My dream is to open a rare plant shop, where should I start?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:39 AM PDT

I currently sell plants and other plant-related art on Etsy, but my dream is to have a brick and mortor shop somewhere in my city selling rare tropical plants and art. Is starting an online shop a good idea at first? Currently, I source my plants from my own collection, meaning I propagate and grow everything from my mother plants. However, I know that most shops outsource their stuff from sellers overseas. I want to try to source my plants locally or from my own collection for the most part due to some of the sketchy practices some rare plant growers overseas are known for.

Another question I have is if I open an LLC for my online business right now, can I write off the supplies that I buy for my plants such as fertilizer, soil, etc.?

I have never owned a business or anything, so I just don't really know where/how to start. Any advice is appreciated! I know I probably sound like a noob, but everyone starts somewhere lol.

Edit: Thank you so much for the advice! Y'all are so great, what a supportive community this is :)

Best way to do cold emails

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:38 PM PDT

Cold emailing has changed my life, I got clients, deals, and funding through cold emailing and I thought I would share few tips that made my cold emails stand out:

    • keep your emails short, 2 paragraphs 8-10 sentences max. get to the point! You don't need to ramble on for 5 minutes. Just keep it short, avoid sugar coating (people see through it), and have a clear next step for them.
    • solve a problem for them -- this is tougher, but if you know your target segment you know people ALWAYS have problems with something like order fulfillment, or shipping times, etc.. find a solution that they can implement literally after they read the email, and send it over to them. Try and avoid a ton of 'sell' stuff after that, do the nice thing, solve the problem, then leave your contact info, don't push them down a funnel, let them come to you.
    • find a way to relate to them --- go on their LinkedIn and find something you share an interest in, capitalize on it
    • personalize, personalize, personalize. people get 120 emails a day on average, make yours stand out by personalizing it!

if you find personalizing emails a difficult and time-consuming process, I'm currently building a tool that generates personalized cold emails that adapt to each individual. to get early access sign up here: https://mailchi.mp/3446cf20090b/hotreach

For tax purposes, is it better to run down your inventory on-hand for tallying your year-end inventory? Or better to keep things stocked and report a higher total dollar amount?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 09:45 PM PDT

If I can pay less on taxes by running my inventory low at year-end, and thus reporting that lower dollar amount to my CPA, then wouldn't that be a good strategy? Or do I have it backwards, and I actually want to report a bigger dollar amount (bulk up at year-end)?

    Fake reviews

    Posted: 10 May 2021 02:38 PM PDT

It's just so odd to me why people come up with fake stories and reviews to smear my small business. One person got caught stealing, was asked to leave and shortly after we received a fake review claiming I was being messy and racist(?). Then today I see a thread on a local group by two women claiming we are rude to children and don't allow kids to dine in. We haven't allowed anyone to dine in since last year because of the pandemic. Even when others clarified this they keep saying the owner(me) claimed kids can't eat inside because they're messy.

I'm autistic and running a business, so sometimes people just think I'm rude because I don't always make eye contact and sometimes too overstimulated to make small talk with every customer. But it's really upsetting and wearing on me that people do things like this. I've never done those things and I don't know why they'd claim such a thing.

    Family investment in LLC

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:46 PM PDT

I have an LLC I use for my residential real estate business.

I buy land/old homes cash and get a construction loan to build then sell.

My dad wants to get into the same business but will be unable to secure a loan from the bank.

Is there an agreement I can enter into with him where he gives the LLC the money for the land and the LLC purchases the land and takes out the loan instead of him? We were wondering about the tax liability issues we could run into.

    Thanks

we built a voice-first messaging app for remote teams

    Posted: 11 May 2021 02:45 AM PDT

    Hey Guys 👋

We're super excited to announce the launch of Echoes. My name is Adam, I'm Co-founder @ Echoes. Making great products needs collaboration, but losing face-to-face spontaneous conversations slows down the decision-making everyday. After we starting work remotely since the pandemic, We have been looking for fast communication tools that can make team closer yet not fatigued. Unfortunately we didn't find it, so we created Echoes.

Echoes makes communication in remote as seamless as in the office:

🎤 Voice-first messaging: Using voice messages can ensure seamless communication while reducing zoom fatigue.

⚡️ Global shortcut keys: No matter what app you are working on, you can always speak directly to your teammates, not breaking workflow.

🎧 Autoplay: Voice messages will be played automatically. If you don't want to be disturbed, messages will not be auto-played for you.

🚽 Smart status: Status will change automatically when people are not available.

🧑🏼‍💻 No missed messages: You can catch up on conversations after you come back, just like an old-fashioned answering machine.

Echoes is great for small remote teams communicating and collaborating. It has completely changed the way we communicate, and we can't wait to share it with everyone. We are currently in the beta version and looking forward to your free trial and feedback. My team and I will be around all day and would love to hear your feedback!

Selling Milk/ Dairy products in India ?

    Posted: 11 May 2021 01:20 AM PDT

Hi, I have an old dairy farm belonging to my family, comprising of 150 HF and Jersey cows that so want to revive. How can I sell milk/ alternate products in the market ? ( India or export outside) What are high selling products in the market? Should one go for B2B or B2C selling? In my limited exp I think B2C rubs off more expensive in the Indian market.

Considering the ongoing pandemic, any suggestions to revive this old family business would be helpful.

About to try a lead generating buisness and I feel paralyzed by fear. Need advice

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

Long story short I have been trying to be self employed for a year and everything failed. Didn't gain anything. Was unemployed for a long time and became a homeless. I realized now that I can't trust strangers to control my fate like that again. I feel so much pressure to find a way to be self employed. Last idea I have now is lead a generating business. I have the idea planned out and the site ready to launch. Its just I am introverted and my past failures are making me paralyzed by fear. Because I kinda know if this fails I have no other ideas left and I will fail in life again. Need advice to take this leap of faith.

What Are Some Different Forms Of Payment Plans

    Posted: 11 May 2021 12:19 AM PDT

So a little bit about me and my business is I run a digital marketing company that specializes in SEO and Website Design. I recently made a post on r/SEO about landing my second customer and talked about the sliding pay scale I use. Essentially the client would pay me monthly but they would start off by paying me $300, and eventually would increase it to $500 once they were on the second page of google, then up it $750 once they were on the first page. Now I thought this was a great idea, but many people seemed to think otherwise. Obviously it would change based on the industry and level of competition. But was I wrong in doing this? and what are some other ways to set up payment plans for customers who don't have much money to start out?

    Storage lot

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:43 AM PDT

So my dad is retired and met this guy that lives in our area that owns a storage lot. It is a RV, Boat and trailer storage lot. It is a very basic business with hardly any overhead if any. Five years ago this guy purchased 12 acres of land and cleared it. There's no electricity, buildings, concrete, etc. it's simply just cleared land with gravel. It has a simple automatic gate to enter the storage lot. Depending on the size of your RV, Boat or trailer depends on your monthly rent. The contract is very simple basically stating he's not responsible for any damage, theft, etc. There are about 300 renters. He said his average renter pays $80 a month. He's making a good $25,000 a month. This guy is very old school and still uses filing cabinets to keep track of his customers.

My dad is thinking about buying some land to do this same concept. Currently looking at half an acre for $100,000. This would roughly hold 40 small RVs, boats and trailers. The other guys storage lot is not very aesthetically pleasing and doesn't really stand out.. yet he has about 300 or so renters. I know for sure my dad would be able landscape and make his storage lot visually appealing if he decides to start his own. He wants to keep the same simple concept of no electricity, buildings or concrete. Basically no overhead on the property except liability insurance and property fees.

What are some other things that could be implemented to stand out?

    Bolts, Screw, Nuts Recycling?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:54 PM PDT

Business. Take used screws, bolts, nuts from large businesses. Pay way more than scrap rates.

    Machine sort them and resell.

This idea isn't unique but I don't see anyone doing it. I see the cities telling citizens to scrap it.

Why do you think other people haven't done this?

    Pros

I have background in automation, so machine sorting is doable.

    Metal recycling is $0.10/lb. here

I live in big city so it's not too much logistics to pick up the bolts etc

    Cons

Liability of selling used fasteners? I can put disclaimer on package.

Distribution? Shipping direct is too expensive. Who would want to wholesale purchase used fasteners?

I want to design a new shed, how do I go about getting it designed and produced?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 07:53 PM PDT

I have a general idea of what I'm thinking and a mock blueprint. But I want to get an actual design done by an expert to be able to take it to a manufacturer.

For those who have designed and produced their own product, how do I get started? I don't even know what to Google or search for.

Any keywords or crumbs to follow?

Planning to start a small business with a friend, how should I go about this? Any tip or advice would help. Thank you.

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:34 PM PDT

My friend and I are planning to start a small clothing business together. It was my idea and I was the one who did the research and found the suppliers, etc.

Our plan is that I will provide 100% of the capital and all the initial expenses and she will do most of the marketing and sales later on bc I have a quite busy schedule.

That is all that we have talked about, so far. We will talk about how we would split the profits soon and I want to have an idea on how we should go about it. How many percent should she get? What should we do if I already earned my capital back?

I know that it is an important subject to discuss with her and I want to be clear with it as much as possible. I don't want any confusion in the future that would be bad for business.

Any tips or advice would help. Thank you!

Taking over my partnership business that i use to share with my ex girlfriend

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:29 PM PDT

So i'm wanting to fully take over the business that i shared with my ex-girlfriend. It's a clothing brand that sells vintage wear. We started in August last year and have turned over $34000 in revenue and have around $10000 in stock. The business was largely her idea in the beginning and i decided to do a 50/50 ownership with her.

As i said, i wanted to take over completely and she's happy to hand it over, however she believes she's entitled to a certain % of profits which of course i agree with.

I just want to figure out the best way to go about this and how to make it fair for the both of us. Cheers

Is it weird to tell a merchant that you will take the loss of a product that you bought from them that you never received in the mail?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 10:46 PM PDT

I don't know where to post this so I decided to post this here. If this isn't an appropriate place to post this then the mods can delete this post.

I ordered some Vitamin K from a health store online almost two weeks ago and I never received it. Either the package was lost or stolen by UPS. I filed a lost/stolen mail claim and I contacted the merchant a few days later to see if they received the refund for the lost package from UPS. After I asked them did they receive the refund from UPS, I also asked them if they could put the money in my bank account so I could reorder the item through USPS. 10 minutes later I get an email saying that they shipped a replacement. They also replied back in 10 minutes saying, "Oh that's okay we have shipped you a replacement on the house. Thank you!"

I feel bad that they have to take the loss. I want to email them back and tell them I will just pay for the item because I don't like to see merchants I care about take the loss. But I think they'd probably think I'm being weird. Would they probably think I'm being overly nice or virtue signaling if I ask them if they would just like for me to pay for the item? I think that me asking them for the money so I could reorder the item might make me look like a bad customer. It's hard to explain this.

Brick and mortar store owners - when first starting do you think it would’ve been helpful to have an established industry peer alongside you?

Has anyone tried Radio ads? How was your experience?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I've opened a family oriented brick and mortar small business in a medium sized city, which pulls people from about 20 miles away (pretty much all of the metro area).

I've been considering radio ads and wondering what other people's experiences have been like?

    How's the ROI?

How do you measure it since you don't know where people are necessarily hearing about you?

    Thanks!

Who to contact to get work at and on a school?

    Posted: 10 May 2021 08:27 PM PDT

Recently I have started a mobile and in house (my garage) window screen repair business and I am looking into getting my business into schools but I am stuck on who I should contact. Drove by a local school and from the road, I was able to see holes and bad screens which made me think to reach out to as many as I can before school starts again.

With Covid, I cannot just walk into a school locally.

Has anyone tried doing any type of work for a school before and can you share some advice? I don't know if I should call the school itself, board of education, town/city, county, etc.

    Thanks!
