Need advice from experienced adjusters (made a huge mistake at work)

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 06:41 PM PST

So I was working this claim liability was pretty unclear, insured filed a UM claim originally but claimant and his carrier Allstate eventually contacted me 3 weeks later saying he was at fault. Basic facts of loss is that my insured attempted a right hand turn from a side street and claimant hit him in the rear. Insured argues that he was already established in his lane when he was rear ended. Claimant states insd was not established in his lane. Well I originally sided with claimant because in my opinion the points of impact matched up better with claimant story instead of insured.

My supervisor caught wind of this and basically made me take my claim to a panel of other adjusters, we all looked at it together and they basically determined since there was no police report and no independent witness we should side with our insured. So I plugged into the system that we flipped liability, sent Allstate a denial letter, no big deal.

Well about 2 weeks after denial letter sent, I received a subrogation demand. Without thinking, I paid it. I don't know what I was thinking, honestly it was just sloppy claim handling we had been getting a lot of reassigned files from layoffs. I have been stressed a lot lately due to this. The check to Allstate has now cleared. They have $6k from my carrier that they shouldn't have.

My company doesn't know yet. They will eventually find out when my insured sends me his UIM demand packet. It will have to go up the chain for approval and they will see. Idk if I'm going to be terminated maybe I will be, I honestly feel like I deserve it I made such a huge mistake. Any experienced adjusters can give any advice?

GEICO invoiced me $2700 nine months after cancellation

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:05 PM PST

I cancelled my GEICO auto policy in June due to some issues with them renewing it (not on my side). I then swapped to Progressive which I've been using since.

My June-December policy was meant to cost $1098 originally. Using GEICO timeline I can see that the policy was cancelled in June 2020.

Fast forward to March 2021, I get a renewal notice and invoice for $2750 due in two weeks. I contact support whom made another "cancellation" remark on the timeline, backdating to June 2020. I also have their original June 2020 e-mail stating it's cancelled.

Now the account says "you do not have a policy with us" and prompts me to call when I try to login using mobile/desktop. But I am getting e-mails showing my June-December 2020 renewal (not a typo) and the amount due. How should I deal with this if their agents do not fix it? I don't want to go to collections over a bill I don't owe.

EDIT: Cancelled South Carolina Geico policy in June (June-Dec) period and swapped to Progressive. Currently in Arizona.

Insurance on homes with aluminum wiring

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 04:14 AM PST

It seems that insurance underwriters don't know what to do with aluminum electrical wiring. Some accept it; some avoid it. Some try a middle ground by using the CPSC to define an acceptable remediation. However, a CPSC guide is different from a NEC mandate, and insurance companies have not done a good job in converting CPSC guidelines into clear requirements for their customers. I have written an article about this problem:

home owners city/ village vs country

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 03:48 AM PST

Is homeowners insurance more for a similar style and type of home in the country vs it being in a city or village?

My insurance agent always says distance to fire hydrant is important.

But he's not too responsive to inquiries about new property rates.

I'm in upstate NY, 30 miles from Canada.

Dentist In-Network but Location is Out of Network

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:49 AM PST

I made sure the dentist was in network before scheduling my appointment. I contacted them and emailed them my insurance information prior to my appointment and manager quoted me the in network rates. After my appointment I realized the billing wasn't what I was told. I called my dental insurance and they said the dentist has 2 locations and the location I was seen at is out of network location. I wasn't aware that the dentist owned 2 locations. I've tried to appeal with my insurance but it was denied. What can I do?

Car insurance doesn’t cover rental car accident! Need advice.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:04 PM PST

Rented a car and unknowingly it was in the midst of Portland's worst snow storm in decades.

Ice from a tree fell on my windshield, bounced off then cracked my fender.

Have car insurance but it does not cover comprehensive which is what weather-related issues fall under. Did not pay for the extra insurance at the rental car company. Sadly, I paid with one of the few credit cards (Discover) that stopped covering rental cars.

Got a bill in the mail for $2,395 just to fix my windshield and replace the fender. Read the breakdown and they even quoted labor costs of pairing the fender to 8.5 hours @ $37/hr. Saw a total of $860 for just a total inspection. Anyways, I know these things personally do not cost that much! I feel like they are just milking money. Is there anything I can do or should I just suck it up and pay?

    Can I stay on COBRA?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 10:32 AM PST

I am starting a new job this next week after being furloughed from my previous job since last March. I am still "employed" by my previous employer and intend to keep it that way until I am asked/told to return (mainly for my active vacation accrual, hopefully for health insurance as well).

The new job will offer me health insurance as soon as April 1st - I am curious though if I can remain on COBRA until I eventually leave my previous employer, at that point, would I trigger a special enrollment to then enroll with my new employer?

I ask because my current plan on COBRA is 1/2 the cost with slightly better limits than what my new employer offers.

    EDIT: I'm in Colorado

Can auto carriers deny a claim if you don’t use a shop on their list

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 03:25 PM PST

So I just recently got into an accident and my family friend owns a body shop but isn't on progressives list now for me being in the insurance industry I really don't deal with claims in general especially auto (unless it's auto owners than I just file the claim with their prompt) but can my claim get denied because I don't use one of their shops? (I feel like I should know the answer but I just want to double check)

can shopping around for quotes affect my insurance premium on current carrier if I have a ticket from 3 years ago?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 01:26 PM PST

back in late 2018 I got a traffic ticket. I've had the same company for a while now and have never really seen a large increase in my premiums. I was shopping around for quotes for my next car and other companies were about twice the price - they asked about my history for past 5 years so wanted to be accurate. Is this information shared with other companies?

maybe my current company is factoring it in already but was just curious because the rates i have been quoted for current company are half what others are quoting, and I don't want them to raise on me

I just purchased an insurance policy with progressive 2 days ago, I leave out to go to work this morning and see that somebody hit my car either parking or leaving a parking spot. Now there is collision damage to the front of my vehicle. I am covered with full coverage but I am worried is it too early to make a claim or will I even be covered? also I have no proof since it happened in the middle of the night and I don't know who it was since it is a crowded block will I be penalized for this what should I do? If it matters I am located in Chicago.

What is a “Estimate of Record”?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:00 PM PST

An Allstate insured crashed into my park car about a week ago. I went to go check my claim status and got an estimate of record document. It lists all the work that needs to be done on my car. Is the estimate of record the final step? They never sent my car to an auto shop instead I did some virtual meeting where I showed my car to the adjuster. How can they check damages with only that one video? What if there's damages under the hood?

Someone backed into me in parking lot. Filed claim with their insurance. Question about repair

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 05:04 PM PST

The other person backed out of his parking space and hit my rear-bumper. Left a bruise and the area is encircled in scratches.

If the other persons insurance company finds that the other person is liable, how will a repair shop remedy my vehicle? Will the rear bumper be entirely replaced or will they respray it all?

Hey all, I completely forgot to pay my auto insurance policy and my policy was canceled.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 03:37 PM PST

So my question, and it's partly due to fear of having to get another coverage which I am expecting a higher rate nonetheless. But I am curious what are the chances of Nationwide restating my policy? It was canceled February 16, 2021 and I noticed just today (March 6, 2021).

In case people ask, yes I have been unknowingly been driving without insurance.

Any information would be very much appreciative. I am stressing out a bit :/

Car parts stolen, can I file a renter’s insurance claim?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 07:06 AM PST

Hi, my Cadillac converter has now been stolen off my car 2x in 6 months. When I got my renter's insurance they said property theft out of my car counted towards what was covered in my policy. Is it worth it to file a claim for this? The car insurance deductible is $500 each time. I'm not very familiar with renter's insurance and trying to figure out how to best recoup my losses. Thank you!!

Insurance against loss of identity documents and access to your money, which really works?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:45 AM PST

Is there a way to make insurance whereby, when an insured event occurs (loss of identity and access my money into the banking system) insurer to assist me when I need help?

I asked insurers in my country. They say that they will pay me (via bank transfer to my bank account) after I get a new identity document. However, this is not helpful at all, because the money are needed because the identity document is missing.

In my country in order to get a new identity document the citizen has to pay in advance.

What happens when the citizen's money are in the banks? He can't withdraw the money from his bank account because the bank ask for an identity document. He can't get a new identity document because the passport office requires advance payment.

Legally operating fast loan companies and banks require an identity document to provide a loan.

This put law abiding citizens in an impossible situation. The only way out is to steal, work illegally or to get a loan illegally (from an illegal moneylender not abiding to the anti-terrorist financing and anti-money laundering laws). However, I don't know if such illegal money lenders can give a loan to a stranger.

When designing a system, edge situations are considered - situations that occur in extreme operating parameters. We should not look at what can only happen under the most favorable conditions. The most unfavorable conditions in which the system is realistic to operate must also be considered.

In this case we must assume that is possible that the person with lost identity documents don't have ability to take a loan from a friend, his debit card and phone are also missing, etc.

The document from Police documenting that the identity document is lost/stolen can't be used at the bank to withdraw money, banks require identity card, driver license or a passport (government issued photo ID).

Also I am interested in insurance that provide health services when the customer don't have a valid identity document (because it is expired, stolen, lost).

Of course I know that the identity document is needed to make the insurance contract. This is not the problem, the problem is what happens when the insured event occurs at a time when the insured does not have an identity document and a debit card.

P.S. I live in Bulgaria. However, I would like to know if there is such insurance service available worldwide. In case I decide to travel abroad.

P.S.(2) I am not assuming identity theft at all. This post is not about identity theft, it's about what happens when someone lose the access to their money because they lost their identity documents.

Will Humana cover a referral to a specialist from a physician that isn't my primary care doctor?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:08 AM PST

Possibly messed up a tendon in my finger, went to (in network) urgent care, x ray, no broken bone, urgent care doctor wants me to see a hand surgeon to check out the tendon. The urgent care doctor wrote me a referral, but she isn't my PCP. Will Humana (HMO Premier) cover the specialist visit with this referral? I don't have a Primary Care Doctor (just got the insurance) yet thats why I went to urgent care. The customer hotline isn't open until monday.

Question regarding cancellation due to nonpayment

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:34 PM PST

I have Dairyland auto insurance with a 6 month policy in place. I am a few days behind on this months payment. I enrolled with them last month and I have not payed my premium yet. They informed me that my coverage will be cancelled due to nonpayment of the premium on the 15th of this month. My question is if they drop my coverage I know I won't have Auto insurance which is illegal but besides risking getting pulled over is there any other repercutions to not having auto insurance for a little while? My car is all payed off and I know my rates would he higher when I shop for other insurance. I am in Texas btw. Any other downsides involved?

Does anyone know when my coverage will end?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 12:03 PM PST

Hello, I'm on my dad's insurance and I turn 26 this year. Can anyone tell me if my coverage ends on my birthday or at the end if the year? I know it varies, so useful info is that I live in Ohio, the insurance is Cigna's Open Access Plus with HRA, and I'll be 26 on September 21st. I've tried looking it up but I'm not really finding an answer. I'm only worried because I'm currently unemployed due to Covid and I'm worried about getting my own insurance be it independent or through a job. Any useful information is appreciated!

    LKQ query

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 09:44 AM PST

My wife and I experienced a house fire last year that was a total loss. We are in Maine, USA. Insurance has been fine dealing with it and apart from me putting in innumerable hours they have done their duty in helping us. I had a question regarding replacement items, specifically video games.

I had amassed a large collection over the past twenty five years and didn't necessarily plan on replacing every game, just those with sentimental value. As for the rest, do they have to be replaced with another video game to recover the depreciation? How does one categorize video games? Toys and Games? Electronics? Computers? I've asked the insurance company and they just mentioned LKQ which doesn't narrow it down enough for me. A video game for me is entertainment, a toy, an electronic with computerized components sometimes.

Any ideas or direction to literature would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and I hope your day is going well!
