Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Since this post does tend to get busy, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

FI is making me feel even less motivated to get anything done - advice? Book recommendations?

    Posted:

Hi all. I was wondering if you could provide some perspective. I am a 30 year old scientist.I am not close to FI but I recently realized that I am in the position to be there in about 5-7 years if I keep plodding along in my very stable job. However, this realization, while it is something that I always wanted, is making me much less motivated to get anything done. I could phone it in and probably do fine until I RE.

I guess I was wondering if you had any advice. I feel conflicted because I should be celebrating this but at the same time I feel very sluggish and unmotivated now and for some reason feel bad about that. Any book recommendations would be helpful as well.

    Thanks!

EDIT: I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who provided some insight. I'm glad to know that a lot of people can relate to this. Collectively, you've all given me some really helpful things to think about.

What's your worst financial mistake ?

    Posted:

I'm 20 and only recently started investing and I managed to put about 7k USD into the market around December - January after about 2 months of playing with around 2K. I recently lost about 1.2K / 7K because I decided to sell everything and rebalance it but now that I am clear headed, I should have just held on till it's even then rebalance or sold earlier.

I was balls deep in Ark and Tsla and other growth stocks that took a hit.

Might not sound like much but this is about 13% of my net worth I pretty much threw down the drain because I had weak hands. On one hand I guess I won't make the same mistake again (probably) and it proved to me indexes aren't all that bad seeing as it still went up after all that shit + I shouldn't have been married to my positions and diamond handed it (thanks Reddit)

Stocktwits, WSB and several echo chambers didn't help either.

Future vesting of pension vs opportunity cost

    Posted:

I am 27 years old and leaving state employment after 8.5 years of service for the private sector. I paid 5% into pension & retiree healthcare fund.

My pension vests at 10 years, retiree healthcare at 15. I'm unsure if I'll ever comeback, however I can leave funds for up to 8.5 years to pickup where I left off......

So, let's say I ensure after a year I will not go back. Would it be worth waiting that entire 8.5 years to ensure I won't incase I can pickup where I left off and vest or should I invest the funds I paid in? I also should note neither can be touched until 63 without penalty.

I have two rentals currently and can use funds to purchase another two, or invest other-ways.

    Thanks in advance
