Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Are there circumstances where it's ok to disclose FIRE to your manager?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 05:01 AM PST

My situation is that I'm probably ready to FIRE in 5-10 years, but on further consideration I'm thinking it would be healthy to consult part time with significantly less hours or long breaks instead of FIRE'ing completely.

I do tend to job hop for higher income and experiences. In the initial interview when they ask you "where do you see yourself in 10 years" I obviously keep quiet and tell management what they want to hear. However as you're more comfortable around your team and manager, and closer to FIRE'ing I'm wondering if there's any drawbacks to disclosing your plan a year or two before you hit "the number"? eg. to have the company consider an adjusted work schedule for your future.

Or in the case of when you leave the company, would it be acceptable to disclose your plan so that they know in the future you're open to consulting part time? Part of being an independent contractor is that you have to find your own work and word of mouth from people who have worked with you in the past goes a long way. But I also wouldn't want to be taking on work that's actually a full time commitment.

The above also of course assumes your own judgement of the people around you, if they're the jealous type, and if you're a high enough performer to make those suggestions.

    Thoughts?
