Is it possible? Can student loans affect your credit? I'm not talking about a brand new Tesla or Corvette, at least for me, but one on the cheaper side, say 25k or less? I'm not sure if I'm answering my own question here but I'm assuming one would have to calculate to see if they can be able to handle the payments on top of their SL payments?

I'm new to this forum and am grateful it exists, so I'll be asking questions on here every now and then. Sorry for any confusion.

240k in debt, 6.5 years into PSLF, and then...

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 05:23 AM PST

I got a second (dream) job in another industry. I'm managing both for the time being, but will likely have to quit one sometime in the next year (both are remote but normally located in HCOL cities).

The dream job currently makes a little less than the PSLF, but the potential is much higher if things go right (which is a big if). I've been on some form of IBR for the last decade and have not touched principal on my loans in 8 years. So options are:

    1) abandon dream job and tough out pslf job 2) abandon pslf job and repay loans

And as a corollary to that, I've been saving my money instead of making payments. Should I try to max out repayment now, or wait until I know what do?

    FAFSA help

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 12:43 AM PST

The California deadline is March 2nd and I submitted on March 1st. I need my GPA verified by March 2nd to receive Cal Grant, but I don't know whether my fafsa application is going to be processed in time. Am I screwed? I'm a first gen student and trying to navigate everything alone is causing me a lot of anxiety.

Grad School Loans and Living Expenses?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:24 PM PST

I really want to start grad school this year, but I haven't filled out a FAFSA yet. Is there any chance of still getting enough student loans to cover all the expenses (tuition and any other major school expenses)?

Also, I live in a HCOL area where my rent is $1700, I'm going through a divorce, and I have two kids. I'm also having challenges with my current job due to COVID and changes my company is making. As a last resort, do you think it would be possible for me to take out enough loans to cover at least some living expenses too? I don't want to unless I absolutely have to, but with all the financial scares I'm having at the moment, I would breathe easier if I knew that I may be eligible for extra loans to help for at least one semester.

UAS bill for nonexistent Perkins loan

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:21 PM PST

I recently received a bill from University Accounting Service (UAS) for a Perkins loan that I have no record of.

I have 2 active Perkins loans through my university, both of which show up in my FSA dashboard. This loan is not one of them, and UAS is not listed as a servicer for any of my loans, past or present.

I've repeatedly asked them for more information in writing, but they can't or won't provide any, not even the year that it was taken out. They just direct me to my UAS online account (which doesn't provide any information) and threaten me with default.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with this servicer. If they don't drop the issue, my plan is to consolidate my Perkins loans so that they'll be serviced by Great Lakes, which services my other loans. At least then they'll be eligible for the income-based repayment program that I'm already enrolled in. But I can't consolidate a loan that I can't even see in my FSA account!

    Marriage & Student Loans

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:43 PM PST

My girlfriend has an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan for her student loans and has been deferring payments as she is currently unemployed. We want to get married so that she can get onto my employment-based health and dental insurance (blue shield of CA), but we are not sure how that will affect her student loan situation.

We don't have any kids and we'll be living in California (her student loans were filed in Missouri).

    Questions:

    1. Will she have to start making payments if we get married?
    2. Is there another kind of repayment plan we could switch to that would be cheaper on a monthly basis?
    3. What happens to her student loans if we *don't* get married but she changes her state of residence from Missouri to California?

    "Deferment Request Approved"...I never requested?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:52 AM PST

    Hello,

I recently went back to school full-time asynchronously while teaching internationally. I have student loans from a former educational diploma but decided to pay both loan payments and tuition simultaneously. Recently, I received a message from Great Lakes indicating that my Deferment Request was approved. The thing is...I never applied.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Did my University somehow contact my student loan provider, indicating them to put a pause on my payments? Thank you for your help.

    Loans put in deferment

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 12:57 PM PST

I have federal student loans and have been on the PAYE plan for about 6 years. I started taking a few college classes this semester as part of the cross training I am doing at work. I just received an email from MyFedLoan telling me that they were notified that I'm back in school and so they put my loans in deferement. I did NOT want this at all; my job is helping pay for the classes I am taking now so I won't be using any loans. I'm going to call tomorrow but I read that if I do cancel the deferement the unpaid interest will capitalize. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is this going to make me start back from zero with none of the payments I've made counting towards forgiveness?
