Left accounting to drive sewage truck Posted: 10 May 2021 12:24 PM PDT It is official. I have accepted an offer to drive a poop truck. This April I was let go from my tax prep position with a midsize firm almost immediately when the work slowed down and there were only about 3 1040's left in the drawer. There were zero business returns in the queue. I have decided to leave the world of accounting altogether in search of browner pastures. Wish me luck fellas! [link] [comments]
My career progression after graduating with a shitty GPA and no internships- some quasi inspiration Posted: 10 May 2021 08:49 AM PDT I graduated from an average state school with a 2.75 GPA. I worked as an AP Specialist for a few years while going to school. I realized quickly that I wasn't going to get anywhere with my AP experience, and that what I really needed to do was get a job in public accounting. I applied to every staff accountant job at every metro CPA firm, I sent emails to every partner, and relentlessly nagged until I got an interview at a really tiny firm. I then relentlessly followed up until eventually I got the job. I stayed there for 2.5 years doing audits and some tax preparation, passed the CPA exam, and started interviewing for senior accountant positions. I just accepted a Sr. Accountant job at a large company that's about to go public. I got almost of 40% pay bump, more vacation, better 401k match, and I don't have to work busy season hours anymore. Moral of the story... don't let your non-traditional start discourage you. You can still get what you want as long as you stick with your plan, and never settle. [link] [comments]
Reminder: take posts here with grain of salt Posted: 10 May 2021 11:57 AM PDT Just copying my post from another subreddit which I think relevant here This is common sense but I tend to forget about this when browsing career subreddits. I was reading comments in a post and someone wrote a VERY stupid answer and a lot of people agreed with them, so I check their profile and yup they're still in college, so basically it was a circle of college students jerking each others. I'm not bashing on college kids or anything, but just reminding you to double check whatever people say here. [link] [comments]

CPA Exam Scores Released Early! Posted: 10 May 2021 06:53 PM PDT The release date for the exam was supposed to be tomorrow but I decided to log in tonight just in case and they posted some scores already. Ended up getting a 79 in Aud and couldn't be more happy with it. I felt completely dejected leaving the exam and was sure that I had failed it. [link] [comments]
Possible to be an accountant with only hand? Posted: 10 May 2021 03:49 PM PDT I can only type with one hand. I type around 40-50 wpm. I know this is slower than average but I can't get much faster than that. I still look at the keyboard while I type and I'm kinda self conscious about that. Is this something that will limit me? Posted: 10 May 2021 04:33 PM PDT Hey everyone, just wanted to say I'm out of big 4 audit and it feels so good!!! Thank you all for the words of advice! Exit opp: 55% raise + decent bonus ($5-$10k) from staff 2 to Senior in an advisory role in a HCOL area. Edit: made exit opp more clear [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 May 2021 11:38 AM PDT Some advice please. I am thinking of quittinf after tax season. The director made some pretty rude comments about me to a coworker. She insulted my upbringing and family. I don't want to work here anymore. I want to quit right after the 17th but the managing partner is on vacation from the 17 to the 31. I have an interview tomorrow if all goes well I get the job what should I do. I know its standard to give a 2 week notice. But what happebs when he is on vacation . There is another director who will be here. I am not sure what to do. Someone with wisdom. Please guide me in the right direction . [link] [comments]
What are employers looking for when they're asking for "Strong GAAP"? Posted: 10 May 2021 07:10 PM PDT I know what GAAP is when it comes to a textbook definition of it, but what does it mean when an employer requires you to have strong GAAP? How do you apply it to everyday work? [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 May 2021 08:56 PM PDT What are some accounting jobs where I can work ALONE or autonomously? I DON'T want to: - "build relationships" with clients - hound people for documents every day - have mindless small talk with coworkers daily - attend team functions/after work activities What are some job titles that truly work alone. I want to clock in, do my job, then leave without the extra social interaction. [link] [comments]
Did anyone regret leaving tax? Is it easy to bounce back to public once you go? Posted: 10 May 2021 06:16 PM PDT I quit my tax job after 3 busy seasons. I probably should have thought more about quitting but my firm pissed me off one too many times so I put my two weeks in and found a new job in industry. Now I'm having 2nd thoughts because I really liked the work that I did and getting to know the clients but felt super underappreciated. I know this has probably been asked before but I wanted fresh perspectives. [link] [comments]
any other new grads getting fukked over by the job market? Posted: 10 May 2021 07:12 PM PDT Job hunting in a nutshell: -requires 3-5+ years of experience for an entry-level job -prepare financial statements, manage payroll, taxes for a large company from beginning to end for $12/hr -applies to a job paying just a dollar above minimum wage. [no response] brb bathroom janitor job paying the same as entry-level accounting jobs [link] [comments]
Is it normal for people to dial into meetings while they’re on PTO? Posted: 10 May 2021 09:55 AM PDT I'm a recent college grad so my only professional work experience is with this firm so I have nothing to compare it to. But I've noticed how common it is for people to dial into meetings even when they're on scheduled PTO. Is that normal at other work places? I have scheduled PTO coming up and was talking to my manager about some work stuff and he mentioned some upcoming meetings scheduled for the week I'm out of the office. He said "you don't have to attend if it interferes with your time off". Like obviously it interferes with my time off because I'm literally scheduled to be out of the office that whole week. Anyways just wanted to get some thoughts from other people to see if this is normal across all accounting positions or maybe it's just my company's culture. Like I said I'm new to the professional workplace and this just kind of seems like a red flag. Edit: Adding more info. This is a corporate accounting role. Not public accounting. Love audit work, hate public lifestyle. Is there anything out there for me? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:06 PM PDT I'm an audit senior at a mid size regional firm. I really enjoy auditing, feel like it's what I'm meant for, it kinda comes natural to me. I like getting to work with lots of different industries and types of assurance engagements. Financial reporting, cost reports, 5500 audits, love it all. I hate having 4 different bosses telling me what to do and no competent staff to help and getting yelled at when I'm not delegating, hate year long busy seasons, and all of that. Am I SOL? I either get an internal audit gig and only have one client or I just go to another firm that hopefully is better? Thanks for any advice/ words of wisdom [link] [comments]
Bout that time to bounce (Rant) Posted: 10 May 2021 08:02 AM PDT Well. Writing is on the wall that I need to leave my current job. I'm an auditor in public getting a salary of $35,000 (no, that's not an error. $35k) in upper low - middle of cost living area. Graduated in pandemic with nothing lined up and was 'hired' beginning of December (hired on probationary period). Took the job because experience is better than no experience from what i've heard / read as I had no prior accounting experience or internship. I should've smelled fish when I asked another person on our team how often he got a raise and he said his last was 3 years ago... They also mentioned being on probation and didn't get a raise from the full time offer until going into the 3rd busy season. Now, of course I'm being berated of small petty things like 'why didn't I email a client about a $60 variable in inventory, ' why didn't you print, write, and rescan these calculations on a 40+ page PDF on every page (mind you, I did SALY and the 2 years before and referenced a separate spreadsheet on the PDF), and other things of that nature. Nothing has ever been explained as to 'why' we are doing this, only 'because we did it last year (not that their obliged to tell me, I would just like to understand better but of course when I ask they say its not for me to know :/ ).' I was put on an entire audit and working by myself for on the audit only 3 weeks in with no one checking up on my work. Looking back, I should've knew something was up when i only got a 0.75 increase from my previous warehouse job. At least I could forget about work when the shift was over. oh well. I'm leaving sooner rather than later. [link] [comments]
Office temperature and concentration? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:24 PM PDT Does anyone else have a hard time concentrating in a hot office environment? I feel like my office is way too hot and that it's messing with my performance. [link] [comments]
What macros should I put on my mouse? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:19 PM PDT I just got a new mouse (Logitech G502) which has a few extra buttons and another button that can, when held, change the actions of the other buttons almost doubling the available actions available. For example, the scroll wheel up can scroll up on a document as it's Action A and change worksheet as its Action B. I have a couple of ideas of what kinds of other quick actions or keyboard short cuts I would like to do, but I was wondering others might be useful. I found this document pretty helpful so far. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
