After a car accident that was my fault the other insurance wants more money from me

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST

I hit a car last year and my property damage liability was $5k which is the min required in California. The other car was totaled, and worth about $10k. Now the other insurance company wants another $5k from me. However, the letter I received is treating it like an uncollected debt, which is strange to me. Shouldn't they sue me first? Since I have no assets they wouldn't get anything but I thought that's how it's supposed to go.

Since I did what was required by law, and it sucks for them I did more damage than that, what is my true obligation here? Should I offer them a bit and see if they will close the claim? Or should I tell them to pound sand? Or should I get a lawyer?

Does it matter what answer I put on the GEICO caliper personality assessment?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:19 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

So I had a Indeed interview yesterday with a HR rep with GEICO for a customer service representative position in San Diego, CA. Today, she asked in an email that I complete a job application, which I did. After that, I was sent a caliper personality assessment to complete.

However, I am completely overthinking every single question to this assessment and I have no idea if it means anything or not. Should I lie to sound like a great worker, or should I tell the truth to show my true personality but end up not having a job?

For example, I put down that I am a pretty talkative person even though in reality I am very quiet most of the time, but can have small talk and decent conversation like anyone else. I just didn't know if talkative was part of the ideal candidate portfolio or they didn't care if I was quiet, just as long as I got work done.

Does any of this assessment stuff mean anything, or is this all just much ado about nothing?

    Thanks in advance.

Small Fender Bender with rental, But I have no insurance

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 11:48 PM PST

Long story short, I got into a very small fender bender with paint scuffs to both the vehicles. Rented through Turo the host doesn't want us to report it to Turo so they don't get their car delisted as well as for us to not have to pay a premium with making the claim through turo. She suggested for us to handle it independently.

The rock in a hard place is that I'm a guest driver under the renter, who is my buddy, he didn't pay for insurance through turo and I didn't know. I don't have auto insurance since I have never needed it in the city since I don't own a vehicle, I stupidly assumed Turo had their own rental coverage for renters that was already prepaid without actually looking into the reservation.

Currently, I had settled with the host of the rental which is over and done with, though the lady who I hit got an inflated estimate (as told to me by a few friends of mine in the auto industry) and seems to have reported a claim through turo, she doesn't want to have to deal with this out of insurance anymore and is being difficult to work with. At this point I just want want to settle through a claims process so I don't get screwed over from her and just pay the necessary repairs out of pocket. But since I don't have insurance I don't really understand if I have to pay another penalty or get into legal trouble without it.

Accident happened in CO, I live in WA.

    Thoughts?

HELP! I can no longer afford my car insurance and all my other options are too expensive, tips?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:31 AM PST

EDIT EDIT: Resolved! Thank u everyone!!

Hey! So I'm a 25y/o female who's been licensed since 16. I own my car (2013 Honda Fit) and I am currently on a policy w my mom and stepdad.

Before Friday, March 13th (yeah, Friday the 13th) I had a completely clean driving record. No speeding tickets, no accidents, nada. I had one parking ticket that was actually kind of BS but I paid it the following day. Anyways, long story short on that night around 8pm, I'm getting off of the freeway, have slowed to about 5-7mph, foot slips off the break (it was raining and i didn't realize my shoes were a little wet) and I rear end the car in front of me. Turns out to be Lyft. Driver was super chill, passenger not so much, but reported no injuries to police and rejected seeing an ambulance even though they persisted in asking him because he was freaking out on me so much. Next week get notified from my insurance he got an attorney and now he's claiming soft tissue damage (bruising). Since there's 1. Damage over 1k in total (damage was VERY VERY minor but car stuff is expensive) AND 2. Bodily injury- I'm fucked.

Next time I renewed my policy, I'm slapped with $225/mo vs my previous $100. I've been having to pay that since June. I'm a foodservice worker in Cali aka broke. I NEED better rates. But idk how to get them. Every quote I get is between $250-$380 a month. This is so fucked up. I know people who have DUIs and new cars they're leasing who have less driving experience than me who pay less.

TLDR: previously had good driver and safe driver discounts after 8-9 years of driving, got in minor rear ending less than 12mo ago (March) with over $1k in damages total and minor bodily injury (...allegedly) and now my rates went from $100mo to $225mo. Can't afford it anymore.

EDIT: thank you everyone!!! I took some advice I was given in the raising my deductible to a price I can still afford if need be, but that lowers my monthly quite a bit. We also were able to change my miles driven, I used to be rated for higher mileage because I commuted quite a lot more and I would travel to Arizona a lot before my bf moved out here. I haven't been driving nearly as much as I used to so that helped a ton.

Hit a Spectrum van mid last year. No damage to them but now got hit with a bill from collections

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:05 PM PST

I'm in FL. So late July 2020, I bumped the back of a spectrum van at a red light. We were at a red light and turning right, he edged to the front looking ready to take the right. I followed behind but then the guy didn't go. Bumped him. We got out. The guy was fine, no visible damage to his van, the little black part of the back popped off on the one edge.

He called his supervisor as well as the cops. We waited until the supervisor got here, he wasn't concerned. He actually was the one to just push that edge back in and then it went right in like it never popped off in the first place. The police came after like 2 hours of waiting. He took a quick look. Didn't even ask me for my license or registration or insurance because he said he can't make a report due to "barely any damage".

The supervisor just asked for my name and phone number, not my insurance either. He didn't seem concern or treat it like a big deal. He said he just needed it for the record because he has to file something.

Now 2021 I never got any call from anyone ever until a collection agency sent a bill to my stepdad today asking for compensation for the repaired parts. I guess they replaced it. It totaled 1.6k with 880 being the labor + parts and the rest is for "diminished value" and "loss for usage of the car" since it took them 4 days to repair it.

I honestly doesnt have the supervisor contact info anymore because it's been so long. I don't understand why no one even talked to me or even tried to get my insurance if this was going to be a big deal and suddenly now I'm hit with a bill?? Any advice you guys have for me or am I totally in the fault here and has to pay this? Thank you

pay Car rental insurance?? or Visa CC insurance??? or travel insurance ?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:04 PM PST

    i'm confused how this works

I currently do have liability insurance on my regular car that I drive (Don't want to put a bunch of miles on it as my trip is like 600-700 ish miles total.. over 4 days )

i'm on the same policy with my dad he has full coverage on his car..(because it super cheap to do it that way I only pay 400$ a year. (instead of 700-800$ ish a year...). for insurance and i get to use his car too.. when needed ) i just want to make sure i'm 100% covered for my trip as there is a small chance it may rain and in the rain it increases your chances for an accident..

I have a Visa card platinum...

this is what is on my insurance webpage

If you rent a private passenger car, light van or pick-up, in Canada, the U.S. or its possessions or territories, your Automobile Policy will provide coverage.

If a vehicle is rented, because an automobile covered by your Policy is disabled or being serviced, the policy for the disabled car will be carried over to the rental vehicle. Rental expenses incurred are covered if your Policy includes the optional coverage for that disabled vehicle.

If a vehicle is rented for any reason other than due to disablement or servicing of a covered vehicle, it will have the broadest coverage we currently provide for any vehicle shown on your policy declaration page.

So i should get the LDW(this covers hertz car) and bring my Insurance card? for liability? they will be charging an extra 68$

or just use what i got with visa ?

I'm in California will only be travailing inside California... from Los Angeles to San Diego() (two round trips on two different days) I just rented it for 4 days much easier then having to make multiple trips to pick up a car

it's just a basic car i.e Chevy Malibu or Camry

    Kaplan is trash

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:06 PM PST

No idea where to complain about this but I used Kaplan for my online insurance license course and everything was fine until I needed to call customer service.

It took them 2 weeks to tell me they couldn't help find a disinterested third party so I could complete the final certification for the online course. They told me "go to a local university and ask someone there". Sure sounds great except WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC. It's virtually impossible to find a stranger during normal times let alone now. So, thanks Kaplan, SUPER helpful.

Finally found a disinterested third party to help me complete this. Then noticed they had my SSN wrong on my certificate. This is a problem because now I can't take the official exam. I've tried ALL WEEK to call them. Been on hold 2+ hours, tried emailing them, tried getting them to give me a call back so I don't have to wait on hold. Nope can't get through.

How TF am I supposed to get in contact with them? Does anyone know? My employer is pushing me to finish this license exam but I can't sign up until Kaplan fixes this. Which is just peachy.

Anyway.... end rant. Also wondering if others have experienced Kaplan's trash service. Or maybe it's just me. I'll never buy anything from them in my lifetime.

HELP! Parking garage gate damaged my vehicle. Their insurance will only pay for half of damages??

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 11:04 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was leaving a public parking garage (apartment building with residential and public garage) after grabbing coffee. As the gate opened and I started moving forward, a pedestrian appeared and didn't yield. Naturally I yield, and as she's almost done walking by, the gate closed on my vehicle and scratched the paint down to the bare metal. The pedestrian saw it happen and didn't stop. Somehow there are 0 cameras with an angle. I called the building the garage was in and was put in touch with Travelers Insurance. I provided them with photos and an estimate of the damages from a local body shop I've used in the past.

Note: the gate broke clean off. I had to set it on the ground.

They just called me today and told me that they can only pay half of the estimate to repair my damages. The quote I have is for $500, and they will only give me $250. They're saying they're not liable because this is the first time this has happened. I stated that I had no choice but to stop, or hit a pedestrian. The gate should not be closing on any vehicles and their sensors must be defective. The guy on the phone kept fighting me and saying he's sorry, he doesn't want it to seem like I'm being punished for doing the right thing. He kept saying this has only happened to me, and thus the gate must be working properly. I pushed back further and asked when the gate was installed? What if it was 6 months ago, and by dumb luck I'm the first person to be in this situation? He has no idea when it was installed and couldn't answer that question at all. He gave me his number and told me to call him back.

I'm at a loss here. How is this okay? $500 is measly for an insurance company, but I cannot swallow the principal of having to pay for damages (or involve my insurance) for a situation entirely out of my control. I had a red light runner hit me last year and insurance cut me a $19k check for vehicle repairs. I really really don't want to involve them with anything for a while.

I feel like they're treating me like someone trying to commit insurance fraud.

Please excuse any typos or sentences that read poorly. I'm pretty heated right now.

    Virginia if that helps.

    Market Valuation (car)

Shop fee dispute for totaled car, should I wait to sign paperwork? [CA]

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:42 PM PST

My car has been deemed a total loss by insurance. I got one payout estimate, then a revised one after I negotiated a bit. I haven't received payment yet. The car is still at the collision repair shop because I need to go and remove some items.

There is a $250 "administration fee for totaling the car" that the shop is charging on top of storage fees, etc that my insurance adjuster says they won't pay. But, I don't see why I should have to pay it - it was the insurance company that decided to total the car, not me.

When should I sign over the power of attorney/license transfer stuff? Am I right to wait until at least I've gotten my things out of the car?

The way I figure it, once I sign the power of attorney, they own the car - thus it's their problem to pay the fees to the shop. Can they still come after me for more money aside from the deductible?

    Question about car insurance

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:16 PM PST

Currently living in Alabama. Age 23 paying like $50/month for car insurance on my two 1990s vehicles (one car one truck). My girlfriend is about to move in with me from Miami. She is aged 22, has a drivers license, but has only rode a bike around college for 4 years so she never got car insurance. She is going to be driving my cars to work and whatnot. Does she need to get her own policy with like my cars? Or is there a way to add her to mine? Or like would she already be covered under mine? Really do not know anything about car insurance lol. Thank you very much for any help 🙏

    Small Business Health Insurance

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:46 PM PST

I run a small healthcare practice, it's just two of us. I am covered under my spouse's company plan, but my employee is needing coverage and I want to be able to provide it to her. How do I go about providing healthcare coverage to one person? Is that possible? I've submitted information requests to a couple of local providers, but haven't heard back. I'm in Oregon, USA. Thanks!

I lied about my grades on my car insurance. Realistically, will I get caught?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:44 PM PST

Please don't do the whole sarcastic "yes the fbi will show up and you will go to jail" thing because I am genuinely very anxious about this.

I altered my college transcript to my insurance company before sending it to them because I have horrible grades. This is on a family plan that my parent is paying for. My first question is: insurance fraud is when you knowingly lie, correct? So since my mother doesn't know, will she get in any kind of trouble in case they find out?

Secondly, I have read that the worst case scenario is I get into a car accident, and they request proof that the grades I sent were true. Then they see I lied and I have to pay thousands of dollars in damages and fines and go to jail. Does this actually happen? Do they ever make you send your official report card whenever you get into an accident? Is this common practice? What are the chances of them asking for it and me getting caught?

I am 20 and in college, which is old enough to know better but we are living in actual poverty so I need to save anywhere I can. I feel very guilty about this and I'm scared something bad will happen.

    ADVISE PLEASE

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:49 PM PST

I have a friend who just took out a new car, the car is under her name, along with insurance under her name. Long story short on context. She lives with dysfunctional brothers and one of them got drunk, took her car without permission and crashed other cars domino status then ran away. By the time her brother called to let them(her and her mom) know what he had done and they arrived at the scene, he was gone, the other car owners were nowhere to be found, cops were called and she left her information for the cars. She called her insurance and they informed her since she wasn't the one who was driving and her brother doesn't have a license they could only PROBABLY get approved for $5000 total for damages for the other cars.(Three cars were damaged in this process)

" We're already fucked. Looks like insurance isn't gonna cover much. They can't help us with our car. Looks like insurance isn't gonna cover much. They can't help us with our car. And since jr doesn't have a license, we will only get $5000 for the damage on the other cars, if we get approved for that. And that won't cover anything, cuz one of the cars was brand new. And its 3 cars in total to fix."

What steps can she take in this case?

What are her options at this point?

Note: she is looking into what her gap warranty entitles(what it will cover for her car) hopefully it releases her from payments.

    Edit: This is in California.

    Trackers and Discounts

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 02:44 PM PST

Girlfriend just got her first car and the insurance company got her into installing the tracker app on her phone using "possible discounts" as bait.

I'm not really the type to be interested in that kind of crap, I'd like to see some of your experiences with such a "program" on your insurance plan. How does it work out and are there any signs of them invading privacy / not living up to expectation / using some of your "spirited driving" episodes against you etc.

Insurance asking me for strange things

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 05:55 PM PST

    Hey there,

So I have lemonade app insurance and I'm starting to regret this decision a lot. To clear things up I have renters insurance but it wasn't a flair option.

I filed a claim a few months ago and I told my self it was delayed because of the holidays but it looks like they are just toying around with me.

First they asked for all my receipts (note I had sent pictures receipts and even pics of items with the dates on them before hand so they had verified all my items already) so that was strange but I went ahead and sent them all those.. they waited a couple weeks and asked for bank statements of when I bought the stuff.. this was really strange to me is this even legal? But I sent it to them anyways... a month goes by with no word from them and after I reached out a couple times they want me to hop on a "recorded call" to record a statement.

Not sure what's going on here but it seems like they're either stalling or something.

Can they do this? Is there something I should know? Do they have a certain period of time to process my claim or are they going to wait 7 months and tell me no?

I guess what I'm trying to ask what are my rights when it comes to these things .. I'm in California if that helps

    Thank you!

Got a letter in the mail earlier today from Metromile. I had no idea what they would mail me for but after opening, it was for a large check, around $500. Not a clue why they sent this to me as I canceled my policy with them 2-3 years ago. No description of any kind to explain either.

I saw the letter too late to give them a call for clarification, I'll have to wait until Monday.

Bot asked for location: located in Los Angeles, CA.

Did anyone else get something like this?

Repaying for coverage in good faith

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:03 PM PST

So I left Ireland for Canada and needed to start paying for international insurance instead of my health insurance. Difference of 75 euro per month. I called them and requested the change. Nothing was processed due to 'administrative error' but there was a record of the call occurring etc. So I've been abroad while still on my health insurance technically. Now, they are claiming I need to pay the difference of the health insurance and international insurance over several months. On the phone good faith was mentioned. I am curious whether I would have been covered for breaking my leg or something while still technically on national coverage health insurance? Am I required to backpay this difference to continue with the international insurance?
