This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions.

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Damned you Citron!!! Shorted LAZR to $20, and Velodyne to $40, used the word casino again. Why do they keep using words to scare bears away? Might sell more shares and buy back in at a lesser price, because of Citron...

    Snowflake hits $120B Valuation

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 07:50 AM PST

I'm baffled, 2 months ago this was going to IPO around a $30B valuation, which I thought was steep, and then debuted around $60B. Value investors must be driven mad at this point, I mean what do you even invest in at this point?

Tesla’s market value hits more than $600B for first time joining ultra-small club

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 04:46 PM PST

    https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/teslas-market-value-hits-600b-for-first-time-joining-ultra-small-club

The market value of the electric vehicle maker reached $608 billion on Monday for the first time and is now just one of five S&P 500 companies to join the exclusive club as tracked by Dow Jones Market Group.

The company is set to be added to the index, which is the broadest measure of the stock market, on December 21, and since the inclusion was announced last month investors have pushed the stock to record highs of $641.76 per share growing the market cap by $221.49 billion.

A surging stock price is hitting short-sellers hard, including Jim Chanos who is one of Wall Street's most skilled betters against companies. Last week he disclosed in an interview he is no longer short the company while offering rare praise to Musk.

    Thanks for the award.

Tesla stock drops after $5 billion stock offering plan

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 03:45 AM PST

Shares of Tesla Inc. dropped Tuesday after the electric vehicle market leader filed for the sale of up to $5 billion worth of stock.

The share sale plan comes after the stock shot up 12.8% over the past three days to Monday's record close of $641.76. That rally boosted Tesla's market capitalization to $6.08 billion, enough to make it the sixth most valuable U.S. company.

The stock TSLA, +7.13% slid 1.8% ahead of Tuesday's open. The stock has soared 94.4% over the past three months through Monday, and 667.1% year to date, while the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.19% has gained 14.3% this year.

Telsa said it entered into an equity distribution agreement with a number of Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Barclays, BNP, BofA Securities, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, SG Americas and Wells Fargo.

Shares will be sold from "time to time" through an "at-the-market" (ATM) offering program.

The offering follows another $5 billion offering completed three months ago, when a large shareholder also sold off some of its stake, and before the stock is added to the S&P 500 index on Dec. 21.

Based on Monday's stock closing price of $641.76, the offering plan could represent about 7.79 million shares, or about 0.8% of the shares outstanding.

    Thoughts on MMED?

Up almost 30% this week already, is hovering around $3 a share & had a price point of around $25.50 in 2017. With the hype around psychedelics, what're your thoughts? I'm sitting on a measly 15 shares but kind of want to yolo and put $1000 in.

I also have holdings in NUMI but it hasn't performed as well thus far.

Hello reddit, I'm the guy who brought you several other SPACs. Mods hate SPACs for some reason, but SPACs are back and we're all here to make money.

DMYD is taking Genius Sports public.

Genius is one of two stats data providers for all major sportsbooks. (Other one being SportsRadar.) This is a two headed duopoly that feeds Draftkings, Fanduel, MGM, etc.

Palantir is a longterm winner due to its ability to process data, thus making it a partner for governments and corporations alike. Sports teams and sports books treat Genius the same way. See below for some DD from the college sports world.

I reached out to a friend who works in college sports, not a stock guy. His take: https://imgur.com/gallery/yfIs48H

Genius is a machine in college and pro sports, already posting $100M+ revenue and positive EBITDA margins, and trading at a major discount to other sports betting companies. They have multiyear locked contracts with several sports leagues, and will continue growing quickly as betting legalizes nationally.

Here are my current holdings and my average price:

    SQ - 15 shares @ $175

    NIO - 100 shares @ $20

    PLTR - 70 shares @ $18

    XPEV - 66 shares @ $31

    SBE - 40 shares @ $29

    TESLA - 10 shares @ $500

Yes I know I'm tech/EV heavy and NOT diversified at all lol. I'm only 24 with a great job that already provides a 401k and I have a Roth IRA as well, so I can definitely take on the risk.

Anyways, if you were me, which ONE stock would you put the $2500 in among my existing holdings? I don't want any new plays.

Tesla stock bounces back, as analyst sees $5 billion stock offering as a ‘clear positive’

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 02:01 PM PST

Shares of Tesla Inc. bounced back into record territory Tuesday, erasing an earlier sharp slide, even as the electric vehicle market leader filed for the sale of up to $5 billion worth of stock.

The share sale plan comes after the stock shot up 12.8% over the past three days to Monday's record close of $641.76, which boosted Tesla's market capitalization to $608.3 billion.

The stock TSLA, +1.27% had dropped as much as 3.6% to an intraday low of $618.50, before reversing course to edge 0.6% higher to $645.60 in afternoon trading. That pushed the market cap up to $612.0 billion, enough to make Tesla the sixth-most valuable U.S. company.

The stock has now soared 95.5% over the past three months and 671.6% year to date, while the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.28% has gained 14.6% this year.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said he believes the capital raise is a "clear positive" for Tesla, and further solidifies his "bull case" stock price target of $1,000 and his "base" target of $560, which is 13.3% below current levels.

"We believe this is the smart move at the right time for Musk & Co. after the parabolic rally in shares with the appetite strong among investors to play the transformational EV trend through pure play Tesla over the coming years," wrote Ives wrote in a note to clients.

Ives is referring to Founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk. He has rated Tesla neutral since April 2019.

Telsa said before Tuesday open that it entered into an equity distribution agreement with a number of Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Barclays, BNP, BofA Securities, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, SG Americas and Wells Fargo.

Shares will be sold from "time to time" through an "at-the-market" (ATM) offering program.

Thoughts on Curis? Spiked up 350% today

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:50 PM PST

    From their website:

"Working relentlessly to develop innovative and differentiated therapeutics that improve the lives of cancer patients."

"Curis is focused on the development and commercialization of innovative therapeutics for the treatment of cancer."

Seems they hit some breakthrough in treating patients with leukemia. Spike happened immediately after announcement.

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/curis-announces-positive-preliminary-data-120000313.html

Yet most of the buzz about them are about the spike itself. Still sounds relatively unknown to the public. They're relatively small - employees more or less around 30 it seems.

Was the rise too dramatic? What are the chances of this blowing up again in the future?

President-elect Biden is also extremely passionate about cancer research, if that means anything.

TESLA sell $5B in shares | Stock market news | Why stock market investors predict gains in 2021 |[12-08]

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 06:31 AM PST

Tesla just announced that it's selling $5B again, retail investors expect big gains next year despite the recent uncertainty in the US with the relief package debacle, cases rising at very high rates and the government maybe facing a temporary shutdown

Hey everyone ! So, let's start with the recap of yesterday as we saw the DOW JONES down by half a percent, the SP500 down 0,2% while the tech heavy NASDAQ COMPOSITE outperformed, finishing up 0,45 and closing yet again at a new record high. We did see the volatility index going higher, as more uncertainty puts some pressure on the markets with the stimulus and government funding bill on the table.

We saw a bigger ratio of companies losing ground yesterday as small caps and especially growth companies outperformed the value plays yesterday with gains being made only in Technology, Utilities and Communications sectors while Energy was the biggest loser as the illness still keeps the pressure on the Oil business.

Here is the HEAT MAP from yesterday as 3 of the big FAANG names outperformed the market yesterday, with Apple being up more than 1% while FB and NFLX did even better up 2 and 3,5% for the day. You can also see a lot of red in this map as not many companies did good yesterday except big tech names.

So, some TESLA news, yesterday the company spiked to a new all time high at over 640$ as the stock soared over 7% again. The stock has gone up more than 200$ in the last month as more and more people are buying shares in anticipation of the SP500 inclusion and more and more analysts raise price target and expectations for the company. Tesla also just announced a sell of shares worth of $5B again as the company continues to raise more capital to fund the new factories and firm up the balance sheet while reducing the debt of the company. I think this a good time to be careful and maybe take some profits in this stock before next week, as many people may end up selling shares on the 18th and 21st and we might see a correction instead of a spike in price when the company is included in the SP500. aka [buy the news/sell the event] NEWS

Some of the economic data that we received yesterday was worse than expected as the home purchase sentiment index rising streak ended this month with a dip of 1.7 points and is down more than 11 points year over year.

While the TD Ameritrade Investor Movement is index down from the previous month as investors bought more Apple, Tesla and AT&T shares while selling Moderna, Beyond Meat and Micron.

Also, the small business optimism index dipped more than expected and fell to 101,2, down from 104 in October.

So, a recent survey from Investopedia shows that over 20% of investors are expecting gains of at least 10% for next year with more than ¾ expecting that 2021 will be another positive year for the stock market.

Most investors expect the biggest gains to be made in the US equities while CHINA and other emerging markets are the next to follow with the Eurozone expected to lag.

While this individual investors expect the large cap tech companies to continue to have big gains followed by pharma and health companies. I think this is a recency bias, as I don't think any one sector will largely outperform next year, with lots of gains to be made everywhere once the full reopening of the economy will begin. Jim Cramer Quote

I think investors are pretty bullish as the AAII survey showed last week, I think this might be a problem for the stock market. I don't think the stock market will go up as fast as investors would like, and this might push more of them into more and more risk taking, especially the new investors, which desire to make a fortune fast. I expect the stock market to be higher by this time next year, but the rate of which it will go up is still going to scare some investors off. As the market sentiment is way into euphoria levels as you can see in this survey, and with retail investors being more powerful than ever before as they account for about 20% of the stock market activity on average daily as we also might see some turbulence in the next couple of months until things will become more stable with the economy, vaccines, politics and everything else with the smart money index continues to drop while stocks reach new highs, this might be the time to take a wait and see approach and maybe try to buy the dips when they come.

Some good news came early today the first ever recipient of the public vaccine from Pfizer has been vaccinated today in the UK, this is the start of the rollout of the vaccine in the UK and it is expected that the US will follow in the next couple of weeks. As the "vaccine summit" will be in full display this week. This is great news for the entire world.

On some individual stock news, the darling of the moment Lemonade just launched in its 3rd EU country, in France, following the Netherlands and Germany launches.

While the 2 big IPOs will come on Thursday as both AirBNB and DoorDash are expected to go public at insanely high valuations.

After the close today we will get Chewy earnings results and I expect the company to dazzle and to crush them, as pets have become more and more popular this year.

Thank you everyone for reading! Hope you enjoyed the content! Be sure to leave a comment down below with your opinion on the stock market!

Have a great day and see you next time!

THCB: I’m holding 2,600 worth at 11.51. Is it worth selling and rebuying at a later entry since merger pushed to Q1? Anyone else holding or already sold?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:11 AM PST

I'm new to investing but have had great success playing off IPO spacs and playing around merger dates. Although I feel happy to have this position, I also feel like this will stagnate until March (I think that's merger estimation I read after extension) and with only $100 gain over my holding, I feel like I could make some more investments prior to that merger date.

Is this poor thinking as a new trader? Is this common thought or partial FOMO in reverse? And lastly, is anyone else out there holding on their THCB waiting for their opportunity to 2-3x or hold beyond? Thank you!

Moderna is going up fast, but folks seem to be overlooking Lonza Group

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 12:33 PM PST

I'm fairly new to stock trading and I noticed today that while COVID vaccine-maker Moderna ($MRNA) has been skyrocketing the last couple of weeks, the company they have partnered with to manufacture their vaccine ($LZAGY) has stayed fairly flat.

I think it makes sense that Moderna would be a favorite in this field. My understanding is that their vaccine can be stored at normal fridge temperatures and are good for a month, while Pfizer's has to be at -70 °C and is good for two weeks. Even though Pfizer has a lot of big contracts, I could see Moderna's vaccine becoming the standard for this reason alone. Moreover, Moderna is a much newer company than Pfizer, so it seems likely to me that Moderna will be leaner and thirstier to make a mark in the world. Still, I've read a few analyses that seem to suggest Moderna is priced well above their likely future valuation.

But something caught my eye -- Moderna has contracted with Lonza Group to make their vaccine, and Lonza has built two plants and hired hundreds of employees to handle the load. Also interestingly, they seem to be a major supplier of the amebocyte-based assays -- a critically important piece of the supply chain that is used to detect bacterial endotoxins in vaccines. This is a product that is derived from horseshoe crab blood, though, which is an unappealing source for multiple reasons, as horseshoe crab populations are on the decline. But what I find most interesting is that Lonza Group has developed a synthetic version of the assay in the last couple of years.

Maybe all this is already "priced in" to Lonza Group's current stock price. Or maybe people are overlooking it. As a newbie, I'd appreciate anyone's feedback and insights.

Helpful Article For People Thinking About Buying the C3.ai ipo ($AI) Tomorrow

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 11:31 AM PST

My Thoughts: Basically, they're not really an AI company, their software is not much like palantir's gotham. Their software "provides a software platform companies can use to create artificial intelligence applications to help them run their business." Some say that it is a pretty basic software that just has good marketing, however, since most of their customers are in the industrial sector (which is why their revenue growth took a hit) this could be a very good reopening play (or a vaccine play as the article describes it) . As the industrial sector starts to get back on its feet, C3.ai will grow with it. I'm planning on taking a small position in this as well as ABNB, looking at both as reopening/vaccine plays.

IPO study phase 2: more evidence

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 10:09 AM PST

I started a thread yesterday arguing that buying IPOs around the day they start trading is a mistake because almost all of the IPOs I've looked at hit prices lower than their opening trade price at some point over the next year of trading. I decided to expand the sample by adding some IPOs from 2014-2016. I also realized my previous prices weren't accurate because I was using the closing prices on the weekly chart, which misses the intra-week lows. So I went back over my previous data set and fixed the error. I also wanted to see if I could find an accurate rule about when the best time is to buy an IPO by looking at 1-month, 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month purchase dates.

    Results

    Total sample: 38 IPOs

30/38 (78.9%) hit a price below their opening trade price within the next 12 months

    13/38 (34%) were lower at 1 month post-IPO

    12/38 (31.5%) were lower at 3 months post-IPO

    13/38 (34%) were lower at 6 months post-IPO

    16/38 (42%) were lower at 12 months post-IPO

When did the stock hit its lowest low?

    <1 month: 3/38 (7.9%)

    1-3 months: 3/38 (7.9%)

    3-6 months: 9/38 (23.7%)

    6-12 months: 14/38 (36.8%)

    Analysis

Although the results aren't quite as one-sided with the larger sample, the results still clearly show that a very high percentage of stocks hit a price lower than their opening IPO trade price at some point in the 12 months following their IPO (almost 80% of the sample). While there isn't a clear rule for when the best time is to buy, the results seem to suggest that waiting at least 6 months is a smart idea. More than 1/3 of stocks hit their lowest post-IPO low in the 6-12 month period, and 42% were lower than their opening trade price at the 12-month mark.

There is one caveat here, which is that some of the time periods correspond with major market selloffs. For example, some of the stocks that IPO'd in 2015 hit lows in early 2016 when the markets sold off. But the reality is that major selloffs are always a risk in the markets so stocks that are popular IPOs now face a risk of a broader market selloff sometime in the next year just as some of the stocks in the sample.

Tesla's Musk relocates to Texas from California; compares himself to war general

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 03:06 PM PST

Silicon Valley billionaire Elon Musk said on Tuesday he had relocated to Texas from California as he wants to focus more on the new Tesla Inc plant and his SpaceX venture.

Musk confirmed the move in an interview with Matt Murray, the Wall Street Journal's editor in chief.

"The two biggest things that I got going on right now are the Starship development in South Texas ... and then the big new U.S. factory for Tesla," the 49-year-old Tesla chief said.

"It wasn't necessarily a great use of my time here (in California)".

Texas might potentially offer some tax reprieve for the world's second richest man. It does not collect personal income tax while California has some of the highest state tax rates in the United States.

A 670% rally in Tesla shares this year has boosted Musk's net worth from $27 billion to $155 billion, just behind Amazon.com Inc's Jeff Bezos, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

In a conversation touching a wide range of topics including government intervention, technology companies and corporate policy, Musk criticized CEOs of other U.S. companies for not focusing enough on their products.

"If you find yourself spending a lot of time giving presentations and reviewing spreadsheets, you're barking up the wrong tree," Musk said.

The billionaire also compared himself to a war general and said, "If you think about war ... do you want the general in some like ivory tower or on the front lines? The troops are going to fight a lot harder if they see the general on the front lines."

Musk said tech companies in Silicon Valley had too much influence on the world and predicted a decrease in their power.

On Tesla's move to raise $5 billion in capital, he said: "We thought we can retire a lot of the debt and increase the security of the company ... have more of a war chest."

Musk has earned Tesla stock options related to his 2018 pay package that are currently worth almost $20 billion.

    Company isn’t on NASDAQ?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2020 01:25 PM PST

    Hi

I invested in a company that's on a NEO exchange, but they are looking to be on NASDAQ in near future. I bought the stock in the Canadian market but there is also the US version. What will happen when they get approved to be on NADAQ, will these two merge? And what are the consequences of this? Sorry if this seems really stupid, I'm Quite new to this and am learning. Thanks!
