Creating a Company That Aligns With What You Love, REALLY??!!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:31 AM PST

Many people say you should find what you love doing or something that you would do for free anytime/anywhere, then build a business based on that.

I wanna tell you my story. I love riding my car, I love driving in the middle of the night, I love driving in the middle of the day, I take a joy ride on a daily basis and I love being in my car.

However, I tried making it for money (e.g. Uber) or racing, but the feeling is not the same. It still becomes a job and you lose the thing that makes it enjoyable. It becomes a duty and you are no longer able to decide when to do it and when not to do it.

Should we really create a business out of what we love and ruin our passion? Or should we find something that is comfortable to do and keep our passion for the spare time?

    What do you guys think?

How can I charge a "finder's fee" from competitors when I give them business?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:16 PM PST

I provide software services in a very niche market. I have built myself a name and brand recognition, and I receive a lot of client leads every day. I get more leads than I can handle so I have to reject a lot of projects.

A few of the other big players in my market don't get as many clients as I do, and they have often asked me to refer some of my clients to them. In the past I've done this free of charge, but I'm understanding now that I'm cutting down their advertising costs (I don't advertise myself - I get only organic leads) and bringing them a lot of revenue.

So I'd like to offer them a partnership where for every client I send them, I get a finder's fee. Each project is typically $10k-$20k. I think it's fair because I've worked very hard to get to this point where I get so many leads. There are several unknowns to me in how to approach this:

    • Is this a common thing to do?

    • Is this called a "finder's fee"? Is there a better term I could use when I offer this to them?

    • Is asking for 10% of their project total and 10% of ongoing support a fair price? Is it extremely low or extremely high?

    • Suppose we agree on 10%, how can I enforce this and know what the actual price of their contract is? Do I ask to remain on all email communications so that I now what their agreed price is, or do I ask for them to send me the signed contract once they reach a deal with the client, or do I just trust that they'll tell me the truth?

As A Small Business trying to survive the pandemic, Google and FB just killed my business this New Year.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 06:44 PM PST

Long story short, I believe some of the Redditors in this subreddit had seen my business Snowbits before, it was my last resort for income after the pandemic began. I have no extra funds to open a retail store, especially during a pandemic, the online store is my only hope to sell my products and there is no way to get traffic without FB/Instagram and Google because they basically dominated the traffics on the internet. I was doing alright with advertising on them, not making much but enough to pay for bills and that's about it.

Everything has changed today, yes, today, New Year, when I log into my accounts and see that my accounts have been disabled/suspended, now basically there is no way for me to get new customers, not even to try my products without advertising platforms. My business is legally registered in New York and only sells the snack I made, I don't know how anything that I do violates their policy or misrepresented myself, and I use my own credit card for ads payment, this is just ridiculous and the worst time for a small business to encounter this problem. I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help with this problem, I'd already contacted fb/gg and file for review but through my research online, it seems that they provide zero support for advertisers, especially a small business like me who spends so little on their platform.

This is my website https://snowbitssweet.com/ and I have verified customers and reviews, I really don't know how anything on my website can violate any of their policies. I've attached the screenshots of my accounts being suspended by Google and FB, did anyone got these problems before? I know Google has an office in Manhattan, and I wonder if there's any way I can go there and request any kind of support.

The only products I sell is a snack I make, a nougat-like treats with my own secret recipe and a marshmallow wrapped jujube dates with almond, I don't think there are similar sellers or if my products infringe any party's copyright or interest.

How do you turn an idea into a project without any engineering background?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST

I'm new to this sub and I want to know if it's possible to make a device (I have an idea but I'm a bit skeptical of posting it online) even though I don't have an engineering background.

I asked one of my entrepreneur friends and he told me this:
1_It's a really good idea, but I don't know how you could get that thing to work.
2_It would have to be cheap enough so that it could be sold to the general public. It would also have to be small enough so that it could fit anywhere.
3_It would have to be pretty easy to install so that I wouldn't have to hire extra staff to drive to the customers (similar to when you buy a router and some workers come to your house).

    My questions:
1)Do I ask as many engineering friends as I have to come up with how we could make something like this work?
2)Do I post the idea on an engineering sub on reddit and they give me some ideas?/Do I hire an engineer to help me build it?
3)Do I try to do this on my own?
4)Should I even be this skeptical about telling other people my idea?

Having a hard time on the open market as a translator

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:46 AM PST

    Hey!

Happy new year to you all! I hope every one of you is alright. I read about the 10 karma to post rule, but after extensive research, I still couldn't find out where to look up how much karma I have in this particular sub. I only know that my total is at 6.8k.

So I am a pretty successful freelance translator on a powerful platform. It took me a while to make a living off of it, but overall, my current rate is still only 1/5 of the lowest prices out on the open market. Therefore, I launched my company website in September. The thing is that I will have to start from scratch there. During my time on the platform, I got about 450 companies noted down among the ~3500 orders I completed. The thing is that I am not allowed to contact people outside of the platform, or to put it better, I am not allowed to ask my contact for contact information at all.

Also, about 95% of my clients are middlemen. Therefore, I am not directly working with the client at all. The client would hire an agency, who will hire someone who promises to work on it, while he acts as a middleman who hires a middle man who hires a middleman who employs me. I work for 1/10th of the price, while others benefit from it, having no idea how it works.

It works for me in my current situation, but I feel like I have better potential. My page seems to be on the second to third Google page right now, even with a little bit of SEO done. I sometimes think about contacting those firms and telling them that I ended up doing their translations and asking them if they want to continue working with me in the future for a lower rate like they are currently paying. Technically, I don't have any contract with the middleman not to contact the company. I can't trace if the company was delighted with my work in the end. I usually get a 5* review from the last middleman in the chain, and that's it. I don't know what happens back on the way to the actual client. In case the company wasn't satisfied, I feel kind of vulnerable. After all, they could sue me because they don't expect me to have their files.

Those contacts are the best chance to do my first steps on the open market and get some mouth-to-mouth publicity for my brand. But doing that would feel pretty risky.

I will also have to work under the GDPR of Europe if that changes anything. I would love to see my website get going since it will be a huge step forward in my career!

How would you choose a business name in 2021?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:56 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm currently brainstorming names for my business idea and could use some help now that my initial idea was already taken.

For starters I will only be targeting national customers (Swedish) but will scale internationally rather quickly as soon as I'm up and running.

My business is sports repair, more specifically hockey. But will/can also scale into floorball, padel, golf and other (preferably) stick/racket sports. What all these have in common are that they are made from composite materials. Even further down the road we can basically fix anything made from composite material, but that's another question.

I'm already thinking long-term, and I want a "basic" landing page with my business name, ie (wefixsports.com). (This was my initial idea, but domain was taken!)), and from the landing page you navigate to which category you want to enter (hockey, padel, golf, etc)(www.wefixsports/hockey, or www.hockey.wefixsports.com). I will then sell these repaired/fixed items on my own website. Another idea is to work with sport teams and directly repair their equipment. Both ideas will probably be incorporated.

I'm not sure whether I should use words like "composite/fix/sports" in my name or come up with a completely random name. I don't want to niche it down too specifically, as I want to scale my business further down the road.

I wish you a very best 2021, thanks!

Started a website for a side hustle but I’m not sure what the next step is?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:41 AM PST

Hello all. I started a website where people can submit resumes for review or they can have a resume re written or interviewing help services. I'm stuck now because I have the website up, I have some reviews on there but I have not yet started charging people. The website is through godaddy and in order to charge people I need to subscribe to godaddy for premium.

Should I set up an llc first? Is it okay to start charging people now without llc? Should I be worried for lawsuits? I'm just an average guy who went to college and learned how to put together a great resume and prepare for job interviews.

How to become the richest person in the world

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 04:53 PM PST

The ultimate goal of your business shouldn't be to make as much money as you can. It should be for you to win back the most valuable asset we have on this earth, your time.

You've already passed the first test - you quit your job, fired your boss, and decided to go out on your own. Great. However, this is just the beginning - staying in this role is essentially signing up for a job (again) except the only difference is, you created the job, and have way more responsibility than you did at your last job. (And, yes, more money...in some cases)

The next step is to free yourself. So, how do you do that? You create a system.

Don't let that word scare you, it's just a way to describe order in your business.

Let's narrow it down even further...

You, as the business owner, are responsible for a TON of tasks throughout your day.

If you were to add them all up, let's say there would be about 20.

Some business owners never create a system, so each day they are responsible for all 20 tasks.

Do all of those 20 tasks get done? No way

Do any of them get done to perfection? In most cases, no.

The only one of those tasks that usually gets done to perfection (Because it is required in order to get paid) is production.

Everything else gets put on the back-burner.

So the goal is - delegate as many tasks as you can to someone else.

No matter what it is. It could be as simple as making sure someone else picks up the paint in the morning.

And that's the secret. It's a constant game of delegation. The more tasks you delegate, the more free you become.

Now - if it were that easy, of course, everyone would do it. It's not just delegating the tasks, it's overseeing that those tasks get done to the standard of which you would of done them.

This is where management comes in, now, you delegate someone to over-see those tasks, and you check in with the manager.

Obviously, this is a pretty deep subject, but, it's a start if you're in a position where it seems impossible for you to free yourself, this perspective will help!

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:44 PM PST

    Hi Everyone,

I wanted to know if there are any fellow entrepreneurs who have ended up with sites / blogs that have way too much media slowing their site down.

I know there are a bunch of plugins to help with this, but how do you deal with this on your site? Do you outsource this? Do you do it yourself?

Not really looking for things like that, i have a family, im in school and i also work part time. Just trying to find something that can net me $600+ a month. Im very willing to work im just at a lost. Also, keep in mind im a felon, so somethings may not be available to me.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:07 PM PST

Anyone here with ADHD that has been able to think of an idea and make it happen? My biggest issue is finding the motivation to start and stay consistent with any startups. Currently I am trying to make Teespring sales but would like to branch and apply my current passion (financial education) as a business. I just can't for the life of me, begin a task and stay constant. I need immediate gratification (Lizard brain at its finest) but that isn't the case with a good business. Can anyone help me?

After wrapping up a few of pre-covid business projects in 2020, and failing to launch a facemask business because I couldn't find a reliable supplier, I've been on a break since fall and have saved $100k to invest in a new project in 2021. Where do you recommend I look into?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST

    My background

    1. I'm a college drop out who worked in marketing for a while (Twitter, Facebook campaigns) then I moved on to
    2. building apps for myself and others, so I have experience with project management especially for software and ecommerce sites. I have been involved in a dozen projects as PM and in others as business analyst or advisor in branding/visual identity/marketing.
    3. I have also experimented with crypto apps (as sponsor, with no success and not interested in trying again)

Where do you think should I be looking for opportunities for my next business? Hoping to do something cool in 2021.
