Well I finally hit that wall small business

Well I finally hit that wall

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 08:38 PM PST

My Small Business has been sucessful by my terms:

I went full time once for a year. I made it, but it was a lot of stress.

Picked up another W2 Job a few years ago that is non-strenous and is very flexible in case I run to significant demands from my business. Up to this point my W2 compensation package was equal to my profits running my business. Currently, I am outpacing my compensation package with my profits.

We are running out of room at our current location (Large residential out building). Most importantly I am running out of time to complete all my business demands. I can do a few small tweaks to squeeze another 60min of productivity out of my day and get a little more space but I am considering purchasing or leasing an industrial condo zoned to my business.

I am also considering farming alot of work out that I currently do in exhange for no labor cost, but less proft.

An employee would be great but not yet. The additional costs are not worth it yet.

How did you make it over the wall of too big to run on the side, and too small to go full time 100%?

Currently if our market or cusotmer base takes a turn we can ride it out and absorb the hit due to low overhead. If we lease/purchase it will be harder.

    Azlo Getting Shut Down

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:31 AM PST

Just received an email that Azlo is getting shut down by BBVA. No dates or additonal info given.

What's a like small business account with good Stripe and Paypal intergration? Or just a good account in general?

Update: I heard back from them after an email asking for details. This was the reply:

"We're still working to understand exactly how this process will take place, and we're sorry that we don't have more to share at this time. That said, please rest assured that your account and experience will not be immediately impacted. We are still working out the timeline details with BBVA USA, but we expect this to be months, not weeks, and we will work with you as we learn how our closure will unfold.

We greatly appreciate your patience and please know that we're very sad about this; helping small businesses and entrepreneurs survive and thrive has brought us nothing but joy and fulfillment and we wish we could continue.

I'd like to learn about getting clientele with 0 momentum.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

I'm broke due to this pandemic. Like lost everything broke. I have enough to get a bucket, a ladder, a scooper, a stabilizer, and a hose from Lowe's as I can return these items if I don't get a client. I want to go completely into Cleaning Gutters this late past fall which I feel is stupid but it's either this or Window Cleaning at my budget and I'll probably do both. Is just having determination and going door to door enough to land a client or do I need to use more money to make post cards to close with people. My issue is that I would be doing this to begin without insurance and I have no clue how to actually get someone to say "Yes, clean my gutters". I'm not necessarily afraid of going door to door, it's more of me not knowing how to get any sort of momentum going when it comes to getting clients to keep me busy with work. Any tips are appreciated.

Owning two separate businesses while using the same phone number.

I am thinking about starting up a different LLC than I already have now. I have a car detailing business and use my cell phone. How would I go about starting up the new business using my cell? Or would I need a new phone or number?

Percentage of gross sales additional rent

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 12:55 AM PST

Anyone sign a lease where you pay base rent plus percentage of gross sales as additional rent? Curious if there's a standard % or what others is. Also trying to figure out the idea of a breakpoint. When I search this topic a lot of articles talk about a breakpoint where the percentage of sales rent kicks in at a certain number of sales. Do you have this breakpoint in your lease?

    California SB Relief grant help

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:07 PM PST

Could anyone help me understand a question regarding asking about how many full time/part time employees as well as how it might affect my pua benefits. Are they asking for the number of employyes before the pandemic and then asking for an update as to how many we retained after the pandemic? Also, will applying for this grant affect my pua benefits?

Azlo closing down - anyone else get the email?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:37 AM PST

No date yet, but expected due to Simple and Azlo being part of PNC's acquisition of BBVA, who backed both.

I had long moved away from Azlo (for business) and Simple (for personal) due to multiple frustrations; accounts open but with no money. But it got me thinking.

I'm in Nevada, many banks don't operate here, BBVA being one and I doubt PNC does either.

With Simple, customers were told their accounts would just go to BBVA, but BBVA won't do accounts in states it doesn't have a presence in.

Azlo was treated as the "bank" which got around this. PNC doesn't seem interested in online banking without branches, and instead prefers to have people infect others by walking into a Branch for basic non-cash transactions.

My question: did anyone else who uses Azlo get the email, and if so, what state are you in?

How I Made Explanatory Video for my Sass in 16 Hours (for FREE+from SCRATCH+being NOOB)

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:19 AM PST

tl;dr = Use DaVinci Resolve 16 with templates & here's my final video

    Originally Published At aayush4vedi.com

And that's why I love building Saas. Being a full-time Backend Engineer, there was no chance of me attempting to make a state-of-the-art animated video synced to the beats. Ever!

Now coming to the "How" part in the title, here's how I did(and hopefully it can help you too):

    Explanatory Video Formats

    • For an explanatory video, there are multiple options. Easiest is to sit in front of your camera and speak or record your screen with voiceover. No fancy editors are required for it.
    • Another widely used template is that of Hand Drawn animations. There are many free/paid tools available for this.
    • What I did: Even though time crunch is there for solopreneurs, but I wanted my video to come out as cool(according to the taste developed after hundreds of hours spending on YouTube). So I decided not to go with either of these two options & do everything from scratch, as simple as possible; but the result should look as if it's been made by some professional video-editors team.😎

    Which Video Editor to Pick?

    • A few google/Reddit searches will tell you that Adobe AfterEffects is the way to go if you need a video editor to make your video as a function of your imagination.
    • All those android/iOS apps out there are only good for video/vlog editing & basic effects. Not here.
    • I've used AfterEffects once in college(for basic voiceover syncing) & remember it was free to use for students. Currently, they offer just one week trial period with mandatory billing information on signup. I tried with my college email too, but alas freebies have been revoked.
    • I didn't want to pay for something which I'll rarely use, so started looking for free alternatives and came across DaVinci Resolve. It offers the same features as AfterEffects but for free. God bless these people!

Just visit their site & hit download for your OS version & you're good to go for the next part.

    Edit & Animate Like Pro(when you're a noob)

    • Making videos like this is making PPT(power-point presentation), only cooler. The easiest way to save time is to use the templates in DaVinci. There are generous sites like (https://motionarray.com) & YouTubers who are giving so free templates for text-effect, transitions & effects.
    • You need to download them and paste them inside your DaVinci directory(varies as per your OS).
    • Now we need a script. I just jotted down the 'WHAT, WHY & HOW' of my Saas in bullet points. Just 10-12 frames are good enough for a short Explanatory video.
    • Next up was the playtime. Make your bullet points into screens & just go wild with your imagination while knitting them together. I played with everything: transitions, eye-popping texts, sliding text & whatnot.
    • If you've got a demo to attract people to your product, add it in the video with some context. I put mine inside the "Use Cases" section & put text-boxes over it to highlight the case. Even though, it took me a full night out to crap out a 1.5 min video; once you're into it- no is caffeinating required.

After you're done with the first cut, put it away for some time. Artworks need to marinate to become better 🎨. I opened my laptop the next morning to be able to see that some of my (earlier) favorite effects were not good. This was the time to change hat from VideoMaker to Editor. Cut out the unnecessary & weird parts to give your video the final cut.

Once you're happy with it, the last step is to add some background music.

    Adding Music in Sync

    • There are many free trendy audio tracks available online(without a watermark). Download the ones which go with your video's flow & mood.
    • NOTE: Using someone's audio may lead to copyright-strike on YouTube(but since it's easier to download than to learn piano & I'm not planning to earn from my video either, it's fine)
    • Load up your tracks into Davinci Resolve & inspect the waveforms to cut out those parts which you want to use.
    • Syncing video & audio can be a little tricky, but actually, there's no parameter to describe this job as good or bad. So as long as you're happy with it, it's good. Cheers.

When done, hit that render button & voilà! You're ready to showcase your video to the world.

You can see my video on my Sass's site-EUREKEA & youtube.

Let me know if you're on the same track & I'd love to help. Happy Hustling!

Azlo (online business banking) is closing - What are some good alternatives?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:35 AM PST

    Just got the email:

It is with regret that I share this news today: Our parent bank, BBVA US, has made the strategic decision to close Azlo. Transparency is incredibly important to me and the Azlo team, which is why we are sharing the news early.

Very sad because I have had a phenomenal experience with them up until now.

EDIT: Since I dont see it on their blog / social media, here is the full email

EDIT2: Saw another commenter mention that it could be related to the PNC acquisition:

The future of Simple was brought into question with the acquisition of its parent company. In November, BBVA sold its U.S. operations to Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank. The deal included two online assets: Simple and digital business bank Azlo.

I will probably be moving to Novo or Mercury because it looks like they have some integrations with my accounting software Xero

Azlo Bank Replacements? Mercury or BlueVine

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST

I just heard that Azlo Bank is closing, rumors are that they allowed PPP abuse and that BBVA (their parent bank) is closing them to avoid trouble, but it isn't clear.

I just started this company in May and hate to have to change banks, but it looks like I will.

I had originally looked at Novo (which had declined me for no reason and then had No(vo) customer service)

Radius Bank which charged me fees.

Axos - which looked to have an older style website interface.

Now I'm looking at Mercury or BlueVine. Any thoughts between the two? Any other suggestions?

How do I modernize a small nail salon?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST

Hi all. My mom purchased a nail salon in late 2019 with no prior knowledge of the business before. My mom is super old school and she's about 90% of the problem as to why her salon is not modernized. This is her first business, and I came to help her try to get it more structured for three months in the summer of 2020.

    Nail Salon Specs:

    • 8 female employees [three full-time]
    • Small town in Southern USA
    • 2,000 sq ft space
    • Uses Clover to ring up credit cards

    What I noticed:

    • There was no team communication, so I got everyone to use and communicate on Slack

    • Mom doesn't keep track of what she's profiting daily or her expenses, everything is written in notebooks scattered about, I just kind of let that slide since that's a huge project that I don't have time for right now. What are some expense systems I can try to introduce to her?

    • Employees are writing their services they've completed on physical paper tickets, that they attach the money they receive or printed credit card slips and put it in a locked box at the end of the day. I want to figure out how create digital tickets that employees can fill out or something. What do you all suggest?

    • I've implemented social media, albeit not a lot at the moment, but there's a website, FB page (not much traction), I still need to build her IG and I've added a QR code menu of services in the nail salon seats

The reason why things are slow for my mom to get everything implemented and done is because she is in her 50s, never owned a business, she has no knowledge of computers and she's doing this completely by herself. She is originally a barber but became a nail tech 4 years ago and decided to buy her current salon because the previous owners decided to sell it to her...

Any bit of info can help, I've already exhausted all of my searches on how to improve her salon on Google, YouTube, Reddit and social media.

    Thanks!!

Any good free/cheap order software that can import CSV's?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:28 PM PST

    Hello Guys,

I invested fully in my wife's sticker business a couple weeks ago. We were making small cash on etsy/redbubble, but those sites charge the crap out of you and people steal your artwork and sell it on the same site- anyway that's not the point.

We are actually doing pretty good so far, we already made enough profit to cover the domain/shop. But with a few new changes to the business, we have been busier than normal as we have been opened up to new customers(like more than I expected) and I was wondering if you know any free/cheap software that will easily import csv's of order data so we can easily calculate costs/profit?

I know I can do it via excel, my job revolves around SQL, so I'm very familiar. But I'm wondering, someone must know of a cheap/free software that performs these kind of functions, or at least something similar. It would help a lot.

Would you be interested in sharing your journey/successes/roadblocks?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:29 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've been following this community for quite some time and it's been great reading about you all's ventures.

For a while now I've been thinking that it would be nice to compile these experiences in audio format, with short interviews. It could be anything related to small/medium businesses. For example: How you launched your business, how you raised funds with investors, your marketing tips, how X business failed, etc. Heck, even physical and mental health while running a small business seems relevant.

When I was launching my own small business, these are the stories I was looking for. Even if it wasn't directly related to what I was launching, other people's stories were both insightful and inspiring.

Would anyone here be interested in sharing their story?

Small Bill Collection Strategies & Services?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:04 PM PST

I've got a long-standing overdue invoice ($475). The customer's contact number is a cell phone. It is my understanding that collection services can't call people on their cell phones and/or have other restrictions such as they can't knock on the person's door, etc.

So if I have the time to do my own collection, since I'm not a collection agency, don't I have more options on how I can attempt to reach with the customer?

If I'm at the end of my rope, is there consensus on who the leader(s) are for low-cost, effective bill collection services for small businesses (small amounts like under $1000) ?

As A Small Business, Google just killed my business this New Year

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:25 AM PST

Long story short, I started an online store selling snacks I made, it was my last resort for income after the pandemic began, and I have a four-year-old to take care of. I have no extra funds to open a retail store, especially during a pandemic, the online store is my only hope to sell my products and there is no way to get traffic without Google because they basically dominated the traffics on the internet.

New Year supposed to be a new beginning for me, but when I log into my ads account after one day of creating it, I see that my ads accounts have been suspended for suspicious payment activity (I used my own credit card), and my Merchant Center account is suspended for misrepresentation (my business is legally registered in New York), now basically there is no way for me to get new customers, not even to try my products because without ads there's basically no way to get the words out. My business is legally registered in New York and only sells the snack I made, I don't know how anything that I do violates their policy or misrepresented myself, and I use my own credit card for ads payment, this is just ridiculous and the worst time for a small business to encounter this problem. I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help with this problem, I'd already contacted google and file for review but through my research online, it seems that they provide zero support for advertisers, especially a small business like me who spends so little on their platform. All I got is an automated email response telling me to read their terms and policy. How can I violate any policies if I didn't even create any ads yet, and what can an online store selling basically candy bars violate any policies by Google? I am not the first one and definitely not the last one facing this issue, if this happened to me today, it could happen to your small business as well, Google has basically dominated the internet search and ads market if Google chooses to compete with any of us, it can beat us easily with its dominating internet power, imagine Google selling the same product as you and suspend you from competing with them, Amazon is already doing this with their house brand products such as Amazon Basic, imagine Google doing the same?

I built my site using Shopify (I won't put it here since it may be considered ads or self-promotion) and I have some verified customers and reviews, I really don't know how anything on my website can violate any of their policies, you can check the website here . I believe their AI or algorithm must mistakenly suspend me somehow, but not giving me a chance to explain or upload any documents to prove myself is just ridiculous.

It's been days and I am so frustrated right now. It's sad that it gets harder and harder for small businesses to survive. If the business can't survive, I know I won't survive the pandemic as well.

Is there a way to spread out a windfall income over multiple years to decrease tax margin?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 05:42 PM PST

If my business suddenly brings in a thousand times more income than it ever has one year, (e.g. through the sale of a very valuable asset) is there a way to spread out that income over multiple years so that it isn't taxed at the highest margin?

For example, I am thinking perhaps it could be reinvested so that it doesn't count as income, and then those reinvestments could be sold one at a time over many years.

Employee didn't read offer letter, now somewhat antagonistic about benefits -- should we part ways?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 07:02 AM PST

I run a middle market online business for the majority owner. We've recently started to scale and grow the team for the first time in a few years.

Our current policy is that benefits (healthcare, PTO, etc) begin 90 days after employment begins. This isn't my policy, and I doubt the owner would change it. It may be a bad policy, that's debatable.

We have a young, new employee that recently started, and he's being somewhat antagonistic about the healthcare not starting on day one. It clearly says that it starts after 90 days in the offer letter. He apparently didn't read that thoroughly, and he cancelled his existing healthcare as a result. He approached it with us like we were at fault and that there's no reason to not offer healthcare on day one, etc.

His tone on it (not acknowledging responsibility for not reading the offer letter; being somewhat antagonistic) seems like a potential red flag. The only thing is that he otherwise seems intelligent and competent and it took two months to hire for the position, and I hate to see it unfilled for another two months. Also, the 90 day benefits delay may be antiquated / not good policy for hiring good employees.

Is this a red flag that he's going to be a problem down the road? Should we give him a chance still?
