I feel like I might be in a little bit of a different boat here than most posters on this sub. I've created a very niche USB device for Windows PCs. I've made it well over the hurdle of "make it real". It's no longer just an idea, but an actual product, and I'm very proud of myself for following through on it.

    But...

Overall, it's not fairing nearly as well as I'd hoped and I can't quite put my finger on exactly why that is. Even on subreddits like r/pcmasterrace, where I thought it would really take off, my posts fall flat. IDK if it's because the market is even more niche than I thought or if my (very low quality) marketing materials just aren't catchy enough.

I've put 6 months time into this device and I know there are people out there that are interested... but it is going to be a very, very specific set of people.

Would advertising to reach specific markets (like those interested in x or y similar products to mine) be on the table for me at this point? I'm just scared to spend the money if I'm being honest.

Can you work as a contractor and create your own products in the same limited company?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:43 PM PST

I want to start a mechanical engineering r&d firm in the near future and I'm considering different financing options. I was wondering whether it would be possible to market myself and other members of my team as contractors and work full or part time for another company on contract then in our spare time I want to design my own products that we then sell. When we're contractoring use the money earned from the contract work, after paying everyone a salary, to fund the research and development projects. I was wondering whether this is acceptable practice or if there are any reasons this isn't a viable option?

What's the best way to go about launching a beta website after you've collected your early access sign-ups ?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 02:34 AM PST

💥 We're launching an online platform that's made for Freelancers to sell their services online. Past couple of months have been spent collecting early access sign-ups (Freelancers/Employers)

We're almost at the point of launching and I'd like to get your thoughts on our approach :

    // Platform password protected

Step 1 Send code to approximately 500 freelancers Step 2 Share how to guides + support articles Step 3 #3 Monitor for glitches / offer live support

    .....3 Weeks later

Step 4 send code to approximately 150 potential buyers to access website.

Could use your thoughts on the the following🙏

    1. Would you keep the website locked for beta launch ? If not, why ?

    2. Currently, we have mock accounts to simulate the final look of the website with live users. Our thinking is that as a freelancer, you would want to see how a finished profile / service looks like before creating your own. We're taking them off after enough accounts have been created. Good idea ?

    3. We're planning on inviting potential buyers about three weeks after freelancers have signed up. Would Freelancers loose interest waiting or do you think it's a reasonable wait time ?

Any other thoughts would be highly appreciated.

    Cheers guys.

Asked join start up but as contractor?

    Hello,

I am looking for some input on a situation/opportunity. I was recently approached by a Startup to help them build out a software product. They are currently in the eCommerce space selling physical products. They want to build out a software product and sell it to their customers. Based on this software product they also want to raise capital. We discussed a few ideas on how their software product could add value to their customers. We discussed verbally that I would help them build out the software product in exchange for equity.

Essentially I will be the only Engineer/Technical person working on this product. I would have to design and develop everything from Database, Back-end, Web front-end, to Mobile App (iOS and Android).

I received an agreement document from them but I was a bit surprised to find out that it is essentially a contractor agreement with equity based on some milestones. No cash compensation. Each milestone has a portion of the equity attached. Some of the milestones are tied to the number of users using the product.

Edit: Just to clarify, I am not a freelance developer and I am not interested in becoming one. If I work on a start up I would want to be a partner especially if I am going to build the entire product from scratch.

    Questions:

Is this the common way to bring someone on? If not, what is an alternative method to form this relationship from a legal perspective.

I feel uneasy about having the equity be tied to the number of users. Am I justified to feel this way or am I in lala land?
