Neighbor shits in bags and leaves them outside

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT

My family and bought a house in the city a few blocks from our business about a year ago. We are in Pennsylvania. Everything seemed lovely until we realized the house next door is owned by a slum lord. The dude who lives on the first floor is awesome. The second floor is a mess.

The original second floor tenant was an older woman who seemed nice enough. She ended up passing away due to an overdose. The next person to move in is a train wreck. He's so wasted all the time that he continuously falls up and down the stairs, which is fine and doesn't bother me. Weirdly enough, the worst part about him is that there's always a waft of shit smell coming from his house and yard.

Yesterday he puts a white trash bag full of human shit out on his porch. You can clearly see the shit through the bag. Today it is SWARMING with flies and smells horrid. I have two small children and am worried about this being some kind of health hazard. We can't sit on our patio without smelling and seeing this dudes mess. I also loathe flies.

Is there anything I can do aside from setting up fly deterrents around my house and lighting candles?

**Update: Called the health department and they are sending a complaint letter to the owner of the house and will also be sending an inspector out in 30 days

***Update Update: wow this blew up and thanks for the award! My husband and I saw him outside and questioned him. After ADMITTING HE SHITS IN BAGS, he refused to clean it up or even tie the bags closed?! Not sure what my next move is, but I decided to invest in some good smelling candles, essential oils, and fly traps. Wish me luck

Workplace punished employee for having a reaction to the vaccine, seeking advice

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 04:56 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask about this, but I've been trying to help a friend find out information and if she can do anything about this.
Last week she got her second shot of the Moderna vaccine, and she had a reaction to it where she had to call out sick from her work. Her employer thus cut her hours this week from like 32 hours down to 15 hours, and today she told me that they put her on disciplinary action, gave her a write-up. If she gets a second write-up she could be fired.
So, isn't there some kind of law to protect people in this type of situation? I mean, she got the vaccine because its the right thing to do to continue the effort for public health, and through no fault of her own she had a reaction... and her job punishes her for it?
Is there anywhere she can report this or something? Better Business Bureau? Or a specific Covid-19/worker discrimination center if there is something like that?

    Thank you for any help!

Sister in law on life support and pregnant

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:44 AM PDT

    Location, Kentucky

SIL is on life support and not expected to survive, condition directly attributed to IV drug use. She is 23 weeks gestation. Her paramour is also a user and we believe he is the father of the child. Condition of the baby is unknown other than we know it is alive. SIL also has another living child who is placed with an aunt on her maternal side so we have no interactions with that child. All of this was in place before I joined the family. None of the family really knows what has transpired in the past few years and with the living child due to just no communication. The maternal side of the family enable SIL behaviors and paternal side doesn't.

So, we know that SIL has minimal chance of survival, and even if she did, it would be a very dependent life that would remain, likely in a nursing facility because she would require such care. SIL dad is her NOK and is making all the decisions for her health. My husband and I are helping with those decisions and we want to make sure we are doing everything to the best of our abilities.

We know there may be a possibility of keeping SIL on life support long enough to mature the baby to where it could potentially survive. We aren't sure about the legalities of that.

Also, my husband wants to raise the baby if it were to survive. We realize that it may be born with extensive medical issues. We also realize the other child has been placed elsewhere and didn't know if it would be a sort of default situation where the maternal aunt would just get custody of this one too. We are in a position to be able to care for this child and would like to do so.

We don't know what we should be doing right now to set things in motion. Her maternal family has been notified and has made no attempt to contact the hospital. The suspected father of the child is a known user, and is still using and may face charges over SIL.

We also don't know the ramifications if dad decides to not continue life support. Especially considering the baby.

Sorry it's a bit rambly but I'm trying to remember everything and include as much as I can. If there's any pertinent info missing I may be able to supply it if u want to ask.

Parents using. I’m trying to protect my little sisters but I have no idea where to start legal wise.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 02:16 AM PDT

This is a very heartbreaking post to make because I never thought I would be in this position.

At this point I want to do whatever I can to help my sisters, but not let them go into foster care. I'm 22 years old. And my two young teenage sisters have been staying with our biological mother who has been doing meth with my sisters biological father (my step dad). And has been trying to keep it a secret for months. It has gotten to the point to where yesterday I had to take my sisters from the house they were staying at and they are currently staying with me.

I have no idea what I can legal wise to get my sisters away from this situation but not enough to where they end up in foster care. I have two loving grandparents who would adopt them if needed but I don't even know where to start.

I feel weird coming to Reddit about this, but I'm honestly desperate. My main concern is protecting my sisters and I don't really care about our parents. But if anyone has any advice on what I could legal wise for my parents as well I'm totally all ears. I'm just incredibly lost, scared and have no idea where to even begin.

    Edit: I'm in Washington state.

Bought a car from work, it's still being tracked by GPS.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 04:57 AM PDT

    Illinois, United States

Bought an old work truck from my job. When in service they are GPS monitored, and are constantly tracked. Just found out my truck is still being tracked, after my boss accused me of not going to a doctors visit I took a day off for. I did, and have the note to prove it.

My boss called me a liar, and hung up. I cant leave the job till after December, but in the mean time I don't enjoy being tracked and monitored in my personal time. Is this illegal? What can I do?

If my flair isn't the most accurate I'm sorry. Let me know and I'll make any edits needed to make this post work.

Guy threatens to sue for travel costs and damages over coming to look at and NOT BUY a used car by a private seller

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 08:26 AM PDT

2000 Grand Cherokee with 180k miles. My Facebook marketplace posts says looks great for the miles. Be asks me if there's any problems, I tell him it has a couple small leaks and some quirks. I show up with the car at the train station and show him some damage that wasn't in the pictures, and talk to him about the car. He says he has an appointment to take it to pep boys to have them look it over, and I took the chance and allowed it with a picture of his license, but felt uncomfortable. Guy tells me worst case scenario, if they find something wrong i get a free check over. He messages me 2 hours later saying "pep boys says its not safe to drive because it's leaking a large amount of oil, this was falsely advertised, what are you going to do to make it right?" I say bring it back asap please. He says I'm not driving it, it's unsafe, and I'm mad that i decided to drive it to pep boys (claiming reckless endangerment) after driving in it with you for 10 minutes after you met me at the train station.SO... I drive to pep boys and ask for the keys and he says "so you're not going to do anything to make this right?!" and i say "yeah you don't have to buy the car, give me the keys" he says "wow seriously this is criminal im going to report you" and i say "to fucking who? Facebook marketplace? GO AHEAD. GIVE ME MY FUCKING KEYS NOW." Yeah so then he gave me the keys and I said peace and rolled out in the obvious death trap jeep that i sold the very next day with help from the vehicle check up he paid for. Then he sends me this message the next day.

Edit: Can't share pics of his messages here so this is my original post with his messages https://www.reddit.com/r/Flipping/comments/mzi801/guy_threatens_to_sue_for_travel_costs_after

Im assuming this guy has no leg to stand on, but my wife and I are traveling out of state for at least the next year starting next week. If this guy files a frivolous lawsuit, would I be expected to show up and defend this?

Hotel buyout during my destination wedding

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 07:08 AM PDT

Hi all, I have a destination wedding planned for later this year in Mexico. I signed a contract with an all inclusive resort last November. I was notified today that there was a "hotel buyout" and we would have to either change the date of our wedding (specifically listed in the contract) or change the location to another the resort offers. Do I have any recourse to fight back?

Company says discussing wages with other coworkers is grounds for termination

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 12:24 PM PDT

Word got out at work that they were hiring new employees at a higher wage than those (like myself) who have been there a year or longer. Of course we are pissed about this and talking about it with each other. Now, I was the first to learn about it from a recently hired coworker who actually isn't even there anymore. I didn't even ask, she just told me. So either way, I was not really discussing this with anyone besides my immediate boss because of course I thought he knew about this (he did not actually know our wages). Otherwise, everybody else knows from that girl who quit a few weeks ago. We had a meeting to discuss raises (what a coincidence), but our boss hinted that some people were spreading "false numbers" about it and that this was fireable offense. I am waiting on pictures of my old co-worker's check stub to have proof before I start any real trouble though. Also noteworthy is that this coworker was not hired because of more experience. I had to train her as someone being paid less which is very insulting.

I was pretty certain this is illegal, but I'm obviously not entirely sure. According to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), you cannot be prohibited from such discussions. Now I know you shouldn't be talking about it all the time or spreading a wild fire about it in the workplace, but it seems pretty clear that it is ok to do if you are genuinely concerned that you are being underpaid-which I definitely am.

I live in Wisconsin and employment here is "at will". Is this still protected by the NLRB if you know they are firing you because of discussing wages? I wasn't clear on an answer for that online. I feel like this is a way around it, because then you can't prove what they are firing you for?

Obama also signed an executive order in 2014 to protect this right, but I wasn't sure what the difference was from that and the NLRB protections already in place.

What permits do I need (if any) to put a functioning vending machine in a private residency?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:38 AM PDT

I am the alumni of a fraternity and can see many benefits to the fraternity house having a vending machine. I want to purchase a vending machine and stock it myself. The laws and permits seem to be a bit tricky. Do I have to have to register as a business or have a permit if it's just going to be in the frat house? Will there legally have to be paper work and documentation for any percentage deal I have with fraternity. Any thing else I need to consider before making the purchase Location: Houston, Tx

My Sister is threatening to sue my Mother and me after my Father's death.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:08 AM PDT

To give some quick context before I go into everything, my Dad passed away six months ago in a motor vehicle accident, he had no will. My Mother is 59 and I'm 24, my sister is 29. Nothing(even including memorial service or spreading of ashes) has been done in the six months because she believes that she is the first of kin, over my mother. We live in California(Sacramento area).

When my dad passed away and my mother and I told my sister, she went through the emotions of losing a parent for the first time then immediately went to calling friends/family and told them to contact her instead of my mother because it would be "too hard on her". At first, my mother and my sister were working together with an attorney and lawyer, things were going as smoothly as possible until assets or property got brought up. Things took a drastic turn after that.

We've been trying to sell his majority share of his Civil Engineering business and to figure out what to do with the 80 acres of property he owned as well, which she is against. We've been trying to go through his possessions and filter everything out, but we haven't been able to do anything because she wants to keep everything, even down to crusty old underwear with holes in it. She does have a very hard time letting go of objects, so you can imagine how it is with a family member.

I was going to post this yesterday, but more happened last night and today. My mother just told me that she noticed $200,000 go out of her bank account, and how it came back the same day. She just told me how my sister has been saying she is my mom to put her as administrator overall paid plans(phone, tv, insurance, everything). She's already taken about 65 guns, and about 1/4th of them are unregistered. The safe my father is in(including his guns and other bottom shelf liquor, which was originally top shelf but my sister replaced) used to have a lot of cash in it and my sister was the first to go through it, now it's just a temporary memorial because we haven't been able to spread his ashes or hold any memorial services for six months.

We moved over $500,000 into a private account that only my mother has access to because my sister does have access to the checking account(originally was to help my mom, but she used it for her credit score and to take money). We changed all of my mother's passwords for everything, whenever an attorney would email my mother my sister would always call ASAP as if she is getting notifications on her phone. She texted my mother to where she said she does not wish to be a part of the family and is removing herself from everything she is on(phone, tv, insurance, everything) and we're waiting for that email to come in from her attorney.

Her friends have been giving her advice on how to deal with us, and how they have sued their parents in the past and are trying to help her. I've never seen my mother like this, it's worse than her getting the news that my father passed away. Right now we don't know what to do, to either go over and embrace her, or to just let her have the usual temper tantrum she normally has. We're fearing that she is a danger to herself and she might do something incredibly stupid, but again we're afraid of what she will also do to us.

At this point, we have no clue what to do. My mother is not reaching out to anyone(including her 6 brothers and sister) because she believes it will turn into gossip when in reality it's my sister who turns it into gossip among the extended family. I don't know what to do, I'm at a loss for everything and I'm scared if she comes over to the house(which she has a key for) before we get a security system installed and locks changed. I'm afraid for my mother, myself, and even my sister. Please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My stimulus check from last year just turned up from an IRS trace, apparently stolen and cashed by someone else. I just called the IRS identity theft line to report it and was booted off because apparently my real, full name doesn't match what they have on file. Where to go from here?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 09:02 AM PDT

(I'm originally from New York, but currently live out of the country)

    Hi everybody,

This feels quite surreal. Like I wrote, my stimulus check was stolen. After like 8 months of calling the IRS repeatedly they told me that it just wasn't sent or something and that I could claim it on this year's taxes. Didn't think much of it. Today I just got a letter saying that they found my check and they sent a copy and it was cashed out by someone in another state than where it was supposed to be sent.

The thing is that I live out of the country now. The check was using my 2018 tax info and was sent to my old address. In the past I've tried to file for the free credit/identity theft check websites and unfortunately they don't let me fill anything out because they require US addresses. As someone who files taxes abroad, they won't accept the address that the IRS has on file for me (my current one). Tried entering in my old ones as well and no dice.

So, today I call the IRS Identity Theft line and tell the person my situation. They take my notice number and ask me my social. I give it, they ask for my full name and then they ask if there's anyone else who has access to my account. I tell them my spouse's name and they pause, then tell me that doesn't match their info on file and hang up. I called my dad and asked if he would have access to my social, but he says he wouldn't know.

I have no idea what to do. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't know where someone would have stolen my info or if that's what my situation even means.

Dad inherited home in another state, a cousin moved in without notifying him, I want to get rid of the home.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 11:18 AM PDT

My grandpa passed away around 3 years ago and my dad inherited a home in Kentucky and close to 16k that my dad kept in my grandpa's bank, where he assumed ownership of the account. One of my cousins had a baby quite young and needed a place to stay, my dad was kind enough to let her stay in the house on the condition she pay power and report any damage to the property, keep it neat, etc.

Last year I wanted to get a good idea on where my dad's savings was because there is a good chance that he is going to have a very difficult road ahead medical wise (COPD) and will end up on hospice, I want to make sure I can do whatever I can to protect his assets and ensure he gets quality care. He gave me access to his accounts and to my absolute horror, the account was -10k.

The cousin he had let stay in the home had not been paying the power bill despite him sending her a bill and her acknowledging it each month and it was auto deducting from that account. That accounted for around 4k of the expenses over two years. Evidently, he had given his credit card number to family for a gift purchase for one of the kids and they had been charging his account up for various purchases on Amazon, gift cards, rent, utilities.

I shut that account down, transferred what was remaining over to a credit union in our state and told my dad it was time for our cousin to get out of the house until we can figure out what was going on. She moved out around January/Feb of last year.

At this point, I realized my dad was completely checked out of his finances and this house so I started watching over his accounts a bit more closely but he kept assuring me he was "on top of it now" and wouldn't let anything like that happen again. I set up automatic bill pay for everything, and specifically mentioned that he would need to pay his property taxes if he had not already.

Now onto this month. I had asked him monthly about who was checking on the house for damages and he assured me it was another cousin. I mentioned now would probably be a good time to assess the property and sell the home since nobody was living in it. I contacted a realtor local to the area to assess the property value and any repairs/updates/etc that needed to be made to determine our next steps and she said the key we mailed her did not work. After some phone calls and pulling proverbial teeth to get my cousin to admit it, turns out that cousin that had been "checking for damages" actually moved in, had changed the locks has been living there since last year. The realtor was unable to access the house but from the outside she gave me a quote for repairs that far exceeds any access to credit or savings my dad has available. She also said that by looking in the windows, the house appeared to be in utter disrepair and would require a lot of work to bring up to code. (She noted the mess alone was alarming and verging on a hoard)

I asked my dad for all of the financial information regarding the property taxes, he never paid them.

Based on what the realtor told me, it's a liability to have this home that we can't monitor or care for and now that someone's living in it, I'm afraid my dad could be held liable if something happens. Based on the ballpark quote I received from the realtor without even assessing the inside in addition to the property taxes, I think this home is a wash for any kind of salvageable profit and just isn't worth the time, effort and money.

I am lost on how to move forward from here. My only priority is to stop the bleeding from my dad's accounts and getting rid of this house as soon as possible. He can't afford to salvage it or repair it, and I don't think he should pay the property taxes at this point as it would take a significant part of his savings. Is there a way we can just surrender this property to the city and write it off? I am assuming my cousin has some sort of tenants' rights since she has been staying in the home for over a year now, and we're still in a pandemic. Are we even allowed to surrender it? What kind of lawyer do I need? Are there any other options? I have never owned any property and I'm not sure how to get rid of this cursed home.

Builder next door messed up chimney

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 08:45 AM PDT

Do I have any recourse here? Moved into my house 3/2020, construction was done next door 3/2019. I live in a rowhome so they put a chimney extender/cap on our chimney so that it would be above the level. The previous owner okayed this. Since we moved in, there has been leaking back through the chimney. 2 quotes we have gotten both said the extender was poorly installed. I contacted the contractor for the new construction about fixing it and he told me to get lost. Do I stand a chance in small claims court? (Philadelphia, PA)

No one to came to fix AC for a month now.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:52 PM PDT

Hey all just looking for some help here. I'm from the US, Iowa if that is specific enough. Now about a month ago I filled out a maintenance request form to get my AC fixed. A week later and I'd heard from no one so I give them a call to ask when they will be out. They say that their contractor isnt going to do them until its hotter out and that I must wait. It was 83° in my apartment that day which I feel is hot enough, and it has been that hot multiple days since. They told me I'd have to open my windows to cool them down, which they were already open, and that there was nothing else they could do about it. Well now it's the end of the month, they're expecting rent soon and i feel like I'm being cheated here, they're expecting full rent for an apartment that was regularly 80°F. Is there anything I can do in this situation?

Dentist retiring after I paid for my entire surgery upfront.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Basically I made plans to get oral surgery. During the first part of the surgery, I paid for the entire thing upfront. I've had a few subsequent surgeries since then, and was about to have the final one. However, my dentist retired unexpectedly, meaning that they had to switch me to another connected provider.

Now they are talking about paying for the surgery again. This is just the receptionist, so she might be wrong, but in case she's not and I do have to pay again, what can I do here? It already cost a lost, so I'm not sure if I can pay for it all again.

    Location is in Indiana.

Is it possible for an 18 year old to get an abortion in Texas without her parents knowing?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Would this be possible bar finances? I understand that costs fluctuate based on how long the person has been pregnant and the treatment that would be used. Would there be any legal proceedings that would have to be done with the parents/legal guardians of the person? Is proof of health insurance mandatory? What would be necessary in order for it to be done without parents knowing?

Home Builder increased the cost of my home after the contract was signed

    Posted: 26 Apr 2021 09:41 PM PDT

Reddit I really could use your help here please.

So I signed and executed a contract (It's a new home construction TREC contract, not a builder specific contract) in Dallas, Texas with a builder to build a home for a base price of $470k + Upgrades (this is exactly how it's written in the contract regarding the sales price). The builder has now sent out a note saying he can't honor that price because of "Material and Labor" increases and that the new base price is $520k + upgrades. I read the contract in its entirety and no where does it explicitly say that the base price can be modified by the builder. The only language around cost adjustments has to do with "buyer change orders" or spending more or less than the allowances specified in the base price. Can the builder just modify the base price after a contract has been signed by both parties? He's offered to return my earnest money and give me $500 for the inconvenience if I want out of my contract but all I ultimately want is the home I signed for at the price we agreed upon (some are recommending I go down the litigation route).

I'm torn because I don't think the builder is lying that costs are increasing (I'm well aware of the price of lumber), but I've turned down other homes because I signed this contract in good faith and I can't afford $50k more on my base home price (if it was $5 or $10k more I would be more understanding and willing to give a little here).

Any thoughts or advice are more than welcome and thanks in advance!

    Workplace False Imprisonment?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I (student) work hourly part-time at a department store. After my coworkers and I clock out, we are locked inside the building against our will. Management refuses to unlock the door until they are finished with whatever they're doing. There is a camera + mic by the door which is used to communicate with us. The lock is operated remotely, so it's just us trapped in what's essentially a large storage closet. I have seen my coworkers plead with management to be let out only to be refused. Sometimes we are held for 20+ minutes. Is this considered false imprisonment? Surely this isn't legal, right?

Edit: I live in the USA.

Edit: There are no emergency exits for us to leave through. The controlled access door is the only way for us to leave the building.

    Landlord possibly collecting double rent?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 12:36 PM PDT

This might be a reach but bear with me

I live in Alaska and my state recently started a program where if you make under 76,000k a year you are qualified for the state to pay for rent and utilities, it's called the Alaska Housing Relief Fund. I qualify for this program as I support myself on $14,000 a year. I recently got approved for this program as well back in February.

I talked to my landlord about it and she told me that she disproves of the program because she does not like that her tax payer dollars pay for other peoples rent. I did not like that she expressed she didn't like it, it seemed off to me.

Paying rent through her is cash or money order ONLY, and i don't get a receipt. Kinda suspicious but whatever, it's a nice apartment in ALASKA for $795, usually rent here is 1,200 or more for a similar apartment.

She claims that she hasn't heard from the Alaska Housing Corporation even though my rent is prepaid for 3 months, i got hit with a late fee last month which sucks. I'm about to pay May's rent too, and she still claims that she hasn't heard from the state about the program, and since i lay her in cash I have a small suspicion that she is pocketing the money and collecting double rent.

I emailed the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation about it and I haven't heard a response, the 1st is coming up soon and i want to save my money if i can. What should i do?

sorry for bad grammar i typed this on my phone and it's laggy.

    School Won’t Pay Medical Bill

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 12:29 PM PDT

I went to Lincoln Technology in Nashville, Tennessee in 2019. At some point in time, the school's janitor mixed two separate cleaning chemicals (I believe ammonia and bleach) to clean the hallway floor. My class was the only one that was on the hall that day. I was sent to the hospital for "observation" after puking once and one of the many medics reading high blood pressure, along with maybe 5 or 6 others. I was lucky and had the milder affects.

I still had insurance that was out of state (Virginia), but did not have my wallet as the teacher and I rushed to get everybody out and jam the doors open to vent the building out as soon as possible after finding the janitor in horrible condition from being at, let's say ground zero. Therefore, I didn't have my insurance information and temporarily filed as uninsured at the hospital. My school gave me some sort of card and paperwork afterward. I filled it out, and went on about my business. Well, they still won't pay. In fact, last year their insurance told me to file with my insurance and they will pay the difference. I didn't have that insurance anymore and I had to fill out yet another form and send it out. They said that form will "take care of it." It's now almost May of 2021 and now the bill is hurting my credit and I am deemed derogatory on payments for a bill that I'm not supposed to be paying. What do I do? Do I take the school to court? I'm only 20 and I've never dealt with something like this before.

What happens to the ring post engagement if you live in 2 different states?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2021 06:53 AM PDT

I (29F) broke things of with my fiancé (36M) after he tried strangling my dog and then turned his rage to me when I got her away from him. He had me against the wall by my throat and has left bruises on my body from his hands. He was dragging me from my phone when I was trying to call the police.

We are safe now. My dog and I are staying with my parents. I blocked him and do not want to see him at all. I live in Texas and he lives in Oklahoma. The law differs on who keeps the ring between the states. Any help and advice very appreciated.

Update: I contacted my local police. They only care about my safety. They are having me come in to file a report after he is gone to start a history and told me to call 911 if he shows up. I reached out to the ring company. They asked me to bring the ring and paperwork in next week and are working on doing a return and they will contact him to come in and sign paperwork.
