saturdays, my posts were auto-removed. Apparently I did not have enough karma, my account was not old enough and did not meet other requirements like 1:10 ratio of self promotion posts to regular posts. Many reddit communities don't even let you post anything without a large karma. So I am not sure how I will meet the 1:10 ratio. :) I eventually found 2 subreddits where I was allowed to post but never got any traction (stuck at 1 upvote). I did not cheat the system by using fake accounts or ask my friends to upvote the thread like others are regularly doing to keep their post on top or "hot". Even today, not one person has seen my reddit posts about my apps.
    6. I spent over $200 on a Press Release but that turns out to be just another scam. Paid $100 for "premium PR service" at Newswirejet. Their report said the press release was published on more than 200 websites. I got zero downloads & zero traction from the PR. There are endless scams out there all preying on startup founders.
    7. Product Hunt is a very promising site to launch your startup. But there is so much BS. You need a superstar "hunter" to hunt/launch your product. These hunters are basically product hunt influencers and have a large following (10k plus). So when they hunt your product, their huge base gets emailed and gives you immediate traction. Even though it is against PH rules to charge for a hunt, lo and behold.. every single "super hunter" I reached out to have asked for money. Obscene amounts in some cases, like $500 per hour. I am speechless.
    8. I reached out 50+ YouTube influencers and vast majority either did not get the email (junk folder) or bother to reply. A few replied and want $10k for a 2-minute mention in their video. A dedicated video will be $50k to over $100k. Meanwhile they are happy to make the millionth video on Apple Airtags for exactly $0. But if a startup requests a review, suddenly it is time to demand ridiculous amounts of money!

On a bright note, we released a total of five apps on the app store and our social games have over 1000 customers and we are getting $50 per month in ad revenue. :) People seem to love the games and consistently play over 1 hour once they start! These things make me happy and give me hope that once people find out about the apps, they will love it and keep coming back for more game nights full of fun and laughter. :)

Anyone wanting to do a startup should prepare for such a journey as this is typical and not the exception. Companies like FB, Snapchat, Instagram are the exceptions and by definition happen almost never. There is a reason why 95% of startups fail. Be prepared for the long haul, a lot of lies and deception, going well over budget and beyond schedule. Get ready to make serious sacrifices on the way.

In the end, it may work out but there are no guarantees in life. Apology for the lengthy post but I feel the harsh reality should be discussed and I just wanted to share my experience as an entrepreneur. Lets not romanticize entrepreneurship too much and lose touch with reality!

    Regards,
    A Tired Entrepreneur

4 Quick tips for creating better Facebook Ads

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:15 AM PDT

Like any creative endeavor, ad creation has some pitfalls. Here are some tips to help you avoid mucking up your Facebook ads...

    1. Always Have Captions I've seen ads where the viewer (including myself) has no idea what's going on when they have the sound off. Rather than expecting every viewer to turn their sound on, just add captions.

    2. Get to the Point in the First 3 Seconds This one is self explanatory. Your ad needs to get to the point, quickly, if you want to keep the viewer from getting bored.

    3. Be Clear, Rather Than Clever If you can come up with a witty ad that also gets the point across without wasting time, then that's awesome! Just make sure you're not sacrificing the clarity of your message for some cute or funny spectacle.

    4. Keep it concise I think we've all seen ads that are close to two minutes (or longer) that are a total drag to sit through. What's worse is when you can't even tell what the product is. Keep your ads clear and concise. To put a timebox on it, ads should ideally be less than 30 seconds.

Those Are the Golden Rules Just like everything in life that's worthwhile, learning how to create fun, engaging ads while remaining clear and concise takes time.

I hope that these tips will help you navigate the world of Facebook ads with more confidence and creativity.

If you have any questions or feedback for me, feel free to contact me here.

For those of you who have hired a business advisor/ consultant, what was your experience like? Was it worth it?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 12:54 PM PDT

President of a fairly new business (just under a year), looks like it will be fairly profitable but a lot of things feel very, for lack of a better word, messy. It's very tempting to look for a consultant to help organization, hopefully increase profits, suggest ideas for hiring or anything else we could be doing better. What's everyone's thoughts on the topic?

What's a good name for an all purpose LLC? Can I have one LLC for multiple companies?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 05:13 AM PDT

Hello, I want to start an LLC for a website I've been working on. I don't know if this website will fail or not but if it does, I want to reuse the LLC for the next idea. Can I reuse an LLC and what's a good name for a general purpose LLC? For example, my current project might be related to stocks and the next might be for pet food. If I need to include the LLC name somewhere on the website I would want it to be an all-purpose name. Do any of you have an all-purpose LLC name? If so, what is it? Thank you.

    Entrepreneur brainstorming place

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:55 AM PDT

Hey redittors hole you are all doing well!

I've been wanting for a while now to create some sort of an entrepreneur chatroom/voicerooms where we can all help each other grow, work together and brainstorm ideas with each other. Main problem I had in mind was that some may try to sell courses and services to others. Hence I want to make this a hand picked community with a VERY strict set of rules. That way we can ensure a good educational and a buisness environment. Connections is one of the most important things in buisness aswell as this place will be for all sides of the entrepreneurial community. From online to physical buisnesses.

I'd love to hear your guys thoughts about it. Much love.

How Entrepreneurs Are Combining Data and Tech to Compete With Large Retailers

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:01 PM PDT

With people spending more time at home over the past year, it's not surprising that online shopping has increased exponentially. Ecommerce was up an astounding 44% year-over-year in 2020, according to estimates from Digital Commerce 360, while McKinsey reported that 10 years of ecommerce growth occurred in just 90 days in 2020. However, there's a lot more to this story than simply the surge in online shopping habits.

Though major online marketplaces still dominate, sales for some actually declined in 2020. The beneficiaries of this trend were niche brands and small businesses, which embraced technology and saw online sales surge. This "long-tail" growth is one of the most intriguing aspects of the new COVID-influenced economy and has attracted the attention of major companies in the retail ecosystem. Walmart, for example, has removed rules requiring sellers on its marketplace to be registered in the U.S., a move to court more small brands from around the globe and compete with other retailers. FedEx also announced an alliance with BigCommerce last April to help "small and medium businesses get up and running online fast and affordably." Additionally, GS1 US, the administrator of the UPC barcode system, created a new option for small brands to more easily and affordably get their products set up with legitimate product identification — a necessity to distinguish reputable businesses from fraudulent brands in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Of course, small retail businesses have experienced major challenges and setbacks over the last 12 months, but their focus on innovation indicates a strong outlook. To fuel growth, retail entrepreneurs are bringing data and technology together to compete against larger retailers online in three areas.

Sales Tax Nexus - What do you recommend?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:42 AM PDT

So just as the title suggest - I am using Shopify and Avalara to calculate sales tax, which works great, but I am looking for a turn key solution for filing in multiple jurisdictions. (Avalara wasn't it).

If you're using a trustworthy firm / CPA / accountant that is up to speed with nexus laws post them up.

Will this take my business to the next level?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:27 AM PDT

Hello, everyone! I own a web development company where we create websites and apps, and while it is doing well, I am wanting advice on how to take it to the next level and find clients.

I had an idea on how to grow and expand my business, but was wanting other's opinions. To give some context, we primarily create large scale websites from scratch. This gave me the idea of creating a website that contains images for website design inspiration. From there, we could advertise our business to create these websites that are represented in the images. We also had another idea of implementing a cost calculator that links back to our website so that people can get an estimate on how much it costs to build a web or mobile app.

What do you think? Are these good ideas? I am open to other ideas as well! :)

Is it possible to start a very niche Dropshipping store and still be highly successful?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:28 AM PDT

I am planning to start a niche Dropshipping store, that only targets 2-3 types of kitchen products.

Now, I plan to grow this store in future and get atleast 10k sales/month.

Is that possible to achieve that kind of sales from a niche Dropshipping store? or should I expand my niche and add more types of products?

    Thanks

Is there a way to filter LinkedIn connections that I haven't yet spoken with?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:26 AM PDT

I'm trying to send out fresh campaign proposals to investors in our LinkedIn network. However, we've accumulated around 9,000 connections, around half of these have already received older proposals and I'm struggling to find a way to open conversation with those that remain. Rather than manually sift through around 4k+ connections to see if they'd been messaged before, is there a smarter way to do this? Currently none of the usual filter options offer this function. Wondered if you guys knew of any suitable scripts of tricks to bring up a list. Thanks

    Would this work?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:48 AM PDT

I am thinking of starting a business wherein people can have a personal assistant to do simple tasks like sending an email, managing their social media accounts, answering youtube channel comments, researching about something. This would be at a very low price of around $200 per month and one personal assistant will work only for one client. How? I am here in india, and the salaries are very low and now there is a huge unemployment all Thanks to the new dictator prime Minister.

So, would people be interested in something like this?

Need help with my graduation speech

    Posted: 10 May 2021 06:32 AM PDT

So I just got told that I have been chosen to give a speech to my whole grade (200 persons) + parents and teachers for my graduation.

The topic is entrepreneurship and I'm kind of concerned that everyone in there is going to be put to sleep as a big percentage of the grade did not even choose the subject and they are all thinking about the party we are gonna be having afterwards.

What is a good way to make my speech funny or at least entertaining while talking about the subject and maybe inspiring some people (as after all the speech is about entrepreneurship)? tysm!

    The isolation of an entrepreneur

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:44 PM PDT

Hopefully some of you might be able to relate & help support me. I used to be the life of the party, had lots of friends, was involved in things like fantasy football, or get togethers, or going to college football games & tailgating with my buddies, but as I've grown up, gotten married, had 2 kids, & had snakes that I thought were my friends steal business ideas & start them in another city (& failed/had to sale out for basically nothing), along with seeing how 70-80% of the employees I hire do not give a shit to really excel in life & just does the bear minimum at everything including their job description. I've come to realize I don't have but 1 true friend & even we don't hang out much. We text everyday or every other day, but really just about stocks or other things within that spectrum (he actually has his head together & strives for greatness too), I've come to realize I've really isolated myself & enjoy it a little too much. But it also gives me a negative perspective on people in general. I can't understand why someone is content with not trying to come up with ideas to better serve society & talks about clothes or celebrities, or even sports which have always been my thing. Was a very talented athlete in my prime.

I own a small business that employs around 20 people & my gross revenue is well over $2,000,000 a year, my wife is a degree'd accountant who stays at home with our kids & the majority of people I do try to get to know just thinks we are loaded with lots of money, but in truth we aren't. I started the business 9 years ago & the first year barely brought in $50k in revenue. 2nd year maybe $100k & it wasn't until 2-3 years ago that we finally started really bringing in what I initially thought we would bring in. In theory it probably does look like we have a lot of money from the outside looking in, & we can pretty much live comfortable in terms of never going without, but the reality of it is, I've thrown literally everything we make back into the business for it to continue to have success. I drive a 2013 truck with 225,000 miles on it & most of my employees have nicer vehicles than me. Lol. My wife drives a 2016 GMC Yukon that we bought from a previous employee who was "upgrading" & it has 120,000 miles on it. I came from a shitty childhood where my father was in prison from the time I was 3 until I was 18 due to being a drug addict, and my mom was a daycare teacher who was AN AWESOME MOM & a true teacher who made you believe in yourself. They both died within a year of each other at age 55 & 56 & I was left to pay for their funerals since my siblings don't really have the money to help. I was left with no life insurance policy or trust funds that's for sure.

When I do try to make new friends they are always turned off by the fact that I mainly talk about business & how I hope I can change the world & leave it in a better place! Their interests are generally in way different things than mine. I also don't trust getting too close to other like minded entrepreneurs bc I've been snaked several times over. I have trust issues clearly. The last thing I want is some trust fund baby to copy my model & have lots more money than I have. That's a dangerous place, although I know not all business owners have trust funds & I know execution can't be denied.

Is this an issue with me, or is this just part of the game? I certainly would love more social interactions, but I clearly have no interest in small talk anymore. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Anyone here sell in Walmart brick and mortar stores? I have a shot. Just curious what it's like scaling up to meet Walmart demands.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 04:52 PM PDT

I may get to talk with Walmart shortly.

I sell a personal health product on Shopify, Amazon and Walmart.com, and it's done pretty well (passed the 1M annual revenue mark somewhat recently). I think it'd do well at Walmart brick and mortar stores, and I have many customers who ask about its availability there.

It could be a challenge to suddenly try to scale up to meet Walmart demands. Do they let you get some time to ramp up (my product takes 10 weeks to manufacture)?

What size first orders do they usually make?

How long does it take to get paid by them?

Was selling in Walmart a game-changer for you? Was it even profitable?

App/Software Idea: Caption app/software for businesses to buy for HoH and Deaf employees

    Posted: 10 May 2021 04:07 AM PDT

I am HoH and wear hearing aids. I don't hear well on the phone at all and cannot get through a phone call without captions. Captioning software has come a long way in personal apps, entertainment, and even in conferencing software, but there are gaps and I see a lot of complaints in r/deaf about the humiliation the deaf and HoH suffer in not being able to hear colleagues in meetings, on the phone, etc. (a humiliation I know well). For example, in conferencing software, the user cannot use the captioning feature unless the host turns that on. Phone calls with tech are a nightmare. And many options allow for intellectual property to get leaked. I'd like to create caption software that businesses can use to not only protect their IP, but give a more integrated experience to people who have a disability but are perfectly capable doing their jobs with a little computerized assistance. Current solutions force employees to solve this problem piecemeal.

    Thoughts?

Who do you call when trying to find out what licenses and permits you need for your business?

I’m looking for someone who would license my ideas. I have several. Many are fun/toys/electronics, but there are also devices to really help people, mainly the disabled. I won’t ask for absurd amounts of money. Small percentage royalties paid to my company are fine. I want to help/make a change.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 05:41 PM PDT

Apologies for the long title. Hello! Melting Brain Studios is ready to get products licensed out to people/companies who can really do something magical with them. I want to entertain, I want to make a difference, I want to help. I own website domains for most of the products and the others have available domains as well. There's also drawings with dimensions for each. The more money my company can get from licensing deals, the more reach I can get and more products can get made. I'm willing to start small and be patient, because I know my time will come. I can't wait to meet!
