    Using Instagram/YouTube/Facebook to begin...

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:01 AM PST

Does anybody else notice that when these things start, like when people first started using YouTube or Instagram for their business when Instagram and YouTube were new (or even just before they were bought ), that it was easier to actually gain a community and build a following and now it seems that they change these sites with algorithms to make it streamlined, but in the process made it so much harder for new-starts to gain any traction?

Like it's almost like you have to start a new social media if you want to build a community because the current social media algorithms will cancel you for using similar hashtags?

I wonder if it's just me that notice this? Or if make it's a thing to control the way people were getting Rich off YouTube and Instagram?

Or if it's a way to try streamline it for the user?

The 20 Second Rule is helping me COMPLETELY change how I approach my Habits

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:12 AM PST

We often think that following through on good habits or breaking bad habits is dependent on how strong our willpower is. This is actually false! The key is ELIMINATING the number of steps between you and a good habit, and INCREASING the number of steps between you and a bad habit. This is called the 20 Second Rule.

In 20 seconds, we usually end up deciding whether we will continue with a habit or not. That's why we want to keep resistance to a minimum for any habits we're trying to stick to.

    A few examples:

    • Keep a book in your bag at all times if you want to read more
    • Keep your workout clothes in sight so you don't have to pick out clothes before going to the gym
    • Remove junk food from your fridge if you're trying to eat healthier

A quote from Shawn Achor - "If you want to change a habit in the long-term, in the beginning, you have to rely on willpower. But willpower is a finite resource and can't be relied on."

I explain the 20 Second Rule in depth and talk about plenty more examples here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjsywuURRDA

Hopefully this might help shift the way that you think about habits and change your approach to them altogether.

Lessons learned bootstrapping an app with no login

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 10:18 AM PST

    Prologue

While studying Computer Science Engineering at University I started to understand the implications and dangers of underestimating your digital security.
We usually don't care about it because we don't feel threatened, but in reality it should concern you as much as keeping your front door locked at night.

Your data is as valuable as your physical belonging, if not more.

Did you know "123456" and "password" are among the most common used passwords?
Try them to sneak into your ex boyfriend's Instagram account, maybe you'll get lucky.

One day I took courage and spent 1 hour to review all my digital assets (email accounts, facebook, logins etc).
I got rid of all my nameSurnameYearOfBirth passwords, installed a password manager and enabled 2 Factor Authentication (2FA) whenever available.

I recommend to always enable 2FA because it provides an added layer of security by requesting a temporary code in addition to your username/password.
Such code will be sent you using a separate channel (e.g. Authenticator app, text or email) making it much harder for an attacker to break into your account even if your password was compromised (say you were the ex boyfriend from above).

    The idea

After a few weeks I was pretty satisfied with my new setup: Dashlane + Google Authenticator, but I soon realised that not having the OTPs available on the Mac was a huge limitation.

You may be wondering why not using a single app for both passwords and OTP, the answer is simple: would you keep your credit card and pin in the same wallet?

At the time there was no well known / trusted OTP Authenticator app sharing data across devices without relying on a third party server.
Therefore, I decided to build one myself and named the project after Obsidian.

Long story short, the app worked perfectly using the iCloud Keychain capabilities to let users share OTPs across iPhone and Mac without involving any server in between.

As an entrepreneur I had reduced my risk by: * Leaving the security of the infrastructure to Apple * Preventing remote access to my users' data by design

As a user I had a secure and reliable way to manage my OTPs across my devices.

Moreover, the app only needed an active Apple device to function, a login option would have served only to harvest users email, so I dropped the idea of implementing one.

Obsidian went live and I received a lot of positive feedbacks especially for the sharing capabilities and the fact it did not involved any server.

    The pitfall

Fast forward to the end of 2020, I started feeling the app was becoming "old" and needed an overhauling, so I decided it was time for a change.
Over the years I had learned React/React-Native, so I got the insane idea of rewriting Obsidian from scratch using the new competences I had acquired.

I threw myself in the development and in few months I had a working version for both iOS and MacOS. I was pretty satified with the result and in January 2021 I officially released v6.0.
I was thrilled and couldn't wait for my users to update it and tell me how much of an improvement it was with respect to the old Obsidian.

It turned out it was not. Well, partially.

In my vision the MacOS app needed to move back to the dock (it was a menu-bar app) in order to become a sort of cockpit for your 2FA.
I imagined it wrong and within the first 2 days I received almost a hundred emails from customers asking why the menu-bar solution had been removed.
It happened to be the killer feature that skyrocketed their productivity.

I realised in that moment that I had completely neglected to ask my customers what they liked or disliked about the app and ended up making a decision that was in disagreement with what they wanted.
In my defense: how could I have done it?
Due to the way Obsidian was build, to preserve users' privacy and data, I had little knowledge of who my customers were, let alone how to contact them.

Anyway, I acknoledged my error and worked hard day and night to release v6.1 with the menu-bar functionality back; believe me, doing that with a React Native app ported to MacOS with Catalyst was not a walk in the park.

Despite this minor stumble, I received a lot of nice feedbacks regarding the new update, especially for the brand new Clubhouse inspired theme (I'm joking, but the theme is available for real).

Looking back, I think that I could have come up with some way to ask my customers for a feedback prior to removing the menu-bar feature, for example:

    • use the 60-70 contacts that over the years asked me for support
    • send an updated v5.5 with an annoying popup asking to fill a Google form
    • start messaging people who follow @obsidianapp on twitter, asking for feedbacks

You probably may have even better solutions, feel free to reach out :)

    Conclusions

I don't regret how things have gone, I'm happy I didn't violated my customer's privacy and learned that there are ways to ask for feedbacks even though you haven't harvested your customers' email.

If you have used Obsidian you may have noticed the possibility to Sign-In with Apple, be aware it is not for marketing purposes.
This was a technical constraint because Apple requires developers to have separate IAP (In App Purchase) for iOS and MacOS, so the reconciliation must be done on your side to transfer the purchase across Operating Systems.

Apple Sign-In was the obvious choice to preserve the users' privacy: the only information I store are a random generated user id, the Apple's private email relay address (e.g. dfkmbs4u3r@privaterelay.appleid.com) and the subscription expiry date.

    Lessons Learned

Here are a few things I learned along the way:

    • Never assume you know what your customers think or why they use your app
    • Never assume you know what your customers want
    • Privacy must always be protected, if you don't need a login do not request it, but think about ways through which you can gather feedbacks from your users
    • Apple should definitely implement native global IAPs

    Thanks for reading,

Best way to prepare yourself for Entrepreneurship (Read my answer below)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:40 PM PST

The most important lesson in my Entrepreneurship journey so far is that its all about EXECUTION

Problem with most of us is that we wait for that PERFECT moment to implement.

We need to understand this that life rewards only to action takers.

Everyone starts with the ZERO level but keeps on learning and improving along the journey.

Experience is the biggest teacher. How one "REACTS" to a situation makes him/her experienced and not mere "GOING" through the situation.

How we actually THINK and approach a scenario creates the difference.

To end with my favourite quote: Always remember when giving excuses you are doing so for YOURSELF and not for anybody else!

So stop thinking too much and start ACTING!

    I started!

    What's stopping you?

Photography website: squarespace, format, or something else?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:59 AM PST

Looking to host my photography website. I'm a student and I know Square offers me 50% off for the first year, but Format looks better for the arts. I can potentially also make my own site, but I don't keep up with developments in coding best practises, so I think I am better off paying a bit more for something already made. I've also been told Krop is good, made for commercial photographers by commercial photographers.

If there's a better subreddit I should try let me know! Thanks!

Selling your gift cards in stores.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:49 AM PST

Anyone have products in stores and a bigger catalog on an e-commerce site sell gift cards to your site at those stores? How does it work? If it's a $25 or $50 gift card does the store purchase your card at distribution price like the rest of your goods and then collect the $25? How do they get a % of each card sold?

What's the right age to start a business?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PST

There's literally no minimum age to start a business.

Basic requirement is to SOLVE a particular problem through your product /service. 🌟

    That's it.

Foremost intention should be to GENUINELY HELP people and not just money! 💯

When you truly provide solutions to people money will come as a by product. 🎯

    I guarantee you that.

    Hope this helped. 🙏

How can I grow my business?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:47 PM PST

I am based in Northern Ireland and I have started up a facilities management business. The main goal of the business is to be a one call for all services company so we can handle full facilities. We have started the business offering contract cleaning, commercial kitchen deep cleaning, residential deep cleaning and window cleaning. Our branding is good, our social media is frequent and modern. The issue is I'm really struggling to get new customers or even enquiries from commercial clients. I have 3 regular contracts that's run the business and allow me to invest in new equipment and services, but there is only so long I can keep spending without seeing an increase in turnover. The plan is to get me in to the business full time so I can focus on getting the engineering and electricial side up and running. I have tried google ads, trade sites, Facebook ads and flyers.

Help to kick off social media for my brand

    Posted: 05 Mar 2021 05:54 PM PST

working on launching my athletic brand, I'm pending to receive the samples of my first products to begin production. I feel confident about my product and Shopify store coming in strong.

But my social networks is what really concerns me, I don't even know how or when to begin. I am thinking giving out clothes (and maybe affiliate code) to a few trainers in my gym who have 3K-12K followers in their accounts to raise awareness of the brand and also have some content, but to do that I should have something already on my page. I am also thinking doing a photo shot with my friends to have even more content to post at least 3-4 times a week, even though everywhere I read I should be posting at least daily.

Any recommendations or words of wisdom here? Would truly appreciate it.
