Questions about tenant insurance coverage on personal property Insurance

Questions about tenant insurance coverage on personal property

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:48 PM PST

Hey, so - the sprinkler system went off in my apartment. I'm currently preparing a list of items that were damaged for my adjuster (about 20k or so worth by my account). In Canada if that matters

    A few questions I had:

    1. There were several items, like my TV and soundbar, that were sprayed with dirty sprinkler water but still turn on - should these items be included in my claim? I would argue that they should be replaced as the warranty is now void, there is possible internal damage that can't be seen, etc. Would it be OK to include them and argue my case, or would it be frowned upon by the insurance company?
    2. Typically, would the insurance company send someone to collect and dispose of the damaged items, or would that be up to me? My adjuster indicated that he could send in a restoration company to remove/store/dispose of things but it would come out of my personal property limit, but wouldn't the company want to see my damaged electronics and possibly sell them for salvage?
    3. For things like clothing and rugs that have been soaked in dirty sprinkler water - do I have any say in whether I simply replace the items or if they are sent for cleaning? What if there is no visible staining, but they smell bad?

Thanks for any insight you might be able to offer.

multi-vehicle accident during snow storm Ontario Canada

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:55 AM PST

20+~ car pileup during a white out that came out of nowhere. Ahead of us, a transport truck lost control, drove into median lane and pile up happened. We saw it, where able to stop fully. A few seconds later, looking into the rearview mirror, another transport truck behind the car behind us wasn't able to stop and rammed the car in our rear-end, that car continued, pushed the passenger door in and continued. pushed us lightly into vehicle ahead because we where both stopped at the time. We where close to exit, panicked seeing more transport and cars behind us, drove to the police station and filed report, took picutres and car was taken away. Insurance replaced the car. We weren't able to get the accident report for weeks and once all settled ,forgot all about it. There where no injuries on site, no ambulance etc and no one charged. Months later we got a letter saying one person was suing us for his damages and personal injuries etc. We got the accident report and it was all wrong, putting us at the start of the accident. Saying our car lost control and hit his car, pushing it into the transport truck that hit the median. The photos of the car, and a video at the police station clearly shows the rear end damage and passenger side door our car had and nothing on front end that would show that we had hit that car to push him into transport truck. We did a deposition with insurance company and gave pictures. It's been nearly 2 years. How does this usually play out? How is this even still going on when the pictures are so clear to the improbability of us being responsible for this?

    Help understanding Lemonade Renter's insurance?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 02:19 AM PST

Hi all, I've been a lurker for a while now and finally I want to ask a question:

I would like to know if you guys have had any issues with Lemonade Renter Insurance. It looks like the product is one of the cheapest and that their process is by far the easiest, but, have any of you had any bad experiences with the product? Do they actually pay the claims without many questions asked? Has anybody had any serious insurance need with Lemonade?

Thanks a lot in advanced everybody

    EDIT: I'm in NY City

Displaced because of fire for a week and adjuster only called us today, to schedule for another week from now

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:49 PM PST

Had a fire in our apartment Christmas Day. Apartment is deemed unable to be lived in and we are staying in a hotel. Insurance covers $1000 in displacement type fees, which we have already exceeded. Adjuster that needs to come for an inspection claimed to have called my husband and Dec. 30 at night to try and get into our unit, but my husband, I, and our complex have no missed calls. He finally calls Sunday, Jan 3rd at almost 9pm to schedule... for Monday January 11th. He said maybeeeee he can fit us in Wednesday. We said yes please!

We are still displaced because of this. The apartment complex won't do work on our unit until he comes out. What do I do? We are hemorrhaging all of our savings just paying for the hotel, we have already maxed out their $1000 for that and now all food and hotel is coming out of our savings. We can't cook either so we are eating cold food and microwave meals.

Can we hold insurance responsible for some of this cost? We have Assurance renters insurance. $5000 personal property which has been maxed out on our computers that were ruined, $1000 for displacement and costs associated with it (food, new toiletries, groceries etc).

Reopen Auto Vehicle Claim - California

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:35 PM PST

Original accident April 2018. Another vehicle ran red light and ran into my left front driver side by the wheel/headlight

Body shop fixed the vehicle damage, but advised there was some system/electrical issues with the door that the dealership may need to look at. They didn't explain further. I wanted to get out of there and everything looked good and was working, so I didn't think much of it. It wasn't until some time later in early 2019 I noticed my doors aren't locking remotely when prompted on the key fob. You hear it beep normally, you assume all doors are locked. Only my right passenger door locks remotely. The 3 other doors must be manually locked and doesn't respond to key fob. I don't know how a right front side accident causes a malfunction of both rear doors, along with the front left.

I was stupid for not questioning the body shop, noticing it sooner, and fixing it much sooner. I got it checked out at the dealer service center, and I will need new door lock actuators. Cost should be about $600 total if I need 3

My question now is: what are the chances I can get my auto claim reopened to pay for this? The deductible was paid previously. If I get something from the body shop confirming this issue due to the crash, are chances good? Chances if not and things I would need to get it approved? I read there is a 3 year statute of limitations to pursue a vehicle damage claim, so figure it is worth a try

    Thanks

Health insurance resets at beginning of the year?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST

I am having surgery in a few days and receive health insurance through my employer. I had all of the work up for my surgery back in November and because of that, I reached my out of pocket maximum for the year and had to pay $4000. Because of COVID, they were not able to schedule my surgery until a few days from now. I was just reviewing my plan and it says my coverage began on 1/1/2021. Does this mean that I am about to get screwed over and pay $4000 again? Is there any way to get around this? It seems very unfair that I have to pay another $4000 because they were not able to schedule me earlier. I don't see why I should have to pay double when if I had the surgery a few days ago it would be free.

    Employer administrative error

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST

I enrolled in healthcare benefits through my employer back in December. However, due to their site being down I had to call and elect benefits over phone. I reviewed the information today to get the new healthcare information and saw that the dental coverage was only for myself, I elected to have entire family covered. How screwed am I? Can this be fixed outside of open enrollment?

What are explanation of benefits for?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:21 AM PST

So every time me or my wife goes to see a doctor we get these explanation of benefits mailed to us by our insurance company. It's a lengthy 5 or 6 page document that clearly upfront says "THIS IS NOT A BILL." It seems Blue Cross does this but United Healthcare does not.

What would they be used for, and for what reasons would I need to save one and not just put it in the shredder as soon as I get it? In my experience if insurance is going to deny covering something, we won't even see a explanation of benefits in the first place, just a bill from the provider we have to fight the insurance company to get covered.

If I'm listed as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy, but I don't know what company the insurance is with, am I out of luck?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:27 PM PST

A friend listed me as a beneficiary, though possibly one of several. I assume the deceased's family will file a claim. Do I have to file a claim too? I'm so hesitant to bring up the subject because I'll seem greedy. The deceased lived in Massachusetts, and I live in Virginia.

Out of State Health Coverage with a Pre-Existing Condition?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:17 PM PST

I'm so glad I found this sub! I've got a tricky health insurance question that I'm hoping you lovely people could guide me on. I recognize that I made some insurance-related mistakes, but also don't want this to come off as some sob story. Here's the ugly deets:

My fiancé (38M) and I (27F) have been living together for 6 years and are registered domestic partners. I'm the main breadwinner for our household, especially now that the fiancé has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (read: expensive pre-existing condition). Thankfully he was able to start treatment right away with a daily pill (read: expensive prescription) prescribed by his neurologist.

Here's where it gets fun. In fall 2019, we moved from OH to IL, but decided to keep his MS care in OH because he was already established with a solid care team / treatment plan, and they only needed to see him 2x/year for an MRI (read: expensive test) and lab-work (read: less expensive tests). We didn't have any trouble with this plan for the first year in Illinois. My company's insurance covered him and everything he needed, including the out-of-state specialist provider.

Then in June 2020 I was laid off due to COVID and lost our health insurance. Okay, no big deal, the ACA and "special enrollment" exist. My projected income for the year was low enough to qualify for Medicaid (greaaat) instead of the Marketplace plans. At the time. I didn't realize that meant (outside of travel emergencies) any out-of-state providers would not be covered, including the prescriptions they write, and tests they order. I've also started freelancing full-time since then, so do not have employer insurance coverage available.

Because of this, we opted to just keep his MS care pretty hands off in 2020 (COVID meant we wouldn't be traveling anyway), got his important prescription covered by a sponsorship through the drug manufacturer, and had his primary care doc (in IL) write a new script for the other drug that his neurologist (in OH) had prescribed.

This seemed to work just fine until the fiancé had an MS flare-up in September 2020. Medicaid covered all the ER costs and everything no problem. Because of that flare, the Ohio neurologist called on Christmas Eve to talk about a more rigorous treatment plan. He wants to have him get an MRI and some labs done to make a decision. But if the OH neurologist orders an MRI and bloodwork, it won't be covered by IL Medicaid, even if the fiancé goes to an IL facility to have the tests done. And beyond the tests, MS treatments (like the bi-annual infusion he's suggesting) are pricey, and would need to be done at the OH facility.

So now I am looking for something that may not exist. I'm looking for some sort of secondary insurance that: * Covers pre-existing conditions * Allows out-of state specialists without a referral * Bonus points if I don't need a "qualifying life event" to sign up for it

Where would I look to find something like that? Are there other options I should consider in light of my situation?

    Thank you all!

Just had an ice storm in Illinois and a tree branch fell from my tree fell into my neighbors yard

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:16 PM PST

Hello not sure if this the right place for this. My neighbor claims that I am responsible for cleaning up tree branches that fell from my large tree that overhangs their yard. The tree is healthy and in good condition. Ice storm just too much. It's my understanding this is an act of God and I'm not responsible for cleanup or any repairs. What should I do?

Dental insurance did not cover service, so I had to pay more out of pocket. How do I proceed?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:39 PM PST

I have a $1500 annual limit through my dental insurance. Recently, I had to get fillings for some cavities. It was broken up into two appointments - the right side done one week, and the left side done the next week. I was quoted $155 for the first week and $90 for the second week by the dental office. I paid $155 the first week, but the second week I paid $468 out of pocket. I checked my insurance provider's explanation of benefits and it has the total "patient's responsibility" as $448...almost 200 less than what I actually paid. I still had about $500 of my annual limit available.

This is my first time having dental insurance and getting work done with it, so how do I proceed? Will the dental office catch this and send me a refund? Or do I need to contact the dental office and/or my insurance provider?

First received a debt collection notice, do not want to destroy credit history

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:33 PM PST

During covid-19 I could not pay my old auto insurance because they increased payment due in the middle of the policy. Now I have received a letter from Credit Collection Service stating that because of unpaid amount my account is placed to office of collection. Also, I have 30 days to respond to dispute its validity or portion of it otherwise the debt will be assumed as valid.

Also, when I log to CCS website with my file number there are options of numerous responses, one is with a headline "I had replacement Insurance", does it mean proving I had replacement insurance will invalidate my old insurance debt? In the last three months of the policy, possibly for which I am being charged for, had a new insurance at that time with a different provider.Any advices is highly appreciated. Location: Texas

Insurance company won’t compensate for theft

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

So I had a storage unit in Denver CO where I kept a few things for about two years. I broke up with my gf and picked up all of my stuff from her place in my truck, and had no where to live for the time being so I put most of it into a unit. I ended up taking the time to explore CO and the SW a bit, only to drive back to PA to visit my family and ended up staying there for a while. I left AZ and didn't know if I'd be staying in PA so I left my things in the unit in CO. I had a feeling I should grab my more expensive possessions, but didn't want to drive the whole way up to Denver.

I finally came back to retrieve my belongings and vacate my storage unit a few months ago, only to find my Mac mini and my PS4 missing. I had insurance through Xercor, and was covered under theft. I filed a police report as requested by them so they would review my case.

According to them, if there isn't any "evidence of break in" then they won't insure my losses. This is bs to me, since all they would need to do is pick the lock. I had a cylinder lock and after finding out my stuff was missing I look into it and they're apparently easy to pick. Also, the detective I spoke with told me there were multiple instances of theft from that same storage building not too long ago. He also said they had trouble with people living in units there, so clearly the place isn't managed very well. There are even cameras, so they could have checked to see that clearly someone who wasn't me walked up and the picked the lock of my unit.

Is there anything I could do? Thanks for any input.

Which insurance company would you recommend for OHV/ATV/UTV/Dirtbike rentals?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:33 AM PST

Hi all, so I have been renting out my atvs and dirtbikes from my home, however I have not had insurance yet alone know much about insurance. Ive always had the customer put a deductible. I only been looking at large companies like Progressive, All state, etc. so I am not sure if there is a "special" insurance company out there for small rental businesses like me.

Im mostly looking for coverage in case product is damaged or stolen. Im not interested in medical and all that. I have a pretty decent waiver that I worked with a lawyer on, but since I am expanding, think it might be time for one.

    Car insurance went up

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 06:29 AM PST

So my little brother was driving my car. He was T-bones coming through an intersection. His insurance got involved. The other guys insurance got involved. I was not in the car and my insurance never got involved. But my rates went up because my car was in an accident and on their policy even though I wasn't driving and they did not get involved in any of the claims. My insurance went up $60 a month. Does that seem right?

Does the owner of the vehicle have to have insurance on the car?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:56 AM PST

Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm a student and I am now getting into this world.

My parents will be moving to Korea this summer and I will be getting the car. The car's under my dad's name and I'm aware that we won't be able to have insurance in America since he will be out of the country. Does this mean that I will have to do a title transfer of the car moved to my name or will my dad still be able to have ownership of the car without having insurance?

    Thank you!!

    Facility vs Provider....

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:55 AM PST

    Hi there,

My new health plan went into effect 1/1/2021 so I am looking for a PCP. I am using the "Find a Doctor" tool on my health plan's website to ensure I am only looking at in-network providers, but every doctor that comes up is listed as NOT being a primary care provider. I think this may be because my health plan is based out of MI and I live in CA.

Since no individual doctors come up as PCPs, I searched around and found some healthcare practices (entire offices) come up as in network when I search, but when searching the individual doctors that actually work in the facility it yields no results... does listing the entire practice mean every provider that works there will be considered in network? Or should I keep searching?

    Home Owner Insurance claim

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:04 AM PST

We received compensation for damages that happened when a pipe leaked in our home from our home owners insurance company.

However there seems to have been a lack of communication with the company doing repairs to our ceiling, floors, etc.

For more context, the leak caused a portion of our ceiling to be removed, part of a wall needs to be replaced, and almost our entire downstairs flooring needs to be replaced. We paid the demo/construction company for their equipment rental and demolition job but we still have a decent sum that is supposed to go towards the new wall/floors. The original plan was to just have this construction company do everything but we've been having a hard time coordinating with them to keep the project going. What I'm really wondering is could we use the money from the claim to hire a different company for the walls and then do the flooring job ourselves? That way we could put any extra funds towards other home improvement projects. I'm not sure how this would work legally or if it would just generally be a bad idea based on others experiences.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

    Mentioning claims in a policy

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:11 AM PST

Hi, I'm a UK citizen 18M and am in my sencond year of driving. I've been looking around at quotes and Admiral was the cheapest at around £1100. The payment was blocked so I called them and they say because my Mum was in an accident that wasn't her fault and was in a different vehicle, as well as not affecting her NCD, my premium will go up to around £1650. Without her as a named driver the policy goes up to at least £2000. I don't specialise in actuarial sciences, but should I have to mention that when I'm on search engines?
