Principles - Ray Dalio ( Book summary)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 09:11 AM PST

    5 steps to success

    • They are iterative
    • Do them ONE at a time!

    Step 1: Have clear goals

    • You shoulder (almost) never drop a goal because you think it's unattainable!

    Step 2: Identify problems/obstacles

    • Bring problems to the surface, so you can learn from them
    • Don't mistake causes with problems!
      • Problem = Poor performance
      • Cause = Not getting enough sleep
    • While the logical part of your brain knows it's good to address your problems, your emotional part hates it

Step 3: Diagnose the root cause

    • Diagnose before proposing solutions
    • Find the disease rather than the symptoms (look at ROOT causes, rather than proximate causes)
      • Symptoms = I missed the train because I didn't buy train tickets
      • Disease = I missed the train because I'm forgetful

Step 4: Design principles for avoiding the problems/obstacles in the future

    Step 5: Follow the principles

    What are principles?

    • Principles = Decision making criteria

    How to find principles?

    • Categorize situations and find principles for dealing with them:
      • Pain + Reflection (find the root cause) = Principles
      • Use other peoples principles
    • What to do when experiencing a new type of situation you don't have principles for?
      • Find someone who has!

    How to improve your principles?

    • Analyze previous decisions to see if they would have worked
    • Write them down as algorithms a computer can run!
      • Computers can process more information and are unemotional!
      • Compare your intuitions with the decisions made by the computer:
        • If the computer were right and your intuition were wrong, examine why
        • If your intuition was right and the computer were wrong, consider updating the principles the computer uses

Have a small website business (9 clients, $6500 ARR) that I want to get rid of. Where do I find buyers?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:33 AM PST

Started a website business in 2008 as a side hustle. Full time work and life took over, now it has been in maintenance mode for the last 5 years. I figured it is probably time to sell it, but I have no idea where I would list it for sale on the internet and if anyone would be interested.

    Thoughts?

Approached by a cousin to sell spices online.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:36 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a cousin who found an amazing ma and pa spice shop that made really good blends and rubs for BBQ. He would spend hundreds of dollars on these gift sets for friends and family each year. They had a barebones web presence and a site that looked it was set up by teenager. Anyway the shop ended up closing its doors in 2018 and released a recipe book shortly after for their fans. My cousin approached me about setting up a business selling these spice blends. Always looking for the next big thing it occurred to me that he might be on to something but have hesitations.

He wants a 50/50 partnership. My expertise is in branding, web design, social media, and packaging. His expertise is in production and project management.

His mom runs a soup kitchen for a local church that is completely certified by state and local officials to be used for food production. He thinks that we could rent space from the kitchen to make and package the blends.

The next thing is sourcing, I found some wholesale suppliers that are well rated but would have purchase atleast 100lbs to get any type of meaningful volume discount.

He thinks we just need to slightly change the recipes and come up with original names to not get sued, but I am hesitant as I want to know how much needs to changed from a quantifiable amount to cover our ass.

I also think it is a tough sell to convince people to buy a spice blend they've tried from an unknown brand and that online sales will be slow until we can build a base through demos and influence marketing.

Next thing is sales, neither of us are true sales people and we would need someone in the industry to really get our product on retail shelves.

He also has way deeper pockets then I have and for better or worse will be the captain of this ship because of this.

Lastly, he wants to use an aggressive branding image that's full of sexual innuendos. I said that was a non starter for me and I want final creative decision for branding.

    What does /r/entrepreneur think?

Updated my failure log today, sharing so you can learn from me - deep dive into Sauce - my first real startup that we sold

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:26 AM PST

    What was it?

In 2014 I joined forces with my college buddy and partner in crime (we also built this in college) to build what I regard as my first real tech startup - Sauce.Sauce started out as an easy way to add social logins & social features to Shopify stores. Plot twist - 5 months in we realised we could not increase revenue no matter what we tried.

We pivoted into a platform that let ecommerce stores leverage their customer CRM and cookie data to personalise ads, sites and emails in real time.

    What were the results?

    • After the pivot we hit $10k MRR within 3 months
    • It became clear we needed to go upmarket into enterprise software
    • The pivot came too late and we were both exhausted and low on cash
    • We decided to sell the company to BV Accel and move onto new things

    Post mortem

    • While we were acquired - I still feel like we failed
    • It was an incredibly humbling experience to ship product that no one cared about and to innovate out of the situation
    • It gave me a taste of freedom that beat my corporate job a million times over
    • Segment eventually became what Sauce was. It's been incredibly validating to see this happen.

For better or for worse you can follow me over at twitter as I continue to document my journey.

Should I fully focus on becoming an entrepreneur?

Who are your favorite providers of content about entrepreneurship on social media?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:49 PM PST

    Hello folks!

So I'm a still a newbie in the business-founding world. I've bought some books. And I found out about some great insightful blogs and podcasts that I follow now.

But I was hoping to find some pages on social media that provide valuable entrepreneurial content. As great as the aforementioned resources I found have been, it's still not easy to make time to delve into them because I have a time-consuming job and founding my own business isn't a priority for me right now.

That's why I want to add entrepreneurial content to my personal social media feeds. It would just make sure that I have content about entrepreneurship in front of my eyes regularly and also remind me to check out the more extensive resources.

So which social media (Facebook and Twitter mainly) pages do you guys follow for quality entrepreneurial content?

To clarify, I'm not really looking for content like motivational quotes about who an entrepreneur is. I'm not looking for news about investments and whatnot either.

I'm more in interested in pages that would provide infographics, case studies, and discussions about important theories (like the disruptive innovation theory, for instance).

I would really appreciate the help! Thank you all!

    Dropshipping(help me please)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 09:51 AM PST

I see some posts about this but for some reason, its very hard to get a good, real answer.

My first question is how many people on here dropship and are successful. There seems to be a million people on youtube that do it, but I get the feeling they make more money from youtube and their courses than dropshipping.

My second question is if you have been successful, how the hell did you find a good niche. Again everyone who is successful doesn't want to share their niche(which makes sense) but I have been grinding trying to find niches, create sites, and advertise, yet I haven't had any success yet.

any help or advice would be great. Like most of you, I don't want to do the 9-5 doing mindless work for someone else.

I have a unique business idea that I’ve saved the capita(10k) for but I’m worried about failing

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:01 PM PST

Hey there, I work a regular job approximately 32-40hrs per week and I've been sitting on this advertising idea for a while. I have 10k saved up for the initial capital, I've written a business plan and I have an "attack" plan on how to go out and get business but I'm worried about spending the 10k in capital and the business ultimately being a flop.

    Any advice?

Anyone that regrets firing a client?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:45 PM PST

One piece of advice repeated consistently in the entrepreneurial world is that you should fire your bad / high maintenance / problem clients even if they are paying well or they have great growth potential.

But is this just the survivorship bias talking?

Anyone who fired a client and regretted it, what's your story?

    Role of determination in Entrepreneurship?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:18 PM PST

I just read thisarticle from Paul Graham blog:

I wish every startup we funded could appear in a Newsweek article describing them as the next generation of billionaires, because then none of them would be able to give up. The success rate would be 90%. I'm not kidding.

If I understood him correctly, he means that literally 90% of startups (that he funds, so that have a minimal threshold of skill) would be successful, up from around 30%~ I think in their batches. Do you think that is true, does it match your experience? Do you think I understood this paragraph well?

The value of a Domain name?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:54 AM PST

Hi guys, over a year ago I had a project and I grabbed myself a pretty neat .co.uk domain name, that project ended up falling through after RL stuff happened and not having enough resources to persue this. Today I was contacted by a small company who has the domain in a .uk style, wishing to purchase my .co.uk domain, they offered £100 for it. I was wondering the value of this domain, I was hoping I'd be able to get a bit more for it. Thanks in advance.

How Much Equity should I give My First 2 Investors?

A couple friends of mine want to invest but I don't know how much should I value the "project/ future company" in order to know how much equity I should give them?

I prefer to keep as much ownership as possible until I get good traction on this project. But, I need to finance the project to move forward fast.

    I'd appreciate your advice.

I made an animated summary of "Who Moved My Cheese?" By Spencer Johnson. I hope this is useful to you.

If you'd prefer to read the script instead of watching the video, here it is:

Summary of Who Moved My Cheese by Dr Spencer Johnson

    Introduction

Who Moved My Cheese, written by Dr. Spencer Johnson tells a parable story about two men and two mice, and shares insightful advice about what you can do to change your life when you don't let fear hold you back.

    A Summary Of The Book

There are four characters, which are introduced into this story; two mice, Scurry and Sniff; and two men, Hem and Haw.

Scurry is always quick to act, while Sniff has a knack for smelling change at an early stage. Hem is someone who is resistant to change because he feels change is going to bring about something worse. Haw, on the other hand, resists change at first, but then quickly learns to adapt when he sees that change could potentially lead to something better.

These four characters represent the complexities that make up our human personality and our journey towards success.

The Story of Scurry and Sniff

Scurry and Sniff are simple little creatures. They do, however have good instincts. They spend a considerable amount of time scurrying up and down the maze in search of cheese every day. They hurry from one corner to the next, turning around if they don't spot any cheese in sight. Each day, the two little mice check on their cheese to see if there has been any changes to the cheese, and they keep on their toes just in case they might have to be on the move again looking for new cheese.

The Story of Hem and Haw

Then we have Haw and Hem, who also spend their time within a maze in search of cheese. However, they aren't searching for the cheese because they are hungry. On the contrary, Haw and Hem are searching for the cheese because they believe that finding it is what will lead them to feel happy and successful. Unlike Scurry and Sniff though, Haw and Hem tend to overthink because of their complex brains. Haw and Hem start to consider the quickest way to locate the cheese, what strategies work best to manoeuvre the maze, how to keep track of the strategies, when they will finally locate the cheese and what it will feel like when they do. Naturally, they also start to wonder if the cheese even exists in the maze at all.

However, once they do locate their cheese, Hem and Haw quickly become complacent and settle down, satisfied with their cheese stash. One day, when both mice and men wake up to find their cheese gone, the little mice immediate spring into action and running off in search of more cheese while the two men stand by in shock at this terrible turn of events. The mice aren't as horrified by what has happened because they have been watching their cheese supply from the minute they found it, constantly watching for signs of change.

    The Reaction That Follows

Hem couldn't believe what happened and insists on standing his ground, staying right where he is. He believes that they should be compensated for the loss of cheese because life was being unfair. He refuses to leave the place where the cheese was and decides to stay where he is, even at the risk of fading away. Haw, on the other hand, is reluctant to change at first because he finds it difficult to comprehend the turn of events that has happened. Haw is initially terrified of returning to the maze and searching for new cheese because of what happened, but soon comes to realize that looking for new cheese is still better than staying in a place that has no cheese at all. With the thought of finding new cheese on his mind, Haw resolutely pushes forward.

When he is almost at the brink of giving up, Haw finally finds some new cheese in a different part of the maze. Here, he finds Sniff and Scurry there, already enjoying some the cheese and this time, Haw joins in the enjoyment. The one thing Haw does differently this time is to continue searching for new cheese while enjoying what he has, and now he too checks on his cheese daily for signs of change.

    Key Takeaways

There is always success to be found. Even when you think you have achieved the success that you've always wanted, it doesn't mean you're automatically set up for life. Haw eventually came to that realization and went in search of new cheese on his own and refused to be paralyzed by fear any longer. Adapting to change and letting go of the old ways is something we must all learn to do, and when we have found some cheese, we should enjoy it but never stop searching for more cheese to keep us going.

When going through the maze Haw wrote messages on the wall for Hem to read if he ever was brave enough to venture out into the maze. Cheese can represent anything you want in life, happiness, money, love. Here are the things he wrote:

Have cheese makes you happy The more important your cheese is to you the more you want to hold on to it. If you do not change, you will become extinct What would you do if you weren't afraid? Smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old. When you move beyond your fear, you feel free. Imagining yourself enjoying new cheese even before you find it, leads you to it. The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese. It is safer to search in the maze than to remain in a cheeseless station. Old beliefs may not lead to new cheese. When you see that you can find and enjoy new cheese, you change course. Noticing small changes early helps you adapt to bigger changes that are to come. Change happens. They keep moving the cheese. Anticipate change. Get ready for the cheese to move. Monitor change. Smell the cheese… Change. Move with the cheese. Enjoy change! Savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese! Be ready to change quickly and enjoy it again and again. Keep moving with the cheese.

I hope that was useful, have a great day!

How do retail entrepreneurs manage products?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:46 AM PST

I guess this is a question for small businesses and large companies like Zara, Crate and Barrel. I am specifically interested in knowing how often do you introduce new items to customers? After how many months would you put an item in sale and remove it from your shop? Also, are there any items that are timeless/ you would sell indefinitely? If yes, how do you identify those? From sales forecasts?

    Thank you,

I spent 3 HOURS on a phone call to eventually introduce a potential prospect to my business and get them as a client

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:34 AM PST

I want to know if there's a way around this.. people often say BUILD RELATIONSHIPS and not introduce your services as the bait in conversations off the bat. Yesterday, I found a prospect on FB and was messaging and then I suggested a call which he was open to doing (but he usually doesn't do) because I had brief conversation with him.

Pretty friendly guy. The call lasted 3 hours but I just spent that getting to know him instead of making it about me. After maybe the 2 hour mark I then made it known as to what I do and how he may benefit from it. He didn't mind taking me on to help him but he jokes and says "OH SO YOU ONLY DID THIS TO GET ME AS YOUR CLIENT"... ofcourse it was a yes but I didn't let him know that lol but now I'm working with him because he was able to tell me the problems he was having not even knowing what my line of work was. Also— his conversation was pretty good so I didn't mind.

What do you think? Get to know potential clients or should I just come out from the jump and let them know WHY I'm reaching out. I don't want to lead them on.
