Here is a Market Recap for today Wednesday, April 28, 2021

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 01:38 PM PDT

    PsychoMarket Recap - Wednesday, April 28, 2021

The stock market fell on Wednesday, with all three major indexes closing modestly red as market participants continue to digest the corporate earnings season and new commentary from the Federal Open Markets Committee.

The FOMC said the effective distribution of the vaccine in the US has improved economic conditions but reiterated interest rates will remain near-zero and the asset purchasing program in place. The Fed said, "Amid progress and strong policy support, indicators of economic activity and employment have risen." The committee remains optimistic about the rebound in economic activity, describing the most affected sectors as "having shown improvement", but shows no signs of slowing quantitative easing or raising interest rates. With more than 8 million people still out of jobs compared to pre-pandemic levels, FOMC reiterated its commitment to supporting the economy.

The Fed also said inflation has "risen" but attributed the higher readings to "transitory factors", meaning they expect any rise in inflationary pressures to be short-lived. Central bank officials warn that higher inflation reading could be coming as a result of measuring year-over-year changes from a highly unusual 2020. In other words, The Fed looks at changes in prices in a year-over-year format. Data for March and April of this year could therefore reflect large price "increases" because they are being compared against March and April in 2020 that saw massive price drops.

Economic data published since the Fed's last meeting in March 17 have largely supported their brighter outlook. Consumer spending surged 9.8% in March and initial jobless claims dropped to pandemic-era lows as more states continue reopening measures. In other news, according to a report by the Conference Board, consumer confidence has surged to a 14-month high in April as effective distribution of the vaccine and easing of social distancing guidelines in the US allows for the economy to gradually reopen. The Conference Board's monthly consumer confidence index jumped to a reading of 121.7 in April, or well above the 113.0 expected. Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, said in a statement, "Consumers' assessment of current conditions improved significantly in April, suggesting the economic recovery strengthened further in early Q2. Consumers' optimism about the short-term outlook held steady this month. Consumers were more upbeat about their income prospects, perhaps due to the improving job market and the recent round of stimulus checks."

    Highlights

    • The US trade deficit rose to a new record high in March, according to data from the Department of Commerce. The deficit increased by 4% to $90.6 billion, higher than the $88 expected by economists

I created an app to get free realtime market information and insights

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:18 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I've created a free app to make investment information more accessible and usable: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1522716306. Shout out to Fletch71011 for letting me post!

Lantern is an app that's powered by NASDAQ and official exchange data (fun fact: our data is as good if not better on the options side than Robinhood).

We offer stock prices, ETFs, greeks, options flow, news, and SEC filings. We released this last week so we're aggressively adding features and improving the in app experience.

Would love to know what you think!

Tax Hike on 1031 Exchange = Good News for Stocks

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:39 AM PDT

Hello stock family, the rest of this week should be volatile as we head into Powell and Biden speaking today. One of my concerns has been if Biden cuts the tax breaks on capital gains for millionaires, they will shift thier money to Real Estate leaving a bearish market trail in its wake.

However, Bloomberg has reported that Biden is also expected to announce a tax hike on capital gains for the 1031 exchange on real estate. This would negate some fears that the 1% percent would primarily move their money to real estate. This makes me a little more bullish on stocks. Interesting read regardless. See link below.

*Let's not get political, we can all agree everyone just wants to make money at the end of the day.

Pinterest beat expectations with 11 cents per share which 5 cents higher than estimates at 6. It grew user base 30% and is expecting a 105% growth in next quarter. I believe the selloff was done by a single large shareholder and may have triggered other smaller investors to follow like the sheep they are for whatever profit they could grab. I foresee a sharp rise back to $70 per share in the next few weeks.

What's the deal with BTX (Brooklyn Immunotherapeutic)?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:03 PM PDT

Anybody know what's going on with BTX, a biotech company with no positive news yet?

It has been pumping 50% every day for for about 2 weeks.

This company went public in 26-March with a reverse merger with NTN Buzztime (which is an entertainment company, with no relevance with biotech, not a SPAC either)

This company just started a phase 2 study.

According to their presentation, they value themselves at around 500M by comparing to other biotech. Their market cap is way above their projection now with the recent run up.

I skimmed through their 8K, prior share under NTN Buzztime was valued at $0.05, a transaction of $2M with merger.

Anybody with an idea how reverse merger works? How do BTX raise capital with through this reverse merger?

They may be offering stocks soon to raise capital, expect a quick dump?

    STPK / STEM thoughts?

    STPK / STEM thoughts?

Hi, just wanted to share my thoughts on the company Stem (ticker changing from STPK to STEM on April 29) as I believe it to be a very undervalued stock. Would love to hear both bullish and bearish thoughts on the stock. Below is just some basic info about the stock and some growth oppurtunities I see for it.

Star Peak Energy Transition Corp. just completed a merge with Stem and the ticker is changing from STPK to STEM tomorrow (April 29). The merge has not created a catalyst instead the stock has kept declining. (Personally I think it is from the whole death to the SPACS wave atm in the stock market.) The stock closed at 26.21 which I still believe is very undervalued for this stock. The company has no debt, has around ~525 million cash, and are expected to four fold their 2020 earnings. I believe this stock can grow significintly over the coming years.

    (Source: Stem inc. Investor Deck)

Above is a graph projecting earnings growth up until 2026. Even if this stock is bearish shorterm, I believe it to be a very good play longterm. With the growing green energy industry and the usability of the product in this vast market, I think the stock is a very good bullish play long term.

Brief description of product from stem:

"Stem delivers and operates smart battery storage solutions that maximize renewable energy generation and help build a cleaner, more resilient grid. Our customers include Fortune 500 companies, project developers, utilities and independent power producers. Stem's market-leading Athena software helps lower energy costs and solve renewable intermittency across the world's largest network of distributed energy storage systems" - Stem.

No other publicly traded companies offer this type of service. With the shift to green energy the market for this product should continue to expand vastly. Therefore I find this stock to be extremely bullish as they have a great balance sheet, are on track with their predicted future earnings, and develop a unique product that can serve an important role in a 1.2 trillion dollar market.

Stock: Innovative Industrial Properties - IIPR

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:00 PM PDT

Weed, now in the process of mass legalization, is projected to be a huge industry in the near future(next 5-10 yrs). But, anyone who's analyzed weed stocks will tell you that the product is a commodity, leading to low margins for most competitors.

But, for those who believe in bud and want to invest in the industry, Innovative Industrial Properties, or IIPR is a promising candidate. As you can see in the name, IIPR is a real estate company.

Their main operation is to buy real estate and lease it to weed farmers who either don't have the capital or don't want to because of the regulatory requirements. Basically, they participate in the growth of the weed industry without taking on the risks ("in a gold rush, sell shovels")

Revenues hit 116 million in 2020, at a 150% growth rate, even in the pandemic. They're projected to continue growing rapidly at around 75% CAGR. But they do have a market cap of 4.3 billion, so their selling at essentially 43x sales. But, this REIT is pure profit. With a gross margin of 100% and a net margin of 50%, IIPR earned 65 million in 2020 revenues, giving them a 56 PE ratio. Their forward PEG ratio is ~ 1. Given the relative certainty of their cash flows, high growth prospects, and profitability, IIPR seems undervalued or at least fairly valued, for such an exceptional business.

IIPR is a must-buy for anyone looking for a high growth, low-risk company that adds as a diversifier to their portfolio (through real estate)
