All I wanted for Christmas was Monday!!!!!!!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:33 AM PST

OOOOOOHHHHH GOD DAMN!!!!! HERE IT IS BOIZ!!!!!! FIRST MONDAY OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no better way to kick off the greatest season of the year than with the best day of the week! And no, I'm not talking about winter, not summer, but TAX SEASON!

Now if you're in my area, you've probably noticed all the sperm banks turning away donors until further notice. That's because I woke up this morning and checked the calendar. The mess it caused flooded the streets and backed up traffic so much that those banks are now stocked up until at least 2077. That's 56 years worth of Sneezis going out into the world and that's just for this tax season.

Now I know what everyone is thinking. "Sneezis, what are you doing to make this tax season the best explosion of paperwork and accounting juice possible?" Well the answer is simple, I took another job with another firm that I get to work after I leave my first job! Thats right boiz Im doubling up! It only sucks that I couldn't find a job that would hire me between 1am and 6am. But hey, I guess with Covid it was a stretch to find that 3rd job. Normally during this time, I try to work at least 44 hours a day but I'll have to settle for a less impressive 39 hours a day.

But enough about me, let's talk about how fucking ridiculously sexy and erotic these filings are gonna be. I'm sending everyone at the IRS on a cruise this tax season. Why? The first reason is a personal thank you for passing a bunch of complicated laws that make me vibrate at the exact frequency as our profession's founder father and a personal hero of mine, Mr. John K. Accountancy, CPA. He was a real one. Remember that PPP loan? I looked it up and it turns out PPP stands for Penile Penetration of Paperwork. They finally are including our love of deep dicking these forms into their regulations. Hats off to the IRS for finally understanding what we are all about and gifting us with such a perfect tax code. And 2nd, I am sending them on vacation because I don't want to be able to call them. Using them as a resource only makes doing taxes quicker and I plan on going low and slow until these filing as falling off the bone. Might even wrap a few up in extensions and stick them in the fridge for later just in case I want leftovers. God damn, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Tax season is always such a perfect and wonderful time of the year and I'm so glad it's back. I asked Santa for more taxes for Christmas and you wouldn't believe what happened. I found 12 months' worth of his bank statements in my stocking! He didn't even say what he wanted to be done or filed, he just knew I wanted to figure it all out myself.

If you are reading this thinking "But tax season sucks :(" well then fuck you bitch. I live for this shit. Get the fuck out of my profession so I can file your shit. Go work in fucking finance or consulting like a stupid pussy. I'll be here filing like a god until the ground under me starts to shake. Earthquakes happen when I log in to my tax software and you better start bolting things to the ground cause I'm up in this bitch right now.

Better buckle up cause I swear to god this is about to be the ride of your life. All the first years who heard about the firm "training" you. Yeah, that's not what you think. That's when we hop on this literal god damn tax train and drive right through these returns with good old fashion locomotion. Either get on board or get off the tracks. I call shotgun mother fucker. Better yet, I'll drive.

    LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Left the Big 4 During Season - Here Is What I Learned

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:34 PM PST

To all of my fellow public accountants,

It was a short period, but this subreddit has helped me alot wehn I was going through tough times at my job with all of the career advice, resources and the best of all, the memes. So, I thought it is only right that I share with you all my quitting story and everything I've learned along the way.

So, I was an A2 in core assurance at a Big 4 until a few weeks ago. It was long time coming, but I put in my notice a week before we went on vacation. Hence, my official last day was on Christmas Eve. And holy shit it feels good to be out. Here is what I learned through advice from my peers, online research and my own experience.

    1. Never ever put anything before your mental health. Before my Big 4 experience, I've generally been a confident guy and relatively content with life with family and friends I love. But as of now, I've developed crippling bad anxiety. The first year of working was bearable, but by this November, it got so bad that I would start shaking uncontrollably in some situations and fall into this pithole of never ending negative thoughts. I would have to step outside and take a smoke to get rid of it. I know we all meme those useless mental health webinars, but I want you to know that its normal to experience this. And that no job is worth that.
    2. Big 4 experience can vary significantly depending on the engagement team or sub service line you are assigned to. Thats why I think its bullshit when employees say things like the "People" is the what they like most about their firm at those recruiting events. Big 4 firms are so big, that your compatibility with a team could change like night and day even within the same industry/sub-service line you are assigned to. This sounds obvious, but not many people take proactive action to get put on Teams that you genuinely enjoy working with and get along with, including me. One of the main reasons I am leaving is because of the toxic culture of one specific team and I could not get out of it. So, don't let your experience from one or two Teams cloud your opinion of Public Accounting and try switching to a different industry or service line if you're interested. I do have peers who genuinely love their jobs.
    3. You can always come back to Big 4 Accounting if you choose to. I think many people are afraid to leave a toxic working environment because of the social pressure that planted this idea within us that you won't be successful unless you take the Big 4 route. First of all that is not true. Secondly, you can always try other things and come back to the Big 4 life if all else fails. Absolute worst case: Just go enroll at a 1 year Masters program at a target school with relatively cheap tuition and go through the recruiting process again. You already did it once so why won't you be able to do it again? It would be even easier if you keep in touch with your close contacts at your firm and have your CPA. My main point is that don't let unreasonable fear keep you from doing what you really want.
    4. Don't worry if you're leaving mid-busy season. Yea, you might burn a few bridges, but only with your current engagement team. Since my December year-end client have heavy interim testing, I was technically already in busy season in December when I left. I felt bad, and obviously I could have toughed out this busy season and left after that. But, the truth is, these Big 4 firms are structured to deal with high turnover. One way or another, they will find the resources to compensate for your departure. My point is that anytime is a good time to be leaving the Big 4. Especially if you are having mental health issues like me.
    5. Ask for advice. Before I put in my notice, I talked to many of my peers on different teams and friends who have already left the firm. Each Big 4 firm probably has its own complications when it comes to separations, so it would be best if you could get advice from a peer who has already went through the termination process that you are about to go into.
    6. Listen to your heart. As corny as this sounds, listen to your inner voice, intuition, or whatever you want to call it. I've had several managers try to convince me to stay, and to be honest I was pretty close to staying after one of those long calls. But because I was confident in my decision and that it was what my soul really needed at this moment, I was able to stay strong against the bargaining. Personally, I think everything going on with COVID really got me in touch with mortality. The idea that I could die any day and that it is a blessing to be alive. That helped me come to the decision that I no longer want to work just for money and with only mild interest in my job. I want to find a job that I genuinely love doing, and I don't care anymore if it won't pay as much as public accounting because I value my full aliveness more.

This is a pretty long post, so I feel like most people won't read. But it would make my day if this post gave clarity to even one person who is suffering like I was a month ago.

Just curious if public is a lifetime sentence for those of us in tax?

Anyone go into accounting later in life?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:47 PM PST

I'm currently an engineer looking to make a career switch. I think I'd be a good fit for accounting, but the thought of having to go back for another 4 year degree scares me. Did anyone make the switch later in life? How's you do it? Any advice?

Has anyone at your firm ever been fired for billing hours they didn’t work to hit utilization requirements?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST

I know eating hours is far more common but I'm curious about this as I've never heard of it happening where I work

UK accountant considering moving to Canada

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 01:01 PM PST

Chartered Accountant moving from UK to Canada

Was considering moving from the UK to Canada to work as a chartered accountant at a top 20 accounting firm. I currently work in corporate finance (mergers and acquisitions) and would ideally stay in practice until I get full citizenship. I would then consider moving into industry.

Just wanted to know what the work life balance is in Canada in the finance and accounting industry.

In the UK, working in industry usually means working 9-5.30pm with a small amount of overtime and month end/ quarter end/ year end. Is this similar in Canada?

In the UK you also get usually 25 days paid vacation and sick pay etc.

Ideally I would want to move to have a better quality of life.

Could anyone that working in accounting/finance industry shed more light as to their experience and work life balance.

    Thanks

Is anyone else having a really slow response time from seniors?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 12:57 PM PST

How long is a normal response time for you guys in Microsoft teams? I feel like it takes about 3 hours to answer simple questions sometimes. I guess their just really busy? I'm not sure if I'm just being dramatic. I'm a new hire and sometimes I get stuck and it feels like it takes me forever to continue a task because I'm confused about something.

    Does Tax Pigeonhole you?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 08:23 PM PST

I am taking a Tax Internship with PwC starting next week. I thought I wanted to go to Tax which I why I applied for that, and I also have two full-time opportunities as a Tax Associate that I need to decide on.

However, I am starting to rethink what I want to do. Looking into doing a busy season every year in public doesn't seem worth it to me. My offers are all from big accounting firms where I am told I will be working very long hours.

I understand there is easy opportunity for growth in this and after a few years you can be making good money. But to me, the money doesn't seem worth the stress and ruining a quarter of your year every single year.

(TL;DR) Point is, I am worried as I have myself set on this track of specializing in Tax. Say I did end up working in public tax for a few years, are there any exit opportunities?

Canadian accoutant salary progression - I currently make $50 doing AR

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:37 PM PST

I'm 35 years old, I do Accounts Receivable for a year and I make $50K. I'm going to do 4 advanced accounting courses this year to enter the CPA PEP program this year (I'm an accounting major).

I was wondering what the progression of accountant salaries looked like. When can I expect to make $55K? 60k? 70k?

    First Busy Season Ever!!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 07:18 PM PST

Hi! I ended up working at an accounting firm due to the pandemic and it wasn't really my plan but here I am and everyone in my office keeps talking about the hell that is busy season. As a complete newbie who knows very little about accounting, I don't really understand why people go through it. A quarter of your year is completely put on hold with no time for hobbies, friends, significant others, trips, etc. I really just don't understand and to me it's not worth it? To people who do it every year...why? What are the perks of completely ruining a quarter of your year every year? I'm not trying to ask this in a bad way, more of a trying to learn from experience way?
