Sister registered co-owned house in California as an ocean going vessel in Liberia Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:14 AM PST This is a weird situation so let me explain: A few years ago my sister and I inherited a house together. She lives there with her family and I live a few towns away. The agreement was that she doesn't pay me any rent but she is supposed to pay for homeowners insurance and the property tax. She has been going increasingly more crazy from Covid and her latest batch of insanity is that she hired a lawyer in Liberia to register the house as an "ocean going vessel" based out of Monrovia. This is a normal house located 100 miles inland in California. I've seen the paperwork she got from the Liberian Ship Registry and it looks very official. Its on special watermarked paper and some of the documents have foil seals. Its way too elaborate to be someone scamming her out of the $1000 she supposedly paid for this so I think that she did actually manage to register the house as a Liberian ship. My sister believes that because she is technically living on a Liberian ship that US law no longer applies to her. Among a large number of other crazy things, she thinks this means she does not need to pay taxes, which is where my question is: What is the risk to me here? The government is obviously going to find out when she refuses to pay her taxes in a few months. Can I be charged with treason (or anything else) since my name appears on these documents. Do I have to worry about the army invading the house? Should I contact the State Department or do anything else? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
HOA claiming intent to add property is sufficient to force us join. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:52 AM PST Can someone explain the basis of legal intent. We live in Maryland. A homeowners association is suing us to force us to join on the basis that the developer intended to include our house in the HOA but failed to file the paperwork. He died in 98 our house was built in 2007. Hundreds of houses were "left out" not just ours by mistake. Most people got scared and signed up after being served. We bought the house in 2019 with no HOA restrictions, after checking records the deed has never been associated with an HOH. Do they have a case? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:04 AM PST This is in USA, AR. My wife and I got pregnant in 2019. It wasn't planned and we weren't married. We rushed our wedding planning that we had so we could get married before the baby was born. Before we got married my wife applied for Medicaid to help cover pregnancy costs. She filed with her parents address. The office took forever changing her address and when the baby was born in June of 2020, they had yet to change the address. The hospital staff told my wife that having a different address than the baby would cause problems. So, without my knowledge or talking to me, my wife filed my daughters Medicaid with her parents' address. This has now caused hell for us. The PUA and DWS thinks that I don't live with my daughter now and are trying to get my wife to serve OCSE papers to me. We have a joint account and have lived together for my daughter's entire life so far. We have emailed and called different offices who have all said they would handle this, yet we have gotten monthly notices since a month after our daughter was born. How do we resolve this issue. Bureaucracy sucks and we can't get in contact easily with any offices, so it's been really frustrating that when the rare occasion happens that we are able to get in contact with someone, they say they'll fix it and then never do. Please what can we do to fix this issue as quickly as possible so my wife doesn't lose her Medicaid, which they seem to be implying to do if she doesn't file to get child support from me. Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:13 AM PST (New York) I paid the designer, and it wasn't until recently people started mentioning that it was from a kids TV show, and I had no idea. I already invested in having marketing materials and packaging printed with this apparently stolen mascot. What actions can I take against the designer I hired? [link] [comments] |
[OH]S/O had a full blown psychotic break, in facility. How do I protect myself and my daughter? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:21 AM PST I will keep it brief, my S/O and I were not married but have lived together 4 years. Our daughter is three years old and severely autistic. We were engaged which as far as I know means nothing legally. She had a full blown psychotic episode, detached from reality (demons, wolf spirits, said she was sent back after dying to save reality), and attempted to leave with the child during an episode. This is her 4th time in an inpatient mental health facility but the first time it's been a full blown psychosis. What steps can I take to ensure custody is mine in the face of this? I cannot pretend I trust her anymore, the severity of the episode cannot be overstated it was terrifying. She's unfit to serve as a parent, most definitely if she is alone, and the relationship is very likely ending. I am quite literally scared for my daughter's physical safety and just want to protect her. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:13 AM PST My wife's employer opened a new office a couple months ago in a building that is shared with another medical practice. The company she works for is a national company. She noticed that the network they were having them connect their iPads and desktop computers to was the guest wifi (no password required) of the other practice so anyone in the entire building or parking lot can get access to the same network. She reached out to an offsite manager about the potential risk to the company's computers and risk of exposure to patient records and data and he dismissed it saying they have an IT department and bragged about how much they spent on a sonic wall but they aren't allowed to contact IT on their own. She then asked if there was somebody else over him that she could share her concern with and he said that he felt that she was talking threatening to him and opened an investigation into her "conduct". Even though the on-site physician and another coworker have reached out about their concerns in the previous weeks. But nothing has been done. She fears she might be fired for reporting the oversight and is wondering if she should start documenting any correspondences? Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:34 AM PST Small business, 3 employees, medical office I am struggling with my mental health and haven't been performing my best at work. I informed my boss about it (and that I'm seeking treatment) in January and took a leave of absence in February. Upon my return this past week, my boss asked for my resignation but reminded me that my contract states I must work 30 days after resigning. If I do not complete the 30 days, I must pay her back minimum wage for "hours expected to work" during that 30-day period. In the past, she has taken this money out of employees' last paycheck. Since I have not resigned, she's placed me on a "probationary period" and lowered my salary. She's piled on a ton of extra work and is treating me like dog poop...so much that other employees have noticed I'm at the end of my rope and almost suicidal because I don't see a way out. I want to just quit and amicably go our separate ways but I can't afford to pay her back all that money. A lawyer offered to review my contract but it would cost $250 What can I do? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:58 AM PST Hello, I am posting this for a friend: For background I own a rental property in Nebraska and have 3 tenants. Also, there is a no pets clause in the lease. A few weeks ago Tenant B was watching her sisters dog for the week. Tenant A brought a friend over and the dog bit her while she was in the house. This morning I received a letter from a law firm representing tenant A's friend who got bit. They are saying I am liable since I am the property owner and are seeking damages. Am I liable even though there was a no pets clause and I had no knowledge of the dog? Should I respond to the letter from the lawyer or wait until I actually get sued? When should I retain a lawyer? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:20 AM PST Alabama, USA In January 2019, I got a letter in the mail from the IRS stating that I was audited and owe $2000 in unpaid state taxes from 2012. I was 15 in 2012 and did not have a job so there was no way I had unpaid taxes from that time. At first, I thought it was a scam. I called the IRS and they confirmed that it was indeed a real letter. Someone had used my social security number and other personal information to file taxes in my name. That person received a federal refund from this but apparently owed the state. Over the course of 7 years, that unpaid state tax accrued interest and got up to $2000. I filled out identity theft paperwork with the IRS, they did an investigation, and it was concluded that I was the victim of identity theft. In March 2020, that $2000 that I "owed" was actually taken out of my tax refund. I finally got that money back at the end of 2020. While I can't say for 100% certainty, I believe my mother was the one who did this. My mother was extremely abusive growing up, she has threatened to use my social security number in the past (I actually still have text message proof of this), and she was going through financial troubles between 2010-2012. I currently have a restraining order against her and I have had to file a theft report against her as well for stealing packages from my front porch. How can I find out who actually did this? Will the IRS even tell me so that I can file charges, even if it wasn't my mother? [link] [comments] |
[IL] Landlord told me yesterday 2/26 to be out by 3/5 for renovations, do I have to leave? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:15 AM PST I have a signed year-long lease in Illinois with no special clauses in the lease that from what I can tell pertain to this situation. These renovations are non-emergency and would cause me to have to move out of my apartment in the middle of the school year. I've tried looking my situation up and contacting my local tenant union but I was wondering what rights I have, and if I have to move out at all. Thank you for any and all help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:41 AM PST I was informed yesterday during a class if an employer asks about you have PTSD/TBI or any other mental illness, it could lead to a lawsuit or the interviewer being fired.I would like to know exactly where this rule is stated so if such event does happen to me, i know where i can refer to instead of looking like an idiot. Thank you all in advance Edit: this is more for seeing a position that is not affected by PTSD or potential refusal for hire. Also State of Ohio. Im in the Air Force but being its the military, you can assume why they see about asking. [link] [comments] |
How should I be compensated if company phone lines are forwarded to me and I must answer them Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:45 AM PST I work for a medium size company in NC that provides after hour emergency services and all of the company phone lines are forwarded to my cell phone at the end of the business day and on weekends. I must answer the phone when calls come in no matter the time of day. I have been reprimanded in the past for missing phone calls at 2am and told that no matter what, the phone must be be answered, even if if the bathroom, sleeping, eating out with family, etc... Is this considered on call and on the clock? Clock in and out each time I receive a call? or something in between. I am paid hourly and I do want to be fair with my employer but also compensated fairly. [link] [comments] |
Can I run IR lights on my car? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 04:42 AM PST Eugene, Oregon, USA I'm building a HUD system in my car, one feature is that it has cameras (2 side, 1 front, 1 rear) always recording, with screens showing the image in real time while the car is running. The idea is that I will use infrared capable cameras as well as infrared illuminators (basically just fancy lights that only put out light in the IR spectrum) so that 24/7 my cameras will have [almost] full visibility. There are so many rules about what kind of visible light is and isn't allowed on a motor vehicle, but I've found nothing talking about light in the IR spectrum. I'm aware that IR lights can show a very dim red light, meaning that can legally only face backwards. Aside from that though, can I use IR illuminators without breaking the law? The reason it matters even though humans can't see the lights, is because police cars have cameras which are pretty much all IR compatible, so they'd definitely be visible to their in-car monitor if it's being used. So can I legally use Infrared Illuminators on my car? [link] [comments] |
TN - Gum Graft gone wrong, should I cut contact with doctor? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:27 AM PST Long story short, I had a gum graft done a few weeks back. I guess the surgical sites weren't separated properly because my lip is now fused to my gums. Is there any risks in me negotiating with the doctor to fix this? Or am I setting myself up for trouble if there was any negligence / malpractice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 10:57 AM PST I live in CT and have 2 Maine coons (if I could use pics for this post i'd give the cat tax) and I bought them in Maine in October 2020 from a breeder. We were promised papers proving they're purebred upon picking them up and never received them. I keep calling and asking where they are but always some excuse. My thought process is that I bought them purely because I wanted this particular breed. If I have no paperwork proving they're Maine coons how am I to know? Would I be able to sue for my $2800 back? If she's in a different state how would it work? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:18 PM PST Sorry if my flair is wrong, I wasn't sure if this question would fit in the others. I know pepper spray cannot be shipped to NY and you can only buy it in person from a licensed firearms dealer but would I be able to buy it in a different state and drive back to NY with it? There aren't hunting stores near me at all and it'd be easier for me to order from Amazon and ship to a state where it's legal and then bring it back. Would I get in trouble for this? Posted: 27 Feb 2021 02:17 PM PST As described above I'm setting up to move to another state for a new job that's been offered to me, but I don't know if I can pay up child support during that moving phase. I tried to get help from the courthouse where my divorce was processed and the form they directed me to required information from my new employer, but I've not officially been hired yet and I won't be until after I'm already out there. By the time I receive that information I won't have need for the postponement. I talked with the caretaker of my child and they told me I could hold off paying child support until I'm able to pay it back, and anything unpaid would just be taken from my taxes during the next filing period. I'm not familiar with law in that regard, so is that information accurate? I don't want to end up arrested or called to a courthouse for avoiding payments I can't currently make. I don't know if the courts track child support payments and would notice the lack thereof, or if legal action would only be taken if they reported the stop in payments. I know child support laws vary by state so the state is Missouri, hope I've provided enough information. Any help would be appreciated [link] [comments] |

Uber’s charging me for a ride that doesn’t exist Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:08 AM PST Sorry for the broken English, it's not my first language. I'm currently living in Brazil. Since last week there has been a red banner on my Uber account telling me I need to pay R$129.36, regarding an alleged ride from November 13, 2020 to 10:12 a.m. that was not paid. But this ride never happened. I've already checked my rider history and I only did 3 rides in November (1 in the 8th and 2 in 15th), and I didn't order anything on Uber Eats. When I enter the Uber website on my computer, a banner appears telling me the same thing and when I click on it, a screen with more information about the ride appears but it doesn't include where was it from, what was the destination, or a map. And when I click to download the receipt, the site crashes. A mess. Then I messaged them in the app in the help tab and went to see what's up, right? That was Monday. And to this day they're still playing dumb, saying that I'm supposed to pass my credit card info so they can refund me ... but the ride hasn't been paid. Because it didn't happen! I'm just warning them that they have an undue charge to my account and if it's not removed I can't use the service. I tried to call them, but the numbers are useless. Their website is no good and their Twitter sent me to a page of the site that I've read a thousand times. They take an average of 2 days to reply to my messages from the app. I've already opened a complaint at consumidor.gov.br but I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? TL;DR: Uber is charging me R$130 for a ride that does not exist and play dumb when I ask them to explain and remove. What do I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:51 AM PST This is in California. I completed the release of liability days after the sale back in October. I have copies of the Bill of sale and his signature on the title. He apparently abandoned the car, because I received a letter from the DMV that it's been sitting in storage incurring fees of $60 a day since January and it will be sold at the end of March. This paperwork says I may be responsible for these fees which will add up to $3600 by the time it sells. Am I totally screwed since this guy never went to the dmv?? [link] [comments] |
I think my job is cutting my hours because I failed a sexual harassment report. Posted: 26 Feb 2021 09:30 PM PST Edit to say I live in alberta canada. I also can't drop this job, covid is really bad in my area and I get paid a little more than minimum wage. So long story I was being sexually harrassed at my job. I work retail at a hardware store. I (20F) was being harrassed by Bill (fake name 55M) for quite some time. From spanking to name calling. I finally had enough when he put his hand down my shirt. I've made post here before and what I should do. I've reached out to a social worker and they're helping get in touch with the right people. But my issue comes from my lack of hours. I've changed my availability to be basically 24/7. But recently I broke down because Bill wouldn't leave me alone. All I asked was for him to not look at me, dont talk to me, no interactions at all. They said it was reasonable considering our jobs had no reason for us to interact with each other. I was on my day off shipping for some supplies when he started bothering me. I broke down to a manager and he said he'll talk to HR again and HR will reach out to me in the next few days. It's been 2 weeks with no word from her. She doesnt talk to me. Has very cold interactions. It's hard. I don't have the energy to chase her down anymore. I got my next few weeks schedules and it sucks hard. I went from 20+ hours to 8 or 12 hours. I dropped out of school to work a little more because my boyfriend can't work and we are waiting for E.I. I don't want to say my hours were cut because I blew the whistle. But after I complained they cut my hours drastically. I'm freaking out. I don't qualify for welfare. I feel like work is pushing me to quit. I hate it. I love my job. I live most of the people I work with. What have I done to deserve this. Do you think my hours are tied with my harrassment report. Bill has been with them for 10+ years and I've only been there for 1.5 years. Should I go to head office and go to the government? [link] [comments] |
I gave my 30 day notice, do I have to pay rent after the notice expires? (North Carolina) Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:00 AM PST I'll start off by saying I'm part of a military family. I'm a veteran and my spouse just deployed mid this month. We gave notice to vacate in January 1st but didn't fill out the "required paper" so on February first We did that and I paid for the month of February. The lease doesn't expire until August but we weren't anticipating a deployment. When I went to do that, they said "you'll have to pay for the months you aren't in the house until we fill it" we moved out in early January and I paid the month of February, but it's coming to a close. Me and my husband were in the same unit in the military but I got out, and that unit is constantly rotating people into the deploying unit and rotating them back. Since they do that, they don't give actual deployment orders, they just give everyone a By Direction paper that says "so and so is being deployed attached to x unit from this date to this date. If you have any questions, contact GySgt X." GySgt X said it doubles as a By Direction AND orders. They don't like that, wouldn't contact GySgt X to get an explanation themselves and told me to do it. But they didn't like the answers I gave them about it because they've "been in the business for years and have never seen anything like that." I know they think I'm faking it and I wish I wasn't because then I wouldn't be dealing with this at all and I'd have my husband home. Context aside, my real question is can they make me pay for the remaining months the house is filled? Or since I gave the appropriate notice and have that paper am I safe? [link] [comments] |
