Little brother (16) ran away from home because of abusive parents, is staying at my place and doesn't want to go back. Parents now threatening me with an arrest for kidnapping.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:23 AM PST

Friday at about 10 pm my (28 M) little brother (16M) and a friend of his (19M) knocked on my door. I live in IL, he lives with our parents in NC. I wasn't expecting him at all. He told me that he ran away from home. His friend drove him all the way.

My little brother has a very difficult relationship with our parents, this has been going on for years. Our parents are deeply religious and conservative, and they're becoming increasingly radical in their beliefs and downright hateful, and they're very strict and controlling with him. According to my brother it has become unbearable at home lately because someone at his school reported him to our parents for touching hands with another boy. They lost it, they're convinced he's gay (he says he himself doesn't know) and they want to send him to some "Christian boot camp" or something. According to him they're downright psychologically abusive and submit him to constant criticism and harassment. I believe this from personal experience. My little brother absolutely refuses to go to the Christian camp. I'm not 100% certain but I'm afraid it could be some sort of conversion "therapy" (it's not illegal in NC AFAIK). He ran away before they could send him, he's terrified of going there.

My parents don't know where he is, but they put 2 and 2 together and called me on Sunday. I said I didn't know where he was. They told me that if he shows up, I'd better call them because if I "hide" him, they will call the police on us, report me for kidnapping of a minor and get me arrested. My brother said he wants to stay with me because he wouldn't be safe going back. I honestly believe this to be the case.

I want to help my little brother but I don't really know what to do about the whole situation. I'm willing to let him live with me, even if there are issues (one of them being that he's still in high school). I'd like to know what his rights, and mine, are:

    1. Can our parents send him to this camp against his will?
    2. Can he stay with me if he wants to? He's adamant that he doesn't want to go back. I'm afraid he would be in a very difficult situation if he did and I'm not sure he'd be safe.
    3. Could I be accused of kidnapping? I'm not preventing him from going back to our parents, he just doesn't want to. All I'm doing is letting him stay with me.
    4. Is there a way I could get temporary guardianship of my brother if so he wishes?

More generally if anyone has advice about how we should navigate the situation I'll be grateful.

    Thank you.

    Workplace sexual harassment

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:58 AM PST

A couple weeks ago, I attended an online class for work that was voluntary.

Long story short, my girlfriend typed "8===D" in the chat while I was in the bathroom.

My manager confronted me on this and I was completely blindsided. I acted like I didn't know what they were talking about because at the time I didn't.

They said that it was brought to HR and they are doing an investigation because this falls under sexual harassment.

My now ex girlfriend thinks that this is hilarious. Prior to her doing this, we had gotten into an argument and she did this with the intent to get me in trouble.

I am worried about my job.

EDIT ** I don't know if this makes a difference, but laptops aren't used for my job while I'm at work, so there's no policy on locked laptops. This was just an unpaid, online class that I voluntarily signed up for to learn more about products.

    Location: Ontario Canada.

My parents are threatening legal action on behalf of the perpetrator because my sister and I talked about a sealed court case on social media. (Utah)

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 06:54 PM PST

Sorry, this is the type of thing I don't understand at all and am nervous about. My dad posted on social media that his parents turned my little sister against him. I commented and pointed out that she was forced to live with the sibling who sexually abused her for three or more years under the age of ten (cohabitation happened after their sentence) and kicked her out last year when she was a minor (she was never in danger, I went and picked her up and now she has a stable place she lives). My Dad deleted the comments, and then the post. My sister decided to post on her Facebook about her story of abuse. My parents went nuclear, in simple terms, and demanded she remove it because it might be seen by mutual friends.

The sexual abuse was prosecuted and since it was committed when the perpetrator was a minor, the case was sealed and eventually expunged when they were over the age of 18. My parents are threatening to sue us for talking about a sealed case, on the perpetrator's behalf. Is this a legal protection to underage perpetrators? I've never heard about anything by like that, and no one was directly named in the post and comment.

Note: I've learned my lesson about social media and have blocked all my immediate family, and my sister has changed her account to private and has decided to post advocacy groups and support memes from now on. We're both no longer in contact with all immediate family.

I'm just really worried that I accidentally broke the law and it's going to come down on my sister or our support group. Is there a precedent or something i might've unknowingly done wrong? This all is in Utah.

Edit to add: she mentioned when she walked in on one of my younger siblings being assaulted and how it exacerbated an undiagnosed trauma disorder, and a couple kids that go to one of my younger sibling's school saw the post, and asked my sibling about the post. Would that be something they could sue over, also?

Neighboring landowner blazed a dirt road through my property (California)

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 10:10 PM PST

    Hi all!

Just over a year ago I purchased 5 acres of desert land near Palmdale CA. It is very scenic and natural. I regularly rent it out for film / music video shoots and sometimes camp there.

The land does not have direct road access. There is an old dirt road that is no longer serviced by the county that leads to within a few hundred feet of the property. When I purchased the property, there was a short, driveable dirt trail that connected the abandoned county road to the property. This dirt trail briefly cuts through an adjacent parcel. When checking google map history, I can see that this dirt trail has existed for 25+ years, before the current parcel lines were drawn by the county. This dirt trail ends near the center of my property, and I had cleared a parking loop at the end of the trail for me and my friends/clients to park in. I understand that I may need to get an easement from my adjacent neighbor in order to continue using this trail for access, but that is not the topic of this post.

I visit the property regularly and went there today with a client who is interested in renting the land for an upcoming film shoot. When we arrived, I noticed that the dirt trail access had a high number of large tire tracks that were not there on my last visit. When we pulled into the parking loop I had cleared, I noticed that several of my bushes had been cut down and a large dirt trail had been blazed through the end of the parking loop and into the center of the property. I followed this new trail to its end. It meanders through my property and a number of other parcels before stopping at a newly-built wire fence with "Private Property" signs posted. This wire fence clearly aligns with a neighboring 10-acre parcel. I can only assume the owner of this parcel blazed the trail through my property and the others to access their own.

I also keep an outdoor lockbox on the property that has some various gardening tools, water jugs, and buckets inside. This lockbox had been pryed open and, while no items were missing, the lockbox no longer closes properly and needs to be replaced. I counted 4 sets of individual footprints around the lockbox that don't match my shoes.

I'm aware that I need to put up my own fencing and private property signs, but I haven't had the time/money to install these yet. I'm also daunted by the task of fencing in an entire 5-acre plot. Interestingly, I had placed small wooden stakes at each of the corners of my property. Someone has since added small orange flags to these stakes, indicating that whoever was here is aware of my property boundaries.

I'm willing to work out some sort of easement agreement with this neighbor if they need to access their property, but I'm not willing to let them use the current route this trail takes, meandering through the center of my property. I also need to be compensated for the cost of my damaged lockbox. I'm also a little upset about the amount of bushes they cut down, but new ones can be planted. It's possible that they cut down or removed one of the many Joshua Trees on my property, but I don't have a detailed record of how many trees were present or their locations. There is a point on one of the neighboring properties where a Joshua Tree was obviously cut down to accommodate this new trail.

I've considered writing a letter to the owner and leaving it on their property, calling the local non-emergency police line to report the incident, or (the most expensive option) hiring a lawyer, but I'm not sure which action I should take next. I currently have no idea who this owner is or any way of contacting them.

A huge corporation wants access to my property to clean (EPA is making them)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:16 AM PST

A major corporation is coming to talk to me in two days (they're sending a civil team) about access or easement on my property for a project. The EPA is having them replace contaminated soil in the creek and on my property near the creek banks.

They have already mentioned they would pay for any fencing or sheds (which I have both near their project). The project lasts the entire summer. Most of their project affects my home as well as the neighbors to my left and right.

What type of easement would this be? What rights do I have? What should I watch out for? Can I sell the easement?

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Location is Indiana, United States

EDIT 2: For more clarification, they do not own any property around me (to my knowledge) and I own both sides of the creek banks in my parcel of land.

Wrecker company will not allow me access to my property (GA)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:52 AM PST

I totalled my truck out 29 days ago. I only have liability insurance. I've gone to the wrecker yard 3 times before today, and have not been able to get my things out. Twice they were closed during their normal posted business hours, and once an employee erroneously told me my vehicle wasn't in their yard. Today I caught them open, and had proof that my vehicle was in their yard. I told them I needed to get some things out, and find out how much I owed them. I was then informed that I owe them $1300 for towing, and storage fees, and I would not be allowed to get anything out of the vehicle until I paid the bill in full. After I argued with them, I was told I could bring the title to them, and pay them $650 to get my possessions out. They refuse to take off any money for the times that I showed up to get my vehicle, and they were closed, or was told that they didn't have it. I'm just curious if it's legal for them to keep my things from me that are inside my vehicle. Thanks in advance.

Edit to add: I called their posted number several times over the last month, but my calls and voicemail were never returned.

Ex-wife has supervised visitation our daughter (due to factitious disorder) but her parents allowed them to be alone, so what consequences will her parents face now

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:19 PM PST

Location for this is Florida. My ex-wife has supervised visitation with our three year-old. Every other weekend for seven hours and ever other Wednesday for three hours. She lives with her parents and they are to supervise the visitation (ie she cannot be alone with our daughter at all, one of them must always be present). I am the only one who make decisions, take her to the doctor, pick her up at daycare etc.

The reason for the supervised visitation is because my ex-wife has a diagnosis of factitious disorder. She has spent time in jail for faking cancer before. She is banned from certain hospitals except for emergency care. Even now she continues to insist she has diseases she doesn't have. It was a nightmare during her pregnancy and her self injuring for attention ended up putting her into premature labour because she jumped off a porch to say she broke a bone. She spent time in an inpatient facility after that.

After she was in a car accident in Georgia while she was alone in the car with our daughter (while her parents were in a different place in Georgia shopping after my ex-wife dropped them off) my ex-wife was arrested for driving without a license, talking on the phone while driving and running a red light. The other driver had serious but non life threatening or altering injuries. Our daughter broke her arm. And both cars are destroyed. My ex-wife has temporarily lost her visitation and I'm going to court to make that permanent. But I'm wondering what if any consequences her parents can face for not supervising her. Under the court order they must not leave her alone and they knew the rules about no out of state travel. The court knows because of my wife losing visitation so what if anything will happen to them?

At what point does a neighbor's noise create conditions so unlivable that one can get out of a rental agreement with an apartment complex?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:10 AM PST

Basically the title. I have the world's most obnoxious upstairs neighbor, and my apartment complex is not willing to do anything to get him to stop playing with his dogs in the middle of the night or blaring his b-list rap during my work meetings. So in Georgia, how loud would a neighbor have to be for it to constitute "unlivable conditions," such that I could break my lease? Alternatively, how successful would (or could) I be if I tried to just convince my apartment complex that their failure to act on this matter violates our contract?

Local PD grossly mishandled my property crimes case, and I might have angered my violent felon neighbor. (Southern CA)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:49 AM PST

    Good morning r/legaladvice,

I live in a house, but our culdesac has a group mailbox (all individually locked). I commonly (several times a month) get my across-the-street neighbor's mail, and always promptly return it - it's a mostly friendly neighborhood. This has never struck me as an issue before, however, my naivety has bitten me on the ass for it.

I frequently receive letters from the VA (I'm a vet) which have the last 4 of my SSN on them. Several months ago, my neighbor (with a nearly identical address) returned a VA letter to me and the envelope was slightly torn - it appeared to have been opened and resealed. I didn't question it too much at the time, but now I know my mail had obviously been rifled through and they were rewarded with my SSN for it. Six weeks ago I applied for a Bank of America credit card and it was misdelivered to who I assume is my neighbor. USPS confirmed that it was delivered to the locked mailbox for the culdesac, but can't be certain to which box. Whoever received my credit card managed to activate it by confirming my SSN and birth date (neighbor's daughter and I are acquaintance's, and she has me on facebook - possible birthday leak, as well as birthday parties I have had in the past that they were aware of), and ran up tens of thousands of dollars on the card. I discovered, cancelled the card, contacted BoA fraud dept, submitted a police report, etc etc. Whoever received the card also applied for several different personal loans using my information. When BoA and my local PD weren't really doing anything, I acquired the following evidence myself:

-Date/time of all charges (Through BoA)

-Phone number of caller who activated the card (Through LexisNexis)

-Identity/address of person who pays for that phone number (Surprise, it's the matriarch at my neighbor's house)

-Surprisingly good quality video of my neighbor's 28 yr old son (who I did not know until I researched him further is a felon on parole) purchasing $1500 of auto parts at an auto store, WITHOUT HIS MASK ON, with my credit card. And then 3 minutes later, coming back in, making ANOTHER $300 PURCHASE with no mask on, and leaving. (Through auto parts store LP team)

-Several other videos of same man in same clothes (wearing a mask this time) at two other locations using my credit card. (Through various stores LP)

-Several OTHER videos of who I assume is the same man, on different days with different clothes at different locations using my credit card. (Through various stores LP)

I have had zero contact with my neighbors. However, I have fed all this information up to both BoA fraud and been updating the detective assigned to my case constantly. BoA fraud department is pretty tight lipped about their investigation, but I assume the vendors are the ones eating the financial responsibility, so they're not going after my neighbor's son. The police, however, have continuously and repeatedly told me that sometimes there's just legally nothing we can do. They've quoted statistics to me about how identity theft/credit fraud often goes unsolved. They have told me all of this evidence is likely unusable in any kind of criminal proceeding. They were the ones who initially encouraged me to reach out to the vendors to get the surveillance footage, as they were stretched thin and warned me that vendors frequently dump surveillance footage offsite and it's much harder to get then.

I have done everything the police have asked of me. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, who stole my credit card and identity. I have video proof on multiple different cameras, I have his face without a mask at an auto parts store, I have his phone number down as the one who authenticated the card. The guy is a felon on fucking parole. The police have still done nothing. The "detective" for my case is actually just a school services officer who helps out property crimes from time to time when they're busy. The property crimes Sergeant has continuously told me it is unlikely my case will be prosecuted. I feel unsafe in my home now knowing that the felon across the street so wantonly stole my identity and my credit card. I'm afraid of any civil action against him, because his crimes were violent. Is there any grounds for a civil suit against the local PD? Can I get any kind of reprieve from my neighbor's son? What outlets do I have for ensuring my own personal safety going forward with this?

TLDR; My neighbor's son has been looking through my misdelivered mail. Found my social a couple months ago. My BoA credit card was misdelivered a while ago, he ran it up and at the same time, applied for several other personal loans in my name. I cancelled card, went to BoA fraud, and local PD property crimes. Neither entity helped much, so I did my own (legal) investigation into it and found his phone number was used to authenticate the card, him on video at 5+ vendors (twice without a mask + good quality video) using my card, and found he was a violent felon on parole. All info forwarded to PD. Weeks later, PD still refuses to prosecute and quotes statistics at me about how unlikely it is to catch identity thiefs/card fraudsters. I'm also afraid to file civil suit against the guy, because he's a violent felon who is also my neighbor. What are my options to protect myself against my neighbor's son, and what are my options to get the police to do their job? Also, do I have a civil suit against the police?

(M26) I believe I've been discriminated against at work and I don't know what I should do next

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:07 PM PST

I live in Alabama. I used to work for Publix and in the handbook it says that you can dye your hair natural colors. I dyed my hair brown (I'm a black man with dreadlocks). I was told by a supervisor that not only am I not allowed to dye my hair brown, but that they only hired my with my dreadlocks because they said I gave them religious reasons (I never gave them any religious reasons).

I set up a formal complaint with Publix HR and I was told by the person doing my investigation that it's not natural for black people to have brown hair and that my supervisor was right. I argued with them and we ended that conversation. I got a call later from this investigator and they told me that they want to offer me my job back plus back-pay for the months I wasn't with them.

I feel like they know they transgressed me since they are offering me this. Should I try to negotiate or just get a lawyer/attorney at this point?

My manager wants to control who I go on break with. Is this allowed?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:56 AM PST

Hi guys, just to give you guys a run down, my managers hate me and my 2 of my coworkers for absolutely no reason. I work in Toronto, Ontario. We work in 3 different departments so we're not around each other at work and other then just saying hi to each other we don't talk. We go on our lunch together as it is the only time we can socialize with each other. Management has now called us all into separate meetings telling us that we're not allowed to go on break together. Is this allowed? Also does having paid break matter in this situation?

Landlord wants to raise rent because they are moving out but still expects dog care and the ability to crash here once in a while (Washington).

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:54 AM PST

    Hi all,

To summarize, my landlord is wanting to raise my rent from 825 to 1250 starting April 1st because he is buying a new home. For the past few months, I've watched his dog while he is away (he's a pilot) for a reduction in rent (825-325 out to 500), so this would be more than a 60% increase. He quoted the price of 1550 based on what a realtor told him, supposedly, and is "being generous" by making it 1250 instead. I know he needs to give 60 days notice for a rent increase, which he hasn't, but I'm not sure if there's anything else I can do. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Edit: This is Washington State. King County and the city is Kent.

Sold Motorcycle, Buyer immediately listed it for sale the next day.

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:09 PM PST

As title states I sold a motorcycle the other day to a couple guys. They paid in cash, I signed off the title, and had them fill out a bill of sale for my records. However they left the buyer portion blank on the title and left. Next day I found they immediately reposted the bike for more then what I sold it to them for which is fine flipping vehicles and what not. My concern is I know the bike is still in my name... is there anything legally I should be worried about or is me having the bill of sale with the bikes info and their signature along with mine and a witness good enough to protect me until they sell it and a new buyer registers it?

I am in Michigan so vehicles stay registered in a persons name until a new person registers it.

    Accidental trespassing

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:48 AM PST

Let me start of by saying I did not see a sign that said no trespassing nor did i see any purple paint. I live in Pennsylvania USA

I went to a local spot to look at the stars and eat my lunch while on break for lunch around 2am. I assumed it was public property because alot of people go there for sled riding with their children during the winter and the cops never do anything. Today I was stop? more approached by my local police department and they told me this was private property and they took my name and ran my license plate and all that good stuff then just asked me to leave after I came back clear. Should I except something in the mail about going to court or just let it be?

A guy (24M) recorded me (19F) having sex with him without my consent. Please help.

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:07 AM PST

Sorry if the formatting is a bit goofy, I've got a lot on my mind. I posted this in r/advice, but I thought maybe I should post it here too, just for more input.

To get straight into things, last night, a friend of mine came over and hung out. Im 19F and hes just about 24M. We drank and ended up having sex. When he left to go to the washroom, I looked over to see his phone propped up against the window towards me. I get up and look and its recording. I immediately stop the recording and ran back into the bed. He didn't ask me for permission to record so I was pretty shocked. I didn't mention it for the rest of the night, because I thought it would be better to confront him the next day when he's sober and able to fully understand what he did.

Today is the next morning, he's still here, as we are classmates and doing online school together. He hasn't mentioned the video at all, even when I said a couple things that would have definitely jogged his memory. I don't know what to do, or even how to react. I feel weird and I've been shaking all morning, but a small thought in my head keeps on telling me it's not that big of a deal.

I don't know if he still has the video, or if he deleted it. I tried to check his phone when he was in the shower, but his phone was dead.

I'm planning on confronting him after we write an online quiz today, but I'm genuinely a little bit scared. Should I record the conversation just in case something happens? Or if he admits it?

Do I have the right to be angry even if he deletes/deleted the video? I feel like this is a big deal but at this same time I have no idea. I don't know what my course of action should be right now, and I'm too scared to tell my friends or family for help.

I live in Canada if you want to know for the legal aspect.

    Thank you.

TL;DR: A friend (24M) came over and recorded us (me, 19F) having sex without my consent. I don't know how to feel or what to do. Any advice helps.

Mother in law died in car accident. Other woman walks away Scott free

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:53 PM PST

So my mother in law passed away about a year ago(3/10/20) in a car accident. The other car was badly damaged but the woman driving it was fine my mother in laws car was totaled and she was declared Dead on arrival by the police. While the police tried to see who was at fault for the accident they never wrote a report because the Accident Data Recorder or black box in the womans car had been set off by a previous accident and they couldn't verify that she was the cause of the accident. Naturally after the funeral and much mourning for our loss, my wife stated to seek restitution from the other driver and her insurance company for the death of her mother. After almost a year and a police report never being finished as of today her lawyer told us that after one year the statute of limitations is up and we will have to sue the insurance company because the only thing they are missing is the signed affidavit from the woman who struck my mother in law in the accident. But they said they have received no word and have failed to contact her on multiple occasions.

Now I don't know why everything is being done like this. Why the police can't finish a report after a year or how this woman gan just walk away from this entire incident and killing my mother in law without so much as a slap on the wrist or a speeding ticket.

Could anyone out there please give us some advice on how to move forward or if there's anything we can do beside sue the insurance company. Anything helps, thanks.

    Electrocuted at work

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:21 AM PST

    (Massachusetts)

On Saturday, I was working in my supermarket job. There is a device that goes around the store and checks for spills. It pages the entire store where the mess is and will go off until the reset button is pressed. Upon pressing the button, I was electrocuted by the device had pain as well as a loss of feeling in my hand leaving my hand feeling strange. I didn't lose consciousness or fall. I reported it to my managers and I was laughed at about the issue. A half hour passes and my hand still hurts so I bring up the issue again, this time I'm met with seriousness and it's reported. I'm sent to the ER where I undergo a series of lab tests to make sure there's no injury to my muscles, heart, or kidneys. After a couple hours, I'm told there's no damage that they've detected and I'm released to go home.

It is not Monday and my hand still hasn't regained the full sensations I had before the incident and my hand feels icy in comparison to the other.

Backstory in case it matters, a couple days earlier a customer assaulted the device until it was nonfunctional and it had to be worked on.

Where do I go from here?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 05:25 PM PST

    Hi All,

Last week my neighbor's dog, who was unleashed, entered my house as I was returning from a walk with my own dog. Their dog is a pit mix whereas my is a terrier mix. Neighbor's dog had my dog's tail/rear in its mouth for an extended period without letting go. I had to take my dog to the vet to ensure there were no unseen injuries. The neighbors are completely aware of what happened/saw what happened and apologized.

The neighbors are refusing to pay the $250 vet bill since no injury was found. I filed an animal services complaint, have a documented vet visit reason of "dog attack", and a witness. Do I have enough to take this issue to small claims court? How would the court view this?

    Thanks

Sister-in-law stuck with kids and emotionally abusive husband in Texas

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:08 PM PST

Maybe this isn't the right place, but it seems like a good place to start.

My SIL (39) emigrated to the US from the U.K. a few years ago with her husband and 2 kids (boys, 7 & 9). I don't know all the details of their immigration status but they both work, legally, one in the education sector and one as an auditor. Although they are not yet citizens, AFAIK.

Myself and my wife have long suspected that something isn't quite right with the relationship and everything seemed a bit rocky before they left. But in the last couple of years the relationship has gone downhill in a horrible way and she has become something of a prisoner in her own house. She is subject to constant emotional abuse from this man, who refuses to care for his children but will torture her and belittle her for her attempts to look after them. He has mentally beaten her into submission and has left her scared to attempt to come home. He doesn't care about SIL and is quite liberal in saying so to the kids whenever they try to talk to him. He doesn't want anything to do with his children, but won't allow her to take them. Having spoken to her recently she seems very close to a breakdown and she is terrified of the repercussions should she try to leave.

What can I do from half a world away? Is there a legal direction I can set in motion from here to get her and her kids away from this guy?

    TIA

[MT] When going back court to amend a parenting plan, is it true that the only evidence we can present has to be from after the last parenting plan was put in place? What about new evidence from prior to the last hearing which hasn't been presented before the court yet?

    symptoms dismissed until organ necrotic

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:05 PM PST

Let me just jump right in:

For two years I (F24) have had intermittent, sudden onset, extreme pain in my lower abdomen and pelvic area every couple of weeks, unrelated to my menstrual cycle or any particular activity. The pain would only ever last for 20-30min, but during the attacks the pain was excruciating, to the point of nausea and sometimes even vomiting. After that there'd be soreness and discomfort in the region, but no real pain.

I went to the GYNs countless times. She said nothing appeared to be wrong an equal number of times and sent me to the GP, who said I must be constipated. Then she said I must have IBS. Then she said I must have anxiety. She actually recommended I should see a psychotherapist for psychosomatic pain.

I saw a few other doctors but admittedly quickly gave up, because none would give me anything but "oh ovulation pain" or "constipation" or "you're imagining it".

Last week, I had my right ovary removed in an emergency surgery for suspected appendicitis, and it was necrotic. Apparently, for the past two years, what I had been experiencing was my ovary twisting itself off the blood supply repeatedly, then somehow untwisting itself, and repeat until it slowly died.

For two damn years I was dismissed by every damn doctor I saw. It's not the first time. When I was 18 I had a fragment of a kidney stone in lodged in my ureteres for 8 fucking months, causing intermittent renal colics. And, of course, I was recommended damn psychotherapy then as well.

I'm done. I want to sue whoever the f I can sue. I don't want to just take the L of ANOTHER unnecessary medical complication caused by sheer incompetence and sexism.

Retaining wall shared between me and neighbor, they wont help pay

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:15 AM PST

I have a retaining wall that is shared between me and my neighbor. It needs to be redone because the trees have cracked through it and grown underneath it and its dangerous to my houses foundation because I am close to it. They wont agree to pay for it because it doesn't bother them as its far from them. Are they responsible for chipping in to pay for it? It is dangerous and needs to be fixed.

HOA is fining my mother for violating their "standards" over number of bedrooms - changes she made after transitioning to wheelchair

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PST

My mother's HOA apparently has a buried "standard" that every property must have at minimum 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. They say this is to ensure that the homes maintain similar values for the sake of the neighborhood.

Mom's house had 3 bedrooms but one of them (as well as one of the bathrooms) was very small. Two years ago when she switched into a wheelchair she had that part of the house renovated turned 2 bedrooms+1 bathroom into a larger bedroom and larger bathroom that is easier to navigate in her wheelchair. This turned her 3 bedroom into a 2 bedroom.

The HOA contacted mom and said that they 'periodically review property records to stay informed about the community' and noted that while their previous records indicate she has a 3-bedroom, they see that the county now lists a 2-bedroom. They asked if it was a mistake and said if it was mom should contact the county to correct the error on the property search site.

Mom ignored this and felt it was none of their business. Now she has received her HOA dues for the next quarter and they assessed a $795 fee for quarter 2 of this year for failure to comply with their housing standards. They said as a courtesy they did not charge her for quarter 1 and if she corrects the issue before April 1st they will waive the fee entirely, or she will be charged quarterly until her property complies.

Mom joined the most recent HOA meeting and explained that it was because the previous bathroom could not accommodate her wheelchair, and the HOA was extremely unapologetic stating that she could have went another route like adding onto the house to maintain the 3-bedroom status, and they can't make an exception for her or they'd have to make an exception for others yadda yadda yadda.

Mom is hoping to rally support from her neighbors, but I'm worried for her - she doesn't know any of her neighbors (she is deaf and struggles to make contacts) so I am posting here for another hot take on this. Since these changes were made to help her get around in her wheelchair is that enough? Or is it possible she'll be forced to literally add onto her house to add another bedroom?
