    Scam artist foiled.

    Posted:

Had a call today from a guy in Fort Simpson. Now FS is in the Northwest Territory. Gardening is possible but even in a good year is thin.

This guy is a business plan maker. He's making a plan for a developer who wants to start a raspberry farm in Fort Simpson.

I tell him it's not going to work. He has a short season, no labour force. It's an 18 hour drive from Edmonton, over mostly gravel road.

He admits that his client is doing so to get a stream of government grants.

"You mean you want my aid to run a fraud scheme against the territorial government? You want me to help your client cheat a government that has a hard enough time creating employment, for a project you know won't work, and he knows wont work. I won't be part of this. Take your plan, fold it up until it's all corners, and you can chose which dark location to put it. Go away and do not call be back."

He tried twice. I hit the OFF button each time.

Trying something new! Need some advices

    Posted:

Hi there! I want to start an online shop for selling Rolling Papers. I know a lot of you will say that this is not the best product, but in my city (and county) there are only one type of rolling papers for sale (OCB X-PERT slim fit) and only at Alcohol Markets (which are not so many). In the beginning I want to sell RAW Rolling Papers products, and then if everything goes as planned, I would like to start selling grinders, bongs etc. Even if I don't find disadvantages, I'm a little skeptical of buying such a large number of boxes, because I'm afraid they won't sell as I want. I would like to hear your opinions, maybe you can give me some tips!

How do I Markup my food premix to someone who wants to rebrand it as their own (B2B)

    Posted:

I'm guessing the most of yall are from America, so I'm just going to state everything in Percentage terms.

I'm on the verge of starting a Pancake premix business, as of yet, I've just sold samples to friends and the feedback was quite positive. I wasn't really planning on starting this full-on, until after my exams were over in May. I've been trying out different varieties and variations of my mix for weeks to come with a perfect easy to make the mix.

I've bought a few sample packing pouches and sticker labels so I can start on this, as soon as my exams were over. (I was planning on selling online, and through a few small stores my friends and family have, and gyms) To be frank I was just trying to target to sell at least 100-150 this year

LITERALLY , just a few hours ago my friend who owns a popular brand in ,a prominent food industry of my country, called me up and told me he wanted to have my mix in his store(Its a sorta fancy place), but rebranded as his own. and he wanted about 25-30 packs. He lowered the value from how overwhelmed I was ,He said he'd order more overtime tho, if this does well

I didn't really mind it being under his brand or anything, but this took me by surprise,30 packs is roughly 12 kilograms(24 pounds) of Premix, It might not be a lot to bigger businesses but this is HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE for me, and frankly I'm glad he lowered the value.

He asked me how much would I sell my mix to him for. He said he would provide me the packaging and the labels and all I needed to do was to fill the premix and give it to him.

The price I was looking to charge my premix to the market is half and a third of what competitors charge(Which is only just 2 other brands, which are just imports) I charge 300 while they charge 600 and 980

Ill be making roughly 140-250% markup on my goods at the price ill sell retail on my own

How much should I charge him, He wanted me to charge by the kilo ,which is reasonable considering e size he wantst

Whats the usual markup on premixes as a manufacturer?

Just another thing to note is that the food laws arent too strict compared to America or any other western state, Everything I'm doing is legal from making the mix at home to selling it through family and friends stores

    Wholesale Pricing

    Posted:

I have a side gig small business that I would like to make full time at some point. My most popular product is a natural air freshener spray that I make myself from plants and things. I sell all i can make through a farmers market and a handful of shops. Right now i charge shops 50% of retail as a wholesale rate. I regularly get requests for wholesale from other businesses, but because I can't produce enough to meet the demand (until I quit my day job and have more time to work on production or scaling) I'm turning them down. Should I be charging more than 50% of retail? I had someone request to buy the product wholesale to include in gift packs they sell online. It's a good branding match, but I hate to sell more at 50% rather than sell at retail at the farmers market. If it matters I hope to scale up production and be mostly wholesale long term. Any suggestions on how to deal with this are appreciated. I need to get some stuff in order a bit before I can quit the day job. Hoping to do that before next year. Thanks.

Pricing services that are available 24/7

    Posted:

We are having an internal debates on how to price services that are offered 24/7. We are an IT consulting shop and have number of customers that we support on 24/7 (not standard help desk). What are some pricing models that companies use to price a 24/7 service ? We currently charge a flat fee in different tiers that is based on amount of resources a given cloud application consumes, but I'm just curious what are other models that people devise ? I guess another one would be on internal cost basis, but we are differentiating ourselves that the first call/email/message made is going to be to a person that actually is knowledgable about given environment and experienced to help.

How to let a customer know you've undercharged them and pricing will be different moving forward?

    Posted:

    A little back story:

I own a startup video production and marketing company that's gathered quite a few leads and started working with a few great clients within the first month of promotion.

I have years of experience Conceptualizing, creating, filming, editing and producing TV ads, social media ads, as well as starting and managing campaigns.

I got a job from a client for a video promotion. After a quick phone call I was able to shoot over a quote for him, not realizing I haven't really understood or acknowledged the scope of the entire job itself. I now know I have severely undercharged him, I am still going to deliver my A+ work as usual, as connections and referrals / repeat business is the goal.

However, how can I tactically let him know that

    1) I've underestimated the work itself and misquoted for the first job

    2) Will need to be more realistic in Pricing (The project would have been twice as much as he paid, still far below competition) moving forward.

I don't want to come off as someone who is inexperienced in quoting, however it does come with experience. I don't want to let him know he's one of my first "Official" clients under the Business, so I am not sure how I should approach it.

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING, I am not going to even think about nor want any additional money for the first job, as it was my fault for quoting incorrectly. We have a good report, and wants to continue doing business. I don't want to seem like im up-charging just because.

Please help me with any input, I appreciate it!

Want to sell but need to relocate should I just close shop?

    Posted:

I own a pizza franchise, we do about 11-12k a week in sales.

Me and my brother each make 1000 a week before taxes, work full time or more and after payroll we essentially profit about 1000 a month.

Things are tight, but we need to leave our current location and move to another which is 800 dollars cheaper a month.

My issue is I want to sell, I want to move out of state and begin anew. I had the business for sale no biters. Corporate sent me the buildout plans for the new location and it's looking like 80-100k.

I just don't see it being worth it spending that much. I am just thinking of closing up and leaving.

I only paid 50k for the franchise, I'm debt free completely. My brother hasn't decided but he doesn't want to run it alone because the amount of work.

Is this just an awful idea? At what point do you just follow your per suit of happiness

Estimating taxes, overhead, liability for a basically non-existent landscaping biz

    Posted:

I decided a bit late that I was going to work for myself doing landscaping this year. At first I thought perhaps off the books would make sense for my situation as I can't really predict how this year will go, and others in the biz here have said its not really worth it to go otb until you're pulling in +100k/yr. I have at least 1 pt employee interested for off books pay. I'm trying to calculate my expenses and overhead, and trying to decide whether sole prop or LLC has any advantages for my situation where I feel like I have a niche market ready to access (ecological design) but am so, so new to the small biz world. I should also get some liability insurance, so I really should be on the books, but how can I pay estimated taxes at this point?

Does anyone charge people paying by credit card over the phone?

    Posted:

I am finding that doing a phone order takes a LOT more time than doing it by email. In addition it costs me 3% (Square) to take card not present credit cards.

I'm tempted to say, "No GST {canadian national sales tax} if you pay by cash, debit or e-transfer"

Anyone else finding that credit cards are a PITA?

[Question] How to file Taxes for single-member LLC that is part of a Multi-member LLC

    Posted:

    Hi there,

I am new to the small business world. If a single member LLC is part of a Multi-member LLC, does the single-member LLC file a Schedule C on income earned in addition to 1065 K-1 form provided from the Multi-member LLC? Or, does the owner of the single-member LLC only report the 1065 K-1 since it contains income earned for the LLC member? Or does the single-member LLC report income earned through schedule C from the information in 1065 K-1?

I am just trying to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. :)

    Starting a Dog Daycare

    Posted:

    Good day everyone,

I am looking to start a dog daycare and would appreciate any advice anybody has to give. All advice is welcome from an owner/employee perspective to a dog owner's perspective to whomever you may be that would like to aid me in my journey.

A little more about me, I have been walking dogs and house sitting in my city for a couple of years now and have built a decent base of clients. My city is very expensive so the biggest start-up costs will be a down deposit on a lease (buying is not an option). I have sufficient savings to start the business and would be fine if it failed, but would also be open to a loan since interest rates are very low. Currently, I am doing research and putting together my business plan and have reached out to a few realtors. This is not an endeavor I take lightly and I want to make sure I am as prepared as I can be. I'm turning to the community here for tips, suggestions, how to manage dogs in large groups, marketing techniques, how to get customers, branding, potential additional revenue streams, really whatever you would like to contribute I am all ears and again I really appreciate it.

    Thank you!

Am I correctly understanding tax deductions for my future S Corp?

    Posted:

Assume my single person S corp brings in 100k a year and salary myself at 70k which leaves 30k to be distributed to me and taxed as my income (minus social security tax). Now lets assume my CPA finds 30k of tax deductions for my business (home office, car depreciation, etc) so the net gain on the business portion is $0. Do I now get to keep the remaining 30k without having to pay any additional taxes on my personal taxes?
