    Drilled and slotted rotors

    Posted: 30 May 2021 02:55 AM PDT

I rear ended someone tonight (oops) and wanted to know if my insurance will push me around for having drilled and slotted rotors since they're not OE specific? They didn't ask about aftermarket parts when I signed the contract.

Motorcycle accident on private property (no police report)

    Posted: 29 May 2021 05:16 PM PDT

I wrecked my motorcycle early this week while on vacation (trailered bike out to the vacation destination) when leaving a rural out of state business. The business had a very steep driveway leading out of it and on the way out my rear brakes completely failed, front brake was not enough to stop the bike thus I had to steer it towards a dirt/rock hill on the side of the drive. The front tire caught and the bike flipped over a couple times. I never called the police to report the incident. We brought the trailer over and loaded the wrecked bike on it. I came home from the location the following morning as I was very sore and well the bike not being operational.

I called my insurance Thursday to file a claim, they took the details along with my asking for my friends contact info.. They called back today asking again if I did a police report and that it might be required. Are police reports always required for insurance claims? I was the only person involved in the accident. I just got the bike the previous week so still need to get title in my name (State of Michigan DMV is closed until June 1 so Michigan is sort of in limbo mode for title transfers since the start of COVID19 shutdowns). Insurance also asked what I paid for the bike (2018 model I bought used but with cash) and asking for a bill of sale the previous owner never gave me (I do still have his contact information)

Don't want to accidentally cancel my mother's insurance

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:41 AM PDT

I'm on mobile so format is probably whacked. I'll keep this brief, My mother has me on her car policy. We recently had a falling out and now I want to get my own. While getting a quote the site asked if I want them to cancel my car insurance for me. I want to click yes but I am worried it may cancel her insurance as well and I don't want to do that. During the process of setting up the quote, I only put my car and myself on the policy, so I don't believe it will but with the tension that we are having right now I want to be more safe than sorry. The sites chat is closed for the weekend so I couldn't ask there.

We live in PA outside of Philly.

Please understand I am in a very bad situation right now. I apologize for any spelling or Grammer errors. Any answer will help. Thank you.

    Insurance Claim Questions

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:08 PM PDT

    Location: Alabama

So last week my apartment complex had a 3rd party company working on repair and it caused a massive water leak. This flooded only my roommates room, all other aspects of the apartment are untouched. However, since construction is now necessary I'm having to live in a hotel to avoid the noise and focus on schoolwork. Contractors showed up yesterday without warning and I basically had to leave within the hour. My landlord is not paying for the hotel, food or anything at all upfront. I am hoping for reimbursement from the insurance agent after everything finished while everything comes out of my pocket. I've been in contact with the agent, and he's verbally promised reimbursement but nothing in writing. I'm really concerned because the hotel I'm staying at is more expensive than average (roughly 30% more). However, they're the closest to my apartment location and I don't want to be inconvenienced further with hotels away from where I work/my side of town. I'm looking into a short term sublease if the insurance agent will cover it so I can stay out of hotels. I've already told my landlord I won't be paying rent, but I have the following questions.

Should I anticipate issues due to the price of the hotel?

Should I claim food since I cannot cook?

Can I make my landlord pay for this and make him deal with the insurance company?

If I can't make my landlord pay, can I charge interest on the money spent?

Can I make a claim for time spent tracking purchases, booking hotels, documentation etc or the inconvenience of not being able to be in my home?

Could I make a claim for a security camera to insure the contractor isn't helping himself to any of my things while I'm away?

    Total loss payout

    Posted: 29 May 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Hello - I'm hoping someone in the know might be able to explain this to me.

Last Sunday, driving home from my sons, I had a deer appear out of nowhere end ended up writing my car off (it's still with the insurance as everything is slowed by covid, but my son (mechanic) and the tow truck driver and cop, all said I wasn't at fault and it would be a total loss. The car did everything it should have, crumpled, triggered the alarms and hazards. I got away with bruising and soreness.

Anyway, I checked my policy and I have something called 'removing depreciation deduction'. In looking it up, it seems to be that if the car is less than three years old, they will pay to replace the vehicle. Does that sound right?

Lastly, if they do settle at the full cost to replace the car, whatever is needed to pay out the old one, is the remainder of the settlement mine? Say, the car is worth $58 and there's $35 left owing. Does that remaining $23 belong to me, and I can take it to any dealer/dealership? I asked my insurance adjuster and he said 'oh, yes, you can work that out with the vendor'. (Note, it was a lease, but the insurance document says owned or leased, so I'm assuming it's the same).

Sorry this is a bit long. And I'm in Canada. Thank you for any clarification.

    Should I file a claim?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 07:58 PM PDT

I live in CA and I am insured through USAA. My neighbor, while parallel parking, hit my parked car and dented the front body panel above the grille. She insisted she didn't hit my car but another neighbor and my parents witnessed the collision. I was able to get her information after calling the police but they did not file an official report. Should I file a claim if my deductible is 500? I'm not sure if she would be liable since there's no police report to prove it was her.

Have some questions regarding becoming and auto adjuster

    Posted: 29 May 2021 09:49 AM PDT

In the Midwest, thinking about making a career change. I had been in IT during and for a few years after high school, became a police officer and did that for 10 years before going back to IT. Getting tired of IT so have been asking around looking for ideas and a family friend had mentioned that his brother was an adjuster for a large insurance agency, he enjoyed the work, made decent money and a Bachelors degree wasn't required (which I don't have).

I haven't been able to talk to him yet to get any info from him directly but I figured I would ask here as well. Doing auto adjusting, I see that they have a trainee position, how long does that usually last? What is the pay like during the training time? After training is over what can I expect to make? What can I expect once I get to work as far as schedule, days, hours, etc. Working in IT for a while I make decent money, but I'm ok taking a cut for a while if it isn't super significant and as long as I stick around and do a good job I will have the opportunity to get back to what I was making within a few years.

    Any help/guidance is appreciated.

Auto Insurance for Car Registered to LLC

    Posted: 29 May 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Looking into a Montana LLC as I want to collect cars throughout the course of my life. Is anyone familiar with how to get insurance on a car that is registered to a Montana LLC that I would be the owner of? Couldn't find anything online. Would be classic car insurance if that helps. If anyone could steer me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    Never accept compulsory limits?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 06:46 AM PDT

That's what I was always told. Was I misled?

Here are minimum car insurance limits in Massachusetts:

Bodily injury liability: $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident

Property damage liability: $5,000 per accident

Uninsured motorist coverage: $20,000 per person/$40,000 per accident

    Personal injury protection: $8,000

When I look at my policy, I'm paying the minimum for BI and PIP. However, I'm covering property damage for $100,000 per accident, and uninsured coverage of $100,000/$300,000.

    Thoughts?

    Hospital Insurance Scam

    Posted: 29 May 2021 04:21 PM PDT

So my wife is currently in a hospital and having a horrible experience. Told they want to admit her, but never provided a medical reason why. She was left alone in the ER (no vital checks, no meds, no food, etc.) for 6 hours.

My wife asked if she could just leave (her symptoms had subsided). She was told by multiple nurses that if she chooses to leave against medical advice (AMA) that insurance would not pay anything and she would be on the hook for entire ER bill out of pocket.

I have what I consider to be very good medical insurance (BCBS Federal Basic Option) and think this is a load of bullshit. Any thoughts?

This is a tricky one—how to avoid a total loss?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 04:13 PM PDT

Hey, I had an accident about a week ago, my car is still with the repair shop the police got it towed to, and yesterday I received an Estimate of Record from Geico adjuster. I bought my car pre-owned two years ago, it's a 2018 model, 13K miles at the purchase, now 25K. Credit Karma estimates my car value at $21,500, though I don't know how trustworthy it is.

The Estimate of Record runs at $5,500 minus my deductible $1000, so about $4500.

However, the adjuster said that he wasn't able to examine the suspension because the car is not on a forklift.

The hit was significant enough that it destroyed much of the front left side of my car, yet most importantly, the steering wheel wasn't working anymore and just from looking at the left tire and wheel, it is bent, so serious damage to suspension can't be ruled out.

Now here's my dilemma: I'd like to have the car repaired at the dealership so that they guarantee to use the original brand parts. The dealership is in NYC Manhattan, and I had the car repaired there once previously to the tune of $7000+ while the Adjuster's Estimate at that time was, I believe, about $3000.

This time, the damages are most likely more significant. The adjuster's own Estimate is higher, and it doesn't even include suspension—which may or may not turn out significant, I'm not a mechanic.

The adjuster says that I can have the vehicle repaired at Geico authorized body shop instead, and it's going to cost less, because their labor rates are $50 while the dealership's rate is about three times that.

Is there a way for me to find out the approximate price of the repairs by the dealership before I authorize them to keep the vehicle?

The adjuster says that once I bring the car to them (it gets towed to them from the current body shop in Brooklyn), a. I can't resign the car to another shop—is this true? b. A new, Manhattan-based adjuster from Geico will inspect the car again and will come up with his own Estimate. c. If that and, more importantly, the dealership's own final repair calculations turn out to be 75% of the current car value (which I'm guessing is about $21K), it can be totaled.

How realistic do you think it is that repairs with an initial estimate of $5500 can end up costing $16000? If it goes beyond $16K, they'll total it, right?

What's the most reasonable way to act here?

Obviously trying to keep the car, and also trying to get it repaired through a dealership because of the brand.

Also, how do I find out the fair market value of my car?

    Thanks!

First Canadian Protection Plan (FCPP) - Should I Get It If Buying Used Car?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 03:16 PM PDT

I am in the process of purchasing a used 2015 Mini Cooper S Countryman ALL4. The previous owner pretty much kept the car in his garage and rarely took it out -- which is why the current odometer reading is only 18,000 kms. I've already taken it for a test drive, had a Pre-Purchase Inspection done, and so far everything checks out. There are no issues with the car but the original manufacturer's warranty has expired.

The dealership where I am purchasing the car from has suggested that I purchase an extended warranty from First Canadian Protection Plans. It is:

48 month term 30,000 km (so, the expiration odometer reading will be 48,000 km)

The plan is called the "Select Plus" and it specifically states that the following are EXCLUDED:

throttle body; start light ignition batteries; zippers; windhsield wiper arms and linkage assembly; headlamp; projection lamp and tal lamp assemblies; cup holders, ashtrays, dash pads; consoles; seat frames and springs; inside and outside door handles and hinges; shock absorbers; MacPherson strut assembly (including upper mounts and bearings); pipes and hoses (except steering and air conditioning pipes and hoses), lines and rubber brake hoses (except power steering pressure hoses, steel air conditioning lines, and steel brake lines); fastening devices such as clips, nuts, bolts, fasteners, and rivets; standard transmission clutch assembly; manual clutch disc or pressure plate and related bushings and bearings; manual and hydraulic linkages; corroded cables; secondary ignition components; glass (including mirror assemblies and heated windshields); lenses; sealed beams; light bulbs; sockets, fuses, cellular phones; brake rotors and drums; components of exhaust and emission systems not specifically identified as part of the Emission System covered under section B.2; components of any Lift Kit; catalytic converter; weather strips, run channels, trim, moldings, bright metal, chrome, upholstery and carpet, pain, outside ornamentation, bumpers, body sheet metal and panels, structural body parts; sun roof frame and assemblies; tires, wheels and rims (an wheel or rim-mounted sensors)

It looks like a lot that won't be covered and, as I read this, I'm wondering if getting this plan is even worth it.

The cost for the plan is: $3704.

What should I do?! Help! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

    Claims Records & MIB Questions

    Posted: 29 May 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Some background, USA, I am 21 on my Dad's insurance policy as a dependent. He gets group health insurance through his work, and my entire family is covered. I was wondering what would happen to all of my information (claims, prescriptions that are no longer active, provider info) if we were to switch insurance companies or when I turn 26 and am no longer covered. Does the company retain these records for a period of time, or are they destroyed when I am no longer insured. There are certain things I want to do in my future career that would warrant a hefty medical records check. (please dont tell me about HIPAA, I know)

Also, can someone clarify when information gets sent to the MIB. Considering I am a dependent, would I even have a record of underwriting? I read that apparently that process doesn't apply to people on group insurance policies such as policies through work, however I have requested records from them anyway.

Can I have insurance from a different state as my drivers license.

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:29 AM PDT

    Location: Minnesota

Bit of context, I'm currently dealing with the mess of renewing my license since I was in the middle of my spring semester when it expired, and couldn't get back to renew it in time. However, I needed a valid license to go on a trip after my semester, so I tried renewing my mail, only to have it denied bc they tried to renew it as a Commercial learners permit, which I had a few years back for 6 months, and is not what I would've been renewing. At this point because of my trip I then went and got a valid license in the state my college is in by retesting road and written, however that DMV never voided my now expired MN license which is why I'm going through the hassle of trying to renew my MN license in person, since I'm still in the grace period, instead of having to retake the written exam, which I'd have to do if I transferred my out of state license.

    TLDR: see title

    Designations for Claims?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:29 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm just starting out as a Claims Trainee for an insurance company in Indiana (about 1,200 employees across the state). Just wondering what insurance designations would be most desirable if I wanted to move up the ranks in claims or in insurance in general? I've heard CPCU obviously but not familiar with the others. Thanks in advance for your advice!
