Is anyone's startup a social media web platform? If so would you care to share how you got people on your site and got people interested?

I am almost ready to launch a code sharing site (not github-like more like functional code snippets and full scripts) with all the features you would expect from a social media platform: notifications, private messages, tags, user profiles (much more) and of course the main theme.

I am the sole developer, devops person, marketer, web designer, etc. While the tech is my relative forte, getting people to come to the site is something I haven't thought of yet. I did research and I don't think I'll have trouble getting people to stay on the site (built with user interaction in mind), but getting their eyeballs there in the first place is a challenge. I am solving a problem that people have asked for (in the space that knows this area), but want to expand to the less involved market.

For example, the platform DEV.to appeals to not just to developers, but also people wanting to learn to develop and people generally interested in tech. I'd really like to know how they pulled that off.

There's a lot of startups, I was hoping anyone who is building a social platform or has built one would share some advice!

BONUS: how did you monetize yours?

    Website Advice

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:24 PM PST

So I just got my llc and ready to launch a website for a business I've had for about a year now

I'm decently computer savvy but I've never built a website

Would I be ok building my own site with WordPress/WooCommerce or should I just spend the money and have a basic one built for myself and hire a developer?

If so what would be a good price when hiring someone?

    Thanks

Do we sometimes neglect our bodies as entrepreneurs?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:38 AM PST

Hey, I struggled with this problem myself when I couldn't lose weight and I was wondering what problems entrepreneurs are facing when it comes to losing weight, staying in shape etc. Of course some are extremely fit but there are also people who could be in a better shape(no offense), if you are someone who would like to be in a better shape, what do you struggle with, lack of time, stress, bad habits?

    What exactly is a startup?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:22 PM PST

Honestly, browsed Youtube and found nothing that explained what exactly is a startup. No one explained what it takes to start a startup, what is a disruptive model, why startups are called startups because of uncertainty.

Hence, shot my own video for the same.

Here's the video for all the beginners who are unaware of what startup is and why not every new business is a startup.

What should I do - VC Incubator wants 50,1% Equity - 10% reserved for employees, Founders get 20% each

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:24 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was being approached by a VC that wants to work with me as an Entrepreneur in Residence.

I can use one of their ideas or pitch them mine. Its Ecommerce focused.

Everything sounds good - but they want 50% stake in the Company and give the founders (they mostly want 2) 20% each. Additionally they pay 36k € Year in Salary. Vesting Period is 1 year and Founders have blocking minority.

I currently work in consulting and want to transition into startup world again - but I am skeptical of the offer. Does anyone have an experience with this? I am not sure if its a good deal. 50% does sound very high, especially for a ecommerce startup.

If you could recommend any ressources that make me smarter, I would highly appreciate that too <3

    Cheers.

How do you drive 1st round of crowdfunders

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:23 PM PST

People prefer to invest in crowdfunding campaigns that are already probable winners. Any ideas, tips, etc of how to get the first 30-50% of your crowdfunding goal donated? Specifically in the pet product space.

Sure there's the build your social media, have a great pitch/launch video, have a clear message, have an email list and the other typical strategies. But what do you do when your target market aren't early adopters? How do you find and drive those early adopters to your crowdfunding campaign and buy into it?

My current target market aren't early adopters and would eagerly buy the product if they knew they could have it delivered this week. But we're a new company and need the funding from crowdfunding for our first run to be manufactured and have extra stock on hand for future orders.

Is there ever another round/series of investment in a company if IPO has already been issued?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:35 AM PST

Do big funding companies such as VisionFund (by SoftBank) invest in companies which have already issued an IPO? By this I don't mean buying shares of it at stock market, but by the new issuing of shares method (the one done before IPO). If they don't then how does the company raise fund again of if it needs?

What frameworks or heuristics will help me forecast the market size of collegiate esports programs in 10 years?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:36 PM PST

My college friends and I are a team of engineers who hope to start our first gaming business servicing collegiate programs. We know that collegiate esports is a small market right now but would like to assess the potential payoff if we were to stick with it for 10 years, i.e., Hudl(founded in 2006 now worth 430m).

How do you overcome the obsession of checking what your competitors are doing?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 06:47 PM PST

    Guys,

I think I have a small problem. When I start something, I can't resist myself from checking the competitors. I check them and then it gives me a lot of uncomfortability. Later on, thinking that they are or will better than my product, it slows me down.

How can I overcome that feeling? I know that having a couple of competitors might be also good as there is a market for the product.

How do you create a product when you see your competitiors are way ahead of you but you know that there is still market for your product if you XXXXXXXXXXXX

    Can you fill "XXXXXXXXXXXX" out?

    Thank you!
