Looking for friends who are business oriented mindset Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:17 PM PST Hello, All yesterday I posted on EntrepreneurRideAlong that I am looking for more friends who have biz mindset, and people suggested to create discord chat. The chat overnight grew from 0 to 170+ people. There are many tech guys who runs startups, but there are not so many small business owners. I run Boba shop in Cali and would love to make friends with other small business owner. DM or come join the discord and lets be friends! Here is original post https://www.reddit.com/r/EntrepreneurRideAlong/comments/ltdufl/looking_for_friends_who_are_business_oriented/ I am looking for friends who have business oriented mindset. Not sure why but for me its easier to find common topics to talk with people who are business oriented mindset. We can chat about business, life, challenges, victories etc... Most of my friends who are not doing business think those topics are boring, so I don't have anyone to talk with after I have started being self employed. Edit: Few people to ask about discord, so I just made one: https://discord.gg/jNZt4tteYB (not sure if I made it correctly ) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Feb 2021 01:42 AM PST I have an employee who's been working with me for over 7 years whom recently reached a annual 50k salary in south Texas. He's has been in the past a excellent employee, hard working, great initiative etc. However for the past 2 years I have been having multiple issues with him such as tardiness, overusing his personal cellphone in excess at times of 20-30 minutes during downtime, lack of wanting to help customer and upsell etc. At times I honestly don't think he wants to be here anymore and even feel like avoiding bringing up issues thinking he might want to leave (which many of you may say well have him do so, but he does have skills hard to replace) When I confront about it, I don't feel like I get a clear answer of what the problem is; sometimes it's relationship, family, or just debt but he is poor at managing his money. It's always like he gets his act together after talking to him for 2/3 days and I'm back to where it started. In short the reason for holding and taking this for so long is because he does have certain skill that are hard to pass on to others as well as he does know pretty much everything about the business and takes a huge load of my back when working correctly. I know recently one of our conversations was he wanting to earn more to buy a house and he brought up the idea of own day perhaps owning a small stake in the small business to motivate him more, but in my head I'm like how can I even consider these things with your poor performance. I wouldn't mind paying more for more performance, but I'm afraid of giving and not receiving or him falling short on promises and shooting myself in the foot. I'm in a position in which I'm lost as to what to do; I could be strict and continue to get after him but I'm afraid it could lead to more poor performance. Perhaps maybe include commission to motivate him. Or should I bring onboard another person whom he knows is near he's capabilities but will cost me significantly more because he does hold a degree and just replace him, my only worry is that if I make this decision that the new employee stick around for a good deal of time. Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:51 AM PST The reason I am curious is because I never would have guessed I'd have started a business doing what I'm doing now. It was a series of completely random things that led me here. In high school I planned to join the military but I got in a motorcycle crash right before I was going to ship out and couldn't go. Worked a summer job and ended up staying a few years because I was no longer going into the military. Had a coworker talk me into quitting saying I could do better. Went to college to please my parents, dropped out after being miserable and a hard push from a business professor to start the business idea I had (doing what I did at my summer/3 year job).....and here I am. None of this was the plan. But I also regret nothing. How about you? EDIT** Everyone's asking what I do and I've been trying to reply to comments but I figured it's just easier to put it here.... I have a glazing business. Installing glass in residential windows, custom glass showers, glass tabletops, glass shelves, gym/dance studio/bathroom mirrors, glass railings, commercial storefronts, commercial curtain wall, commercial doors, etc. [link] [comments] |

Augmented Reality mixed with a renaissance festival? Feedback please Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:43 PM PST You're the customer, you walk in the door ladened with medieval video game style decor and themes. You're told to download the app (you have to have a smartphone to use your "magic") You're offered to rent some armor or costume for the day or can bring your own (after you get checked by security, we don't need any accidents unless you can re-spawn.) You pay a fee to begin your quest which is similar to say, Skyrim, one big quest and many little ones. Looking down at your phone you create an account and access your camera. You press a button close to your thumb that activates your clairvoyance and a misty blue line appears guiding you in the right direction. You have a limited amount of magic so you can't use it all the time. You recharge your magic by visiting shrines or something? Probably have a concession stand next em or something who knows. everybody gets thirsty. You collect real world items and bits and bobs that you turn in to a vendor and he exchanges them for the fake currency which is just a QR code laminated in the shape of a coin or something. You can use the in game currency to upgrade your costume or whatever, haven't thought that far ahead. Staff members throughout the business will act as NPCS (non-player characters) and be part of different quests (tasks that make you collect ingredients for a potion, puzzles that unlock doors or chests for any number of fun rewards. Rewards can be coupons for food and drink or in game currency used to improve your character. I've thought of so much more detail, even larp style combat where players can beat on a staff member thats wearing thick padding/armor as if they were a MOB in a game. When the staff member deems they've been defeated they give loot to the players via AR on the ground or whatever. This is probably a liability issue but would add so much to it. All you want to do in a game is fight and collect, right? Assuming the entire designated area is outdoors/indoors is a customized video game style theme park and there is new things to do, different rentals available, new sections built and quests etc etc

Thoughts about broker approaching distributor we already have a separate arrangement with? Posted: 28 Feb 2021 03:01 AM PST We currently sell a decent chunk of our main product to a large distributor. We have a broker who wants to send a new variety of our products to the owner (who the broker has a close relationship to). But we just had to raise prices on this distributor with covid and if the broker approaches him/we do, we don't want him to think that a broker fee is already priced into our main products being sold to him. Our concern is that larger distributors would feel they're getting a better deal from a different supplier with no broker costs built in. [link] [comments] |
Is there a Need for Instant Deposits for Credit Card Receivables? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:37 PM PST I am curious what other business owners think about the having your credit card transactions instantly deposited into your bank account. For example, if you process cards today you actually get the money today. Traditionally, you have to wait 1-3 days depending on your time zone to actually receive your credit card processing deposits into your bank account. If the processing rates were the same would you value same day deposits enough to work with that company instead? [link] [comments] |
Order in which to sign documents ? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:04 PM PST Planning on offering contract services to a client. Already got incorporated along with appropriate licenses, insurance etc. Is there a standard process/ order for working out a contract with a client? For example: 1: letter of intent 2: detailed meeting with client to go over scope of work, deliverables 3: statement of work 4: contract between client and contractor Is this correct order? Am I missing something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 04:29 PM PST Hello, all! My partner and I own a very new and very small business crafting body care products and currently only have an online presence, no brick store. We only recently went live with the website and are still under 20 sales (so obviously pretty new). i received a message via our contact form on our website inquiring about a bulk order - we have never sold anything to this individual. The message reads as follows: "We extend our kind interest in some of your products, we are an international supplier. Do you accept private pickup by our freight forwarder? Do you have a minimum order? Do you accept visa or master card for prepayment on your credit card machine manually? A price list if possible? I await the requested information so that I can proceed with the ordering". First red flag - an international business supplier with that poor grammar? Not knocking someone if they're of foreign descent, as I'm only a first-gen American, but not even capitalizing the "i"? Second - why are they asking about prepaying on a credit card machine manually? Third - I did a quick search of the company, and the top two results on Google wouldn't let me open the page (kept getting an error), and the third says that the company is based out of NY and brings in $37,000 per year with one employee. Idk, for an international supplier, sounds kind of sus, but who knows. Does this sound scammy to anyone? I'm certain we have never sold to him before, so why would he want to purchase in bulk and ship it overseas? Has anyone ever encountered something like this? Thanks all! Sorry if this sounds paranoid - we're a new business and you can never be too careful with scammers nowadays. [link] [comments] |

What Happens When You Accidentally Hit #1 on Hacker News on Launch Day? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:59 PM PST Last Sunday, my post "Are You Trading or Gambling?" hit #1 on Hacker News. This happened during the debut of my substack newsletter - Investing Lessons. Unfortunately I was asleep when this happened, so I was notified of the news by one of my readers. Below is a screenshot of my post ranking #3. Here is some of the craziness that followed. https://imgur.com/a/DG1smST The Journey to #1 Most of the time when you submit a post to Hacker News (HN), your post hits the front-page and then rapidly fades into the abyss. However due to the amount of karma upvotes and the comments it was garnering, it persisted on the front page for several hours. Once it had by far the most karma and comments out of the other posts, it quickly climbed to #3 before being stuck at #1 for the rest of the night (when I was asleep). Here is my substack stats: https://imgur.com/a/VXYaygv Throughout the entire night, I was unable to concentrate on anything as I saw the view count explode through the roof. I tried to stay awake during this phenomenon, but was promptly yelled at by my partner who told me that I have an early morning the next day. What was surprising about this whole situation, was that my post was far removed from the hipster tech posts regarding cutting-edge machine learning frameworks. It was simply a post sharing the thin line between gambling and trading, from the perspective of someone that had worked on Wall Street. Fun Metrics (First 24 hrs) Submission Time: February 27th 2021 2pm (GMT+10)
Conversion Rate I was quite surprised to see that only about 1% of viewers converted into subscribers. I am not entirely sure what the industry benchmark is, but it certainly does feel quite low. This could be attributed to multiple reasons such as not having a strong call-to-action or having only three posts up. Needless to say, I certainly was not ready for this. While 30,000 page views in 24 hours may not seem like much to some, it certainly was the most I have ever gotten. Additionally, I was taken back by the amount of thoughtful personal emails I received - a phenomenon that had never happened before. The audience on HN also skews towards smart, influential individuals (often in tech). I am guilty of Linkedin stalking some of my new subscribers, and was shocked to see that some were Staff Engineers or VPs at Investment Banks. Emails Received In total, I received about 10 emails with the general gist being congratulatory and supportive.
Hacker News Top Comments I was surprised to see the snarkiness of some of the comments. It was a masterclass of witnessing the Dun Kruger Effect in action. There was an individual who insisted that my points regarding bet sizing were not true in high-level poker play, only to be shut down by a crowd of professional poker players. It was quite amazing. For the most part however, it did facilitate some good discussion. Feel free to take a look at the HN comment thread here. How Did I Hit #1? I don't know, it was pure luck. Seriously. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:17 PM PST Does anyone have any information regarding filing taxes for an Llc specifically in Maryland. My brother and I started a food truck in 2020 50/50 partnership and between profit on paper and start up cost we did not make any money nor did we pay ourselves out of the business on paper. So I am wondering what I need to do to file taxes on behalf of the business. Do you guys think I should pay an accountant even though we didn't make money. Or has anyone done it online through something like TurboTax? [link] [comments] |
Securing Funding - Acquiring First Business Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:21 PM PST Hey everyone I recently graduated from university last may. I'm currently working my full time "adult" job and a part time job. The PT gig is a liquor store I've been at for going on 5 years. The stores been an integral part of my development as I'm about to turn 27. The owners want out. Very successful couple approaching retirement who just want to enjoy and do other things. They're involved as both employee and manager respectively. The store is established and profitable. I want to own this store more than just about anything. I've been involved in all aspects of operations throughout my tenure here. I'm confident that I can handle both my current job and ownership of the store. I'm just curious how I can go about securing funding to acquire the business. I don't have any family backing but I've got close family friends to cosign when needed. My credit isn't great and I've got some student loans. Is this a feasible dream or should I just forget about it all together? Her price is beyond fair and I'm aware that I won't be able to take a paycheck from it for a few years to ensure its success. I'm just reaching out for some info. Thanks in advance. How to find niche market buyer for agriculture products Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:37 PM PST Hi, I'm Indonesian. In our country there are lots of agriculture resources available. For example Amorphophallus muelleri, plant which is uncommon for production in Indonesia now in recent years become famous because someone found buyer from China and Japan for that product. He found the buyer by searching on the internet. I try to find buyer as he do but until today still haven't found any clue at all. Maybe someone here can show me the right direction? As for the information regarding exporting agriculture resources I found, is only for the plantation product only such as coffee, tobacco, cloves, fruits etc. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Issues with Emails - Not Receiving/Sending Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:18 PM PST I'm having lots of emails never make it to me and several outbound emails never making it to the recipient. How are y'alls email systems set up? I have GSuite/Gmail with my own domain. It's super worrisome. I've reached out numerous times to Gmail and they always recommend things I've already done (messing with spam filters, setting up DNS records, etc). I've heard about transactional emails but I'm not sure how they work... [link] [comments] |

Advice for Starting a Small Business based in NYC Posted: 27 Feb 2021 03:31 PM PST I am building a business based in NYC, and we are about to register for an LLC. Our transaction base isn't limited locally to NY and we anticipate having a fair share of international business coming in. Wondering if it's worth potential additional fees and paperwork to register our business in more SB tax friendly states like Wyoming, South Dakota etc.. Appreciate any and all advice for this early stage in our small business, thank you! [link] [comments] |
