Hired a moving company to move one bedroom plus additional boxes to a 2 bedroom apartment. A man who I thought was the owner quoted a rate and a 3 hour maximum to move. Midway though moving things into my new apartment the 2 movers stop and ask me to sign the move out portion of the contract and asked me to pay cash for double what was initially quoted.

I refused as they hadn't finished the job and the price was double. The 2 movers leave go to the truck, lock half my belongings in the moving truck, lock themselves in the cab of the truck and refuse to talk. The owner is yelling at me is verbally harassing, demanding double. I ask to negotiate. Owner repeatedly calls along with his wife and he is yelling and threatening to call the police. I offered to pay the price that was initially quoted and $150 more for them to finish the job. The owner ends up calling the police for no other valid reason other than to intimidate and bully. Police officer is calling. Moving company owner is calling. Police say that type of moving scam happens all the time and I should take them to small claims. I finally Venmo the owner what he wants as they were threatening to take the rest of my belongings which included my beds to storage.

They then unload everything into the parking garage and leave. They didn't finish the job in moving my belongings to the actual apartment listed on the contract. I ended up moving the rest myself and injured my back in the process. I never did sign the 'move out' portion of the contract. The movers did damage furniture they moved into the unit.

I do have pictures of the property the left in the parking garage of the apartment building as well as the damage to furniture.

Not sure what my next course of action should be so these vultures are held accountable and don't what others to experience the same. Do I have a chance in small claims? Do I have options or should I walk away

    Thank you.

Edited: I reported this to BBB, FMCSA, BCA, Colorado Attorney General, Venmo, and to the company (2movers) who referred them. Also left reviews where ever I could. Realized that the pictures they are using online are not their own -they are using other mover photos and even are using a fake 'A+' BBB rating as their own. The owner and his wife wrote their own 5 star reviews as well. 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

Male in abusive relationship need advice

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:16 AM PST

I'm a 25 yr old male living in Canada, I've been in an abusive relationship for a year now, it's to the point I hardly see my family and am not aloud to have friends or social media. I have a dog, I've had her since before we started dating. About a year ago when covid started I became ill and had to leave my job and since then I am not aloud to get another job. Now a lot of people will say, just leave, your the man don't let her hit you etc. But unless you've been in an abusive relationship you just don't understand. Especially when that person has made you dependent on them. My mother tried to help but I also have a hard time telling her the extent of how bad it is. If anyone has any legitimate advice for me it would be greatly appreciated. Just not used to being in any situation like this. Thank you.

[VA] Fired from job for being a week behind on rent.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:08 AM PST

Hey everyone. First off let me start by saying that i worked for this company for 5+ years and was not giving performance warnings and always did my job.

So basically I am in the process of moving out of my apartment because with covid and everything else going on money has been tighter and I have sensed my finances becoming tighter.

My phone has not been working correctly and my landlord has been trying to get ahold of me to drop off the keys. (On a side note i had to predate my last months rent check 1 week which my landlord was ok with.) He ended up calling my employer which was on my rental application. I guess they ended up talking and my landlord told my boss that I was moving out and that i had to predate my last check. I was going to disclose i was moving after the final date, and i feel like my finances aren't allowed to be disclosed or used to be terminated from employment. After that conversation my boss called me and told me that I am fired because im not financially responsible.

Is there any legal action i can take? Am I at least able to file for unemployment? Any advice is appreciated this literally just happened.

If it affects anything I work in construction.

FL - My sister has a DUI and the court and her probation officer say all vehicles in our home must have interlock devices but my vehicle has hand controls and I don't want an interlock (she doesn't drive it anyways)

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:18 PM PST

My sister got convicted for DUI. As part of her sentence and her probation she only has a hardship license now and the court and her probation officer say all of the vehicles at our home must have interlock devices. I was born with spinal cord issues and I'm a paraplegic. I have a vehicle that has hand controls. My sister has not and will never drive my vehicle. I bought it myself and I'm the only one who has ever driven it. But her probation officer says I need an interlock anyways. I'm not the one who got a DUI. Also if the device wanted a sample while I'm operating the vehicle it would be impossible to do it because I need both my hands for driving.

Can her probation officer ban me from driving my own vehicle? He said if I use it without the interlock I am in legal trouble. The only option I was given was to get the interlock or sell it if I wanted to avoid legal trouble. I called his supervisor but they said the same thing.

(Wisconsin) Landlord directing us to vacate premises to film the apartment with our belongings inside it.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:29 AM PST

Hello r/legaladvice! We just received an email from the company that owns our apartment complex informing all tenants that in less than a week they will be having a team associated with a third-party company come in and access all of the apartments to film walkthrough videos for marketing purposes/use on their website. The email states that they will be filming all apartments regardless of whether or not they are being renewed this year, and they will be using high-definition 3D cameras that capture a lot of detail, so please put away anything 'personal'. They have already assigned a schedule and have instructed us to have a plan to VACATE the apartment for up to an hour and a half while they are there. They say that they will be wearing gloves and N95 masks while they are there and will be sanitizing surfaces, and that the hope is to increase the safety of all parties. Is this legal? The lease only says that they may enter with 12 hours notice.

It doesn't say anything about them having the right to kick us out of our own home in the middle of winter during a pandemic (where would we even go?) while strangers snoop around our apartment and FILM all of our personal items. It also doesn't say anything about them having the right to use images of our personal spaces for advertising. They never asked us permission they just informed us in this email basically saying that this is mandatory, and you're not allowed to be there while we walk through and film everything in your home. This feels like a massive invasion of privacy and also extremely sketchy. I personally think that they are pretty much trying to spy on us and see what we are doing in our apartments.

There are only two 'types' of apartments in our complex and the layout within each type is pretty much identical to the others so I don't see why they have a detailed 3D walkthrough of every single apartment. They also already have a highly detailed 3D walkthrough of an empty unit available to the public that I actually used before we moved in. We would like some advice on what we can do about this. We have already signed the lease for next year if that matters, and we are in Wisconsin.

(Wisconsin) My father in law's wife passed away last year, he is now being sent all her medical bills which are coming up to several thousands of dollars worth. Is he legally responsible for those bills?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 10:11 AM PST

I'm 99% sure that medical bills do not transfer to the SO when you die, but I just want to make sure. She died from complications due to diabetes, and she had no life insurance or anything like that, so he's struggling enough as it is.

Hearing impaired nurse let go because I can’t read lips. Worried about next job.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:28 PM PST

I was advised to post in this subreddit by members of r/nursing. I will try to be as anonymous as I can.

I am hard of hearing. I made it very clear to my manager and the HR who said it was "fine". I was optimistic until I started my orientation shifts. Some of the team members lost their patience with me and one nurse threw papers in my face. I reminded them that they need to be a bit patient (only takes 10 extra seconds) with me because I am a lipreader but it didn't go well.

The hospital finally let me go. I felt a burden has been lifted off my shoulders but I was saddened because it was an exciting opportunity to advance my career.

I know this is discrimination and I can file a complaint but I don't want to go down that route. I want to move on. I have another interview lined up with a different hospital and they also know my hearing loss but how do I stand up for myself this time?

Any suggestions? Thank you. I live in Alberta.

What gives someone ownership of a car? What paper work do I have to fill out?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:36 AM PST

My mom is kicking me out of the house and I don't have my own vehicle. I was going to go on a stretch and ask if I could keep her 4th car that she never uses and is older.

How should I go about this so if she says yes, I don't get arrested for "stealing a car". I've payed insurance on it before.

[Oregon] Allowing a neighbor to ride their horse in my pasture?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:10 AM PST

Hello, L.A. My wife and I recently inherited a house and a few acres in semi-rural, unincorporated Southern Oregon. Ownership is under a trust, and my wife is now the sole trustee. We have been visiting once a month or so, just to make sure everything stays neat and orderly. Although, we spend most of our time at our home four hours away. Our rural neighbors are very nice, and when my father-in-law passed, they were gracious and generous in their condolences and well-wishes.

When my FIL was alive, he offered a certain neighbor access to the pasture land on his property to trot their horses. We offered the same deal before he died but was in the hospital. The neighbors declined because my FIL used Roundup to control weeds, and the neighbors are very "granola-y hippie" and protective of their animals.

This morning, the neighbor called and asked if the offer was still on the table. They mentioned leasing the pasture, even offering to fix up our old fences. I won't accept the fence offer because I don't want to feel obligated in the future if the deal doesn't work out for us. My wife and I feel that as long as the horses don't damage the property, we don't mind allowing the horses there. In fact, it would be nice to have someone surveying the property to let us know if anything needs our attention.

Is this a sticky situation? Is there anything I can do to cover myself if something unforeseen happens to the horses (injury, disease, etc.)? Would a lease offer us some sort of legal protection?

Big thanks to everyone who responds.

Tl;dr: We have a rural property that we visit once a month. Neighbor wants to ride horses there. We're okay with it, but want to know if we need legal protection.

    Encroachment issue

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:10 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

    Location: south carolina, horry county.

I will try and keep this quick. My wife and I moved into a house that was built in 2005-2006. We bought it back in 2013, bank owned as the builder went under. The house right next door was also bought shortly after, and we never had a land survey done, nor did the neighbor that moved in a year or so later.

Now, our old neighbor has moved out and the new guy moved in back in the summer of 2020. He just had a land survey done in Feb 2021. The property line is fine, other than our driveway is over the property line, but we did not have any idea about it, it was just built that way and has been there from the start.

He has 2 property stakes and a "rope" going from the back of his property line all the way up to the front of his property and the rope is running over our driveway which makes it difficult to back out. We have backed out twice and hit the rope and it has not broke, but he is never home much for us to ask why he put it up. I understand he might want to put a fence up, but even if my driveway was NOT there, I would have a hard time backing up with that rope being there, or a fence.

My question is, considering the driveway was there since the start, what are my rights? I have lived here 8 years, and the driveway has been there for 15 or so. I just do not want this to be a problem. He is an older guy that looks like he has a lot of free time on his hands. My wife and I do not want to be troubled with nonsense. I have no problem letting him claim the driveway, but technically, we need the smart part of it to back our cars out of the driveway or swing/pull in to our garage, without it we would just be on the grass (if it was removed) and if he put a fence there, we would probably hit it at some point.

    Possible Retaliation Claim?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:47 PM PST

I recently worked for a certain louisiana chicken place, we love that chicken from here, in Central Texas, USA, and my GM had school kids, aged 16-17, working until 12 at night at times, even on school nights. I called corporate, made a complaint about that and a few workplace safety issues: i.e. asking a cook to empty grease in a 5 gallon bucket, then saying you shouldn't have done it that way after he splashed grease on his foot and got a decently bad burn. Afterwords, after a meeting with my GM and RM, my GM completely stopped scheduling me, claiming "labor issues", yet hired someone who was training when I went to get my last check from them. Is there a claim for retaliation there under the whistle-blowers act, or any that anything else can think of? Apologies for formatting, on Mobile.

Custody of godchildren in case of emergency

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:16 PM PST

So, my cousin who is older than me has two young kids ages 8 and 2. She has had some health concerns lately and we want to set it up so that if the worst comes to fruition, I would take custody of her kids. We live in Maine, I have been actively involved with both kids since they were born. I am 23, full time job w/ benefits, stable home, and no driving/criminal record at all. I live with my boyfriend who shares all those same attributes and wants the kids as well were something to happen. Both of the father's to the children are essentially unfit to care for a goldfish let alone a kid. I am a direct blood relative, but technically at this point have no legal right to their guardianship. What should our first step be? How do we make this as air tight as possible? Any piece of advice is helpful.

Got injured in a car accident this morning. Family thinks I should talk to an attorney

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:13 AM PST

I got reared ended this morning by someone on the freeway who wasn't paying attention to the traffic coming to a stop. Both vehicles totalled. When she hit me my airbags did not go off and my seatbelt didn't stop me from smashing my face on the steering wheel. I have a concussion, injured nose/face in general, and sprained wrist. My family thinks that my airbags should have gone off and my seat belt should have stopped me from hitting the steering wheel as hard as it did. They think I should talk to attorney because I could have been severly injured and was very lucky it was only a concussion. What do you think? Should I talk to an attorney? Portland, Oregon.

[Washington] Is it illegal to drive around a minor if other people in the vehicle are under the influence

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:18 PM PST

Me (18) and a few of my friends (21+) are planning on going to an arcade and then heading over to my place to watch a movie. I will be the designated driver and will not be drinking or smoking weed. I have a friend from high school (16) who wants to join us at the arcade and for the movie but there's concern that since he's a minor, it might be an issue if he's in the vehicle with other people who are under the influence. My younger friend won't be under the influence at all. Nothing I saw in the RCW seem to mention anything about it but I might be looking in the wrong place so I don't know.

Any and all help would be appreciated!

Can the police search a room

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:52 PM PST

This is in AZ. My brother lives with his ex wife parents rent free and no contract. My brother is not well mentally and they have a big concern about his gun being in the house. They want to do a wellness check in him and they want the police to take the gun. We know he will lie about having a gun so is it possible for the police to search his room for it? Do they need my brother permission to search the room or just his ex in laws?

can my “employer” mandate me back to the office?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:56 PM PST

I am self-employed as a contracted case manager. My "employer" has taken it upon himself to "mandate" all workers back into the office starting next month. i've looked into it some & have seen some information floating around that because i am a nonemployee, that basically i can stay home & work from my home office because telemedicine calls are still permitted. is it reasonable to argue that because i am self-employed & can do my work from home, i do not have to follow this "mandate"? (i am not worried about being fired as i am one of the best employees they have on the team, all ego aside)

just looking for some help understanding law. do not need legal advice. i am in WV but employed in KY

What happens if a doctor gets taken to court?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:53 PM PST

Hi, I'm in med school and recently one of my classmates was talking about how no matter how much she is struggling with her mental health she won't go to therapy bc in the future if she gets sued lawyers can dig up that info and use it against her and make it look like she's unfit to practice.

I'm worried now because I've been in therapy for a while (re: some cool childhood trauma and my self-esteem lol) - do I need to be worried?

Also, can lawyers look up your grades from med school and use that against you, even if it was like 1 time you did poorly and have otherwise been fine in med school and residency? I have an exam coming up that people tend to fail more than any of our other ones so I'm a little worried... how much can lawyers actually dig up on you if you get sued?

sorry if these questions are really neurotic lol i'm just a nervous person

My mother was ghosted by the woman she was housekeeping for

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:52 PM PST

hello r/legaladvice reddit! i'm going to jump straight into explaining my mother's situation. in November of 2020, my mother began housekeeping for a woman. she was going in twice a week to clean this woman's house, and was being paid $70 to do so each time. on the 4th week, being December 3 of 2020, my mother went to the house to clean per usual. when my mother was finished that same day, she was told by the woman that she would pay her later on. up until this point, there was no issues with payment so my mother trusted this woman and went on her way. some days later, that woman sent my mom a text saying that she will no longer need her services. the woman also requested my mother's zelle via text to pay her the $70 she owed her. my mom provided her this information yet never received payment. now here we are, in February. my mother has tried to call this woman a few times to no avail. a few days before Christmas my mother sent this woman a text asking when she will be paid. no answer. my mother is extremely hard working and a single mother. she cleans homes for a living to put food on the table for her family, so obviously this is very upsetting to her. the woman has since ghosted my mother, with no further contact from her end. i recently sent the woman a friendly text message, identifying myself as my mother's daughter and inquiring about my mother's payment. no response. i have a feeling this woman has done this before. she's an interior designer living in an very affluent side of the city. i know for a fact that $70 is nothing to this woman but she simply wants to ignore my mother. my main questions are, what can we do about this? what is the best way to proceed? my mother spent all of december 3 cleaning at her house, only to have this lady ghost her over $70 measly dollars. any advice will help! thank ya'll so much in advance. (this is in Texas btw)

    Debt Collectors Calling Wrong Person

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:15 PM PST

I am in Alberta, Canada and am posting this on behalf of my husband who is not a Redditor.

Back in November, my husband got a call from a debt collection agency. We have confirmed this is part of an actual law firm. My husband was confused because to his knowledge, he had no outstanding debts (aside from our mortgage and his car which payments are always made on time). The woman on the phone refused to confirm anything with him other than it was for [insert credit card company] and she "has already sent out the paperwork". She refused to confirm where she sent it to. Also noted, my husband has never had a credit card with with this company. She ended the call by saying she would send it out again, but never said where. At this time, my husband refused to provide any information about himself to the woman on the phone.

He did not hear from her again until this week. We also did not get anything in the mail. The woman on the phone continued to be argumentative when my husband did not want to provide information. The only information she could provide to my husband was what is in his voicemail, his name and company he works for. He had a few calls with her throughout the day, and advised his HR what was going on as he is thinking this is a scam, HR advised him they would let him know if anyone calls. When he did speak to the lady on the phone, he agreed to confirm his birth year if she gave him the information she had. It was four years off. The lady then said she confirmed his DOB with his HR, which is not true.

My husband has since completed a credit check and his credit is in the 800s. He called the credit card company and they confirmed that they never had a file with him. He called the credit cards sister company and also confirmed that he has no credit card with them. My husband has a somewhat common name, so we are thinking it's someone with the same name and she just googled the name - since my husband is pretty well know in his industry, he shows up on Google.

This woman continues to call but refuses to meet my husband half way in any respect to confirming he is not who she thinks he is. What are his next steps?

    Adoption, Abandonment and Custody

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:04 PM PST

My mother adopted my 3 girls (currently 12, 13, and 15) in 2010, I signed my rights away through the court (Florida) She is legally considered their mother right now. I've consistently been in their life, and recently the 4 of them moved in with me. She just told me that she's moving out of state to go live with her husband and leaving the kids with me. She wants to give me power of attorney and $700 a month to care for them. She is not in the best of health, she can't walk. I honestly feel like when she leaves, she will not be back. Either by her own choice or her health. I tried to explain that I'm not comfortable with that situation unless she wants to give me full custody. She doesn't. And honestly, I believe the only reason is because she doesn't want to lose the check she receives for them. What are my legal rights here? If she leaves and doesn't return, can I file for abandonment? Because of my situation where I voluntarily gave up my rights, do I have any chance of getting them back from a judge? Thanks for any help.

    Dad’s Will

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:51 AM PST

Here I am again. I'm in Illinois and spoke with two different probate attorneys. One said my dad's wife must file his will within 30 days of his death (it's been two months now). Another attorney said it's not necessary if there are no heirs and his home/ property was jointly owned. That lawyer suggested I write her a letter to ask for a copy of the Will (as his daughter). This is all so frustrating, I don't know where to turn if lawyers are giving different answers. Any advice welcome.
