A thief stole about $15k of stuff from my storage unit in the secured garage of my apartment complex.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:54 AM PST

About $15k of my stuff was stolen from my storage unit near Seattle. Camping stuff, fishing stuff, kiteboarding stuff, snowboarding stuff, and a tool chest was taken and seen in the back of a pickup truck caught on camera exiting the secured parking garage at 3am. Unfortunately, the image was too blurry to read the plates. Also, renters insurance only covers about 1/3rd the cost since it was not stolen directly from inside my apartment.

The apartment staff have been almost useless, and don't seem to care about this happening. They did provide the PD with the blurry image. They refuse to provide any information to me, including entry access logs or additional photos. There are multiple cameras in the garage and I find it hard to believe a clear picture wasn't available.

Here are some pictures of my things. I've been trying to browse FB marketplace, offerup, and local pawnshops.

Dentist is threathening to sue me for 10 million dollars because of a negative review.

    Posted: 25 Feb 2021 05:41 PM PST

This all began when I went to a new dentist. When I found out that the dentist operated beside a church on a trailer I began having doubts. This dentist explained that he had a clinic but only used the trailer on the weekends. When it was time for my teeth to be x-rayed the equipment didn't work because of "internet failure." Turns out he was using the church internet. I made the decision not to go back again. A few months pass, and on a whim I decided to check my insurance. While perusing through my insurance, I noticed that I was charged for unrelated services regarding my last dental visit. I was charged for x-ray which I know didn't happen because his equipment didn't work. The most he did was clean my teeth and he charged 150 for that which I was fine with. I went to the facebook page of his clinic and found that other people were also complaining of overcharging. Obviously unhappy I left a negative review saying that I had a bad experience and that he was overcharging. I also contacted my insurance to look into the charges made. Another few months pass and I received a voicemail saying that "I am going to sue you for 1 million dollars for slander and defamation." In the call I could tell he was seething which was great but he also threatened to sue me which was not great. In the same day I called my insurance for a follow up and they told me that when they asked the dentist to provide proof of why he charged for that particular service he could not provide any. I would like to know if I am going to be a prospective homeless person in the coming months.

State is NM if anyone's curious.

Edit: Typo in the title, supposed to be 1 million not 10 million.

[PA] Neighbor's sewer line has been overflowing for three months, raw sewage is running off into a creek that runs into a National Wildlife Refuge. How to report the issue/who to contact?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:56 AM PST

    Located in Pennsylvania.

These neighbors moved in roughly a year ago. The home was previously vacant for a number of years because of the work needed to make it habitable. The major issue was the sewer line needed to be completely replaced ($$$) and most interested buyers didn't want to take on the task. The new owners supposedly repaired the line and moved in after renovations were complete.

Note: This property is also bordered by a multi-acre bird sanctuary which is home to a large amount of wildlife. There is everything from threatened reptiles, songbirds, eagles, mink, foxes, etc.

In early December, my partner and I noticed the smell of raw sewage when walking in the bird sanctuary by their house. A different neighbor (one who lives next door to the offending house) told us the smell was due to the new neighbors having a severe sewer blockage. Sewage was overflowing and running out onto the lowest point of their property, their driveway.

Their driveway is less than 10 feet from a creek that runs into the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. From their property, it is only 3 miles until the creek meets the wildlife refuge. People fish, swim, and kayak in this creek.

We were under the impression the issue was fixed as our county coincidentally replaced the street's sewer line in late December/early January. That was until a few days ago when, again, we smelled sewage when walking in the sanctuary. I learned today that they never repaired the line and apparently have no intention to. Sewage is still overflowing. Our area has had a staggering amount of snow and rain in the time this has been happening, so a large amount of raw waste (there are 5 people living in the home) has run into the creek.

I spoke to a friend who sits on our local Parks and Recreation board, but he was surprisingly blasé on the issue. I believe I need to go higher up in the chain but I am lost on who to reach out to or how to report this.

Mini Update: Called the county, they suggested I contact local code enforcement regarding this issue. Code enforcement did not pick up when I called so I emailed the director. Based on a recommendation, I have also contacted our borough's council president.

The director of a local association that oversees this watershed put me in contact with PA Fish and Boat, who will (hopefully) be getting back to me shortly.

My apartment complex refuses to unlock the utility closet that’s inside my unit where my AC and water heater are so I can inspect them.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:21 AM PST

My new apartment complex is giving me quite a bit of issues but this one is by far the weirdest issue I'm having with them. I just moved in it's on my move in check list to check the filter/ water heater but they're refusing to even unlock the door. It makes me uncomfortable that there's a locked closest inside my unit to begin with we had a very significant storm that caused damage to plumbing across texas and I even was switched to a new unit before move in due to burst pipes I have no idea what condition the water heater is in which is only adding to my concerns. I've requested several times to open the closet any advice on how to handle this would be greatly appreciated as I don't see how it's legal when it's inside of my own unit.

Shouldn’t we be paid if we’re not allowed to leave?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:39 AM PST

On mobile so sorry for any bad formatting.

I live in Virginia and work at a fast food restaurant. A couple months ago the power went out around 5pm. We blocked off the drive thru and finished doing small closing tasks then clocked out. We weren't, however allowed to leave yet unless specifically told we wouldn't be needed again. We sat around unpaid for 2 hours until the power was restored and we reopened. I then worked for about 25 minutes before being sent home because we didn't have much business. Today the system went down and we weren't able to store or finalize any orders. We closed the store for about an hour and a half and were forced to clock out. Again we were not allowed to leave because the system might get restored at any moment. Doesn't this fall under the on-duty waiting times section of the Fair Labor Standards Act?

According to what I found on FLSA waiting times

    On duty (would be paid):

    • is not engaged in the work for which they were hired;
    • remains subject to the direction of his or her employer;
    • is not able to effectively use the time for themselves; and
    • is unsure as to when the waiting period will occur and/or how long it will last.

Off duty (would not be paid):

-is completely relieved of his or her job duties and is told such by the employer; - can leave his or her workplace; - is free to use the time for personal purposes; has sufficient time to take advantage of being relieved of all work duties; and - is aware of the specific time he or she must return to work.

We had no clue when or if the power or system would come back on so we had no specific time we must be working again. We were allowed to leave to go to the Taco Bell next door that did have power but weren't free to leave and stay at home and obviously we weren't working.

I know Virginia Labor Laws are a little weird so I didn't want to go straight to my employer without knowing everything. If I am right and we NEED to be paid, how do I go forward? Is there somewhere I can report this? Thanks for any help in advance!

Piece of industrial equipment was delivered to my house by mistake 3 months ago. What can I do now? iowa

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:51 AM PST

A couple days before Thanksgiving a large piece of industrial equipment was delivered to my house by mistake. I was not home at the time, and it was delivered by a private freight carrier who used a forklift to drop it off in my driveway. My neighbor texted me about it (he thought it was a hot tub lol) and I assumed someone would realize their mistake and come back to get it, but when I got home the following week it was still there.

It is labeled with my home address, no company name or name. I couldn't figure out where it was sent from but was able to contact the freight company that delivered it. Because they delivered it to the correct address, they were not willing to pick it up, but after I bugged them enough they gave me the name of the company who paid for the shipment.

The company is a vaguely named liquidation company in another state. By the looks of their crappy website, they buy out places that go out of business or go bankrupt and then sell the crap. I called them and they said that someone purchased the machine and paid for the delivery to my address. They emailed me a scan of an order form which has his name phone number, and my home address. According to the form he paid $16,000 for the equipment. He actually purchased it in April 2020, but it was not delivered to my home until November 2020 - no idea why. However the phone number he gave them in April is now disconnected.

Other than the scan the company was generally unhelpful - the lady I talked to suggested maybe a friend or family member had bought it for me as a surprise gift and asked if I know any Johns or had a birthday recently. Nope.

After a month of back and forth the company finally agreed to have it picked up again on their dime and taken back to their warehouse, but said it would be a couple weeks because the freight company is slow due to COVID. They were supposed to pick it up on 2/12 but did not.

I contacted the freight company who tells me that the company did contact them for a quote to ship a large item from my house to their warehouse and when it could be done. Freight company says they responded with a price and date but the company never made the payment, so they didn't pick up the thing.

Now there is a message on their website saying the owner of the liquidation company died in December, items must be picked up from their warehouse by 5PM on January 20th. I also searched their street address and the warehouse is listed as available for lease by a different company (who I assume owned the warehouse and the other company just rented it.)

This equipment is valuable but of no use to me. At this point I am at a loss for what I can DO with it. Can I give it away? Sell it? Am I obligated to try and find the company owner's heirs or the guy who paid for it? I just want it out of the way of my garage at this point.

My boss plans to sue me if I leave for military boot camp. (Colorado)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:34 PM PST

I'm a teacher for a small private music studio and signed an employment contract. I found out that my ship date is in April. He went off on me and said my navy recruiter can write "military order letters" until he's blue in the face but the military contract will not supersede his contract. He said if I leave for boot camp in April, he and his attorney will take me to court. My recruiter said to just mention USERRA laws if he gives me trouble. So I did, then my boss said he's never heard of that in his life and that it won't null and void his employment contract with me. I recorded the entire phone conversation just in case. My recruiter said "no worries. Please leave for boot camp, he won't sue you, trust me."

I'm still worried. Lol. My employer said he can sue me up to $5000.

My bro (34) apparently has a 10k education fund he's never used that my uncle has had or kept (?) for him since our dad died when we were teens over 20 years ago. My brother asked for the account to be transferred to him or cashed out and have the money sent but my uncle is refusing...help?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:01 PM PST

So my uncle is blocking my brother from getting the money by basically putting stipulations on him receiving the money and basically wants him to move out of his current living situation and told him "when you find a place let me know and I will send them the money" but I don't think that's right at all. If it's his money, it should go to my brother, period. Right?

    What is even going on?

Does my uncle have any ground to stand on here? Am I wrong for being absolutely incensed & outraged over this?

(not sure about that flair tbh, 🤷‍♀️)

Can I request death by dignity prior to me developing dementia?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 03:21 AM PST

[New mexico] Is it possible to make a legal agreement that states when I reach a certain point in dementia im killed? The document would be signed when im like 25 so I wouldn't be making the decision while being incompetent for my own health. Could it happen? Or would my kids or something declare me mentally incompetent, gain power of attorney, and then revoke my legal choice to die if I reach that stage?

My child was molested by my 12ydm stepbrother

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:48 PM PST

Okay so...long story short. My 4 year old daughter was touched inappropriately by my 12 year old stepbrother. When she told me I made his mom,and my dad aware I was going to file a police report. I took my daughter in the be questioned. And thankfully she was able to talk about the situation and tell them the truth. The detective said they'd get back to us after questioning the 12 year old. Today, the detective called to say the case will be closed since they've questioned him...and he stated he'd never touched her. Only spanked her to show her "what her mom would do if she kept shutting the door" ( this was how I knew something was going on because my daughter never ever has shut the doors in our house. We have hooks on the door to prevent them from closing. Due to our 9 mon old.) he's also had been showing weird behavior while in my home. Like sneaking into her room asfter I've asked him to leave her alone. Sneaking her away from the backyard, and shutting the back door quietly...so I wouldn't hear him sneaking her to the back bedroom, and when I went to push the door open. He was sitting in ground of the shit door. Why didn't they ask him about his weird behavior..???!!! I'm so upset!!! I left my daughter with my dad at an earlier occasion. And my 4 year old mentioned the same thing was going on. When I talk to her, she shows nervousness and frustration...she tells me "mama I'm promise I'm telling the truth. I'm not telling a laughing joke". So as of now, the case is closed. I feel like she has no justice...and the kid has been let off the hook so easily. Is there something else I can possibly do!!!? HELP PLEASE!!

If I get a lawyer, to do more investigation. His mom will not comply. She didn't even want him to talk with the detective. I know she wouldn't move forwards after this either.

Website it's using my pictures without my consent and earning money from it.

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 10:12 AM PST

Hello! I hope I'm doing this right. It's my first time posting here and I really need your help. I'm from Spain btw.

I recently discovered about this website. It uses a lot of pictures +18 of people from Reddit. In my case they didn't asked for my consent (and I'm sure they did the same with the other people...) They are also using my name like it was me.

There's no way to contact the website or the people who manage it and I won't create an account to discover what other awful things they do.

The website has a lot of advertising, so yeah, they are earning money publishing photos that don't belong to them and without any consent of the models.

I'm pretty sure this is illegal, the pictures they are using (in my case) are deleted from my page and they don't have my consent. As I said I don't know who is the creator of this site, any advice?

I also thought I should contact the other people they are using on the page.... How should I proceed?

[OH] Can I break lease if my landlord doesn't provide me with garage?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:46 AM PST

Per the contract, my landlord is supposed to provide me with a 2 car garage. Up until recently, I didn't have a need to use it, so I never asked for it. The parking lots are right outside my unit, and the area is quiet residential area, without any weird stuff going on.

But over the last 2 weeks we've had a lot of snow and foul weather. So the need to use increased significantly.

Is that reasonable grounds to break the contract?

The contract is poorly written, and doesn't have a "Early Termination" clause. It only mentions that I can stop living if there are repairs that affect my ability to occupy the space, thus putting me in a weird spot and I have to ask strangers about this.

I know where I want to live next, and could move there within a weekend, if needed.

Edit: My apartment is part of a condominium association. Previously, when I had question about general deterioration of the building in which I live and the parking spot, my landlord just threw her hands in the air, and pointed me in the direction of the COA Management company. I called the management company, and they said that there's no garage associated with my unit.

My ex-boss is threatening legal action against me, he says that after they let me go I hacked their instagram accounts? what can I do (Toronto, Canada)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:09 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I worked for a company since May 2019 until March 2020, I was let go during the pandemic, same as other employees. I used to have access to their social media (two separate accounts) as the social media manager wanted me to help her with some social media stuff.

He (my ex boss) wasn't happy with me, and he fired me in a horrible way on December 2019, and then a week after told me that I could stay and we would re-evaluate every couple of months. He never brought it up again, and then after the lockdown happened he called us all telling us that he had to shot down and we would all be "maybe temporarily, maybe not" laid off. He never called me back and I just let it go and found another job.

I started texting him a couple days ago to ask him for my t4, (the income form to do my 2020 taxes) and he wouldn't respond. I was worried and texted again and he responded "yes, I will send it to you, one text is enough, also be aware that along with the t4 you will get a letter from my lawyer, as I'm taking legal action due to the illegal actions you did by deleting our instagram accounts last september that you had access to"

I do not have access to the accounts, nor have I had access to those in a long time. according to what he said, this happened in September 2020. I have not being an employee since March 2020, and didn't have access to the accounts since then. I even had the passwords written on a notebook that I left at the office in march, as I thought we were only gone for like to weeks when the lockdown started.

I'm super scared because of course I don't have proof of not having access to the accounts? also I don't have money to do this shit. My biggest fear is that I'm an immigrant and my permanent residence is in process right now, I'm scared because I have no idea what the possible consequences of this are.

Please any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated, I'm incredibly stressed and scared.

    Thank you all in advance.

[MD] Resigned from position at school, I have received an insane amount of abusive messages from the teachers at the school

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:35 AM PST

I was a substitute teacher at a school and there was a massive unannounced strike out of the blue.

Anyways, for a great part of this situation I was in charge of over two hundred children at once because none of the teachers were present and I was the only one at the school. I resigned based off the aggressive and abusive comments made about me when I was on the phone with the other teachers asking them to come back to work because we had a major problem.

So I reigned due to those reasons. Over the past few days my Facebook account was leaked among the teachers and I have received countless abusive and threatening comments because I left the schools toxic staff and now they are a teacher short again. I have been called horrible things, they have also began a petition to the board of education to revoke my certification to teach.

I want to make clear, I did nothing to these teachers, they went on strike unannounced, and left me with their students.

I have screenshots of these comments, I just want to know if there is anything I am legally capable of doing to make them stop.

Also, it is worth mentioning that several PTA members and parents have banded together and are planning on suing the ring leaders of this strike as the strike resulted in 200 children being packed into our largest room, which couldn't be safely spaced and could have and might have become a super spreader incident. Is it possible to attach these comments to that lawsuit? I am already in close contact with those members about the incident.

She's been turned down in 2 different states because of this two different times by at least 10 or more hospitals. And now insurance wants to kick her out of the hospital again before placement, she legitimately attempted suicide and it's saying she should have been discharged immediately. Is there anyway to bring insurance or the hospitals to help her. I don't want to lose my sister this will be the third time she's been sent home still suicidal. Is there anything myself or my parents can do? I have spent the last year in a makeshift inpatient area by my parents so she couldn't do anything but she still did.

Neighbor going out of his way to block shared driveway (NC)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:48 PM PST

My friend recently built a small campground on some property he owns. The campground has a shared driveway that goes past a neighbors house and a church.

The neighbor has to go out of his way to back his car out of his private, fenced in portion on the driveway and parks it in the shared portion so that nobody can get by. He's done this multiple times and police have been called but they say there's nothing they can do.

Is there anything short of paving a new driveway that can be done to get this neighbor to stop?

Is my renter liable for the damages caused by a clogged toilet?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:14 AM PST

I am located in Southern California. A few days ago I discovered that water was leaking profusely through the ceiling of my garage. After calling a plumber, it was discovered that it was caused by a blockage of wet wipes that had been flushed down the toilet by our renter. She had been told before to not flush these wipes down the toilet in the past and by common knowledge, wet wipes are known to clog toilets. Current deductible for all damages is $2000 and it is expected that she cover all costs.

Current claims by the renter are the following: 1) friend explained to her that blockages happen all the time and that leaves her not liabable for any damages 2) wipes that were pulled from the pipes could have been their before she even moved in and she is not liable for any damages

Do these claims hold any legal ground?

    Squatters Rights in Texas

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:31 AM PST

My husband's father recently passed away. He has owned a home in Texas for at least 15 years, with only his name on the title. Several years ago, he was living in that home with his elderly sister (who passed away before him), and her adult daughter (his niece) moved in. The niece is a rather unsavory character and leeched off of my FIL and his sister for years, even after he expressed his desire for her to leave. When Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, the septic system was pulled out of the ground and the home was declared a total loss. My FIL used the insurance proceeds to pay off the property and moved into a FEMA trailer, where he lived until he died. The niece and her boyfriend have effectively been squatting on the property ever since. They have not fixed the septic system, and they have not paid the property taxes. I'm not sure if the place even has electricity. My husband and I recently paid all outstanding property taxes. My husband recently went to check on the property, after my FIL passed. That was when he learned they are living there. The niece claims my FIL gave her the property. This isn't true as far as we know. She didn't have my FIL's current phone number, hadn't communicated with him in some time, and was unaware of his passing. Their relationship was contentious (borderline elder abuse) when she and my FIL were last in contact. He definitely did not transfer it to her on paper. I feel like this could get messy. Do the niece and her husband have any rights to the property, since they've been squatting on it for a few years? What of their claim that he gave it to them? Where should we even start, to get this sorted out?

Can a freelancer demand a kill fee when a large job is cancelled, without having negotiated in advance for kill fees? [NY]

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:07 PM PST

I'm an NYC freelancer. I had a large job split into 4x unique chunks. I was 1/4 done when they canceled on me, days after they expressed an extreme urgency for the remaining 3/4s of the job, roughly a month's worth of work. Remaining costs for chunks 2, 3, and 4 were around $20k.

I am paid up for the 1st chunk of work I've done so far, but I turned down another job ($10k of potential work) that I couldn't have fit in at the same time. I'd also done significant advisory prep work for the remaining 3/4 of the job, that was never listed out as its own cost, but would have been covered for me by the fees for the other three chunks.

I'm wondering how much of a leg I have to stand on, in demanding:

    - Kill fee of 50% of the next (2nd) chunk of the job.

    - Kill fee of 25% of the 3rd and 4th chunks.

    - Day rates (based on standards for my industry) for the prep days spent prepping for 2nd, 3rd, 4th chunks that we are now not doing.

We had fixed project rates for each chunk. None of the above kill-fee costs or prep day rates were spelled out in advance. The client has been absolutely gung ho, constantly expressing desire to move forward full steam, etc., so I feel it is reasonable that I took steps under the expectation that I would be paid our agreed upon project rates, and have now suffered losses when the remainder of the project is cancelled.

We do not have a formal signed contract, but we do have numerous email threads expressing the scope of the work, prices, their agreement and desire to move forward, etc.

As a secondary question - all of the agreements and negotiations have been made with another freelancer who was managing the job, and brought me on. That person has been paying me directly, though has always been clear that they are working for the client. Do I go after that person, who technically was the one to engage my services, or do I go after the client at the top of the food chain?

After signing a plea deal in a criminal case. Why would the prosecutor still send a trial date?

[IL] Roommate's parents are having their mail sent to my rental. They live out of state. Can i get screwed?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 12:55 PM PST

My roommate (RM) have been living together for just shy of 5 months now, and i found out last week that their parents regularly get mail delivered to the house we rent. They do not live here, they don't even live in this state. I pressed RM today on why this is the case and RM gave me a vague answer of "He wouldn't be able to get certain documents to theirs" and "I think it has something to do with his union". I know messing with mail can have serious legal ramifications and my concern is they are using my rental as their address to do something shady/illegal. RM is a good long term friend of mine but i never really knew RM's parents. RM is not on the lease, only myself. I also suspect this may be a long running thing, as before RM and I moved in together I believe he got their mail at that address. So i suppose my question is, given the circumstance, do i have anything to worry about legally? Am i over analyzing the situation or is this more serious than I understand? Any advise is appreciated!

(Colorado) Lawsuit being filed against me for accident caused by icy road

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 01:38 PM PST

I was in a car accident in late 2019. I was not impaired, driving under the speed limit, and was thrown into the other lane by a patch of black ice where I was hit by two pickup trucks. I was cited at fault with a Careless Driving Charge simply for being on the road after a snowstorm. I received a notice that I have a lawsuit coming against me because the damage (totaled) to one of the trucks (which was practically brand new) is above what my insurance will cover (by $14-20k higher) My insurance says in these cases they will hire an attorney on my behalf if I choose. I am low income and this would be extremely damaging. What legal recourse do I have? Can I negotiate a lower settlement or have it dismissed? Are insurance company appointed lawyers reliable?

    Thank you.
