Promoting from SDR -> AE during WFH vs in-office

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 09:22 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently working in finance (trading for a year, now central banking currently) and I want to transition into SaaS sales.

My question is how much more difficult will it be to promote from a SDR to AE role during WFH vs while in office?

Finance has instilled the ability to grind in me, so I'm not concerned over that aspect of being an SDR - I do want to limit my time in the role and move to AE as fast as possible though (~1yr). I tend to come off much better in person when networking in the workplace, and I'm less confident I could network/convince seniors for a promotion when not in person.

Is there any validity to this concern? Would appreciate any input.

Does your sales job allow you to travel (not for work) a lot?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 06:38 AM PST

Hello! I'm a structural engineer, and I love what I do but the hours are insane. 60 hours a week for a 60k salary is just not worth it. And most civil/structural engineers only get 2 weeks pto. it's also very hard to travel as my job is project based.

I'm thinking about the jump to sales as I have done some research and it looks like something that I would be very interested in. One thing that I have always wanted to do is travel multiple time a year. Like 3 one week long vacations and a few small ones spreaded out throughout the year. I know all sales jobs are different, but would your jobs allow this assuming that you will still hit your quota?

I just started a new job in software sales. Do you have any tips on how to overcome imposter syndrome?

How long after starting a new sales role can I leave?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:03 AM PST

I'm 26 and I have a few years of work experience but had nothing directly in sales. I was targeting entry level software sales roles because I want more earning potential, but the only role I got was a business development role that has no commission, just a bonus structure. It's still good training in prospecting, cold calling and handling objections. Also fully remote which is cool.

I would really like to land something with commission. But this is all I got. Now idk if it would look ridiculous to apply to work after being a month into the job?

    Should I be feeling guilty?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:15 AM PST

Hello all, i recent started an SDR job for a small firm and am the only SDR setting up demos. I've been either meeting or exceeding quota every month I've worked and have already exceeded quota for the month of March.

My question is, my day to day really only takes 4-6 hours and not a full 8 hours but I feel guilty if I don't work the full 8 hours which brings me to stretching out my day (taking more breaks, etc) - is it normal to not work a full 9-5 workday as an SDR? I'm remote and my boss is also remote so it's not like I'm in the office.

Do you use scripts? Why yes, why not?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2021 11:02 AM PST

Let me give you some context: I'm an experienced salesperson. Mostly full cycle sales experience in SaaS, pharmaceutical, startups, ect. Right now I'm working for a major iaas player in Europe and was hired as a cloud solutions accountmanager (70 hunter 30 farmer). its my second month. Thing are going great, still in training phase and going through all sales departments: internal sales (domain names and small webhosting), customer happiness and am about to start in channel (resellers and affiliate partnerships) when that's done ill go to server hosting (the big leagues). In channel ill be prospecting on larger agencies.

I really feel like using a script could help getting over that first call bump. We all know you don't get a second first impression. I'm not talking about reading from a script, that's a recipe for coming across as a salesperson. I'm talking about a guideline/template/resource for getting a next step/meeting.

I'm having trouble getting my value statement across and feel it would help

    Any thoughts?

My Driver Took a Leak on Camera

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 07:35 PM PST

I had a customer call me on Friday around 4:30, Let's call her Barbara. Barbara is a lovey Dominican woman in her 60's that owns a small/medium sized liquor store in pretty rough area. I'm in liquor/wine sales and having a trusting and personal relationship with customers is essential as many items are sold by multiple wholesalers and I see these people every week.

Barbara calls me and says "I just saw your driver take a piss behind my building! I have cameras all around my store and don't ever want to see that man again!" I ask what happened and apparently she wouldn't let him use the bathroom because of Covid-19 and he couldn't hold it. Now this I don't think was right, I used the bathroom 2 days prior with no issue but it's her store and if she says no you better listen.

I assured Barbara this would never happen again, apologized profusely and called my company to report the incident. They said there isn't much we can do about it, these are union drivers and it's going to take a lot more than that to get someone kicked off a route. The warehouse manager did call and apologized which I appreciate.

This entire issue I had no way of preventing, still it is the salesmens job to save the account, redevelop the trust of the customer and still try to get her to take in new items/focus brands each month. While at the same time personally believing she should have let him use the bathroom as the alternative was him apparently pissing himself. I guess the point of this post is to say that we as salespeople do a hell of a lot more than call customers and hit quotas.

What are some ways I can be creative in my outreach as a SDR? I am new to this so please forgive what might be a silly question.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 04:18 PM PST

My boss told me he wants me to be more creative in my outreach. What does he mean by that and what are some examples or ways of going about that?

Thank you to anyone with feedback on this!

Need help - Should I change jobs and sell a less complicated solution?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 06:45 PM PST

My wife and I are about to move across the country because she is about to start her residency. We are very excited where we are going and it is in a city we have always wanted to live in. She is starting her residency in June and we have plans to move within the next 2 months.

I am currently an Account Executive for an industry leader fintech company and sell a relatively complex solution with an ACV of 130k and an average sales cycle of 8 months. I have been working for this company for over 3 years. We recently acquired a new company and combined sales teams which in return completely changed our comp structure after the new year. The new comp plan is so bad that I have already made my decision that I am going to leave. It has made the entire sales team less motivated and we have also seen a lot of the C-Suite leave over the past 6-months. I'm sure I could tell my boss that I am moving and work remote (thanks Covid), but I am so checked out at the moment and desperately need a career change.

I recently received an offer in the city that we are moving to with a start-up company selling a far less complicated product but the pay is same. The company has been growing exponentially and has won all of the awards over the past few years ie. fastest growing companies, best places to work etc. I would be moving from a quarterly quota to a monthly quota which would I know would be a huge change and I am okay with it. ACV at new company is 7k and sales cycle is 1-month.

So wanted to ask you guys/gals if you would view this as taking a step back in my sales career? I get that the day to day grind will be far greater with such a short sales cycle but I like the grind and the OTE is the same.

Please ask questions if you'd like me to clarify anything. I'd greatly appreciate your feedback.

50K in new ARR in 2 weeks, Possible?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 07:21 PM PST

Hi all, I want to get to new 50K ARR in Sales in 2 weeks to meet my numbers. In my mind, this is not possible with my current pipeline. However, I want to give this a true shot and not limit myself with my current thinking. I want to hear from some folks who have done it before and can provide some motivation/vision. If you have done it before, I would like to know what is my best bet to make it possible. What should I be doing for the next 2 weeks? My ACV is 5K - 10K.

How do I choose the right job?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2021 02:50 PM PST

Albeit being in sales, I tend to behave like a wuss when it comes to decisions.

Few months ago had two offers for SaaS SDR roles. One at a F100, decent base and OTE, but had to move and seemed to have more red tape. Took a job at a midsized and turned out to be a bad move. No one hit bonus/quota in months (was lied to), unresponsive reps, lots of customer complaints and massive red tape.

Still #1, since first month, but now on two offers again. One is F100, but still SDR, and have to start from 0 for about 2 years. Starts late May, but few acquaintances there say it's good. Other one starts now, but it's startup, better base but worried about having same problems. Both have good reviews on their products. Interesting tech on both of them. First prospect I'd need to move, second is fully remote.

Just not sure where to go. Worried I'll end up in #1 as a cog, starting from 0, versus second it's more aligned to what I want to do, it's fully remote, but worried I'll find out 2nd month they lied their ass off and I'm back to getting screwed.

What are some ways you decide which job is better for you when both have fairly same base and responsibilities?
