$210 off quarantine hobby (digital pet portrait paintings)

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:54 PM PST

I know it isn't a significant amount but still feels good! $145 has been donated between the humane society and another local charity. I've done 5 so far and have 4 more in the queue.

I got a $30 tablet and it was the best money I ever spent. I just did an Instagram post and posted on NextDoor (neighbourhood app). I spent a weekend learning photoshop tools (I do have prior experience) and it's been really fun.

Edit: Thank you to those who are asking, they are $35. Here are some examples: https://imgur.com/a/inWcVSI

Edit again: Wow I didn't expect requests to come in but thank you for the support! Due to the influx I'm going to be an ass and ask for $45 unless you've already messaged me or made a comment. They take several hours each so I'm just being cautious of my time. Thanks again!

What techniques have you found best for “quickly” building a niche email list?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:59 AM PST

So I'm gearing up to launch a kickstarter within the next year and I've got a small list that's grown from posts on Reddit, Instagram, and direct linking to my site.

While those are strong leads because they're directly related to my niche, it only amounts to a few hundred, and in order to run a successful Kickstarter I think I should start with a list of a few thousand direct leads.

I don't have a ton of time to build a content site (and in fact my niche is already pretty saturated as far as marketing content goes—so I wouldn't have anything new to offer).

If I was to direct some capital into paid adverts in IG and Facebook—how much spend should allot to try to garner, say 5000 usable emails/leads?

This is a fashion/accessories niche so maybe that would help clarify a bit.

Also what are some techniques you've found to be really good at building your list? I was thinking maybe setting up an affiliate site in my niche, and leveraging that into a blog—but I don't know for sure. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Small mailings: Any reason to prefer a direct mail shop over a local assistant?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:48 AM PST

I'm comparing hiring a local assistant who works from her own home, to a direct mail shop. The task is to print and mail some small campaigns related to real estate. EDDM doesn't apply here, I need targeted mailings.

Direct mail shops can pre-sort. Still, when mailing 1,000 pieces or less (real estate related), assistants appear to be cheaper.

    • I can mail 100+ letters for about $1.40/piece, 500+ for $0.76/piece from a shop
    • An assistant would cost $0.55 postage, maybe $0.05 materials (yellow letter "naked mailer"), and $10/hr or so for the assistant (Kentucky area).

Anyone try both? Are assistants a better value or am I missing something?

What was the beginning of your entrepreneurship journey?

How to keep track of your Network

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:45 AM PST

Being home over the holiday break really made me start to analyze all of my different networks from the last 25 years (I'm in my 30s now).

What are some ways to keep track of KEY people in our lives and across various social channels without having them get lost and buried in the social media clutter?

I noticed Facebook and insta and LinkedIn will show posts to users with more followers or that post more and I will miss out on my friends posts.

As I analyze my network with a goal to more regularly connect with these folks and engage with them what are are some ideas to keep track of everyone?

Ex of my network that I want to interact with more:

Elementary Pre School Prep High School Private University College Sorority (Alumni Chapters across US/ Intl) Individuals at Previous Companies I worked at Major cities I have lived in now (4) Sort people by industry (tech, VC, finance, entrepreneur, entertainment, real estate etc)

    What is stopping entrepreneurs?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 02:01 AM PST

Hi, everyone! Let's make this year our year!

Recently I was looking at my business and was trying to figure out what is that one thing I need to do to make more money in the next 3-6 months and the one thing I knew I need to do, but was procrastinating for a long time. So I would like to invite you to share the one thing that you are procrastinating on, and why do you think entrepreneurs have that glass ceiling where they know what to do, but just don't do it... ?

My website is done, now what the heck do I do?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:57 AM PST

Hello all! I have spent the last few months creating an informational website about medical and recreational cannabis. Cannatourism has really popped off in my area and I wanted to spotlight all of the dispensaries in the area and highlight our unique cannabis community. Our area is very touristy already for the beaches, breweries, and wineries; but no one is really pushing the cannabis aspect. The website has general information about marijuana use, blog posts, and a map and list of all of the dispensaries in the area. Now that the website is developed and functioning, what do I do next? How do I bring traffic to my site? How do I eventually monetize this site? Thanks in advance!

How to turn retail sales into more direct sales?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:49 AM PST

How to transition from retail space to direct sales in my local market

Hi, I'm helping a close friend expand her handmade goods business. She's an artist and has some good business sense (more than me to be honest), but alas I'm trying to offer her my creativity however I can!

Currently in the city we live in, her hand-casted and pigmented concrete planters are on the shelves of about 5-6 local retailers (plant shops and home goods boutiques), but she is giving a 50/50 split to these retailers. The inventory she provides to each store sells out within days after each delivery. One of these retailers has clearly stated they are not open to renegotiating the split.

She is starting to organically increase her direct sales without any marketing other than social media presence (local pickup only- no shipping- due to the weight of the materials) via her webstore.

She wants to make more money, and the 50/50 split with the retailers is starting to feel a little unnecessary. Volume can't be increased exponentially due to the artisan/handmade nature of the product. I want to help her grow her direct sales locally in our city (Phoenix, AZ), so she can keep 100% of the profits.

I'm guessing that starting to compile a mailing list would be a good place to start? How could we do that with the retail sales? If we can capture enough information about our retail customers, I'm thinking we could then do some really effective marketing locally to reach the similar demographics here.

We are both total newbies to this. I would greatly appreciate any book or blog recommendations, any practical advice, or any other subs I should cross post this to.

    Thank you!

My son is turning 5, and I want to instill the value of looking for ways to make money, do you guys have any suggestions?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:23 AM PST

Edit: if you're only reading here so that you can make some shitty comment about how he is only 5- I'm not forcing him to do anything, I'm just lookin* for opportunities.

So if all you have is "he's five!", then move on because you're not going to be productive.

We live in a townhouse complex with shared recycling, so every morning his mom takes him out and they have a look for return for deposit recyclables, and he has already made over $100, which combined with some Christmas money earned him a new/used iPad. He was previously using a slower hand me down.

So, I've been trying to instil the "work for reward" in him already.

He is still too young for neighborhood tasks like mowing lawns or gutter cleaning, but when he gets there I want to give him a "business loan" so that he can understand how that all works, with fixed overhead and depreciation and stuff, and hopefully even how to scale by sub-contracting.

I've thought about buying and selling things (retail to amazon or even from garage sales to Craigslist) but I think that's a little beyond him right now as well.

I'm thinking dog walking- (we are homeschooling him so he could take dogs out in the middle of the day) and mom can walk with him.

Any other ideas from the entrepreneur group?

Edit: I shouldn't be surprised at people reading like "hers five!" And insults to me as parent.

I have two responses to that: 1. when I was mowing the lawn twice per week I wish my parents had said: "hey, why don't you go knock on some doors? You're already out there with the mower, why not make an extra few bucks?"

And Maybe I would have and maybe I wouldn't but it was never suggested to me.

And, 2. He is enjoying collecting recyclables right now- it's like a game, only he makes real money. Do any of you ask your kid to take his dinner plate to the kitchen? Do your kids play games where they have to grind away to level up? What's the difference here?

Oh, and for good measure, 3. I'm talking about 15 minutes per day, and if you know anything about school- it's a daycare service, the actual learning takes less than an hour a day so it's not like he is hurting for free time at all.

Relationship content creator searching affiliate advice

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 04:51 AM PST

    Hello,

I'm a german content creator with a website that revolves around Dating, relationship and life advice. With my website I'm currently hitting 45-50k clicks per month (and I'm working hard to increase those numbers) and I'm searching for ways to monetize my website.

The keywords that I revolve my articles around do not have any buyer-intent and only revolve around answering peoples questions. But despite that I had the idea, that I could link amazon affiliate books in my articles by fulfilling the readers intent and answering their questions (for example a relationship question) and adding a small box in my articles giving a short introduction to a book that I want to advise people to buy so they could could read more about the specific topic I am writing about in my articles.

My question is: Do you think it is possible to make a decent amount of money that way? I would be more than happy, if I could manage to sell to 1% of my audience books that are related to the topics I am writing about. Do you think those numbers are too far fetched and unrealistic and should I expect to sell less books, given the fact that I don't attract people with buyer-intent?

My second question is: Do any of you have any other ideas how to monetize a website like mine (except for Adsense money and similar networks) or do you think I could achieve my goal selling books?

Would be more than happy to hear your advice/ideas.

    Thanks in advance!

Innovative Gaming StartUp is looking for Investors / Partners

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:47 AM PST

    Hello,

I am founder of the innovative Gaming StartUp which has huge Social and MentalHealth applications strong market validation and we are looking for Investors / Partners.

According to our own resesrches, scientific researches and WHO: +50% of online multiplayer gamers are more than often depressed & lonely, while +85% would like to have more true friends for haning out online and playing together.

Anonimity, cyberbulling and toxicitiy in Gaming are huge and that's the main reason why it is extremly hard for Gamers to find frineds online.

I have more than 20 years of experience as Gamer and that's why I have decided to build the app called Gaming Panda.

Our app helps online multiplayer gamers to find true friends for hanging out online and playing together based on their personal preferences. Firstly we will focus on League of Legends community, pretty soon we will include other games in our app as well (Fortnite, PubG, CS:Go, Dota...).

Our Application will be available for Andorid & iOS and will be launched in next 30 days. We will have small but very smart & professional marketing campaign.

We are seeking for Investors / Partners mainly because we do not have enough capital for Marketing, while in the same time we can maintain the whole app completely alone.

We are based in Zagreb, Croatia. We have background in Business & IT Development.

Let's discuss in Comments or in DM :) if you would like to track our success?

Balloon seller side hustle to avoid exorbitant retail prices

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:55 AM PST

About a year ago it was my brother in-laws 30th. My wife was in charge of decorations and found these beautiful balloon selling for about £8-£10 a piece. She wanted to spend about £200. This seemed a huge amount of money so we hunted for the original manufacturer, spent the £200 with them and ended up with 600 balloon. Three weeks later we'd sold the lot (via Amazon, eBay and Etsy) and recycled the profits into more stock.

Fast forward over a year and we've set up our own website and across all platforms sold almost 13,000 last year and made about £17k profit.

The problem: Currently we have somewhere between 10-20 orders per day. Our average order value is £8-£12 (depends on the season eg Xmas is higher). We all work full time jobs and it's becoming cumbersome to pick, pack and dispatch all the packages ourselves (though it's obviously very profitable). We got quotes from warehouses but they would essentially result in us breaking even until we tripled the daily orders. So...

How can we get over this hurdle? How do we scale whilst holding down full time jobs?

Business idea but no idea how to create...

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:09 PM PST

I have a legitimate business idea but have no idea how to create it.

It heavily involves technology and I don't really know how to create the product.

Is this where everyone tells me I just have to teach myself how to create my product, or is there a way for my idea to be just as valuable as the person creating/developing it??

Basically what I'm asking is if/when anyone has an idea that they don't know how to make themselves, do they just have to figure it out themselves or is there a way to protect my idea while having someone else do the development...

    Does that make sense?

Should I go for a job or build my own business?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:52 AM PST

    Hello Entrepreneur community.

I have been learning a lot from the community's questions and answers for the best few months that I have been here. So thank you.

I have been practicing design for more than 3 years now, and I have worked with some clients but the work is very slow and jot sustainable -The last client I had was 4 months ago.

So currently I'm thinking of two things

One: is to start cold emailing potential clients and give them some form of free value and I hopefully this way I get some new clients.

Two: is to build my resume and start looking for a jobe as a graphic designer.

I'm considering the second option because I think that I need some experience in the field.

So what should I do? Thank you in advance 🖤🖤

Does this sound like a typical web dev company?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:46 PM PST

I have a web dev start up that builds single page applications for small businesses. If you don't know what a SPA is, well a big percentage of mid sized companies have a SPA because they are faster than normal websites, they're also easier for programmers in the long run, and scale up more easily than normal websites.

Well my whole business plan revolves around how to bring expensive SPA websites, which are objectively better than traditional websites for a lot of use cases, to small businesses. Covid made me rethink my whole system and what I came up with is a SaaS like pricing model. So instead of small businesses that can barely afford a normal website having to pay thousands upfront for one, like a lot of my competitors, they pay a couple hundred a month and that will include building the website and maintaining it.

Basically I make less in the short term, but a lot more small businesses will be able to afford my service. I definitely don't think I'm creating some breaking new business plan, but I'm excited about being able to bring higher end custom websites to small businesses and make them actually affordable.

Made $135k my first year - What's next?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:26 PM PST

About 30k Net with an asset worth $12k (total is 30% net). Majority of my expenses is the cost of drivers (I run a logistic and distribution company). I am the only employee and I grew it by cold calling companies. I'm partnered with a competitor to subcontract, allowing me to scale rapidly.

Thinking of hiring an assistant, somewhat someone who can do what I do to delegate the operations and account managing tasks while I focus on sales. Today, most of my time is spent running the business, not getting new clients.

I'll be calling bigger leads, potentially closing clients bringing $5k to $40k per month each (my clients are under contracts and give me work almost every day).

What revenue could I aim for this year? Also, how much of that 30k would you invest back in hires? Monthly profit is about $3k.

Let's all strive together, thank you for your help!

    How to create a prototype

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:46 PM PST

Hi. I have a product in mind I would like to create (something you can squeeze) however, I've never created a prototype. Who do I reach out to? How do I know what materials to use (or would I ask the prototyper what materials is best?). How do I protect my idea so that it's not stolen (NDA/Provisional Patent). If I do an NDA, where do I draft one up? If I do decide to use Alibaba to create the prototype, how do I find someone on there? Sorry for the amount of questions! Thank you everyone!!
