Legal Advice As a Sikh, my clinical site is mandating that I shave my beard.

As a Sikh, my clinical site is mandating that I shave my beard.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 08:41 AM PDT

Hello, all. Throwaway because I don't want to be discovered by the corporates.

I am in second semester of nursing school and we are all required to be fit-tested for the N-95 masks. I am a Sikh and my religion forbids me from shaving or cutting any part of my beard.

I know that there are alternative loose-fitting respirators that allow facial hair, such as the CAPR and PAPR hoods. I have even volunteered to buy my own PAPR hood and bring it to clinicals.

However, the hospital has denied my request and they are mandating that I shave my beard or I will be unable to attend clinicals. I don't know what to do. I don't want to choose between my career and my religion.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Edit: I am in Tennessee, US

parents threatening to take away university tuition saved, how to proceed?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 05:36 AM PDT

Edit: I am located in Ontario, Canada and the account type is a RESP, not sure the exact type.

A couple of months ago I (18F) was kicked out of my house for a multitude of reasons (Dating a girl and being diagnosed with autism being a few). After this, I had moved in with a friend of mine and have been living with her and her parent. I've been going to school and working part time to save up enough money for a new phone (as they broke my last) and a small amount of savings.

About a week ago I was accepted into a very well-known university that would 100% secure me a good job in the future. But, with my limited savings, I would never be able to go without taking out a huge loan.

My parents have raised me enough money for the first few years in a government fund and I know that, legally, nobody is allowed take money out of that account except for me and only for my tuition. The problem is that I don't have the account number or any way to access it. The only way to do that is to ask my parents, but I'm almost positive that they'll refuse to tell me since they would threaten me with my tuition in the past. My question is that, if they don't give me the account number, is there any way for me to access the account without it or if there is another way to get the number?

Found out that our former CPA used our internal books to try to help the local bank win a legal dispute against our small business. He is on the board of this local bank. What can we do?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 06:46 AM PDT

    Key facts:

    1. We restructured mortgage debt 8 years ago with a terms sheet for the deficiency being forgiven, then we fully met the terms of the forgiveness
    2. Bank is trying to claw back $160k that they were required by contract to forgive
    3. They are using our internal books, supplied to them by our CPA at the time, in order to support their case by saying that we did not "internally recognize the forgiveness as income at the time it was supposed to be forgiven"
    4. Said CPA no longer practices personally, but still owns 1/3 of the largest local accounting firm
    5. We have it in writing from the bank that these records were supplied by this CPA, and the bank is using extremely unethical bad-faith tactics in this dispute so the gloves are off. They may be able to argue that they could've gotten the majority of this info from other sources.

I don't want blood, but if possible I would love to use this to get them to back off of trying to steal $160k from us or intimidating us into settling when we rightfully owe them nothing. What would the consequences be to this guy if we came after him or his firm on this to try to get the bank to back off?

[US]If I get "No heroic measures, No feeding tube, No life support" tattooed on my chest, would that be legally binding?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 05:21 AM PDT

I have a living will on file with my GP (Located in Kentucky), but my job requires me to travel quite a bit (Or at least it used to, before the world went crazy). Now that people are getting vaccinated and things are opening back up I'm going to have to get back on the road. If something happens when I'm not near my home I want to make sure that my wishes are respected. I keep a copy in my glove box but I don't know that that would do any good with my vehicle turned into a Mobius strip ten feet up a tree.

In the process of refinancing, we found a judgment for ‘violent crimes’ against the house but we have no idea what this is for, never received notification, or what to do. NJ

    Posted: 05 May 2021 10:32 AM PDT

New Jersey. House belongs to my girlfriend. Basically what the title says but we have no clue what this would be or where to even start. No one in the house has any criminal background or any unpaid fines even. We're in the process of getting a copy of the title search the mortgage company received so hopefully that has some details. But what could this possibly be? Could someone have stolen her identity? How could a judgment be placed on a house with no notice at all? Googled but didn't see resolving the issue of something you aren't aware of.

My brother’s ex-wife is outing my 15 yr old nephew as gay to all of his friends using social media. What can we do to stop her/protect my nephew?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 08:47 AM PDT

Hello there, please forgive the poorly written post, I'm so upset. My brother has shared custody of his two boys (15 & 13) with his ex wife but the boys live with my brother. My nephews don't talk to their mother much bc she's extremely hostile and cruel towards them. She can't last five minutes on the phone with them without insulting them or putting them down. Her latest attempts to make life miserable have been to go through my nephews friends list on social media and contact each person to announce that my nephew as gay. My nephew identifies as bisexual but has not been public about it - only recently shared this information with our family and we are all extremely supportive. Except for a best friend, my nephew had not shared his sexuality with ANY of his friends/school mates. Her messages to his friends are essentially "I want my son to know we support him for being gay and please send him words of encouragement on finally coming out gay!" She's contacting everyone of his IG/Facebook lists. It's like she's started a full on campaign to hurt him. We suspect she's doing this to punish him for choosing to live with my brother instead of her. What can we do? We're in Maryland.

    Will I Lose My License?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:31 AM PDT

Hey all, a few years ago, I switched from public school to an online home enrollment program (FLVS - I'm from Florida). However, the program my mother setup for me was called Flex, meaning that without specifically setting up EOC exams etc. at local testing sites, I won't get a diploma, and will have to get my GED. Well, I was unaware of this, and my mom didn't tell me till recently. So, I'm not getting my diploma.

However this brings me to my main question: I have the current courses I'm enrolled in, and I'm about to finish before summer. And then, I won't enroll in any more so I can study for the GED. But, in Florida, you lose your license if you dropout under 18. Is this considering dropping-out? My main concern is I have a job and have to drive to work.

Btw, I'm 17 and turn 18 in September. So, it's only a few more months. But I don't wanna lose my license.

Apartment threw away all of my clothing (literally everything I own)

    Posted: 05 May 2021 01:50 PM PDT

Long story short my in unit washer was broken for a few weeks and a part to fix it was not going to be coming in for several more weeks. I was given permission in the meantime to wash my clothes in another washer in a different unit. I was given the key and had it to myself for washing purposes for about a week. I brought over every single pair of clothes I own, 13 bags worth to wash over the next couple days (it had piled up). I put the clothes into the wash and head out for the time it takes for a cycle to complete. I come back and everything is gone and there's a fresh coat of paint in there. By some unfortunate miscommunication with my apartments staff the janitors threw away all of my clothes. We checked the trash chute and it had been taken to the dump. I have absolutely no clothing except for what was on my back. I obviously demanded to be reimbursed and made them an itemized bill. They took a look and said haha no we will give you 200 bucks go take it up with renters insurance. I contacted renters insurance and they said this is 100 percent my apartments fault and it's a civil matter that renters insurance doesn't cover. I don't know what to do. Do I sue? would it be worth it? The itemized bill for me and my boyfriends clothes came back to over 5000 dollars (everything we've owned since we were young). should I file a warrant in debt? Any help is appreciated this has been devastating. To reiterate we had full permission by management and maintenance to use that units washer, they have already apologized profusely so we know we are in the right.

My mom's husband passed away, no will, no joint accounts, she has no access to anything.

    Posted: 05 May 2021 11:12 AM PDT

    Washington State, no will

My mom has been a stay at home wife for the past 10 or so years. Her husband passed away unexpectedly last Sunday and the family is heartbroken. She doesn't really have anybody else so I am trying to help her take care of everything but there is so much and we can't get in to see a lawyer until next week.

The problem is there are still bills to be paid. Her name isn't on anything except the house, which she plans to sell. Looks like he paid some of the bills already for this month, but there are others that are set up as recurring payments, and some that need to be paid manually. I tried to figure this out myself, everything I read online says since his passing, she cannot use his funds or credit cards since she is not a joint account holder, nor a person with permission, right to access. How is she supposed to pay these bills? Do we leave it as is, allowing recurring bills to pull and figure out another way to pay the ones that don't? Do we cancel everything/switch necessary ones over to her name? We don't have the death certificate yet. There are various things such as credit cards, subscription services, car payments and insurance, phone , utilities, etc. She doesn't have any money, their system was he would give her what she needed when she wanted to buy something, and she does have a couple credit cards in her name that he would pay but she says she doesn't know the balances/credit limits (I will be helping her figure this out). She doesn't even know how much he has left in the bank, or if there's even enough for the recurring bills to pull.

We have an appt with a probate lawyer to help us on Monday, but again she doesn't have much, if any money, so unless it's absolutely necessary, is it possible for us to take care of this ourselves? I'm figuring no, considering I'm here asking for advice already. He passed away intestate, leaving my mom, and he also has adult children from before my mom (also I'm my mom's kid from first marriage, was never adopted etc I'm only involved to help my mom, I don't want a single thing )

Looks like there is a life insurance policy, possibly two, but I don't think she'll get that money in time to help her do everything.

I'm sorry my post is all over the place and asking so many different things. Thank you for any help.

Do I need to provide my family with my address for them to move forward with my grandmother's will?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 10:52 AM PDT

I'm an only child, both of my parents are deceased, and I'm estranged from the rest of my family for many good reasons. My grandmother passed away several months ago (predeceased by my grandfather). My aunt reached out to me via email just a few days ago to ask for my address, she says because my grandmother had a will and according to her the county needs a mailing address for everyone named (they are all in New York State - I am living in another state). She says they cannot move forward without my address even though there will probably be nothing left to distribute to me after the county claims what is owed to them for her nursing home fees. She also said that none of my cousins know about this process because she already has their addresses.

I do not feel comfortable giving her my residential address. What is my best path forward? Is my address really holding them up? Thank you for any guidance in advance.

Denied temporary order of protection, now what? (Missouri)

    Posted: 05 May 2021 01:00 PM PDT

As you may know, Missouri is a 50/50 custody state. The father of my daughter has been lashing out and having manic episodes for the past ten years. Since our breakup, these have gotten much worse and he now has a drinking problem. Our 9 y/o daughter witnesses his breakdowns and his excessive drinking and has driven her around drunk. It's gotten to the point where he is now harassing the babysitter and is threatening to take our daughter out of state. The cops were called last night because he kept calling and harassing me while drunk and our child was in his custody and I was worried he was going to take her out of state as he kept threatening. He also took our daughters phone and wouldn't let me speak to her. The cops didn't do anything but confirmed yes he was drinking. Today I finally filed for a temporary order of protection so I could get her after school tonight even though it's his day. I gave them all the details and expressed that I feel my child is in danger. I just found out they didn't grant the order but they did give us a court date in two weeks. He doesn't know I filed for the order but once he gets the paperwork for the court date I am worried about what he will do, so I want to pick her up today anyway. I'm worried since I am breaking courts custody orders that this will be held against me at our court date, but I'm terribly worried about our daughters safety. He will likely put her life in danger as he often does when he's upset.

Any advice on what to do?

    Shipping Medication

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:57 PM PDT

    Hello All,

My boss is abroad in the UK and recently ran out of medication. He asked me to pick up and send him his prescription. I did some quick research and found that the UK does not accept medication via shipment and suggested we should find him a UK doctor to prescribe the medication. He told me to send it anyway and see if it gets to him.

It got delayed at customs as I said it would and he was upset with me that I described it accurately on the customs form. While the act of sending him his medication is innocent I do not believe that lying on a customs form would be seen as such. In addition, items are scanned and x rayed on their way in, and an inaccurate or blank description would have only attracted more attention. I don't think UK border security is that frivolous.

Am I in the wrong here or is lying on a federal document considered perjury? I know a reasonable lawyer would probably not pursue a felony offense but is there not the possibility of a lesser charge that could carry a hefty fine?

Ex Hid Crypto During Divorce California

    Posted: 04 May 2021 10:40 PM PDT

My ex refused to disclose assets, said they had none and that they sold their crypto long ago. I didn't believe that and also didn't have the money to investigate. We moved forward with the divorce and now it seems my ex was hiding enough crypto to be able to buy a pricey home, new car and then some. All within 1.5 years post divorce when they had no money and I had to pay them out $20k.

Can I sue my ex-husband for "forcing" me to pay his tax lien?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 09:40 AM PDT

I got divorced in 2018. When we were discussing selling the house he was told that there was a lien on him that would prevent the sale until it was fulfilled. This is what was communicated to me and my divorce Attorney. In the decree I was awarded the house and he was supposed to get the lien removed. Well, it's been 2 years and he hasn't done it. I called the IRS and it turns out the lien is on him AND the house. So, I can't refinance or sell without paying this lien, which has been accruing penalties and interest for an additional 2 years. To avoid further penalties and interest I need to get the lien paid. My bank said that I could refinance and get cash out to pay the lien. It's just A LOT of money. Like over $40k at this point. I just don't know what to do. He got to keep all of assets and businesses and I got the house. Now it turns out that he got everything, plus he doesn't have to pay his taxes. We never filed joint taxes and my taxes are perfection so I'm not part of the lien in any way. If I pay them, can I sue him for the amount?

    Edit: I'm in Texas

Yes, I know I was dumb and should have known better. I didn't know at the time that he had a whole hidden life. I found out during the divorce how bad it was and am still finding out more.

Mom and dad seperated, mom is getting tax bills for dads failed business

    Posted: 05 May 2021 11:28 AM PDT

Mom and dad married 30 years in California. Dad's business shut down by covid last year. He's owned it since 1998. He had tax issues 10 years ago and had to sell off a lot of stuff to pay them.

Mom moved to Nevada 3 years ago. They're still married, but don't speak or see each other. They own a house in California with 100k left on the mortgage that my brother is paying because dad is unemployed.

Mom received 6 separate bills from the IRS on Monday, totally $65k for 2013-2018. She says they're addressed to her, but the tax id is dads social security number, if that makes any difference. It says payment is due 5/23.

She had nothing to do with the business and was never involved with any of it. I asked if she was co-owner or had ever signed anything in regards to it, and she says no.

What kind of lawyer does she need to find? Does it need to be in California? She's afraid of going to jail or losing her 401k that's she's built up since leaving dad.

Going to court over child support

    Posted: 05 May 2021 11:09 AM PDT

Trying not to make this lengthy. I live in Tennessee, US. I somewhat recently (last August), asked for the state child support office to take over the paying of child support to my ex wife instead of me paying her directly. In November, they had everything processed and asked for proof of all payments from both parties within fifteen days. I provided mine, my ex wife asked me to give her my copies so she could turn them in, and I refused.

Last month, I got a letter stating I owed 3500 in back child support. When I called, they said she(ex wife) signed an affidavit stating that I didn't pay 3500. I explained that I gave them proof of all the payments, along with a spreadsheet documenting each payment in November, they said they never reviewed it and took her(my ex wife) word for it.

Today, they called and said it is going to court, with no date yet. They said she has provided no documentation but signed a second affidavit claiming a different amount, but they won't tell me what amount.

I don't want to go to court without a lawyer, and either way, I'm out $3500. I've previously reached out to legal aid, but since I make more than minimum wage, they refused to help. With me having all the copies of every payment I gave her, as well as text messages regarding payments, as well as her asking for more than I was required, should I still get a lawyer, or just show up with what I have and hope they actually take it into consideration?

Extent of "return of company property" clause?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:31 PM PDT

I was laid off a few months ago (fortunately re-employed since), and my severance contract contains the following clause:

"Within 7 days of the Severance Date, the Employee is responsible for returning all confidential information, proprietary information and company property to the Employer. Furthermore, it is understood that the Employee will not disclose any confidential knowledge that they may have been privy to during their time of employment."

Seems pretty straightforward. The only company property I had was a Mac laptop, which I returned, and which they acknowledged receipt of.

But now, they are bugging me again because "Even though we have physical possession of the laptop, you have not complied with this section of the Agreement as the laptop is locked to your Apple ID. " and " We have been unable to remove your Apple ID from the laptop". That seems completely ridiculous to me--I don't *have* an Apple ID, as I don't own any personal Apple products--I have only ever used corporate Macs, and Apple IDs associated with company email addresses. Furthermore, I know that it is possible to reset a Mac without needing an Apple ID or password or anything, and I never had this problem when returning Mac laptops to previous employers.

Is there actually anything to this? I mean, I *gave them* their property back. Is it reasonable to interpret that clause as putting me on the hook for their subsequent IT issues?

I am in Orem, Utah, USA, and the company in question is headquartered in Provo, Utah, USA.

Hi there, I got into a car accident back in January. I had "full coverage" insurance. Long story short I had the green light but not green arrow, I made a left turn and a car hit me, making my car a total loss. I am at fault, however this is my first ever traffic offense. Is there a way to not have my driving record messed up? Can I ask the judge just for supervision? How do I plea? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can your employer force you to work an overnight shift out of nowhere?

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:22 PM PDT

For clarification, this is at a company where the employee has worked for 5 years at the same position. Hired to work only days, but with overtime if they're stuck there until later at night. Recently, the company has cut workers by a third and are now trying to force daytime workers to take 3-month stints on overnights in a rotating fashion. The employees who never before had to work nights and did not sign on to. They've been given the choice to volunteer or be let go. The law handbook states that the company can switch day workers to nights "under the grounds that the change is permanent." Is this not pretty shady, and what can this person do about this? Thanks so much for any help, it's a real bind.

    Travel agency responsible for information

    Posted: 05 May 2021 02:18 PM PDT

hello fellow Redditors, I need your help. I am from Germany and hereby apologize for any grammatical mistakes and misspelling.

My Grandparents have been vaccinated and wanted to go on a vacation. They booked one via a Travel agency but were not informed that they would need a negative pcr-result for entering the plane. They were supposed to leave the country today. They will now fly this Friday to the destination but still lost 2 days they paid for. Is the travel agency responsible for refunding the lost days?
My Grandparents were not able to get a test at the airport or close by so they drove for two hours and made the test there.

Please also provide sources for your answers if possible.

    Thank you,

    sincerely a worried granddaughter.
